Preseason Week 3: Tuesday Practice Blog

August 23rd, 2011 - 1:14pm by Max Henson

Here’s a complete update from Tuesday morning’s padded practice.

ROLL CALL
Linebacker Mario Haggan sat out practice today as he continues to nurse a shoulder injury suffered against Buffalo.

Safety David Bruton missed practice again after as he recovers from a concussion suffered vs. the Bills. Head Coach John Fox said Bruton “is doing fine.”

Offensive lineman Stanley Daniels participated in practice after missing some time due to injury.

DAILY JUKEBOX
Songs from today’s stretching session were:

  • “The Rising” – Bruce Springsteen
  • “Live Your Life” – T.I. feat. Rihanna
  • DRILL STATIONS
After the team stretch, the players broke into position drills and the entire defense spent time working on forcing and recovering fumbles at various stations.

While the defensive backs worked on strip-sacks, the linebackers spent a good amount of time shedding blocks.

On the offensive side of the ball, the wide receivers worked on catching deep passes to the corner. They had the added challenge of battling the sun, which was right in their eyes as they looked up to make the catch.

The fullbacks -– Austin Sylvester and Spencer Larsen -– worked off to the side, attacking a sled with Running Backs coach Eric Studesville barking out orders. The running backs ran through footwork drills.

After position work, the offense and defense came together to work against one another.

Three members of the O-line went up against two D-linemen and a linebacker in a run drill where they worked on filling gaps.

Wide receivers and defensive backs went up against each other and while the offense usually had the upper-hand, safety Kyle McCarthy and cornerback Andre’ Goodman each made nice plays locating the deep ball and making up ground to force an incompletion.

    TEAM DRILLS
The first team session was almost entirely run-based.

Defensive coaches instructed players to swarm, wrap-up and try to strip the ball loose during each and every play. Linebacker Wesley Woodyard was particularly active during the session, making several stops in the backfield.

The following team session involved more passing plays and quarterback Kyle Orton produced a couple highlights.

  • Orton stepped up in the pocket and delivered a strike over the middle to Eric Decker to get the offense going.
  • Later, Orton rolled right and lofted a perfectly weighted pass over a defender and right into the hands of tight end Daniel Fells for the completion.
  • QUICK HITS

  • Von Miller made his presence felt, getting to Orton off the edge for what would have been a clear sack. Derrick Harvey recorded a sack of his own with Brady Quinn under center.
  • Demaryius Thomas worked with a trainer on the sideline, doing several agility drills and completing some high-step jogging.
  • While the special teams units went to work, everyone else got some conditioning in as players ran 40-yard sprints for the first time.
  • “We’re getting used to our in-season practice schedule,” Fox said. “We don’t condition in camp, but we condition when the season starts.”

I hope bruton is ok. Don’t know if he is going to make the team this year. We really need to be a great run stop D. We’ve got to get our tackle situation figured out. I think once cuts start, we’ll be claiming people right and left. Looking forward to Saturday.

    2. mcmcnees says:

How do you like this Tebow fodder….

Broncos officials see Tebow as fourth best QB in camp

“If everything was totally equal, and this were a competition based only on performance at this camp, Tebow would probably be the fourth-string guy,” one source told Silver. “Kyle [Orton] is far and away the best, and Tebow’s way behind [Brady] Quinn, too. And I’m telling you, Adam Weber is flat-out better right now.”

    3. 1nOnlyTRB says:

I find it funny that at an advanced training facility, they use seran wrap and football on a dummy for fumble stripping drills. With all the money in the world no one has invented a better system or something? lol.

    4. baylinorcrush says:

Thanks for all the positive non Tebow posts on the last blog fellow bloggers, you already restored most of my belief in our fans and I was down in the dump about it as you could tell, just sick of it. Thanks again, gotta go busy guy today.

    5. broncosfreak30 says:

I find it great that to see both Fells and Daniels but out practicing! Daniels had been out for a little while with an injury while I believe Fells got nicked up yesterday but apparently it wasn’t serious at all with him back out there today!! Orton sounds like he is better than he ever has been before! Lets hope he plays like that all season and stays healthy! Also, love hearing Miller is still tearing it up!! I think Miller will win defensive rookie of the year easily this year!! Him and Doom should be a very strong force this year!! Here’s to seeing Doom and Miller getting their first sacks of the season against Campbell in our Monday night opener against the hated Faiders!!!

    6. broncosfreak30 says:

      What a first terrible sentence!

      I think I’ll re-do that!

I find it great to see both Fells and Daniels back out practicing! Haha, that’s better!

    7. broncosfreak30 says:

      And again,

What a terrible first sentence!! My boys are pumping me up so much about this coming season that apparently I can’t even type!

    8. Bro says:

I hope the “Brute” gets better and makes the team as well, great special teamer.

    9. Broncfalls says:

      Broncosfreak30, agree 100%

Doom and Miller are going to be exciting for years to come! Best wishes to a healthy career, talent will take care of the rest!

Also, I really want to see a hungry, nasty, aggressive defense! THEN….sprinkle in a balanced offensive attack and I think it could interesting around the league!

I look for Kyle to have a very good year.

      GO GET EM’ BOYS!

    10. randy2191 says:

      P:colquit

    11. Bro says:

I wouldnt mind a Clinton Portis return to Denver. I think he has a good 2/3 years left in him if he stays healthy and would be a solid third string back behind Moreno and McGahee. Just a thought though..

    12. broncosfreak30 says:

Also I found this picture of Miller sacking Fitzpatrick this past Saturday for his first NFL sack and it is now my desktop background picture! Figure I would share it with y’all!!

      http://broncotalk.net/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/vonmiller.jpg

    13. broncosfreak30 says:

      Randy…

Looks good but I really think with us signing Rosario that we will keep 4 TE’s on our team and he will be the 3rd-4th one. Just my opinion!

    14. Bro says:

Sick picture BF30!! Thanks for sharing, alot more of those pictures to come this season!

    15. randy2191 says:

i had rosario on there 3rd and green 4th but i couldnt find someone else who we could cut we need another OL that can play all positions so i thaught about maybe hochstein leaving, also considered mcbath and jarmon leaving.. and then thaught maybe just cut paxton and have kuper or walton long snap haha

    16. 1nOnlyTRB says:

      Thx for the pic freak

    17. broncosfreak30 says:

You’re welcome guys! Glad you enjoyed it! It will be really fun collecting all these pictures over Millers career! I figure there will be MANY more of these!! I’m going ahead and predicting Miller get double digit sacks! Even most of the analysts have predicted that as well with as well as a pro bowl and defensive rookie of the year!

    18. gabeharter says:

Tebow produced 11 TDs with 3 starts as a rookie. Elway produced 8 TDs in 10 starts as a rookie. Wonder where Horsehead would fit on the chart if he was 23 years old again? ELWAY IS SO GOOD….. AND TEBOW IS 4TH string HHAHA!

    19. Drunkenbronc says:

Horse head? Stick to watching the gators.

    20. MANDIEGO says:

With this (stupid) new kickoff rule basically eliminating the kick return aspect of the game I think players like Bruton will be cut. I thought he had some potential, but with our draft picks I don’t see him making this team. In fact, might as well just keep one kicker and plan to punt the ball out of bounds and just eliminate the need for special teams players. Use those spots to gain depth at some of the more important spots like DE, DT and O-line, RB etc….

    21. randy2191 says:

actually tebow had 7tds in 3 starts along with 3 ints and a fumble.. the other 4 tds came in special packages in redzone throughout the other 13 games.. still considered better than 8tds in 10 games.

    22. since 86 says:

Nice pick BF30, already have it my desktop. If u have anymore send it to my email,lawp76@gmail.com

      pump blue, bleed orange!

    23. MANDIEGO says:

Tebow will be the 3rd stringer this year. Unlike most 3rd string QB’s in this league he will have special red zone/ goal line packages that will get him into the game.

    24. 1nOnlyTRB says:

Yea, the special teams thing is really annoying. I mean prater used to have touchbacks all the time already, now it is gauranteed, especially if he is kicking in mile high. remember like a year or so ago I thought Prater would break the touchback record. I bet he does this season. Kickers are getting stronger and better. By far the worst rule, and Special teams is officially pointless with the exception of PR … lotta jobs will be lost. TRB

    25. 1nOnlyTRB says:

Ty Warren will be out for 3-4 months. I wasn’t a fan when i heard we were interested, because he had just come off a injury and I was over 30 plus D linemen, but we got him anyway, and got burned. Coulda happened to anyone I suppose. Luckily Vickerson and Bunkley are doing well. Especially Bunkley. I believe he is number 77 and I saw alot of him against Buffalo. TRB

    26. millertime2 says:

I had a post yesterday stateing that Adam Weber was looking real good in camp. Ive seen this kid play hes a very good QB good mechanics quick thinker, goes thru progressions very well. The Organization has alot of options which is very good for our draft future, specially with all the teams that need QBs.

    27. txwinebergs says:

I want it to be known that the broncos names Mr. Quitter as the starter. I hope to all ends Mr Quitter either breaks his back by getting hit so hard it ends his career, and is out for ever, or shows his true colors and ruins our season to get rid of Fox & Orton in the same day faster then we got rid of McDaniels. I love the broncos, I hate the business decision behind not giving Tebow the ability to take over and shine. Elway was not perfect when he started.

Hell Andy Dalton of all people is taking over the bengals, Cam Newton, and Bradford all starting QB’s who didnt accomplish as much as Tebow ever did. Sure he has mechanics to work on, but ya know what. I could work with mechanics then work with a 100 PURE BLOODED QUITTER like Orton. I have been raised a broncos fan from birth, I have raised my kids to be broncos fans, but I DO NOT LIKE QUITTERS and ORTON is a quitter. Last year he lost all my respect and they should have just waived him or given him up for a 3rd rounder because honestly thats over payment for him

    28. txwinebergs says:

And for a few more quick points… DON’T FORGET THE 59-14 loss ((CHOKE CHOKE CHOKE)) loss we took at HOME against the RAIDERS.. Mr Quitter was 3-14 on the year total…. SO the reason we are all hating on Mr Quitter is because his record last year stood out to be such a joke, that TIM was better in the end, and TIM could win more games then Mr QUITTER ever will. But what hurts the most is that disgusting loss to Oakland at home.. Now tell me you LOVE Mr Quitter. Tell me how Mr Quitter is so much better this year in Pre Season then he was last year. With so many years of Experience to do what he did to our team last year, is not EVER WORTHY of another starting role… HELL BRIAN GRIESE was better then Mr QUITTER!!!

    29. shaztah says:

I guess everyone has selective memory. No one remembers this..

      http://www.onlygators.com/04/28/2011/john-elway-on-tim-tebow-im-his-biggest-fan/

The lockout hurt him more than everyone thought but Fox did say that he doesn’t want a practice player but a “gamer”. We will see if Orton is that or will he fold just like last year.

    30. sndvl says:

Richard Quinn cleared waivers. He is now on IT

    31. sndvl says:

      IR. Oops. Lol

    32. sndvl says:

Txwinebergs, if Orton goes down, Quinn will be next in line. So. You’re gonna have to hope twice as hard for career ending injuries!!!

    33. 1nOnlyTRB says:

lol I was about to be like, what the heck is IT … aint know Quinn was a computer dude lol. TRB

    34. shaztah says:

Also, it only took Orton 7 years to get good and Brady Quinn 5 years and Brandon Lloyd 9 years to have a “breakout” year. You guys want to say Tebow isn’t going to make it well guess what he is still going to work hard and he will WIN.

    35. Drunkenbronc says:

3-14? That’s 17 games. There’s only 16 games in a season. And tebow started 3 of those. Credibility for your posts go out the window with statements like that

    36. 1nOnlyTRB says:

well sndvl, the 2nd spot hasn’t actually been said yet but i get the point, 2 or 3 don’t matter. Once orton didn’t get traded, he was the clear starter. Whether you are 2 or 3, you ain’t playing, except you have package like brad johnson (i think is his name) of the bills. But I got your point.

    37. Mikeyb1203 says:

Before everyone gets two high on the Broncos D I would like to point out that our run D still sucks and Klis is here to back me up.

Through two games that haven’t counted, the Broncos appear improved in almost every facet.

      Almost.

They are running the ball better, passing with greater precision, rushing the passer with more authority and seemingly improved on defense overall. But where the Broncos have seemed vulnerable — and there’s a decent chance this has been read before — is against the run.

The Broncos have allowed 114.5 yards rushing per game in their 1-1 preseason, substantial considering they have played from ahead in each of their games against Dallas and Buffalo. More telling: The Broncos have allowed 4.7 yards per rush, ranking 26th in the 32-team NFL.

And don’t blame the scrubs. Denver’s first-team defense was gouged for an 18-yard run by Felix Jones in the preseason opener against Dallas, then surrendered chunks of 20 yards to Fred Jackson and 14 yards to C.J. Spiller against Buffalo on Saturday night.

It hasn’t helped that two projected starters, defensive tackles Ty Warren and Marcus Thomas, are out because of injuries. But run defense goes beyond the front line.

“We’re getting there, but we still have some work to do,” Broncos coach John Fox said.

    38. sndvl says:

      Lol TRB..
I think it’s Brad Smith who runs their wildcat. Used to be with the Jets and Dolphins I believe.

    39. Mikeyb1203 says:

Oh and TRB it was Brad Smith that ran the wildcat for Buffalo the other night. Also I would like to say that the way the tempers for Buffalo were flairing between us and the Bills I have a feeling that someone will get hurt in Decembers game.

    40. millertime2 says:

txwinebergs WOW I know your mad but thats alittle extreme dont you think lol, wishing someone gets hurt. Dont forget for a team to get 59 points on your team im thinking that means that the defense was 32nd in the leaugel get a grip man were all bronco fans.

    41. RSH says:

Ty Warren cannot be placed on the PUP list. Any player who participated in training camp practices, regardless of the duration is ineligible for the PUP list. Warren will either have to take a roster spot or be placed on the season-ending IR.

    42. 1nOnlyTRB says:

lol thx for the corrections … at least I got the Brad part right. Guy never passed tho, which I hope will be the difference between us and them. TRB

You are right mikey. I forgot we will be playing them later. The moore hit will still be remembered. And it wasn’t only that hit, but other pushing and shoving. I think they were just getting frustrated cuz they owned the Bears the week before but couldn’t beat us.

I do my best to try to caution people about reading too much into preseason. Simms, Tom Brandstater, colts 0-4 going 16-0. Can’t base much off preseason. Just enjoy the games, and enjoy seeing hungry guys play that u will probably never see touch the field come reg season or that will be cut come sept 3rd. TRB

    43. denver0723 says:

txwinebergs, that is ridiculous to wish for a player to get hurt. I understand being mad that Tebow won’t get his shot this year, but to say some of the things you just said is out of line. Orton will do just fine. Tebow isn’t ready yet, and we will have to wait longer to see him be a full time starter.

And with Quinn on IR, it will make the TE decisions a little easier I suppose. Fells, Green, Rosario, and Green. I like the idea of 4 TE’s so I hope they all make it.

    44. 1nOnlyTRB says:

Yea man, wishing for a dude to break his back is pretty extreme…
True miller but in the game he did have 1 int a lost fumble and eat 4 sacks. The guy is a great game manager, his turnovers and bad plays however come at the worst time. When you need him the most. ergo not clutch/choke artist. I still remember his 3 INT (some returned for TDs i belive) game agaisnt the sorry Cardinals where we got blown out almost as bad as the raiders game. Like the DP said, we have 3 servicable QBs and no elite one. Thats the real picture of this supposed QQ. Im sure Orton will do ok, the quesiton however is, what will it accomplish in the long run. TRB

    45. millertime2 says:

Yah Mikeyb I know we need DTs bad, hopefully we can get some size when the roster cuts come. Man did you see how big the jets linemen are wow, thats what we need just big bodys in the middle they had a couple guys like 6 5 290 we just need to clog that middle up. But i know weve allow 141.5 yrds our first two games not good.

    46. brian_schneider says:

Bruton was a very good special teams player, so hopefully he’ll return.

Whoa, whoa, whoa, since when did we start wishing for our own players to have career ending injuries. That’s just plain mean and outright disturbing. First of all wanting to cause someone bodily harm that hasn’t caused you or your family harm is the stuff “Criminal Minds” tries to solve. 2nd of all just because your fan favorite isn’t starting, that’s just plain ignorant. I understand your love for a player but wishing bodily harm is pretty serious.

    47. MANDIEGO says:

It doesn’t matter who our QB is if our defense becomes that long forgotten “orange crush” of the past and we can dominate on the ground. Orton will win us championships if we can run for over 200 yards a game and consistently force 3 and out’s.

Unfortunately, we don’t have a dominate defense right now, and our run game thus far is suspect. So, we should be focusing on improving the run game and stopping the run.

    48. 1nOnlyTRB says:

lmao @ thats what criminal minds tries to solve lol

    49. millertime2 says:

      Brian that was funny stuff

    50. jcvic88 says:

Mikeyb1203 is still preseason football!!!! we are rank 18 in total defense, Pittsburgh 31, giants 29, packers 27 and eagles 24 is preseason!!! the bills run for 63 yards in the first half only 3 points, cowboys run for 46, 3 points, for me that’s a pretty good defense!!! i can live with that!! our starting defense only allowed 6 points in 2 games!!!!!
