Preseason Week 4: Wednesday Practice Blog

August 29th, 2012 - 1:25pm by Tyler Everett

The Broncos completed a practice in shorts, shells and helmets Wednesday morning in their final practice before flying to Arizona to take on the Cardinals in Thursday night’s preseason finale.

ROLL CALL
Just two players, guards Chris Kuper (forearm) and Tony Hills (neck) missed Wednesday’s practice due to injuries.

PLAYMAKERS

  • Quarterback Brock Osweiler found wide receiver Matthew Willis in the end zone for a short touchdown completion during an early-practice red zone session.
  • On his first rep of the practice, quarterback Peyton Manning found wide receiver Demaryius Thomas in stride for a one-handed touchdown grab in the back of the end zone.
  • Thomas made another long catch later in the practice, again getting behind the defense to haul in a pass from Manning deep down the middle of the field.
  • Wide receiver Jason Hill managed to make a tough catch along the sideline despite good coverage from cornerback Tony Carter, who was complimented for being in perfect position just behind Hill.
  • During a red zone drill, linebacker Nate Irving made a nice break on the football to nearly secure an interception along the sideline just in front of the pylon.
  • Quarterback Adam Weber completed a deep pass to wide receiver Andre Caldwell, who pulled in the reception despite having to fight for position with Carter.
  • Rookie cornerback Omar Bolden recorded an interception on a short pass thrown near the sideline.
  • Tight end Cornelius Ingram came up with a long reception from Weber in traffic over the middle of the field.

QUICK HIT
Defensive Coordinator Jack Del Rio wore a headset and a wrist sleeve during practice to simulate making the play calls for the defense.

Wolfedom in response to your last blog

I dont know any coach that would ever ask their players to field a punt within the 5 yard line preseason or not. Also adding the lateral he obviously wasnt thinking. Only thing I can think of is that he felt he was in danger and needed to make something happen to stand out. If that is the case then he made the wrong decision.

About Ayers he hasnt stood out or showed any improvements. He has stayed the same. We have other guys who can do exactly what hes done who have more potential and have actually been working to improve and what they do on the field shows that.

Moreno I dont know what your talking about only seeing his skills in preseason. I have seen them every year in the regular season as well. So I have known he has talent. I just never saw him fight for extra yards before. And the question about him is can he stay healthy and unless we trade him for a 5th or higher pick id take that risk. Its not like hes going to be our main back. He will most likely be the 3rd or 4th back.

Well AB, it could be that you don’t know every coach. How many coaches would have tried an on side kick when it was attempted. You say that Ayers is not standing out, but that again is your opinion not fact as you stated earlier. How valuable is a played on injured reserve every season? I agree Moreno has talent but so do many players, its putting it on the field that counts. jmho

Wolfedom fielding a punt within 5 yards is something that you dont do at any level of the game High School College or NFL. I have heard multiple coaches talk about it when a player does that and something bad happens. You let it bounce into the endzone for the better field position. Something every coach has said. Dont see why Fox who plays the field position style would ask them to do that even in a preseason game.

Ayers isnt standing out. He hasnt made any plays. He has looked the same as he did last year. No signs of improvement and part of me would say even worse than last year because he was making plays towards the end of the year and hasnt done anything this year. Not in practice that ive heard about or in any of the games. He has a role that can be taken by one of our younger guys who has actually done stuff during preseason and practices. If you can go through and find any good/great plays he made this offseason then I am wrong. But I have watched the three games 5 or 6 times and have looked at our D and tried to find players who are making plays and doing good and Ayers isnt one of them. He has been in the right place but so have the other guys weve had and they have at least made plays.

Also Moreno may or may not end up on IR. It is a risk I wouldnt mind taking. Why because with his talent and healthy he can be a 1200+ all purpose yard player. He is also very cheap. Yes injury is a big risk but if he goes down it wouldnt be hard to go out and sign a guy or even bring up JJ (If he is on the PS and not 53 man roster) who can contribute like Moreno. Again he isnt going to be our 1st or 2nd string running back which would make it a tad harder if he got hurt. But our 3rd or 4th back. Behind McGahee and Hillman and even possibly Fumbles. What he can do is worth that risk if the best teams are offering is a 6th round pick. Anything higher I would say trade him. But 6th or 7th round I would take the risk.

AB, we all know you don’t field that punt during regular season. With the hew kick offs there isn’t much chance to field punts. I don’t know that they wanted to try a return but you don’t know that they didn’t. Do you think in normal game time they would have attempted that onside kick? In your opinion Ayers isn’t doing anything, we’ll see if your opinion means anything on the day of final cuts. I remember not so long ago you were upset we were getting the neck and losing Tebow. So I think you’re opinion changes, as does mine. Lets just wait and see.

  10. alaskanbronco06 says:

Well I know my opinion doesnt really matter for what the front office does it is my opinion. Everyone has one about what they think the front office should do and if it happens or not I will support their choice because they have more insight into practice. What I say about practice it strictly things I hear through other people.

But fact of the matter is if you watch the preseason you can see Ayers do little to nothing. So while it is my opinion it is based on his performance which is the fact that backs it up. And taking into what he did towards the end last season his play shouldnt be like it is. It should be better.

Also onside kick is one thing. And if the punt was a bit earlier in the game I wouldnt be making a deal of it. But it was toward the end of a close game and even though its preseason teams still want and try to win. Fielding that punt set them way back instead of the 5. And asking to field it is also one thing but to lateral it back when there was only one bronco and 5 or 6 Niners there is nothing to to help plead your case. That is pure stupidity right there. As was fielding the punt.

Also onside kicks can really change a game so I can see why they practiced one. But no matter the situation in a game you never field a punt within the 5 yard line unless there is a opposing player standing on the endzone line to make sure it doesnt go it. Which wasnt the case. So there was no need to practice that. And especially no need to lateral it. Having Weber do a minute to win it from the 20 wouldve been a lot better than the 1.

Also yes my opinion changes about things as does everyone. I was against Manning and for Tebow until I saw Manning throw and heard more about his neck injury. Doesnt mean I dont like Tebow any less or that no part of me wishes he still here. Because part of me does.

And I am waiting and seeing. Doesnt mean I cant speculate or say my opinion about how what I hope/thinks will happen. Or that I even shouldnt.
