Preseason Week 3: Monday Practice Blog

August 20th, 2012 - 1:28pm by Tyler Everett

The Broncos took the field for their first post-training camp practice Monday at 11:10 a.m. In its first practice since Saturday night’s 30-10 loss to Seattle, the team practiced in shorts, jerseys, shells and helmets.

ROLL CALL

Defensive end Jason Hunter (triceps), guard Chris Kuper (forearm), defensive tackle Kevin Vickerson (concussion), safety Jim Leonhard (knee), linebacker Keith Brooking (hamstring), wide receiver Andre Caldwell (ribcage), linebacker Nate Irving (ribcage), linebacker Mike Mohamed (hamstring) and cornerback Joshua Moore (hamstring) did not participate in Monday’s practice.

Four players notably made their return to practice — running back Ronnie Hillman, safety Quinton Carter, cornerback Tracy Porter and linebacker Danny Trevathan.

PLAYMAKERS

  • During a red-zone drill, cornerback Tony Carter intercepted quarterback Adam Weber near the pylon. Carter caught the ball in stride after making a strong break on the football, and looked to have been on his way to a big run-back if the play was live.
  • Another interception was recorded by cornerback Chris Harris, who stepped in front of a pass by Brock Osweiler to make the pick.
  • Early in practice, wide receiver Jason Hill rose up high to make a leaping reception in the middle of the field.
  • On one play during red-zone work, quarterback Peyton Manning dropped back and had several players standing between him and running back Knowshon Moreno on a designed screen play. But Manning patiently waited, and then managed to sidearm a pass through traffic to Moreno.
  • Wide receiver Greg Orton came up with a touchdown reception on a tipped pass thrown by Weber.

QUICK HITS

  • During a special teams drill, Hillman and Manning worked on their chemistry on passing plays.
  • Before moving to team drills, the defense focused on turnovers to warm up. Each position group worked on various aspects of takeaways, including the tip drill, where one player slaps a pass into the air, with the player behind picking off the deflection. The defensive linemen practiced diving on fumbles and covering the football the proper way. The linebackers did a drill featuring one player tipping a ball headed out of bounds back into the field of play, with another backer focusing on scooping up the bouncing or rolling pigskin.
  • Defensive Coordinator Jack Del Rio got involved with the defensive backs during a walkthrough, standing in as a linebacker and re-routing receivers coming over the middle to help his players understand the defensive scheme and each defender’s specific role.

Gray, you rock! Thanks for being so helpful!!

Yes… it does sound like a song title, or we’re just obsessed with writing Bronco songs!!

  2. OrangeTsunami says:

I love me some Denver Broncos!!!

  3. tlcat06 says:

    Nice pictures!

  4. DenverCB says:

Cat, to answer your previous question as to who we are going to tie with, im not too sure but wouldnt it be rediculous if it were the Patriots!!

  5. strandoftds82 says:

Please no more ties to the Pats. LOL

  6. OrangeTsunami says:

Just heard an interview with Warren Sapp. When asked who his most hated player is, he said Phillip Rivers. He said there was just a way about Rivers, like he thought he was better than everyone else, “like he walked around with his nose in the air.” LOL

  7. tlcat06 says:

DenverCB… I’m good with that. It’d mess up everyone’s postseason predicitions too! LOL! I like it… I’d rather we win of course, but it’s be awesome if it was a tie.

Vickerson, Caldwell, and Irvin hurt us the most for not being on the field practicing. We need those 3 badly. As for Brooking and Leonhard not participating yet, in due time. Those 2 players are going to be valuable to our team. They`ll get there.

  9. strandoftds82 says:

    Both Cat. LOL

  10. tlcat06 says:

I was bummed about Caldwell… To be honest I was irked that he was still in the game.

  11. strandoftds82 says:

At least his ribs aren`t broken. Caldwell would be out awhile.

  12. tlcat06 says:

He has a kidney bruise right?

  13. strandoftds82 says:

I didn`t hear that. Bruised ribs though.

  14. strandoftds82 says:

Caldwell and Irvin should be day to day is my guess.

  15. tlcat06 says:

Well I heard from somewhere that it was a bruised kidney. I hope not… OUCH!

  16. gasperdn says:

Hopefully Hillman will stay healthy. it was nice to hear Peyton wanting to get some extra reps with him to work on their chemistry!

  17. gasperdn says:

I wanna see him(Hillman) run some big plays against the 9ers on Sunday!

  18. tlcat06 says:

I am absolutely thrilled that we get to play the 49ers. It’s going to test us on all cylinders.

  19. HAYNBOI96743 says:

Save Hillman for the opener against PITT, no point in pulling that hammy in a preseason game against the 9ers…

  20. gasperdn says:

HAYN, in some respects I agree, but I think you got to put him into a somewhat live NFL game so he can adjust to the speed of that game as opposed to college games. I’m not saying that you put him out there if he is injured, but if he is good to go, I think you gotta give him the reps.

  21. strandoftds82 says:

Pulled hammies can linger for months if you keep re-aggravating it. maybe even a whole football season. You got to let it heal completely.

  22. OrangeTsunami says:

Anyone else notice that Dreessen had a chance to catch that Manning throw before it was picked off? It would have had to have been a great catch, but IMO he definitely could have put a hand on it to prevent the INT.

  23. tlcat06 says:

I didn’t OT. I will go back and rewatch it!!!

    New Blog!

  24. OrangeTsunami says:

Watch it in slow motion cat. Dreessen lets up, and lowers his arm as if he senses the pressure. Wasn’t a great pass, but it wasn’t as bad as I originally thought, and I think Dreessen could have made a play.

  25. gasperdn says:

I was thinking the same thing OT!
