One day after signing with the Broncos, cornerback Tracy Porter participated in a conference call with the local media. He credited the team’s coaching staff and championship aspirations as a major factors into his decision to sign with Denver.
“After going around visiting teams, I felt like first and foremost Denver put me in a good situation – coming in and being able to help the team win,” Porter said. “From the start, I really enjoyed the coaching staff, spending time with those guys.”
Porter brings Super Bowl experience to the team’s roster, having been a part of the Saints’ Super Bowl XLIV victory over the Colts. In that game, Porter made a name for himself in sealing the game for New Orleans after returning an interception 74 yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter. That play stopped a potential game-tying drive for the Colts and instead gave the Saints a 31-17 lead with 3:12 left in the game.
“(That play) definitely put a bigger spotlight on me and my career because that’s the stage that everybody tries to get to,” Porter said. “That’s the stage that everyone in the world is basically watching that game. If you make a big play in the game, everybody is going to want to know who that guy is that made the play. It definitely helped lift my career and helped put a spotlight on me.”
The quarterback on the other end of that pick-six was Porter’s new teammate, Peyton Manning. While Porter said he did run into Manning and had a brief conversation with the new Broncos quarterback, the big play did not come up.
But he says it will eventually.
“No, we didn’t talk about that,” he said, laughing. “I’m sure it’ll eventually come up during training camp, OTAs or what not. But that first visit, we just wanted to find out where each other’s focus was as far as helping this club win.”
Once on opposite sidelines for a Super Bowl, the pair plans to chase their second rings this season.
Porter, who signed with Denver after playing the first four years of his career in New Orleans, hopes to return to the city next February for another game in the Superdome, which will host Super Bowl XLVI.
“I’m looking to begin my career here with the Denver Broncos and help this club get back to New Orleans so we can win a championship,” Porter said.
He’s looking forward to joining forces with Champ Bailey in the Broncos’ secondary and says he has a lot to learn from the 11-time Pro Bowler.
“I thought about that when I got down here, what it would be like playing with Champ,” Porter said. “He’s a guy that’s been in the league for quite a while, so that’s definitely somebody that I want to learn from and further my game under. He will be a great mentor for me. I’m looking forward to it. The coaches say he’s a great guy and I’ve heard nothing but great things about him.”
With his eyes on a championship, Porter says he’ll do whatever it takes for the team to reach that goal.
“Nothing is going to be handed to me, obviously, just because I signed,” he said. “I’m going to come in and battle for a position on the field… I’m just going to battle and be as productive as I can.”

This is going to be a very good fix guys, glad finally somethings getting done
if we can address DT, then i think our shot at a Super Bowl are very good…MVP QB, Good WR Corps, Good RB’s (if healthy), Good Oline, Outstanding Pass Rush and a Secondary that has greatly improved with the additions of Adams and Porter, not to mention the Broncos CLUTCH kicker
im getting very excited about the 2012 season
in Walter’s newest mock they have us taking Kendall Wright at 25 WR out of Baylor
Yah von_doom, my heart starts beating, when I think about how good were going to be. I also am glad that were back to a Conventional offense, feels like its a professional football team again. The Circus is crazy is NY rt now, not sure why rex would do that to the team, when they already had locker room issues, crazy.
Porter is going to learn so much from CHAMP I can not wait as someone put it the FA bees are flocking to their honeycomb now which is Manning. I don’t mind not getting Saturaday he’s older would have been more expensive and Walton is on the rise under Manning’s tutelage he will be great
yea MT the sky is the limit for Denver this year…. alot of people are questioning Manning and i dont get it Manning worked out for 3 teams in one week throwing 70+ passes each time and all 3 coaches said he looked great throwing the ball, doctors have said with his injury his neck will be no problem and re-injury would be unlikely however they questioned his arm strength and the 70+ passes 3 times in a week confirms his arm is strong
and honestly i couldnt watch another season with Tebow at the helm it was way too frustrating to watch us getting our ass kicked around for 80% of the game until the final 10 minutes lol
McShay has us taking Jerel Worthy DT from Michigan State. I find it very hard distinguishing who I’d want given the choice of Worthy, Still, Cox, etc. Such a deep class.
If Poe or Brockers fall to us I think they are just a tick above the guys I mentioned above
id be happy with Still in the first, Martin in the second, and the Streeter kid from Miami in the third…with Manning under center they will be leaning to draft Offensive weapons
VD I for the first time in my life fell asleep during a Broncos game!!! So glad the mediocre snoozefest is gone!!!
Vontaze Burficit is no where to be seen! NO WHERE if he drops to the 2nd or 3rd I’d take him!!! Kirkpatrick still if he drops to 25 but I’d take poe first!
i saw a mock that had Brockers falling to us at 25, Kendall Wright in the second and CB Josh Norman in the 3rd…. id be happy with that too
I love Streeter. I had him in my mock I did on here a few weeks back. He’s a big dude
yea LAX it would piss me off seeing all those 3 and outs and putting so much pressure on our D, thats why Manning will make the WHOLE TEAM better
Burfict is garbage, wouldnt be surprised to see him drop to the 5th round, hes slow looked horrible on drills and has an attitude problem…. id pass on him even in the 7th there are much better prospects out there
Streeter is a Beast 6’4 220 i believe… hes underrated cuz hes so young and hasnt had much time as a starter but his highlight tape is sick i believe hed be a STEAL in the 3rd… imagine Thomas and Streeter on the outsides Decker in the slot Dreessen at TE and McGahee, Fannin, and Martin at RB…oh yea and some guy named Peyton Manning throwing them the ball
I would be fine with us taking Stephen Hill at 25. He is a little raw, but if we draft him, he will be able to pair up with DT again. Manning will fix him up fast. I would prefer him over Kendall Wright.
CB2484 He is raw but he would learn to transition with DT Former teamate and same offensive transition. Maybe he drops to the 2nd round now with all the WR there are who signed and all the talent in the draft
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p8Bu3538FdY everyone WATCH youll be in love
LAX, Im with you man, I remember, falling asleep in the KC game that we won in KC, and the Chicago game, I actually was dreaming dude, I mean I was out. It was boring football my god, I wouldnt of gotten the NFL tickey this season if TT, was their this year, and I can do without the friggin Circus, Ive been watching first take all morning. Skip Balis, I think hes actually gay for TT or something, he thinks hes the next best thing since sliced bread or something.
That guys a beast bro, I havent heard anything on him.
Given where Peyton is in his career, I’d rather get a more polished receiver if we were to get one at pick 25 (which I don’t think we should do)
Someone said were supposed to be talking to 4 or 5 DTs this week does anyone know who they are?
Atwater, I know, but PM will be around for at least 3 yrs if he remains healthy.
Tim Tebow is like Oxysgen to skip and he can’t live without it!!!
Everyone is low on Burficit for good reason but when he slides I want us to take him! Justin Houston slid to KC last year and now he is a beast. Dont wanna miss out.
Streeter looks good for sure
If Courtney Upshaw falls to 25, we should definitely take him. He is best in a 4-3, which we run, and he will be very good with Von rushing right behind him. He is also strong against the run in the 4-3, which should take a little pressure off of Miller to make a stop every time the ball is run on his side.
Very true. I do like Hill, I’d be very high on him in the 2nd round.
I’m begging Denver to get us a big ugly DT at #25.
If we get 2yrs out of PM, then we will have a solid team, mission accomplished. Were back to conventional football, the circus is gone, and everyone is gellin together, good move FO
really good signing. If this is gonna be a SB contending team, we’re gonna need these types of guys who have been there and done it.
Larsen signed with Pats I’d like us to sign Lawrence Vickers he’s a colorado kid too. Dreesen can also play FB
Jameel McClain resigned with Bmore
LAX, Vickers unfortunately wanted to go play for “America’s Team.” He is no longer available.
Atwater, we do not need McClain anymore. I never thought that he would sign with us, anyway. He was probably just trying to make the Ravens pay him more by making them think that he might sign with other teams.
We need DDDDDDDDDDDDD, I think we have enough weapons on O, BRING THE FRIGGIN BEEF.
Amobi Okoye will reach his full potential under Del Rio and Fox Bring it on
I really like this pickup it addresses a need, now I think we drop Goodman maybe take another CB in the draft also, any other thoughts on maybe taking Kellen Moore late in the draft?
We don’t need him anymore? With DJ Williams possibly suspended we could definitely use another LB.
I think McClain would have been a nice pickup for us
id be willing to pass on a RB all together in the draft Forreal… Mario Fannin will be a BEAST i guarantee it, the kid is 5’11″ 225 lbs runs a 4.37 and put up 21 bench reps hes big fast and strong… coming back healthy this year he could be seeing most of the carries by the end of the season… NTM he looked fantastic before he got hurt last year
I watched the combine coverage of Kellen Moore throwing… yikes. He definitely looked out of place. I personally am not a fan
VD You echo would I have said he is the man!!! Would have been a 2nd rounder if it wasnt cams offense
I meant that we don’t need him in the middle. We just need a third stringer for the Weakside LB position to be backup until DJ gets back. Woodyard will be great starting. I wish we had signed him to a longer contract. McClain is an Inside LB. DJ plays on the outside. No need in the middle with Joe Mays and Nate Irving.
Nick Foles or Kirk Cousins at QB I also like Weber as does the Coaching staff
Jeff Saturday signed with the Packers
ESPN’s pre-draft power rankings has us in eighth. Behind the best teams NYG, NE, GB, SF, BAL, HOU, and DET. 7 spots above SD. Yeah.
Yikes I disagree. I don’t have much faith in going into camp with Irving and Mays
We were talking earlier about WRs we might take in round 1. If we even consider taking a WR in rd 1, Just go sign Mike Wallace. If you count that you technically have to spend your 1st rd draft pick on a RFA, then he would be the safest WR pick. He is already established as a scary good deep threat, and with DT and ED running all over, add Hill, Caldwell, and Willis, Dreesen, Green (when he returns after 4 games), Thomas, and maybe Tamme or Clark, you get a very good passing game with weapons all over the place. Add a very good running game, then you have maybe the best offense in football.
Atwater, Irving could have been much better last year if there was no lockout. It wasted a learning year. MLB is a very tough position to play. Since Fox and Allen couldn’t work with him last year, he didn’t understand all the nuances of Fox’s defense. Since he now has Fox and Del Rio to teach him, he should learn and will most definitely push for a starting role.
As for Mays, he isn’t very good in coverage, but he was excellent in run defense. In the top ten plays for the defense video that BTV did, most of the tackles were Mays’. He just got better as the season went on.
So once again, I say that we are fine except for a backup for Woodyard until DJ gets back.
champ-
That sounds great and all but unfortunately we have this thing called a Salary Cap. Wallace wants money in the Fitz-Megatron range. We cannot afford him.
At least with the new rookie salary caps first rounders are not ridiculously expensive anymore.
Man Saturday is a Packer. Im surprised!
Possibly, it’s not like Irving was a high draft pick. Having 2 ILB’s isn’t much depth. Still a position that needs to be addressed. OLB isn’t as big of an issue to me because we have guy like Jason Hunter and Doom that have played OLB and DE and can fill in as needed.
If we do cut Goody, we`ll save 4.6 million, and none of it is guaranteed. His bonus came the year he signed his contract, so if we cut him, we`ll have 4.6 million to spend on other players.
And good to know we signed Porter and Dreissen. Bummer we didn`t get Saturday. I thought that that was a for sure thing, oh well. You can`t get them all. It all comes down to money.
I know your right AB. I thought Saturday was a lock.
