Putzier Back in Denver

December 10th, 2008 - 10:50am by Adam Zinser

It’s only Wednesday, but it’s already been a busy week for the Broncos, personnel-wise. After all the transactions Tuesday, more have taken place this morning.

The Broncos have signed tight end Jeb Putzier, Head Coach Mike Shanahan has announced. To make room for him on the roster, the team waived safety Herana-Daze Jones.

Putzier began his NFL career in Denver in 2002 and stayed with the Broncos until 2005. He spent the following two season with the Texans before joining the Seahawks in 2008. He saw action in six games for Seattle before being waived.

In 67 career games, Putzier has totaled 96 receptions for 1,251 yards with three touchdowns. He also has appeared in three career postseason games, posting 10 receptions for 159 yards with one touchdown.

The tight end will wear No. 87 for the Broncos.

The team also signed running back Steve Baylark to the practice squad. A second-year player out of the University of Massachusetts, Baylark has yet to see action in any regular season games, though he has played against the Broncos twice in the preseason with the Arizona Cardinals.

At UMass, Baylark became just the third Division I-AA player to post four 1,000-yard rushing seasons. A second-team All-American as a senior, Baylark finished his collegiate career with 1,080 carries for 5,199 yards with 42 touchdowns.

Good ole Jeb. Glad he’s back in uniform for us. Hopefully he doesn’t cut into Scheffler’s catches the next 2 weeks since I need him to produce for my fantasy team.

  2. SlvrSurfRidr says:

Did I miss something, does this mean Graham is out … or we gonna line someone up outside and run a split wildcat :)

  3. hrdnokd says:

Well slap my backside and call me sally, that’s friggin’ awesome! I think this has more to do with Barrett playing so well the past 2 games than anything. We were THING at tight end, especially threats downfield. This gives us a nice 4 tight end option again….that’s right, I said it. Anyone else remember the Indy game a few years ago where we loaded 4 Tight Ends in there!?

  4. Nachojuice says:

Its a good signing, he can catch the ball well and I definitely remember that game, gives us more options at the goal line and in the red zone as well … I’m very excited for this weeks game, 4-0 against the best division in the NFL would do a lot to show the world how good the broncos can be. Need the D to step up and bottle up those rbs though, make Jake beat us and we’ll win the game :)

  5. Broncfalls says:

    VERY GOOD SIGNING!

Welcome back Jeb! I really like this guy. Big, fast can catch..NICE! stack it up Shanny!

Not to mention, I like experience being there if Stokes can’t go. So with that said, any one heard if Stokes is going to be able to go this Sunday?

With the hillis injury and roster moves, I didn’t know if I missed anything other than he didn’t finish the game and was sore.

    any updates Gray?

    GO GET EM’ BOYS!

  6. smithalltheway says:

i like this let scheffler get some rest before playoffs

  7. 47yrBroncosFan says:

Good signing – though Tony Scheffler is what Jeb was supposed to be. Also, Jeb came at too high a price before he left. Hopefully the Broncos signed him for a realistic salary.

  8. Dr. Doom says:

Broncfalls- Coach Shanahan said Stokley’s ankle should be fine by Sunday.

Also Not only has Jeb proven as a go to tight end for us in the past he is also a viscous blocker in the run game.

    WELCOME BACK JEB!!!

  9. diehardfan1966 says:

good pick up.the broncos have to be the most active team in the league.cutting that safety is a good sign for barrett.i cant wait to see cory boyd get his first 100 yard game.go broncs

  10. Broncogram65 says:

So very happy to have Jeb back. Great player and great personality!

  11. brian_schneider says:

Maybe he will be a back up fullback to with Larsen. Putzier always was a good blocking TE and has good hands too.

  12. Lepsis-Fan78 says:

I love our TE’s lol i dont like mustard tho lol. but grahams an amazing blocker tony has great hands jacksons funny and Jeb Putzier i mean comon he has the best name in football its so weird to say lol I use to love playin with him in madden

  13. Gami3it says:

Nice pick up. I always saw Jeb staying with us for a long time, he was fast, strong, could catch and a good blocker. Sheffler has taken his position and I am a sheff fan but its good to have Jeb back. Im not looking foward to the next off season….so many people i like might have to go lol

  14. TheFuture6 says:

I loved Putzier, he was a great receiver and tough as nails. My god did he take some shots. This is because Jackson went on the IR right?

  15. Adam Zinser says:

SlvrSurfRidr: There’s nothing wrong with Daniel Graham. Head Coach Mike Shanahan just said in his press conference that they wanted more depth at the tight end position.

Broncfalls: You haven’t missed anything with regards to Stokley. He hasn’t spoken to the media at all yet today, but we should get some indication of his status when the injury report comes out shortly.

  16. D~J~C~#24is#1 says:

Man I am really REALLY disappointed to see that Hillis is done for the season. Lets hope Bell can pick up the slack.
I’m glad to see Putzier back.

  17. 38yrfan says:

welllllllllllllll.. iguess i better pack my bags..the way things are going, open try outs are a re just around the corner lol…just kidding…bringing jeb back is proof, shanny is going to do averything possble to take this team deep into the playoffs…and for those of us true believers… a sign of good things to come (super bowl win)…………keep believing…..

  18. Adam Zinser says:

Broncfalls: Head Coach Mike Shanahan said that Stokley did not practice today, but he did speak with the media a few minutes ago. He has a heel bruise and is going to take it day by day.

  19. broncos20 says:

very smart move Shanny..I think you guys have coverd up all the points well..with Daze’s cut, Barrett’s role increases…a very good sign…
and Jeb allows Scheff to take some much needed rests for a playoff run,,plus,, with our threat a running back out (Hillis) it makes sense to sign an excellent run blocker in Jeb..good for the screen play too…not to mention he’s big, fast, and can catch….hope he can dust off the rusts after jumping around teams for a while and remember the Broncos scheme..

what I’m most excited to see is this coming Sunday’s matchup against the Panthers..,,it could be the most exciting game the Broncos play so far… Steve Smith against our own Champ..Woodyard & Co. against Stewart and Deangelo,,and Clady + Harris against Peppers…although i dont think they can match-up against all our offensive weapons,,Marshall + Royal + Stokely + Scheff + Graham + hopefully a breakout performance by Bell…its still going to be a tough match-up..atleast we know most of their threats come from handing the ball to Deangelo and Stewart…

    Go Broncos

  20. ColoradoCutler says:

Brilliant…..welcome home jeb! Rember how our O droped off when tony got hurt hes a guy that could step in and fill that void if it were to happen again(knocking on wood!)And anoter good blocker with hands omg if there was a doubt before there is none now best core of T.E.and wide recivers in the N.F.L. keep the faith…..and here we go!!!!!

  21. Rodsmithforprez says:

What happened to Nate Jackson he’s not on the injury list or the depth chart, did he get cut?

  22. monodono says:

Jeb “The Polish Sledge Hammer” Putzier, HA! Good to see him back but I’m not sure Jones was the right cut I think we should’ve moved Mustard. But what do I know.

    TIME OF POSSESSION! ! !

    GO BRONCOS! ! !

  23. Broncfalls says:

I’VE SAID SEVERAL TIMES….THIS IS A VERY, VERY DANGEROUS TEAM. AND IT WILL BE IN THE POST SEASON! PITTSBURGH I’M GLAD YOU’RE THE #1 RANKED DEFENSE CAUSE YOU’RE GOING TO NEED IT FOR THIS OFFENSE!

    GO GET EM’ BOYS!

    CAROLINA, YOU’RE IN OUR WAY!!!!!

  25. LBWilson56 says:

    Nice!!!!!!Welcome back Jeb!

  26. ronvikings@hotm says:

Good job in getting Jeb back coach shanahan.Hey coach shanahan clinton portis and coach zorn are not getting along at old redskin park. Please bring portis back to the broncos next year.

  27. jmonk says:

im with ron how crazy would it be to see portis back out there? not saying i wouldnt make the trade for champ with him, but to have him back would really be nice, but its a pipe dream, i hate to say it but i think shanny has convinced himself he can put any 1 in there and theyll do good and its probly true i just hope i dont live to see the day where it goes bad somehow

  28. Lepsis-Fan78 says:

ill be the first to agree with n e 1 who says portis would have been the best RB in the league had he stayed in denver. but some1 that goods not goin n e where without a BIG offer and our biggest offer would be Champ or Jay and we need them to bad to give them up and ive seen a few RB’s do a great job this year, next season we rnt goin to be picken up RB were gunna filter through the 1s we have next year cause we have 5 possibly 6 (if u count hillis as a RB) Great RB’s on this team we cant afford to keep them all. next year will suck to see any of them go.

  29. Ron Marken says:

Wise choice on behalf of Mike Shanahan!!!

  30. royalbroncofan1 says:

Welcome back – Jeb Putzier ! Another former player, (like T. Bell) who knows the system and will be able to contribute. A great blocker and pass catcher who will be able to give Scheffler & Graham some blows (breathers).

    Go Broncos !!!!

  31. MikeandDeni says:

They should not have waived Jeb to begin with!

  32. imready says:

Whoa, just say know to the Portis idea. This current Bronco team is successful because it is a TEAM, we don’t need no premadona’s. We definately got the better end of the Bailey/Portis trade. I’d take Hillis over Portis any day of the week for the one simple fact that he scares the hell out of defenses. Welcome home Jeb, we’re glad to have you back! Go Broncos!

  33. BradJamesBroncoFan says:

You’ve got to play well Jeb. Wearing #87 carries a prestigious mantle.

  34. BroncoOrdie0730 says:

Jeb is a nice fill in, he already knows the system and has great hands and like everyone has said, he can block well! Welcome back Jeb.
i’m with “imready” on the say no to Portis issue. yeah he’s a good back and would be stellar back in our system but we have some great backs already, ok injuries have killed us this year, but next year we will be so overmanned there it’s going to hurt. Portis complained about not getting enough carries. have you heard anyone of our backs complain about anything? NO. they do what they do when their name is called and thats it. It’s all about team play here. i was worried about Marshall becoming another T.O. when he wasn’t getting enough throws or yards in a game, but he has proven me wrong. i love the guy and i love how he says that he likes it when Royal, Stokley and our TE’s are gettting the ball too. that just shows his character. this team has overcome alot this year and they amaze me every sunday. they have heart and are all about eachother. i hope to see them all together for years to come.
GO BRONCOS!!! let’s get that 3rd ring this year.

  35. Bones1965 says:

The Broncos are going to scary in the Playoffs…HOW ABOUT STARTING BLY AND BELL AT THE CORNERS AND BARRETT AND BAILEY AT SAFETY.
    THE FOUR B”S

At linebacker Winborn and Woodyard on the outside and Dj in the Middle.

  36. Just D says:

Bone1965- now that sounds like a great idea.

  37. broncomike83 says:

Bones1965 that would sound like a great idea, but you have to realize that champ is the number one conerback in the nfl for a reason. He shuts down every reciever he has faced this year and with Mr.Smith having a good year we need him more than ever to shut him down. Espicially with champs run support he can shut down half the field. But playoff wise, that might be a good change….Bell needs to step up, Barrett sure proved himself against Gonzales and Bly is finally coming outta his shell as a game to game elite preformer. Go broncos D, were ranked 27th, we have to step up this week against the panthers ground attack. Look for Winborn to lead the way with 15 tackles. GO BRONCOS!!!!

  38. ThesmilingAssasin27 says:

For some reason the Broncs sure do play well against tougher teams so I hope they will do the same again this Sunday. Jeb, glad to see you back in Orange and Blue. Your a hell of a player and looking forward seeing you confuse that panther defense. Speaking of defense, it sure will be a sight when I see ol champ and Dj back in the line up. Panthers, your in for the best game you have played this season, agains the best team with the most heart.

    Go DENVER!!!!!!!

  39. gavintim says:

I can’t wait to see Jay tear up the sencondary with Jeb! This is awesome! GO BRONCOS!!
