Preseason Week 3: Tuesday Practice Blog

August 21st, 2012 - 1:08pm by Tyler Everett

For the second day in a row, the Broncos practiced in shorts, shells and helmets. Tuesday marked the first time since his signing that safety Jim Leonhard has participated, as Leonhard has been working his way back from a knee injury.

ROLL CALL

While Leonhard took part in practice, a number of players did not. Defensive end Jason Hunter (triceps), guard Chris Kuper (forearm), defensive tackle Kevin Vickerson (concussion), linebacker Keith Brooking (hamstring), wide receiver Andre Caldwell (rib), linebacker Nate Irving (rib), linebacker Mike Mohamed (hamstring) and wide receiver Tyler Grisham (knee).

Head Coach John Fox also announced that the team waived cornerback Joshua Moore, and Leonhard was officially taken off the PUP list. On Tuesday, cornerback Omar Bolden donned No. 31, Moore’s old number.

PLAYMAKERS

  • Wide receiver Eric Decker came up with a nice catch deep down the sideline, making the reception with cornerback Champ Bailey in coverage.
  • Bailey came up with an interception of a pass intended for wide receiver Greg Orton, tipping the ball in the air and catching it while running stride for stride with Orton deep down the sideline.
  • The longest pass of the day came on a flea flicker. After handing off the football and having it thrown back to him, quarterback Adam Weber found wide receiver Jason Hill open deep down the sideline for an easy touchdown.
  • Early in the practice, wide receiver Mark Dell came up with a nice catch deep down the middle of the field.
  • During team drills, cornerback Tracy Porter was able to get a hand on a pass intended for wide receiver Demaryius Thomas, but Thomas was still able to make the catch off the deflection.
  • Defensive tackle Sealver Siliga broke through the offensive line for a ‘sack’ during a team drill.

QUICK HITS

  • Former Broncos wide receivers Vance Johnson and Mark Jackson both attended Tuesday’s practice. Johnson and Jackson, along with Ricky Nattiel, made up the Broncos’ “Three Amigos,” a trio of pass catchers that stood out for Denver during the 1980s and 1990s. Johnson said he was impressed with what he saw watching Manning in person.

“(Owner) Pat Bowlen actually asked us to get suited up and come out here and get a tryout, but he asked us to sign a waiver first and I wasn’t willing to do that,” Johnson laughed.

  • For the second day in a row, quarterback Peyton Manning worked separately with rookie running back Ronnie Hillman, this time with Manning walking through end zone routes, slowly demonstrating how and when to cut. In addition to working with Hillman one-on-one, Manning got some extra work in with tight end Jacob Tamme and wide receiver Brandon Stokley.

What’s going on Bronco Country?? We are about to see what Peyton is all about when we meet up with SF. He is gonna get hit ,then hit and hit yet again. lmao This game will show if the starters are ready for Pit.

  2. gasperdn says:

If we were to somehow get MJD, do we keep McGahee???

  3. wolfedom says:

    How about a DJ, a Moreno,And throw in a Ball .

  4. wolfedom says:

    McGahee goes nowhere.

  5. DaddyBronc says:

It would be impressive if JE could figure a way to get MJD.

I apologize for being a troll AB – while stimulating the blog is a worthy goal in my mind – I have no intention of being a burden in the process. If you read all the posts you will notice that I didn’t start it but rather, have been taking some rather random shots concerning things that were never said by me. No worries – I’m still laughing. I never take myself or anyone else, too seriously.

While I agree with LBF that Manning may hit the groove and really start racking up the numbers, I think it is more likely that the Broncos start slow as several have suggested, and then the injuries start to mount and we again discover that we have a depth problem. As I go over the depth chart, it really is disconcerting.

I love the blog for the fact that you folks keep us all informed at the potential for trades etc.

  6. tlcat06 says:

I am sooooo Glad that Pat Bowlen is the owner of the Broncos. Kahn treats the best thing Jax. Has like this? Seriously? I hope he sits out the whole season.

  7. tlcat06 says:

McGahee goes NOWHERE! love that guy! And he is a solid back.

  8. DaddyBronc says:

I would be willing to include McG in a trade for MJD – but that would my very last choice.

McG and MJD working together wold really extend McG’s career. Might extend PM’s career as well. That would be some kind of negotiating. JE would be jumping into HOF caliber GE work if he could pull that one off. I’d bet even Bay would start to concede JE as a great GE in that circumstance.

Anybody seeing any tweets or indication of inside info on MJD?

  9. DaddyBronc says:

I’m really looking forward to seeing Hillman play.
Reserving judgement but so far he seems to be something special. I love the bottom paragraph of the article above.

PM is showing himself to be more of a team player than I have previously perceived him to be.

  10. tlcat06 says:

Vic Lombardi gives us a 5.84% chance, LOL

I do know that we are interested, but I don’t know if it has gone further than just interested.

But I also know that Kahn says he’s not trading him, but then they all said the same with Cutty and he was traded. It’ll be interesting to see what happens.

Oh, and Hillman grew up a Michael Vick Falcons fan… asked him what his fav. NFL team was growing up.

  11. DaddyBronc says:

To the issue of being delusional:

It’s probably just a personality driven issue, but I prefer to set my expectations low and when we are pleasantly surprised….it gives me a boost.

When I keep expectations reasonable (with all the “what ifs” firmly in place – stimulating the imagination) Then I don’t get depressed when we lose. I don’t feel the need to get mad at anyone. It is just the way it is.

  12. DaddyBronc says:

Is Lombardi saying who is the leading team in contention?

  13. tlcat06 says:

No, because right now Kahn is nixing a trade.

  14. tlcat06 says:

But there are plenty of people talking about the Broncos when they do talk about it.

  15. DaddyBronc says:

Kahn would be a fool to let MJD get away – MJD is his team.

  16. DaddyBronc says:

Maybe more fair to say that MJD is the Jax entire offense.

  17. tlcat06 says:

He’s not going to trade him because he’ll think he’s caving. But it’s a complete travesty to treat your franchise player the way that Kahn has treated MJD. JMHO

  18. DaddyBronc says:

Agreed and I think that the fact that MJD can’t be happy with his treatment is likely driving the issue.

Working for Bowlen and JE has got to be a strong draw for players. Not altogether an unlikely scenario – to see MJD come to play in Denver.

I’d love to hear that MJD gave JE a phone call.

  19. DaddyBronc says:

Is MJD under contract or coming up for renewal? I thought he was up for renewal.

  20. tlcat06 says:

It’ll be interesting to see what happens over the next few days. I know he’s 27 and asking for a lot of money, but he really has produced for years for Jax. And their team is going to miss him.

Not only Bowlen and JE, you gotta add Peyton into the mix now, DB. It’s really a great place to be, Denver.

They’re saying “No plan B” how about a “Plan MJD”? on twitter.

  21. tlcat06 says:

No, he is two years away from renewal and he’s asking for a raise from what I understand.

  22. tlcat06 says:

It’s not a stupid idea, but it would be pretty pricey. And we’re going to need to make sure that we have enough money to keep Clady next year too… so I don’t know. BUT next year we could possibly trade D.J. if he does well the second half of the season. Everything is a guessing game at this point, but I could see them staying up late tonight trying to make it happen. I do think we’re in trouble if McGahee were to get hurt, but would MJD be a brat in Denver if he was second up to Willis?

  23. DaddyBronc says:

Thanks Cat – I saw just a piece of that.

If we could get MJD – It would seriously increase Bronco chances for immediate success.

  24. tlcat06 says:

But then we’re greedy too. I don’t want to be greedy and I don’t want people calling us the dream team. I just want to win and I want Peyton to have a chance to win with a good running game. But they’re in talks about it now, seems like anyway.

  25. DaddyBronc says:

Would McG be a brat if he had to play 2nd behind MJD? I’d start MJD – he is more durable and his production goes up with the number of touches, whereas McG’s production is always down toward the end of the season.

Maybe PM would be willing to help with the price tag? Not that he should – but PM wants to win a couple more SB too.

  26. tlcat06 says:

Hey, who knows. Peyton Manning made them put a clause in his second year and beyond contracts that if he hurts his neck he gets nothing after the first season. John Elway didn’t agree with him, but Peyton wouldn’t sign unless they did it.

  27. DaddyBronc says:

It’s a good plan B! LOL not greedy. MJD would be helpful to our young QB’s as well.

  28. sndvl says:

So I finally got around to watching the game. Actually, just the first half. Since I obviously didn’t miss ANYTHING after watching Sea drive right down the field to open the 2nd half…

Turnovers or this game would have been at least 21 1st half points. Now is the time to have them. Get them outta the system now for all I care! Same with drops. Not nearly as bad as the turnovers. But can really inhibit momentum…suppose that goes without saying. But hey, get those outta the system now while we are at it.
As for the offense, once they start clicking- Watch Out. And in my opinion it’s not a matter of if, but when.
Special teams. Has hurt us the last few years. But 2 blocked punts and a forced fumble with recovery. (Which has me less worried about depth, because if these guys get the job done like this on ST, then the “Next Man Up Mantra” has credibility!!!
Now the good stuff. Defense Baby!!!! Wow. Let me rephrase that. WOW!
Never have I seen so many blatant holds. We should have had 6 sacks in that 1st half. Seriously. And for the 1st time in years, I am not the least bit worried about our D line. Wolfe was a fantastic choice. I am over the guy i wanted and am glad we got him instead.Chris Harris was ballin’, Mike Adams looks like a brilliant signing. Loved the way he threw the RB down on that one play. I watched it 3 times!
So that just leaves the LBs. Um. Weak spot? Tell me what I’m missing. Von Miller has the potential to dominate. Mays can still lay wood. And that’s another thing, I saw him involved a lot. JDR will be the perfect coach to bring out the most in that guy. I strongly believe he will outplay his contract!
Weak side? Hey, we can get the job done as a platoon. W2, KB, Irving, Trev… I just don’t see that being weak. Of course, this would be the time baylin tells me about the Orange Colored Glasses page…
I don’t care. I’m pumped for the season. Especially after that 1st half. Like I said. I didn’t bother watching the 2nd. But there really was no need to.
    PFM!!!!!!!!

    Broncos Country Strong 2012!

  29. DaddyBronc says:

PM = High Character, honorable. He just looks like he belongs in light blue. Can’t get over it! LOL

  30. sndvl says:

If it came down to MJD or Clady….

    Um. Clady.

  31. tlcat06 says:

LOL… and I think he looks like he’s always worn Orange and Blue. My little piece of heaven though.

Yes, he does have very high character. WHO KNOWS!

It’s very intriguing to say the least and I’ve argued with tons of people about it online tonight. LOL

  32. tlcat06 says:

I agree sndvl. I don’t know how the money works so I don’t even know if it’s in the cards at all. But this is what I wanted when I knew we had to trade Tebow. Didn’t get it then, crazy that it’s even being talked about now.

  33. DaddyBronc says:

sndvl – I agree with almost everything there especially about Mays – he got his share – was close on a lot of others and I only saw one miss. He is looking better in pass coverage already.

Still don’t see the dominance that I would like to see at this time of year.

  34. louisianabroncofan says:

wow the mjd rumors are swirling again i like it. ya know the bengals owner said he would never trade carson palmer no matter what because he didnt want to give in to a player and set a precedent. but when the right price was offered, he traded him immediately. so what we need to do is a little godfather stradegy and make him ‘an offer he cant refuse’. blow it up with 2 1st round picks and moreno. i know its alot but its an elite back at 27 years old and the value there is through the roof. if that offer was made i cant imagine not getting him that day. and hey daddybronc just know that you dont bother me a bit. youre just fine in my book man and we need your point of view on here so blog on brother man!!

  35. sndvl says:

Of course, in no way would I be opposed to Pocket Hercules joining us in Mile-High…

  36. DaddyBronc says:

    I’d take MJD over Clady

I’d cry and whine as Clady went – but with MJD – we’d be potent!!

  37. sndvl says:

Haha LBF, but I would have ended it “blog on father man”…

  38. DaddyBronc says:

Family is at grandparents. I’m the lonely guy for a bit.

  39. tlcat06 says:

LBF, I like the rumors too… it’s fun to talk about for our team even if it doesn’t happen.

I love Clady, but we offered him a nice 50,000,000 contract that he did not sign. I know he’s protection PFM and thinks he deserves more, but I was real bummed when he would take that, I think it made him the top 3rd paid RT. But I don’t know how money works in the NFL world.

  40. tlcat06 says:

    *protecting

  41. DaddyBronc says:

Been eating my own cooking – no wonder I’m a grouch.

  42. tlcat06 says:

    *wouldn’t
    *LT

I’m having issues over here DB, I blame YOU! LOL!

  43. DaddyBronc says:

GO ahead – I can take it. We still get what you are saying.

  44. louisianabroncofan says:

dang ya sndvl that woulda been a good one. and i like your assessment too but not on mays. i still dont like him. he looks lost at times and hits the wrong gap too much. he doesnt work through ‘trash’ very well and gets covered up on plays and is out of the play early. but he can get better and is doing some things better i agree. we’ll just have to see. and yes, i want clady over mjd but even better still, mjd AND clady. boom. superbowl.

  45. sndvl says:

    Peyton already makes us potent.
MJD would be a completely different adjective…high octane, Superbowl caliber, unstopable…….

  46. alaskanbronco06 says:

No way should we take MJD if it means we cant keep Clady. Its hard to find LTs like that often.

  47. DaddyBronc says:

Thanks LBF – good seeing you. Glad you have work. My garage door business is really struggling right now.

  48. tlcat06 says:

I do like what Mays said today about how he needs to get better. I think he knows he has issues, but I do believe if there is anyone who can help him fix those mistakes, it’d be JDR.

  49. DaddyBronc says:

AB – I would love to hear why you think Mays looked lost. He was around the ball the entire half. I’m willing to go back and watch again – but I watched the first half all the way through once keeping my eye on that one guy. He planted his share
