Preseason Week 3: Monday Practice Blog

August 22nd, 2011 - 2:29pm by Kenny Legan

The Denver Broncos returned to the practice field Monday morning for their first post-training camp practice and to prepare for their third preseason game against the Seattle Seahawks Saturday evening.

ROLL CALL

Ty Warren, Marcus Thomas, Demaryius Thomas, Richard Quinn, Stanley Daniels and linebacker Mario Haggan sat out practice. Haggan injured his shoulder Saturday. Safety David Bruton, who suffered a concussion Saturday, did not practice.

Daniel Fells (lower leg) and Brian Dawkins (ankle tendonitis) were “nicked” at practice, Head Coach John Fox said.

DEFENSIVE STANDOUTS
Cornerback Cassius Vaughn had the lone interception on the day during team drills, picking off a pass from Brady Quinn around midfield and returning it for a score.

Earlier in the day, the defensive backs also worked on one-on-one coverage and safety Rahim Moore made a jumping play to swat a deep ball away from receiver Greg Orton.

QUICK HITS

  • After the horn blew to signal the end of individual drills, Tebow ran a short route to the front cone of the end zone and just missed a one-handed grab thrown by Quinn. As Fox was walking over to the sideline he shouted, “Come on Tebow,” and proceeded to give him a smile and fist bump.
  • Running back C.J. Gable had a nice scamper that included a quick juke move in the secondary to which drew Oohs, Aahs and hollers from the offensive sideline.
  • Receiver Britt Davis reached over the head of Vaughn to haul in a nice catch, and also drew praise from Wide Receivers Coach Tyke Tolbert after making a block during a running play.
  • Receiver Brandon Lloyd worked with kicker Matt Prater and punter Britton Colquitt on punting on the side field during special teams sessions. Lloyd actually got a 50-yard punt to stop on the 1-yard line.
  • Also during the last special teams sessions, running back Willis McGahee did sprints on the side.

      Good Morning People!!!

So, it seems as though the whole TT debate will not subside……….and will continue to be a hot topic of discussion as long as he’s here. I’ll give him one thing, he certainly knows how to garner attention! lol

What I get a kick out of is the Tebowmaniacs demanded he be traded so he’ll get to play somewhere else where they’ll give him a chance. May I ask what’s wrong with a rookie riding the pine for a year or so and learning along the way? A starting QB job is earned, not just handed over.

As mentioned by a few people before, Tom Brady played behind Bledsoe, Rodgers had to endure whatching old fart Favre before he could get his chance, Rivers behind Breese, Big Ben was forced into action, against the steelers actual plan for him…………

What I’m saying is that as great as TT might be, along with his potential upside, sometimes bigtime college QBs are just not ready to make that jump into the pros. It’s not a knock against the guy………it’s just the way it is.

Tebow might still be the future in Denver………and I’m fine with that. But I don’t need to see the future right now. Right now, I need to see the best players on our roster out on the field and competing for wins.

    2. killerkod says:

And with everyone saying this regime won’t give the kid a chance…….

From what I remember, McD drafted him……….and how many snaps did he actually see? He only got to play after Orton was hurt and McD was gone………..I highly doubt if that would’ve changed if McD was still here(heaven forbid!) lol It was like he drafted him, woke up the next day with a wicked hangover from being completely inebriated, looked over at TT in the bed next to him and said what the f&%k did I just do? He then proceeded to pretty much ignore him the rest of the year and hoped he would just go away. LOL

    3. baylinorcrush says:

Same here, totally getting headaches over the Tebow thing no one seem to be able to let go even so Fox has now named Orton the starter for regular season, it’s like so yesterday’s news now I almost feel as staying away until the bloggers finally get it, we are moving on with Orton for now, officialy no more QQ for the present which is all that matters, history is for the ones who live in the past and the future for the ones who can never be happy with the present, FORGET IT, the moment is now and Tebow isn’t it, Orton is, done deal, for the present, enjoy the present, live the present.

And Quinn was send to IR because of an injury that turned out to be worse than they’d hoped, not receiving over blocking preferences, too weird that someone would be happy to make their point over someone’s injury, oh well…

This blog has degraded over the last couple of days I’ll tell you that, just after we all got to see that Tebow played after Quinn, I can only hope the attitude around here now isn’t a sign of the season to come because it would then be brutally disgusting in Bronco Country. I’m kind of ashamed of some fans right now, GO BRONCOS!

    4. HomeTeam007 says:

      Go Broncos!!

Seriously lots of bright spots on our defense right now. Finally a first round pick that is starting to play up to the expectations. And great flashes of potential from the later round rookies. Nice to see Cassius V. stepping up. He has been working hard and it is showing.

    5. killerkod says:

Seems as though some are predicting a 10+ win season?!?!?!?

Is that orange kool-aid back in circulation? LOL

    6. baylinorcrush says:

Now just take a big breath and pay close attention to what McGahee says:

There is making yourself at home. Then there is Willis McGahee really making himself at home.

“It’s a great fit. I just love it here,” McGahee said as he squinted into the Colorado sun Monday. “Believe it or not, I don’t want to go nowhere else. Whenever I decide to end it, I’d like to end it here.”

That is what your Broncos have become, a place where players love to play, instead of one where they hated to play under McD, take that McGahee quote with you Bronco fans and Tebow fans alike to remind yourselves to be happy with what you got, just like the players are! That’s where it all starts, happiness between the players, happiness between the fans, this dissenssion b.s. to no end has never served any organization well. Time to grow up?

    7. baylinorcrush says:

And this is Krieger in a single line saying exactly what I attempted to say in the last two posts about the Tebow factor:

It’s awkward. It’s divisive. And there’s no getting around it: For the Broncos, it’s a problem.

      Take that and digest it!

    8. killerkod says:

Well, I’m leaving today to head out to Vancouver, BC for my best friend’s wedding, which is the same night as the Seattle game. Got it PVR’d and will watch it when I get back on Monday. I’m sure there will be a lot to comment on.

Won’t be online much at all until then, so take it easy my fellow Bronco Buddies and I’ll be catching up with you all next week.

      GO BRONCOS!!!

    9. baylinorcrush says:

      Enjoy!

    10. millertime2 says:

Im glad that people are starting to come to terms with Orton starting. Now I think everyone can settle in and start enjoying our revampt D that we have go broncos

    11. teddy502 says:

      we r back

    12. teddy502 says:

best our d has looked in years

    13. O&BinCostaRica says:

We are in many ways, particularly players WANTING to be here, to the days before McD. Like Bay said, let’s enjoy the present, there is nothing better on TV, EVER, than Bronco Football!

      GO BRONCOS!

    14. millertime2 says:

I cant remember being this excited to watch a bronco game, its been yrs since ive felt this its great. Cant wait till the first game cant stand the raiders, Just think positive we will win some games no doubt. Im thinking at least 3-0 to start season.

    15. stevecan2 says:

This first read issue… I am extremely curious why it has failed so many people attention that our QB1 is not exactly known for going to his second and even third read with very much success and is actually something that is spoken of quite often by sports analysts. Red Zone inefficiency and a poor 3rd down conversion rate are a direct result of failure to go to the second and third reads, fast…

    16. stevecan2 says:

Bay, Heltor Skeltor? yes, and he will get crushed and hurt or hurt someone else pulling what he did against Dallas. He will learn to take that killer instinct and be productive with it( or at least he had better sooner than later). But seeing that killer instinct directed in the correct way is a hole heap better than throwing it away or taking the sack.

    17. BroncosRmyReligion says:

With Orton named the starter hopefully Quinn and Tebow will get to start the next 2 games and see what they can do with the 1st offense since the would have to fill in with the 1st offense.
GM 3 Quinn 1st half,Tebow 3rd quarter, Weber 4th and switch it for the last game.

    18. royalbroncofan1 says:

Looks like the Seahawsks have a little QQ of their own as Whitehurst outplayed Jackson vs Chargers and Vikings. Vikings were coming after Jackson real hard last weekend. Of course Whitehurst was going against the two’s. The fans seem to like Whitehurst.

    19. Bro says:

BroncosRmyReligion, Orton should play three quarters this week. The third preseason game always has the longest playing time for starters. You will have to wait till week four to see more quinn and tebow ha. Excited for this weeks game! GO BRONCOS!

    20. CurtOU says:

Can you even imagine what would have happened if Tebow would have got hurt this offseason? Fox would have given Orton the nod and Tebownation would be all over Orton all year saying that the only reason he is playing is because Timmy got hurt. Every bad throw would be ridiculed, every slide dissected. As a Bronco fan, I think this is the best outcome we could have hoped for this offseason.

Expect big years from Champ, Royal, and Prater.

      Curt

    21. seweatherman1 says:

Man, ain’t this some nice weather we are having! The east coast is waiting to see what Irene is going to do.

    22. brian_schneider says:

Well I’m finally happy Fox made an actual public decision on the whole starting QB thing. Now we can get down to business and work on making this team better.

I don’t think you can see this in the photo above but Dawkins is actually pushing the earth down and not really doing push-ups LOL!

    23. CurtOU says:

Still a whole week until you have to be down to 80 players. And that isn’t even exciting because the cuts will all be college free agents that really didn’t have a chance. So excited that football is here, but these days leading up to it are excruciating.

      Curt

    24. stevecan2 says:

Orton being named the starter. In a Gomer Pyle tone. suprise suprise suprise… He deserves it, it was always his position to lose and we all (regardless of who we want in our hearts) knew it. He is an starting NFL QB.

    25. sndvl says:

I’ll add to your list Curt.

Clady, Moreno and comeback player of the year Elvis Dumervil. (With Defensive Rookie of the Year Von Miller)

    26. sndvl says:

And if it had not been for the setback to Marcus Thomas, he was my candidate for breakout player of the year!

    27. danso says:

I enjoyed attending the game Saturday against Buffalo. I have new season tickets on the Club level(only season tickets I’ve ever owned to anything) and I swear I died and went to heaven. I think we have a lot of good things to look forward to this year. Having three good quarterbacks to choose from should be a blessing not a problem, much improved offensive line(2 rookies now second year, Clady healthy, a good new rookie) an improved running game, some good tight ends, great wide receivers and a respected coach and front office-what more can we ask for? This offense will be good if they stay healthy. Defense is much improved over last year. Find some more help on the d line and add some depth in several positions and we will have a very competitive team, in my humble opinion. The biggest negative is we have a damn tough schedule but this should be a year that will make Bronco fans proud again!!!

    28. CurtOU says:

Breakout player could be Decker if he can run that slot position like Stokley use to. Defensive candidate for me will be Joe Mays. He’ll be a big help with the run this year.

      Curt

    29. WieminCA says:

Yesterday, playing softball, I went back for a fly ball, my “spikes” caught in the tall grass (field maintenance is terrible), I flew backward, hit my butt, and then my head snapped back hard into the ground … “mile” concussion … groggy all day – dizzy off and on – some nausea … I know I’ll play again, but not right away … made me wonder what the hell these football players go through, and how they have the desire to get back to it … $$$, pride, and the DESIRE they all must have, I guess … but it sure is a wakeup call … at the age of 73, no less … have any of you people experienced this?? … and do you ever forget it?? …

    30. bronctario says:

Hey, first time poster, long time reader. But I have been so upset with the chatter from ‘broncos fans’ who appear to be cheering for only one player.
Bay, you’ve nailed it. Too much dissention from fans… wishing injuries to starters so that back ups will play??!! That is gross and you end up showing your true colors, and they definitely aren’t orange and blue. WE finally have some talent focused on both sides of the ball and I really believe we can be surprisingly competitive with personnel listed on the depth chart IN THAT ORDER. Give our young guys time to learn from established players, regardless of how you feel about them personally. It certainly won’t hurt their progression.

    31. brian_schneider says:

WieminCA: You’re 73 years old? Man I just hope to be able to make it to the bathroom on time when I’m that old LOL!

    32. royalbroncofan1 says:

Like how you worded that danso…”should be a blessing, not a problem”.
Nice write up of where we’re at and what’s needed.
Enjoy your club level seats !!! :-)

    33. stevecan2 says:

Sweet deal. Looks like this Tebow… err I mean Bronco fan is no longer a conditioning coach. Moving on up to assistant. I never thought I would need my personal life to distract me from entertainment.

Catch yall next week, when i am fired up again and distracted long enough from my new position. Baseball, so much less drama than the NFL.

    34. danso says:

      Thanks royal

    35. Broncfalls says:

      LMFAO @ Brian_Schneider LOL!

On a side note, can you imagine what it would be like to be a Raider fan? My lord, I swear God only put them on this planet for me to show my kids what not to be!

      GO GET EM’ BOYS!

    36. denver0723 says:

Love that quote from McGahee, bay. I think the Tebow stuff will calm down. I was mad too, but I got over it the next day. Let Tebow learn. I was super pumped when Orton came over from Chicago, and the dude isn’t that bad at all. Perhaps with this new fired up defense and the postive attitude in Broncos country we will be alright. We will definitely be more competitive, and I think our run game is gonna be exciting. Moreno looks way better, and McGahee is perfect in the redzone. Lloyd is gonna be just as good, and Royal and Decker are gonna be impact players for us. Von Miller is a stud and it finally looks like we got it right in the first round of the draft. Our TE’s actually seem threatning and relevant unlike in years past. Bunkley could emerge and be huge for us and he is young. I still have high hopes for him as our DT. Doom is back and he is back in a big way. Lots of things to look forward to. And lots of more exciting things to focus on rather than the QQ which does not exist anymore. Let’s get it done Orton, Lloyd, Moreno, TE’s, OL, and Defense! AND LET’S GO BRONCOS!

    37. strandoftds says:

I’m not all that concerned about Tebow starting at the time being. I believe that Tim will get his shot as a starting QB for our Denver Broncos whether it`s sometime this year or next year. What ERKS ME is when analysts, comentators, and bloggers say Tebow needs to be traded or cut. Some are Tebow haters, some are Gator fans who want him to start from day one. As for me I can wait, he`ll get his shot as a Bronco. Tim`s not going to any other team and he`s being groomed and just isn`t ready. IT IS WHAT IT IS!! But that doesn`t mean to trade him or cut him because he`s not ready. Give me a freaken break.

    38. 1nOnlyTRB says:

      Congrats on the position stevecan2.

Im not excited enough about the team to be predicting 10 wins perse … preseason lies often, u can sweep in preseason and lose badly in reg season or like the colts, lose all preseason games and go 16 – 0. Ill reserve my true evaluation after the first season game when people are in it to win it. Plus the level of competition we have played in preseason is pretty low, altho since its preseason it doesn’t matter. So I cannot really gauge based on competition but I can gauge based on what I see different in us from last year. Which is a better running game that can get better, and a defense that plays with aggression, pride and a desire to be a deciding factor in a game. That wasn’t so last year.

      Later days, TRB–

    39. strandoftds says:

Since Orton is starting I`m behind him and wanting Kyle to succeed. I do want to win our division starting today. Kyle looks promising as our starting QB and especially since our running game is looking good. Thats all I ask is for our QB to be put in a position to succeed and our O-line is there along with our running game. WE ARE GOING IN A GOOD DIRECTION. Kyle, I`m behind you and support you! KICK SOME MAJOR ARSE ORTON!!!!

    40. 1nOnlyTRB says:

Now da Larry Fitz deal is gonna be the standard for WRs and others who think they are as valuable as him. And people blame the players instead of the owners that keep increasing the ceiling. Takes 2 to tango

    41. BeastFromEast92 says:

strand, remember Elway couldn’t win the big one until we got a descent Defense and a great running game!

    42. eddiecheddar says:

Well KO, now that you’ve won over the locker room and the coaching staff, it’s time to win a ring and win over the fans. Right?

    43. eddiecheddar says:

We could start by completely manhandling joakland faders week 1 at SPORTS AUTHORITY FIELD!

    44. txwinebergs says:

The issue I have with Orton is he is a quitter. He sucked last year, he damn well quit on our team. Honestly, I want Tebow to get in and do good or learn as he is doing great. Look at Dalton, Bradford, Newton, all them are taking over teams but for some reason only Tebow is getting hell from the media. Seriously, media ruined any chances Tebow had or will have with this team and the decision to go with a Quitter like Orton will only prove that the team is not going in the right direction. I think Fox will be out as well.

Guess whats next… The likes of Bailey, Royles, LLoyd and all other starts will be out the door, either released or traded.. Orton is like the sisters on Cinderella and Tebow is the one in the cellar. If you give Tebow the right chance and full opportunity he will make it big in the league and he should do it with another team since the blinders are praising a quitter as the starter..

    45. mike1730256 says:

i think it would be awesome if tebow maybe played another position for us he is one of those guys that im sure his dream is to be a starting NFL QB but if that cant happen im sure he will still accept playing in the NFL and if that means playing another position so be it. tebow is a guy that any coach would tell u they would want on there team one way or another because all coaches love players that just wanna play and will do anything to help the team win. Tim Tebow can do for us like Brad Smith did for the jets and now the bills, but even more tebow could be a running back, tight end, or even maybe a receiver
