Porter: ‘A Good Situation’

March 23rd, 2012 - 9:35am by Stuart Zaas

One day after signing with the Broncos, cornerback Tracy Porter participated in a conference call with the local media. He credited the team’s coaching staff and championship aspirations as a major factors into his decision to sign with Denver.

“After going around visiting teams, I felt like first and foremost Denver put me in a good situation – coming in and being able to help the team win,” Porter said. “From the start, I really enjoyed the coaching staff, spending time with those guys.”

Porter brings Super Bowl experience to the team’s roster, having been a part of the Saints’ Super Bowl XLIV victory over the Colts. In that game, Porter made a name for himself in sealing the game for New Orleans after returning an interception 74 yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter. That play stopped a potential game-tying drive for the Colts and instead gave the Saints a 31-17 lead with 3:12 left in the game.

“(That play) definitely put a bigger spotlight on me and my career because that’s the stage that everybody tries to get to,” Porter said. “That’s the stage that everyone in the world is basically watching that game. If you make a big play in the game, everybody is going to want to know who that guy is that made the play. It definitely helped lift my career and helped put a spotlight on me.”

The quarterback on the other end of that pick-six was Porter’s new teammate, Peyton Manning. While Porter said he did run into Manning and had a brief conversation with the new Broncos quarterback, the big play did not come up.

But he says it will eventually.

“No, we didn’t talk about that,” he said, laughing. “I’m sure it’ll eventually come up during training camp, OTAs or what not. But that first visit, we just wanted to find out where each other’s focus was as far as helping this club win.”

Once on opposite sidelines for a Super Bowl, the pair plans to chase their second rings this season.

Porter, who signed with Denver after playing the first four years of his career in New Orleans, hopes to return to the city next February for another game in the Superdome, which will host Super Bowl XLVI.

“I’m looking to begin my career here with the Denver Broncos and help this club get back to New Orleans so we can win a championship,” Porter said.

He’s looking forward to joining forces with Champ Bailey in the Broncos’ secondary and says he has a lot to learn from the 11-time Pro Bowler.

“I thought about that when I got down here, what it would be like playing with Champ,” Porter said. “He’s a guy that’s been in the league for quite a while, so that’s definitely somebody that I want to learn from and further my game under. He will be a great mentor for me. I’m looking forward to it. The coaches say he’s a great guy and I’ve heard nothing but great things about him.”

With his eyes on a championship, Porter says he’ll do whatever it takes for the team to reach that goal.

“Nothing is going to be handed to me, obviously, just because I signed,” he said. “I’m going to come in and battle for a position on the field… I’m just going to battle and be as productive as I can.”

Great signings in Dreessen and Tamme! Both young guys and bot just adds to our new look passing attack! Love everything so far, just need a DT and proven RB!

  5. Broncos LAX says:

These guys never sign with Tebow as QB

This has been an amazing FA period. On paper, we have to be the favorites in the AFC west right now.

Even the Broncos FO and others say, that the NFL is cut throat, and that part will never change. Its the NFL, so get over it. Decisions like this are made every day. Nobody really likes that side of the business end, but tough decision have to be made. We even see that every day in the work places of the USA. Its the way of life in this day and age. It sucks, but its reality, moving on!!

Hunter isn`t a bad signing, if we bring him back. He`s a quality back up and starter if someone goes down.

Out of curiosity, I wonder how much money the Broncos have left to spend on FA and the draft?

Sorry to bring it up, just thought I’d comment on it… The NY media out here is slamming the Jets for this move for so many reasons.. Not showing Sanchez any support… Being a publicity move only to sell tickets, as believe it or not, the Jets still have season tickets available in the luxury boxes in their new stadium… For marketing Tebow to such an extreme already, confirming it was all for the money… And lastly, saying the wild cat is a thing of the past, and for the Jets to expect people to believe that’s why they brought in Tebow is laughable… It was Woody Johnson who wanted Tebow, not necessarily the coaching staff… That’s the word out here..

  11. Broncos LAX says:

They should soon shed 4.5 million from Goodman and look for Champ to restructure he wants to win… and Dumervil too I don’t think he can live up to his contract and he doesnt like the burden of it.

  12. Broncos LAX says:

OT thanks for the insight being in NY we wouldnt hear that out here glad to know noone wanted him for his on field passing ability

  13. strandoftds says:

LAX, I hope it happens soon, Goody is old and far to expensive.

And as we know, the New York media is merciless.

  16. OrangeTsunami says:

Well, to be fair, it’s just speculation, much like we saw in Denver.. But a lot of people are saying it doesn’t make sense to bring in a guy and guarantee him snaps in the wildcat behind your QB.. Apparently the Jets ranked very high in the red zone last year, so that theory is out the window.. They say if the Jets really believed in Tebow so much, then trade Sanchez, and make Tebow your QB.. But to give Sanchez an extension, and then bring in a polarizing figure like Tebow behind him is a sucker punch to Samchez…

  17. strandoftds says:

If the Jets need a two point conversion, you know who to turn to. Tim Tebow bat 1000 in the two point conversions. Might as well bring in the sure fire-power when the game is on the line.

Repost: The worst part of the trade to the jets is, if you can take ryan at his word, they will be using TT every week (how much depending, I imagine, on past success and game situations).

If we learned nothing else last year, it is that T-ball is exciting as all get out.

So, that means I probably gonna wanna watch a few jets games next year, and I friggin hate the jets. Along with the Cowboys, Ravens, and Steelers, they are my least favorite team.

I believe the signing of Porter was a huge great move. it will give us another proven cb to play along the side of Champ. Now when teams try to pick on someone, we have a player that can handle it. he will get many opportunities to grab interceptions because teams are going to go after him before they go after Champ and I believe he is a much better corner than Goodman. I say trade Goodman to save money and work on getting a solid Dt since Bunkley signed with the Saints. It would be great if we could sign Solai if he hasnt already signed with someone. with Warren coming backff of injury. we will need a beefy dt to play beside him. I am telling you guys that we are not far away from a Championship. If we can stay healthy, we will have a great chance to go to the BOWL. get a starting dt. some depth at lb, safety, o-lineman, Rb,wr,and a solid back up qb and we will be there guys. I take my hat off to the coaches and staff for our BRONCOS. They have made wonderful moves to give us a great chance to go and win it all. Now if the condition and strength coaches can build our guys up and keep them healthy, we have most of the pieces to go all the way. we should definitely win the WEST this year and by far. We do have a very tough schedule but we have what we need to win most of our games. I see us going atleast 10-6 or 11-5 with a bye and a home playu-off game. We can do it this year guys. LETS GOOO BRONCOS ! IWILLX2

I think our offense looks great with manning taking over. I do not see the need to “surround him with weapons,” we have a great receiver core with Op-thomas (as in optimus prime haha) being the clear #1 and the addition of Dreeson. We should stay all defense in the draft getting Brockers in round 1 and maybe safety Harrison Smith in round 2 . Point is… we need to get someone in the secondary to learn from Dawkins or Champ while theyre still here. Also loved the Porter pick up.

Also does anyone else think we should hold out and get RB Montee Ball outa Wisconsin next year? With our oline I think Mcgahee will do for another season.
