Preseason Week 4: Monday Practice Blog

August 29th, 2011 - 3:07pm by Max Henson

After a day off following Saturday’s victory against Seattle, the Broncos were back on the field Monday at Dove Valley, practicing in shells as they prepare for Thursday’s final exhibition against Arizona.

ROLL CALL
Linebacker D.J. Williams and defensive lineman Brodrick Bunkley both missed practice after sustaining injuries against the Seahawks.
Offensive lineman Chris Kuper and defensive tackle Kevin Vickerson also did not participate.

Russ Hochstein worked with the first-team O-line in place of Kuper and Jeremy Jarmon and Ryan McBean ran with the first-team D-line in place of Bunkley and Vickerson. Wesley Woodyard served as Williams’ replacement at linebacker.

Safety David Bruton and linebacker Mario Haggan practiced after being held out of Saturday’s game.

DAILY JUKEBOX

“Look At Me Now” – Chris Brown ft. Lil Wayne and Busta Rhymes
“Song 2” – Blur

POSTION DRILLS
The team broke into groups and the defense immediately went to work on fumble drills. Each position practiced strip sacks and the linebackers later went through a footwork drill before scooping up a loose ball.

The quarterbacks worked with wide receivers on sideline routes, with the wideouts working on controlling the ball with two feet in bounds.

The tight ends, meanwhile, focused on blocking.

PLAYMAKERS
The defensive backs were credited with several interceptions today.

The first one was provided by cornerback Perrish Cox, who intercepted Adam Weber during team drills.

Later on in 7-on-7 drills, cornerback Champ Bailey picked off Brady Quinn and Chris Harris came down with an interception shortly thereafter – catching the ball after Kyle Orton’s pass bounced off of Eric Decker.

Rahim Moore intercepted Quinn when the team returned to team drills and David Bruton picked off a short pass from Tim Tebow. But Tebow responded immediately, connecting with D’Andre Goodwin deep down the left sideline on the next play.

Bruton recorded the final interception of the session and received a rowdy applause from his defensive teammates after he jumped a route and stretched out to make a highlight-reel catch.

Running back Jeremiah Johnson produced some big plays during a 9-on-9 running game-only session, reaching the end zone on three separate occasions from 20 yards out.

QUICK HITS

  • Willis McGahee kept himself plenty busy during special teams drills, doing a set of weighted lunges and a set of squats off to the side. The running back also did some sprinting on his own.
  • Brian Dawkins spent time on the stationary bike during the special teams portion of practice.
  • Tebow and Adam Weber ran routes for one another towards the end of the session.
  • Conditioning continued today with the players not involved with special teams running 40-yard gassers on the far field.

BTW, Bay, I’ll go with 9-7. Fox said Weber’s play will be a game time decision… I think it’s pretty safe to say we should see some extended action from him. I hope there is a spot for Chris Harris, I like his style, fast, aggressive, plus got a pick in practice. Man, another 27 players we have to cut loose, plus whoever we pick up after other teams cut their DT’s. I was looking at the roster, and we are going to have quite a few rookies make our squad. Just goes to show how bad off we really were. Chester Taylor anyone?

By the way: Gloom: A state of depression or despondency:

Somehow that doesn’t seem to describe millers game. Nah, NJ nickname shoulda been gloom, for the feeling he inspires in fans when he gives up huge plays.

Nah, it’s got to to be Von DOOM. Plotting the demise of all nfl QBs. Even our own, in practice, haha.

      *****************************

BOTH DOOM & GLOOM are what the other teams are suppose to feel – and it has nothing to do with the player of Miller being gloomy! LOL And obviosly DOOM is from his name and make the other team feel “Doom” for the feeling of despair when they line up and see both Miller and Doom across the ball from them! Then again it might just be a “nickname”?!?!?!?!

      LMAO

      kearly37,

It wasn’t just the one drop that has had me worried, but the multitude of drops over the past few years!

I sure hope I am wrong about Royal – he is a very well liked guy in Denver and a good person on and off the field. I would just rather not have to count on him on third down or crunch time. He is not a sure handed guy like I see in Decker and Lloyd!

I’m not trying to knock the guy and I sure hope he proves me wrong this year!!! I do however, love what he brings to Special Teams as a returner! I hope he doesn’t loose those duties – but he probably will!

      GO BRONCOS 8)

      true2broncos,

I always compare eddie to desean jackson because we drafted him while jackson was on the board. I think eddie plays better in the slot and would like to see deck outside and eddie inside.

Oh dude, I missed that, thats classic, I like it.

Champ will do great as a Nickel Corner,it’s the other Corner spot I’m scared to death of,but if we can keep the heat on,Goody can hold up his end,IDK about Vaughn against top WRs tho!

I’m glad to see my DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM post from 6 hours ago has transposed itself this long and into another blog. Or did it just get rejuvinated?

Just a reiteration for those of us who will be at games this year….DOOOOOOOOOOOOM is the chant we are going to bring to the mile high air when Elvis makes a play. I tried to get it going in 09 but it never caught on. Of course GLOOOOOOOOOOOOM is a viable option for Miller.

    22. royalbroncofan1 says:

Glad to read Nate Jones was cut! We were hoping that was the last nail in the coffin with interference call vs. Seahawks…. whew !!! Hasta la Vista Jones!!

    23. raidrhadr says:

      Remember… DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!!!! It’s a household name.

    24. 1nOnlyTRB says:

Is it just me or did quinn throw like 3 INTs? lol … he seems to throw at least one every practice … but as long as he shows up on game day … i guess.

Royal will be fine … lets just say he is out of practice during games … afterall for the last 2 years McD used him as a lawn ornament. I also compare him to Desean because they were both taken in the 2nd round and are very similar in weight, height and speed.

I like Royal on the outsides, thats where he played his rookie season. Not a fan of him in the slot. Thats more Deckers thing … Not as fast as Royal but has been very sure handed since college as far as recieving … he does have a small fumble issue, like a couple times last year i believe, and even in last game … tho it wasn’t a fumble … I don’t like close to fumbles either. Royal will tear it up as an outside reciever … believe it. He just needs to get reacquainted to actually being of use. He is a great guy from what i can tell as well … very well liked … and very active on twitter and facebook with the fans.

    25. timmah says:

I honestly think vaughn will do well. He is fast and feisty, quick to break up passes, hasn’t been beat really, and has champ and dawk to learn him.

    26. strandoftds says:

BFE, you got it bro. It`ll be budlight too, honost to goodness1 LOL

    27. nc.bronco says:

Anyone think that Cox will make the 53? With a good defense attorney, he won’t be tried until next summer!

    28. sirobertvondoom says:

      TRB,

maybe your right, the only reason i say it is because he is short, Decker looks like a big dude that can go up and get it. Either way im lovin our receiver group!

    29. raidrhadr says:

I think C Vaughn should return punts too. So far the best I’ve seen was Syd’quan

    30. strandoftds says:

A heads up for yall. I`m listening to 850 KOA, the Denver Broncos home station and word is by Denver Post writer Dave Kreiger that DT Broderick Bunckley left the stadium on saturday night with a slight limp and no ice wrapped around his leg. Kreiger thinks Bunkley might play this thursday, maybe. If not He should be raring to go by the season opener. Sounds optistic since Kreier is usualy a negative nancy. Just something I heard. I like Bunkley.

    31. JJ4real says:

Glad to see Jeremiah having some success in practice. The sky is the limit for this guy

    32. sirobertvondoom says:

i see cox going to jail, dont understand how guys delay trials for so long. If cox does end up being innocent i think he could end up being a big playmaker

    33. strandoftds says:

Jeremiah will make the roster in my estimation. He`s far better than Ball. Johnson has what it takes to make the team, he`s a gamer.

    34. nc.bronco says:

I have a feeling that the Broncos have taken the position that he isn’t guilty until he is tried, and he can play alot of football before then. My guess is that the trial won’t happen until after this season, so they’ll know one way or the other what his “availability” is for next year . . .

    35. strandoftds says:

      ooops, optimistic. Wrong spelling.

Dchale, BFE now has a beer in each hand. One from you and I. LOL

    39. alexanserg says:

      Repost for Bay:

      I see a 10-6 season. That’s my prediction.

I mean, I thought we had an 8 win team last year, and maybe we would have if we hadn’t lost Doom. We had no pass rush. And doom is a solid all around player. He is good against the run too. Even so, we almost beat a couple quality teams like the jets.

With Von DOOM, a better defensive scheme in general, a much better run game, and a well established passing game, I see no reason we can’t have an excellent year. Mind you my prediction is contingent upon our starters staying healthy.

The packers and the pats are the toughest teams on our schedule (maybe the chargers too, but thats divisional). Bears are tough, but with their weak line, we might be sacking Cutler 9 times or so. Would love seeing Cutler getting rag dolled by our pass rush.

    40. alexanserg says:

BTW, under shanny, somehow we always seemed to have the Pats’ number. Even under McD, we beat them (that was in that anomalous 6-0 start though, so …).

But for the league in general it seems the surest (and indeed, at times, the only) way to beat the pats is by punching Brady in the mouth, so to speak.

That’s how the giants did it to make the pats go 18-1 (that was so depressing to me. As I mentioned earlier, pats are my second favorite team (by a large margin). And even just as a fan of the league, I would have loved to watch a team go 19-0 (unless it was KC, SD, or Oak. We would never hear the end of that).

But if you watched the lions/pats game last weekend, you saw that the Lions were getting after him, knocking him down, sacking him multiple times. And sure enough, suddenly Brady didn’t look like Brady. He was inaccurate (threw a lot of bounce passes), and nervous.

My point is, if our pass rush truly is what it looks like, the pats might actually be one of the easier games on our schedule. We know DOOM is well capable of a 10+ sack season from DE because he has done it. And that was when he was our only legitimate pass rush threat. With an equally tallented guy on the other side, it should be easier for both of them, since teams will be hard pressed indeed to scheme for both of them.

    41. true2broncos says:

      sirobertvondoom,

I know what you mean about the Desean Jackson comparison, and if I’m being honest I thought D Jackson would be a flop in Philly! He’s surprised and surpassed my expextations there. However, I just can’t shake the fact that I get worried about Royal trying to catch a ball in a crowd. It sure is not for lack of effort – some guys are just bigger, stronger, and more sure handed! I hope he blows me out of the water this season and he is the talk of the league and all you see in Denver for years to come are #19 jerseys = I’m sorry I just don’t see it myself!

I kind of think we will see a return to #80, #84, #87, and of course a huge upswing of #58 and #92 – along with #24 of course!!!

    42. alexanserg says:

      #’s I would buy. 78, 24, 58, 92 … and that is just about it.

    43. DBFanFromAzViaMd says:

Long time Bronco fan and first time poster.Been reading the boards for awhile but am just more of a reader.Gotta chime in with my nickname for the newfound(reborn)defense.Particularly the front 7.

      Von DOOOOOOM!!!!!!!!!

    46. nc.bronco says:

IF this defense becomes what we hope it will (and that may take another draft with a big time DL or two), and the Broncos go back to the Orange jerseys, then it just may be that the media start calling it, what else, but the Orange Crush! I don’t see how that won’t happen, and it’s about time!

    48. 1nOnlyTRB says:

Ummm I believe they have taken the stance of innocent until proven guilty as well with Cox … thats how the law opperates, Broncos won’t be any different, but once he is found guilty, there goes that. I personally think if they are trying to send a message, they should cut him, he can easily be found innocent because of lawyer mumbo jumbo but that wouldn’t mean he was. Altho I think he is going down. I read an 11 page report on the accounts and he looked SOOO guilty. Plus the lady says its not about money … but who knows … when they show her the money maybe it will be different. But for a guy (cox) who says he never had sex with her, never touched her … etc … amazing how he came away being the father … kinda gotta have sex to be a father (well no u dont, a woman can just steal ur condom and artificially inseminate herself — HIGHLY unlikely but possible, thats why u should always flush lol) but That does NOT seem to be the case … at all lol. TMI i know, sorry. TRB
