Preseason Week 4: Wednesday Practice Blog

August 31st, 2011 - 2:05pm by Max Henson

The fourth preseason game usually provides backups with an opportunity to make a statement, especially at the quarterback position, where the Broncos have had a solid competition for reps leading up to the start of the regular season.

Head Coach John Fox didn’t reveal who would start tomorrow night in Arizona against the Cardinals after his team practiced this afternoon in shells, but he described what he’ll be looking for when one of his quarterbacks takes the field.

“Lead the team — I think No. 1, first and foremost, that’s the job of the quarterback,” Fox said. “We’ll be looking at all of them and how well they direct the offense. Each week we’re trying to get better and it will be no different tomorrow night.”

Fox reiterated that he’s been pleased with the progression of each of his signal-callers, and he’s looking forward to seeing them compete Thursday.

“I like our quarterback situation,” Fox said. “I feel good about the players we have at the position and as well as they keep working hard and remain professional about it and getting better every day, I’m sure I’ll continue those feelings.”

After the quarterback discussion, Fox was asked if anyone in particular had stood out to him with the regular season fast-approaching and his middle linebacker came to mind.

“On a short look, a guy that comes to mind is (LB) Joe Mays,” Fox said. “He’s a guy that had limited action a year ago.
We had seen him a little bit in Philadelphia. Playing in the 3-4 is a little bit different than playing in the 4-3, and I like the way he’s gone about his business thus far.”

As for the team as a whole, Fox said his group is working steadily to meet their own high expectations.

“They’ve had a good mindset and a good attitude throughout the process,” Fox said. “Even though it’s been a short time I think we’ve made some progress, but as we go into the regular season, we’ll find out.”

ROLL CALL
Defensive end Elvis Dumervil and offensive lineman Chris Kuper did not participate.

Defensive tackle Kevin Vickerson returned to action.

I like healthy debate. It’s fun to discuss our favorite team. It’s good to have everyone stand on their own two feet in an argument. I can see the benefit in arguing for the present and future vs. whats already transpired. It does however still bring back that bad taste. It’s kind of funny how we get wound up over athleticism and our geographic location, and our fathers favorite team. Maybe it’s the colors, or it’s because you will do anything to get under the skin of that jerk in oakland, so you like the Broncos. Whatever it is, it’s a game. ;)

Chris Harris only got 2k huh? Dang. If he makes the practice squad, he’ll be at around 80k a year.

BTW, Clady has some sweet form. I’ll bet he could punt the heck out of the ball too!

As soon as the fans start forgetting it is a game and it suppose to be fun, well then all is lost from the proffesional sports world. These things are meant for entertainment and fun. Sure we want the players to take it serious but that is their job. The fans are the only ones left in proffesional sports that don’t care about the money. We don’t get paid or reimbursed to watch games in fact it is quite the opposite, we have to pay them. So as fans we need not get too serious. I will work on that, and I think I’ve done pretty good since I’ve been back. Still gotta come up with a good “analogy” this season….

  3. O&BinCostaRica says:

Not surprised by the Joe Mays comment. He’s been ballin’ all preseason.

    GO BRONCOS!

  4. DenverOranges says:

    Joe Mays is one BAMF!

  5. BeastFromEast92 says:

Glad to see Mays getting some props from Fox,Mays is a Damn good ILB,and I think Irving will be a good one too!

I hope Tebow starts tomorrow night!!!

Hey Everyone……….I’m back. Jeez, you get away from the blog for a week and it feels like forever! LOL Didn’t get a chance to watch the last game but looked at the stats and it seems like our starters had a solid outing.

I feel our team is almost ready to start the season…..and I’m so stoked to get it started.

Bay……my prediction for the season is 7-9…..and losing those nine in pretty tight games. I feel that this season will be the set up to a great winning season next year where we’ll get at least 10 wins. But I just don’t see it happening with that crazy schedule we have this year. I just want to see our team be competitive…..and if that comes with more than 7 W’s, I’ll be extremely stoked!

I think Cutler was a physically gifted person with strength, speed, and a powerful arm – BUT(T) he never had the brain or heart of a champion. It seems to me he is/was quick to give up when thing went wrong or adversity set in. ALSO he was a BABY with his demands of being traded in the first place!!!

Hind sight is 20/20 but they let a bunch of talent out the door during McD’s reign: Cutler, Marshal, Hillis, (even guys he drafted like the CB they sent to Detroit)!!! It was a dark era for Denver Bronco Football. I fully believe he had a plan, sceme, and idea = it just never fully developed and came to life. WHILE he traded almost every talented player we had left over from previous drafts!!!

    GO BRONCOS!!! 8)

  8. letdamansmoke says:

I’ve been loving the intesitity Mays brings every down. He’s hard-hitting, rarely misses an assignment, and he just has this nasty “I ain’t takin Sh!^ from anyone” demeanor that I just love. Just gotta keep bringing it.

So far I’ve been very pleased with what i’ve seen this preseason. For the first time in years, we’ve actually addressed our needs on defense and with an offense like ours that seems to be able to move the ball at will, sky’s the limit.

Bay, as far as my prediction goes, this one’s a little tough. Every year i put us down for 9-11 wins, (call it blind Colorado homerism), but this year I truly think we’re gonna be the surprise of the NFL.

Put me down for a regular season record of….(drum roll) 9-7. Sadly enough, I think that should be enough to win the division.

    Keep the faith Bronco Nation,

    Still Smokin, and i’m out!!

  9. Orange_Crusher says:

    Clady throws a pass…. Man I know it’s comming!!

I bet we see Clady get a TD pass this year….

Maybe it will be Clady to Tebow for 6…..

    ILMSDB!!!

  10. baylinorcrush says:

Yeah, Fox loves Mays, makes you wonder why he went with Irving instead of a DT, well not really, I know Fox doesn’t care for DTs but knowing what he knows now he must be thinking that one over. Because behing Mays is Haggan, not Irving, this will just be a learning out year for him.

  11. baylinorcrush says:

letdamansmoke, that’s one of the all time coolest handle and I don’t even smoke.

  12. baylinorcrush says:

Brady Quinn will start tomorrow, I bank on that.

  13. baylinorcrush says:

The only way I see 9-7 winning the division is if Rivers is injured and out, that was in reference to letdamansmoke, that’s even fun to type, LOL.

  14. BeastFromEast92 says:

I wonder why we even still got Weber on the roster,no way we keep 4 QBs!

I’d say he won’t make the next cut!

  15. BeastFromEast92 says:

6 years smoke free here, after 20 years of smoking!

  16. baylinorcrush says:

Agreed, no way they have 4, unheard of, but they like him enough for the PS.

  17. baylinorcrush says:

Good for you. I smoked for one year, when I was 16, over a pack a day, then I said this is stupid, imagine the money I saved over the years…

  18. baylinorcrush says:

What about trying to find 27 names to cut on our roster? Talk about an unenviable job…

  19. BeastFromEast92 says:

Maybe they know something we don’t,if they keep him on the PS,Orton and Quinn both could be gone next year,or will they????

If at least one of them are gone,Weber may being kept for backup or 3rd string next year, just saying.

  20. BeastFromEast92 says:

Man that would be a rough job, cutting 27 guys!

  21. baylinorcrush says:

Yeah I looked at it and I got tired after finding about 10 names….

  22. BeastFromEast92 says:

Yeah I could probably buy a couple of houses with the money I spent on those stupid things!!!!!
My wife still smokes so I’m still spending money on the nasty things!

  23. BeastFromEast92 says:

Trimming the Roster is Fox’s job?
or is it Elways or both?

  24. baylinorcrush says:

You know who has three more years on his contract at a hefty pay, Orton will want big long term money and Quinn will not work for $700,000 again so I think that would make Weber for future back up enticing.

  25. BeastFromEast92 says:

I’d imagine Xanders should have some stroke too,but don’t know if he does or not!

  26. baylinorcrush says:

I’m sure they will all sit in the office including Xanders and every assistant coach on Friday to finalize the list, not one or two guy’s input will suffice.

  27. BeastFromEast92 says:

I’d say Orton will definitely be gone,IDK about Quinn,I guess it all depends on how much EFX likes him and if he continues to improve,if they offer him a bigger contract,I think he throws a Helluva lot of ints myself!

  28. BeastFromEast92 says:

Nice chattin’ bay,but momma says it’s suppertime, later man!

  29. baylinorcrush says:

    One per practice.

  30. baylinorcrush says:

Good light chat, the best kind.

  31. strandoftds says:

Tomorrow night is 2nd teams night and then it`s the real deal. It`s coming up quickly.

  32. baylinorcrush says:

    Ok, my 27 cuts:

    Bowen, Alvin LB
    Brown, Ronnell DT
    Byers, Jeff G
    Davis, Britt WR
    Goodwin, D’Andre WR
    Gronkowski, Dan TE
    Hamler, Jamel WR
    Harris, Chris CB
    Hauschka, Steven K
    Minor, Brandon RB
    Olsen, Eric G
    Orton, Greg WR
    Pressley, DeMario DT
    Riley, Eron WR
    Unrein, Mitch DT
    Weber, Adam QB
    Sylvester, Austin RB
    Robinson, Lee SLB
    Grant, Adam T
    McBath, Darcel S
    Green, Virgil TE
    Bing, Brandon CB
    Hunter, Jason DE
    Mohamed, Mike MLB
    Ramirez, Manny G

    That’s 25

Plus Warren and Demarius put on the PUP =27

    and 8 to the PS:

    Mohamed
    Bing
    Weber
    Green
    Sylvester
    Davis
    Riley
    Grant

    Or something like that.

And I know people will say no way we cut Green, no way we cut Mohamed, no way we cut McBath but just look at the roster, it gets awful hard to find guys to cut after like the 20th guy. Anyhow I’ll see how that list stands by the weekend.

  33. O&BinCostaRica says:

I like the list. I couldn’t find arguments against any of the cuts or PS.

  34. royalbroncofan1 says:

DT 6’5″ 275lbs… Ben Garland from Grand Junction on Military Reserve list.

This is what I found on Garland at DP “First and Orange.”

“Garland’s committment is for five years. But after two he can apply for a military sports program and if he’s accepted, he can report to the reserves for six years, allowing him to play football”.

Just curious as we’re thin at DT position.

  35. BeastFromEast92 says:

bay that’s a pretty good list,I’ll agree with it as long as you got Sylvester,Bing and Mohomed on the PS!
but I have to give Hunter a ????,don’t know if he’ll get cut,but Hell some people’s gotta get cut, afterall we have no choice!!!
but that’s a good list tho!

PS:I figure Bruton will beat out McBath too!
Bruton is a Beast on ST!

  36. royalbroncofan1 says:

Nice list bay… Forgot about Jason Hunter. Should be a good battle between Harvey and Hunter for backup DE spot. One to watch tomorrow night.

That would leave Hochstein and Daniels for backup at G, plus Taylor and Clark with OT.
Former Texas Tech Red Raider Manny Ramirez has been running with the two’s at Center.

  37. baylinorcrush says:

Yeah, but you can only keep like 9 Olineman tops and with 5 positions on the Oline you can’t have twos at every one, so I figure scrap back up center as we have Beadles and Hochstein who are pretty versatile. It’s tough, I spent quite a while on it and obviously there were positions where I could go with one or the other but at a point you gotta make a decision before you get a headache, LOL. Plus I kept in mind who were McD’s guys and who are Fox’s guys too, Harvey vs Hunter.

  38. eternalorangeandblue says:

its gonna be a hard roster to assemble. really cuts down on the good depth we have but hey, can only have 53. oh well hopefully we have a very competitive year and bolster our depth in the draft next year

  39. baylinorcrush says:

And on top of that, after the cut, every single guy we bring in from another team we will have to cut one more of ours to do so, so 27 is just the start, like I said earlier we will end up cutting over 30 is my guess.

  40. royalbroncofan1 says:

Oh ok, for some reason thought it was 10.
Olsen played G & C at Notre Dame, but has struggled with the three’s.
Hochstein can also backup the tackle position. Ramirez can is also versatile and can play G and C. Beadles was an OT in college, but slide into G position. I think he played some tackle last season but struggled.
At any rate, I’m sure your list will be very close or right on it.

  41. baylinorcrush says:

It very well might be 10, I just remember 9 as an O line number…

  42. shaztah says:

I found this article and found it interesting! It was released in 1985 when I was 18 so I had NO IDEA about this. It sure sounds familiar though……….

  43. royalbroncofan1 says:

I just looked it up bay… McD carried 10 offensive lineman last season.

I did look up to see how many Coach Fox carried with the Panthers and he only carried 8 o-lineman for the last 3 years!
McD had 6 d-lineman but that was with 3-4. Coach Fox carried 9 d-lineman for last 3 years with combo of 4 dt’s and 5 de’s one year and flip flopped year before. Be interesting to see if he sticks to this same headcount.

  44. baylinorcrush says:

    Thanks, that brought back memories.

  45. baylinorcrush says:

    Thanks for that info rbf1.

  46. baylinorcrush says:

    So something like:

    3 ST
    3 QB
    5 RB
    9 OL
    3 TE
    6 WR
    9 DL
    7 LB
    4 S
    4 CB

or 4 TE and 5 WR.

  47. royalbroncofan1 says:

    No prob bay.

  48. letdamansmoke says:

Well, thank you for showing the handle some love. It was in reference to Travis Henry (see how well that worked out). But i was a fan when he was here and that’s when i joined these boards, soo…..yup.

I agree with most of your cuts Bay, but i would love to see Virgil Green get a chance to develop. Has the makings of a young Antonio Gates. I’d also like for us to Keep McBath for Special Teams…the kid’s got some speed. Other than that, no real losses in that group.

    Aiight, back to work!! ugh.

    Still smokin, and i’m out!!

  49. royalbroncofan1 says:

I did notice he carried 5 WR.
