Prater-Beadles Not Quite Montana-Rice

September 30th, 2012 - 8:28pm by Gray Caldwell

Leading 10-3 late in the second quarter, the Broncos found themselves facing a fourth-and-1 at the Oakland 36-yard line.

Having already converted a fourth-down play earlier in the game, the Broncos were left with trotting the offense back out on the field or bringing in kicker Matt Prater to attempt a 54-yard field goal.

Denver went with option C.

Punter Britton Colquitt took the snap as normal before tossing the ball to Prater, who dropped back as a quarterback.

The kicker rolled out and lofted a high pass down the sideline toward guard Zane Beadles, who was tripped up as the ball fell incomplete. The turnover on downs gave Oakland the ball, and the Raiders used the field position to drive down for a field goal just before halftime.

“It was a little disappointing,” Head Coach John Fox said. “I didn’t see exactly what happened. We got the look that we were looking for and obviously it wasn’t very well executed. It was really supposed to be designed more of as a run than a pass.”

Prater acknowledged that his initial read was to run for the first down, but he saw a Raiders safety headed his way, and he didn’t feel that he could outrun him.

After the 37-6 win — the largest margin of victory for the Broncos against the Raiders in 50 years — it was a little easier to joke about the unsuccessful fake field goal.

“I just kind of told them to maybe give ‘Manning-to-Stokley’ a chance, maybe before ‘Prater-to-Beadles,’” quarterback Peyton Manning joked. “It’s one of the all-time great combinations, right? ‘(Jim) Kelly-(Andre) Reed,’ ‘(Joe) Montana-(Jerry) Rice,’ ‘Prater-Beadles,’ you know?”

Prater was quick to point out that he’s undefeated as an “all-time quarterback” in a flag football league back home, so he was disappointed with his throw. Especially with the way Beadles was burning his way downfield.

“He was flying down the field — I thought it was (tight end Jacob) Tamme,” Prater laughed. “I tried to give him a 50-50 ball. Might have overthrown him a little bit. Had a little extra adrenaline – I’m not used to having the ball in my hands. It was fun, I’m glad we did it, just wish we would have executed it better.”

Whether Prater gets a chance to make up for his throw is up to his head coach.

“We probably won’t see that one again for a while,” Fox said.

All the bloggers must be out celegrating this great win against the Raiders. I was great putting a whopping on them on our home field, we’ve been waiting a long time for this one. Great game for us gans and the organization! Next up, another team we owe a stomping , the Patriots! Go Broncos!

This was the weirdest play of the game besides DMT fumbling, but I was happy they were aggressive and went for it. They need to practice it more.

LOVE Zane though, love love love that he was in on it! Too funny!

    GO BRONCOS! I’m loving this.

    We’ll get the next fake!

  4. tlcat06 says:

Since 2007 people, 2007!!! Yeah! Back to dominating at home! Let’s do this guys!!!

  5. strandoftds82 says:

Evening Cat, get a load of this. Our Punter Culquit didn’t have a single punt in this game. Easy money for him. LOL

  6. strandoftds82 says:

Has anyone heard of whats going on with J.D. Walton? I hope it’s not season ending.

  7. tlcat06 says:

Yes, Strand it is. He has a broken ankle.

  8. strandoftds82 says:

Thank God we have Koppen! WOW!!

  9. strandoftds82 says:

So Walton’s year has ended it sounds like.

  10. strandoftds82 says:

We need a back up Center to fill a roster spot then.

  11. tlcat06 says:

I think we have one. Not sure though!!

  12. sndvl says:

Tough break for JD. I know he put in a lot of work. Speedy recovery brother.

As for the DMT fumble, that’s just one of those football follies.

It was awesome to see the D step up the way they did in that 2nd half.
Best thing about this W? It shut up all those raider fans. They were REAL quiet. And I didn’t get a text from my dad after the game for the 1st time since 07… Lol

  13. strandoftds82 says:

We only have Koppen at Center now. We placed rookie Phillip Blake Center on IR a few weeks ago.

  14. tlcat06 says:

We need to get rid of Knowshon and get a pint returner, pleeeease!

  15. tlcat06 says:

    *PUNT LOL

  16. tlcat06 says:

Sndvl, did you text your dad? If so, what did you say?

Oh, wellim sure well find someone to back up Koppen then!

  17. strandoftds82 says:

I said all week that the faiders wouldn’t get a single TD and, well, I called it. Yee Hah!!

  18. strandoftds82 says:

Bar Tender, give me a pint!! LOL

  19. sndvl says:

The Koppen signing is huge now. Isn’t Blake a G/C too?

I know it’s going to be tough to go into NE and come out with a W, but it would be oh so sweet to stick it to them and their OC… If our D can play like they did today, I like our chances!!!

  20. strandoftds82 says:

Sndvl, he is and was also place on IR awhile back.

  21. strandoftds82 says:

The Bills had 6 turn-overs. They shot themselves in the foot so to speak.

  22. tlcat06 says:

Close to my score prediction. I predicted 35-10

  23. strandoftds82 says:

Nice one Cat. I predicted 41-9

  24. sndvl says:

I didn’t know Blake was IR. Just looked at the roster and it looks like CJ Davis is listed as a Center.

Haha TIcat- “I know it wasn’t 59, but the 2nd largest margin was sweet”… He hasn’t responded back :)

  25. strandoftds82 says:

Cool. CJ Davis isn’t a bad back up. I feel better now.

  26. tlcat06 says:

It was the largest margin we’ve won by isn’t it?

  27. tlcat06 says:

Since some ridiculous time in 1970

  28. strandoftds82 says:

We have 6 players on IR not including Walton yet, and it’s only week 4. So we get Virgil Green back from suspension this next game. Green can start practicing.

  29. strandoftds82 says:

We beat the faiders into submission. LOL

  30. tlcat06 says:

BUT we get Kupe back this week!!! for like real. I think he can play on Sunday!!

  31. strandoftds82 says:

If we can stay away from turning the ball over in N.E. we have a shot, but this is a very tough game for us. We have to play a sound game in all three phases. I know we can run against them. We proved that last year when McGahee ran all over them in the regular season game.

  32. strandoftds82 says:

That’s the word. Kuper opens big holes for our running game. There’s hope!

  33. strandoftds82 says:

Well, I’m tired. Off to bed for me. Talk to ya tomorrow Cat.

  34. tlcat06 says:

Yes. Plus, I’m sure Manning can’t wait to play this game. The Raiders rivalry is nothing compared to his rivalry with Brady. The two have mad respect for each other we just need to get up early and get some turnovers. I was bummed that we didn’t get any turnovers today.

  35. tlcat06 says:

Me too buddy, me too. Wearing my Manning jersey to school tomorrow! I’m a rebel!!!

  36. 3rdGeneration says:

That fake was ugly. I’m all for going for it on 4th down and think it’s underutilized in the league, but that was not the way to do it. With that said, I would have kicked in that scenario to make it a two possession game. I loved the 4th down conversion earlier in the game.

  37. 3rdGeneration says:

Is Walton’s injury official yet? I haven’t heard. I know that when seeing the reply his ankle looked like it broke or dislocated. It wasn’t pretty. What a stroke of luck that we picked up Koppen when we did. NE will be a tough match up at home. It’ll help us that Hernandez is out. We really struggled last year with their two tight end set. I think its one of the reasons we went out and got Tamme and Dreessen. If you can’t beat’em, join’em.

  38. 3rdGeneration says:

    *replay

  39. DBroncos090 says:

Yeah jd is out with a broken ankle, sucks so bad.. :/

Google it, it’s in the recent news.

I’m anxious for next week vs. NE, hopefully with a better team this year we can take them down!

NE put up monster points in the second half to the bills, but the bills did have 6 turnovers… hard to win win that happens. If them darn Bills would have kept it together they might have ridden that 21-7 lead to beat NE… wouldn’t that have been sweet.

  40. alex4serg says:

Man that was awesome. Total shelacking. Broncos just manhandled em in all three phases.’ Run dmc was walk dmc with 13 carries for 34 yards. McG averaged 5.9 a touch. And remind me. When the last time we blocked a punt was.
    F
And the backup C didn’t miss a beat. If anything he played better. Looked like a playoff team today.

  41. killerkod says:

A victory like that just makes my Monday mornings so enjoyable!

Like you said alex, we kicked their butts in all three phases of the game. And we had double their TOP. I loved how our drives were methodical and ate up the clock. Quick strikes are nice, but when you can wear down the other team with first down after first down and 3rd down conversions, your chances of winning are huge……..and that’s just what we did.

DMT didn’t seem to let that fumble phase him…….as he came back with some more grabs…….and that block that sprung Deck to the TD was sweet. I bet he never lets that kind of fumble happen again………..Def just a football follie.

Also I want to give props to Ramirez………he had a solid game after committing some bad penalties the week before.

Huge test coming up for us next week………and it won’t be easy to head into San Diego either….but both games are def winnable. Yeah, the Pats had a huge 2nd half……….but the Bills turned the ball over like 4 times. And there’s no way the pats run for over 200 yards on our D. If we can hold Run DMC to 34 yards, we can stop anybody.

    GO BRONCOS!!!

  42. tlcat06 says:

Kod… stooping McFadden was amazing. I love our run defense!!!!!!

  43. killerkod says:

Yup, I thought for sure we’d contain him somewhat, but not shut him out like we did. That was IMPRESSIVE stuff. Seems as though Von has stepped up his game in run D as well. His game is evolving and that’s just what he needs to keep doing.

I was disappointed the Chiefs couldn’t beat the Chargers…….would’ve made for a three way tie for first in the west. But oh well…..the Chiefs just suck all around. I hope the Saints are able to take care of them next week……..we need them to lose and then set up a division leading game in San Diego.

But first we need to take care of business against the Patsies…………and they are far from indestructible. It’s gonna be a barn burner and one that will prob grab the biggest national and international audience this year.

  44. tlcat06 says:

Yes except it is not prime time. Too bad it isn’t. But I’m glad we don’t have three prime time games in a row. I don’t think anyone can complain about our quarterback for a week!!!!!

  45. tlcat06 says:

I was just most /impressed with how they played without Mays. You could tell they were trying to figure it out the first qtr and then they got it and wow….

  46. tlcat06 says:

    And! Tracy played much better!!!

  47. tlcat06 says:

Kod I think not having Hernandez will help us and we have a ton of film of McDaniels so I think JDR can watch the Miami game and Ravens game to see how to tame Brady.

  48. OrangeTsunami says:

Hey y’all. Kod, I agree about those long drives, and TOP. If we keep that up, I think we will be a tough match-up for anyone. It looked liked Manning was very quick to check down to the underneath routes, which IMO was his issue in the last few weeks, trying to force the long throw. We have great blocking WR’s, and even a quick OL that can get downfield (minus Koppen), we need to use those short passes and screens more and more, which will open up the long pass.

  49. killerkod says:

I agree cat………and you know they’re gonna have one helluva week’s practice coming up. They were very prepared for this game and I won’t expect anything less about the next one. You can really tell that both sides of the ball are gelling.

Morning OT! Did the Tebow chants wake you up this morning? LMAO

One thing I was disappointed in yesterday was the return game……..Leonard is useless.
