P.M. Blog: Day 3

July 27th, 2008 - 5:04pm by Jake Grilley

The Broncos wrapped up day three of training camp the same way they closed out day one, with an afternoon jog-through.

The offense and defense practiced on seperate fields with each team scrimmaging against itself.

ATTENDANCE REPORT: The veterans not in uniform during the afternoon session were Champ Bailey, Brandon Stokley, John Lynch, Tom Nalen, Darrell Jackson, Ebenezer Ekuban and Dewayne Robertson. Robertson, who is among the veterans who get to take the jog-through sessions off, missed this morning’s session as well.

Guard Montrae Holland, who had spent the previous practices working out with Stength Coach Rich Tuten to make training weight, saw some time during practice.

POSTURING FOR POSITION: Aside from going through offensive and defensive plays the Broncos worked on some special teams during their second session of the day.

The team worked on some kickoff return with Eddie Royal, Glenn Martinez, Andre Hall, Clifford Russell and Anthony Alridge fielding the kicks.

KEY PLAYS: During the drill the special teams practiced a few onside kicks. One of which that caught the return team off guard.

Defensive tackle Josh Mallard had to leap on a ball that had bounced past two unsuspecting teammates.

The play earned some friendly jeering from some offensive lineman on the sideline.

Even as the team closed out the day with its limited contact jog through, safety Marquand Manuel said it is clear that the intensity of training camp is head and shoulders above what it was during offseason minicamps.

“You can tell, the pads are on, the gym shorts practices are over with,” Manuel said. “Now we are having real man practices, and you can see who the real men are.”

Manuel, a seven-year pro who has spent time with five other clubs, said that he impressed with the attention given to the little things.

“You can just tell by watching practice that our focus to detail is at an all-time high, the best that I have been around,” he said.

FOCAL POINT: With the afternoon practice geared toward going through the playbook on the field and getting additional mental reps, many players took it upon themselves to take some additional time afterwords to further develop their game.

Keary Colbert, Russell, Marquay McDaniel, Taylor Jacobs, Martinez, Stokley, Darrell Jackson and Samie Parker all stopped by the JUGS machine to get in some extra catches.

For consecutive days, defensive end Jarvis Moss worked with defensive line coach Jacob Burney on pass rushing drills.

Training camp keeps rolling on into tomorrow with day four. Stay tuned to the blog and DenverBroncos.com for complete coverage from training camp.

  2. blakerbomb123-

They don’t run return drills full speed, but he had a really nice burst through the hole. His quickness is very noticeable.

    hey gray -

thanks for the blog. it’s exciting to have access to some “eyes” at training camp. i, unfortunately, live smack dab in the middle of the black hole.

anyway, some questions for you: how is josh barrett looking – any chance he’s a diamond in the rough? and how about peyton hillis – do you think he’s an nfl’er? how does marcus thomas look – i was worried when i read that kenny peterson was starting – does this mean they’re not happy with marcus? has ben hamilton been holding up now that he’s taken a few cracks? does torain look fast enough? is ryan harris going to start?

alright, that should keep you busy for awhile.

    wish i had your job.

Things seem to be progressing nicely, so that’s positive. Keep up the good work, Broncos!

    chickenman lives –

First of all, nice name. I like it. But ok, on to some of your questions.

Both Josh Barrett and Jack Williams, the team’s 2008 rookie DBs, look to be taking to their positions well. It helps Barrett that he has so many talented veterans ahead of him to learn from, and as far as I can tell he seems to be handling all the new information well.

Peyton Hillis is certainly an NFL’er. Cecil Sapp has been running with the first unit offense, seeing as he’s the incumbent starter and Hillis is a rookie. But Hillis has shown flashes he has what it takes — on a couple plays he’s caught a pass out of the backfield and made a few moves up field, and he can block with the best of them, from what I’ve seen.

Marcus Thomas looks fine. Coach Shanahan said Kenny Peterson has earned a chance to run with the first team after his performance at OTAs, but as you know the defensive line of all the positions rotates fairly often. So Thomas is getting plenty of reps himself.

Ben Hamilton has looked like his old self. He and Tom Nalen have been taking care of business during O-Line drills — not many people have been able to get by either of them in the one-on-ones, either.

Torain looks plenty fast, but his best characteristic — in my eyes — is his bulk. He is a big guy and you can tell he can handle some pounding during a game. He is just getting his feet wet in training camp, being a rookie, but he’s been making a few plays out there.

We don’t know about who’s going to start come the season, and Coach Shanahan has made it clear nothing has been determined. As of right now he’s running with the first unit offensive line.

Javalon — Jarvis certainly still has his speed, I couldn’t tell you about the weight gain, all I know is he has certainly been beating his man around the corner in one-on-one drills and coaches have been applauding his effort.

crherrera — Attendance has been great and we’d love to have anyone and everyone out to watch some practice. The more the merrier.

All right, hope those helped and we appreciate the interest. Keep ‘em coming!

What about Marshalls meeting with gutless goodell. Is there gona be any suspention. I think some one on NFL network said he might get a 4 to 8 game suspension. I think thats rediculous. 2 to four is all he should get

  11. allo57 says:

    Marshall should not be suspended.
and certainly should not get more than a steroid user (4 games) or someone whos failed 2 drug tests (8 games)

15 hasnt been convicted of anything nor has he been arrested for a violent crime involvin a weapon.
How many games did Tnak Johnson get after having his home raided by the ATF?

4-8 games is shameless persecution and overly $$$$$$.
