On Monday, the Broncos announced several roster transactions, including the additions of free-agent wide receiver Chad Jackson and tackle Matt Murphy to their active roster.
The team also signed cornerback Josh Bell to its active roster from its practice squad while adding center Greg Eslinger and cornerback Rashod Moulton to the practice squad.
Jackson is a third-year wide receiver who spent his first two seasons with New England, which selected him in the second round of the 2006 NFL Draft. He competed in training camp with the Patriots this season but was waived on Aug. 31.
In 14 career games with one start, Jackson has totaled 13 receptions for 152 yards with three touchdowns, along with four rushes for 22 yards. He owns five career punt returns for 83 yards and six kickoff returns for 106 yards. The wide receiver has also appeared in three career playoff games, returning four kickoffs for 78 yards and adding one special-teams stop.
Jackson was a semifinalist for the Biletnikoff Award — awarded to the nation’s top receiver — and a first-team All-Southeastern Conference selection as a junior at the University of Florida.
Murphy is a seventh-year tackle who spent the last two seasons with Buffalo after playing for Houston and Detriot in previous seasons. Selected by the Lions in the seventh round of the 2002 NFL Draft, Murphy has appeared in 28 career games with three starts at both the tackle and tight end positions.
Murphy was inactive for Buffalo’s 2008 season opener before the club released him on Sept. 13.
Bell is a rookie cornerback who spent the last five weeks on Denver’s practice squad after joining the club on Sept. 24. He entered the NFL with the Chargers on May 2 as a college free agent from Baylor University but was waived by San Diego on Aug. 31.
Eslinger is a third-year center who begins his second stint with the Broncos, who selected him in the sixth round of the 2006 NFL Draft from the University of Minnesota.
He signed with Cleveland’s active roster from Denver’s practice squad on Nov. 14, 2007, but was inactive for all four games with the Browns. Eslinger finished that season on Houston’s practice squad and competed in its 2008 training camp before he was waived on Aug. 30.
Eslinger was a consensus All-American who received the Outland Trophy — awarded to the nation’s best interior lineman — as a senior at Minnesota.
Moulton is a first-year cornerback who joins the Broncos from Jacksonville, which released him from its practice squad on Sept. 1. He entered the NFL with the Jaguars on May 14, 2007, as a college free agent from Fort Valley State University and spent his entire rookie campaign on the club’s practice squad.
Moulton played defensive back, running back and wide receiver at Fort Valley State, where he also returned kickoffs and punts. He posted five interceptions while averaging 7.9 yards (19-151) on punt returns as a senior.

Where is Josh barrett, why is he not on the active roster. Fans are we missing something here? The guy is fast and huge lets get him some reps.
yep i have said all yr long bring up barrett.. all yr long why not it cant get worse and give him some experience. hes fast big strong tackels well. something we could use. idk bones i really dont know wut to think.. ive said it since preseason put him on the active roster and cut manuel…. idk what shanny is doin not letttin barrett have a shot. lowry had his shot he sucked. manule is just terrible. mccree is solid.. give barrett a shot plz shanny
How demoralizing is this? We need Def help so we load up on WR/TE-OT…oh, excuse me, we did sign a CFA- DB on the roster from the PS. We bring back Eslinger to the PS, whom we lost as a PS player and who never caught on, even in Texas w/Kubiak. WTF?
We give up 254 yds running, and we dont sign any run stopping support…God, I would suck as a GM or HC!!!! I always presumed that you use the “Weakest Link In The Chain” concept when building a team. Apparently that is now “Old School” thinking.
As for Barrett, who knows? Im still trying to figure out Hillis playing only on ST, while a LB does the FB duties…and did we cut Josh Shaw? Now this is the perfect definition of “pretzel logic”.
I hate to see us have to sign on a bunch of less-experienced CB’s to replace Champ but we gotta do what we gotta do. I hope he heals up FAST because our defense is going to suffer big time if they don’t learn to play without such a strong leader for 4-6 weeks. That sounds like forever and its going to feel like forever but our D needs to grow up and play like they want to be here… and with Champ going to be on the sidelines maybe they’ll learn more from him when they have to depend on themselves. I don’t know… I’m just hoping they have some brilliant plan for coming back against Miami and getting this team back on track.
Speaking of which, I can’t believe I’m about to say this but I don’t think Miami is going to be an easy game at all. They beat Buffalo 25-16… this coming from the team last year who almost ended up with the ultimate losing season. This coming from the team last year that was the worst in the league and was just plain horrible. Yeah, any person with a brain can figure out we need to work on 1 or 2 things (I’m being sarcastic… get used to it, I do it alot)… but it takes someone special like Shanny to get us out of this ditch we got ourselves into. Actually, it not only takes someone like Shanny but the entire team to follow through with his masterful mind and bring this team back to its feet.
All I’m gonna say about this Miami game for now, is that if we play like we have been for the last 4 weeks and/or we lose… this team has got some MAJOR issues to work out. I will not accept us losing to Miami… I don’t even want to go there but it needed to be said. We are a much better team than what we’ve shown in the last 4 weeks… this losing streak needs to be put to an end ASAP!!!
As for yesterday, thank God the Chargers lost – ha ha – gets funnier everytime. So now we’re back up to being 2 games ahead of them but we have to take advantage of that. That can change in the blink of an eye, I highly doubt any true Bronco fan would want that to change because we can’t fix our own problems. I don’t think we have to worry about KC & Oakland, they’re so far behind its like they don’t even exist. I just hate the fact that we gave KC their only win so far and probably for the rest of the season. It’s still bugging me. Anyhoo, bottom line is our D needs a brand new start, motivation to change the way they play and the will to WIN. Our offense is better but there’s still plenty to work on and change to be even better. I’ve got faith in Cutler and what he can do for this team… he is the future of this team and I can’t wait for him to prove it.
Have faith Broncos Country!!
GO BRONCOS!!!!!!!
so with all these additions to the roster, did anyone get cut?
im hoping to see hall or lowry gone
and its killin me that we bring in no name people and not give our talented draft pick safety a shot. all im saying is we are gonna need a physical guy with speed to stop ted ginn jr this next week….. and i feel barrett is the only one capable.
So no backup QB??
I like the Chad Jackson pick up. If he stays healthy, he can cause more mis-matches and add some much needed speed to our WR corp.
On the other hand though, I’m just as confused as you guys are. Where is Josh Barrett?
we need John Lynch back, that is all there is to it.
MTBroncoGal, didn’t we already move Hackney up from the practice squad when we announced Ramsey was out for the season? We didn’t want to carry 3 qb’s on the active roster or he would have been there, reason Ramsey was is every teams needs “a more veteran” qb on the roster. No matter how talented your young backup is, if your starter goes down you want experience over talent every time.
I don’t really like all the db pick ups, I mean we do need a little more depth there now for the next month but I agree with a lot of you bring up our safety, he’s quick enough to make up for a mistake he makes because he doesn’t have the experience to recognize the play as quickly. But put him at safety and let him go lynch some people. That would motivate the D a lil more.
That being said I don’t know the OL we picked up really, but we need depth there too, you realize Litchensteiger is the backup for LG, C, and RG. Polumbus is backup at LT but we have NO BACKUP RT! We need atleast 1 more OL incase someone gets hurt in a game. So no matter who it is, I like that addition just for the “”"”"”IF”"”"”" factor.
Our offense is great, potent, explosive, and exciting when they don’t turn the ball over. That kills everything, momentum, drives, takes away points, and gives the other team points. Our D is not lost without Champ guys, we can easily still make the playoffs and if Champ comes back in 4 weeks I expect we go 3-1 and right the ship in that time.
Just hold onto the ball and we will be fine. In all our loses we were our own worst enemy, we stop helping the other team beat us and we will slaughter them! I wonder what we have set up to slow the wild cat offense???
Keep the faith guys, 07elway and I are!
Hold onto the ball offense, and defense; maintain your gaps!
GOOOOOO BRONCOS!
ok i understand the signing of jackson that was pretty smart but our offense dosent have any issues except mentally which is to hold on to the ball n not cause turnovers and score more points but with jackson our offense is more powerful…are we focusing on our offensive to win games for us bkuz i thought for sure josh barrett would have gotten upgraded to the roster…why not bench manuel i think MCcree did better than him but he got benched n not manuel…i really dont understand..i’d rather see mccree and lowry or lowry and barret or barrett and mccree…why did we sign O lineman…..i thought the focus was on the defense…can somebody help me out…im lost…maybe shanny has someting else up his sleeve or isnt finished with transactions…hopefully we’ll see wuts up before the dolphins come to town…
Alright my question is what the heck happened to two of my posts. One on the last Denverbroncos.com article, and the other on Coop’s I think. Anyone know if your posts get deleted for having 1 maybe 2 obscenities in them? I didn’t think they did because I’ve read plenty of posts that said more than what I slipped with.
Anyway with all the “skill” players we just signed anyone notice a theme with them, being SPECIAL TEAMS!? I think Shanny is thinking not just offense, but don’t let Hall risk another fumble ESPECIALLY on a kick off! That would’ve been as bad as I can imagine! Then possibly taking Royal out from punt return duties completely. That’s my thoughts.
babychamp-broncos^ to answer your question about the O lineman addition I suggest you read my previous post above yours, but so you don’t have to. I will say it again….
We have no depth on our Offensive Line. We have Litchensteiger as our backup RG, C, AND LG; then we have Polumbus as the backup LT. We do not have a backup RT, and if Hamilton, Kuper, or Weigmann were to get injured in a game we have no backup for those three positions after filling the previous injury.
It’s a very smart move by adding another O lineman to the active roster, but not bringing up barret is going to really bring the hurt on a ton of posts on this blog after people read it.
But like I said, anyone know how my posts could have been deleted, and/or why??
I love the Chad Jackson pick-up, it takes wid-outs at least two-three years to really adjust in most cases….now I agree with all what is going on with Josh Barrett, he was projected as a 3rd round pick and we draft him in the what 7th round, he is young big and fast, lets get him on the field NOW–he will adjust.
“we need John Lynch back, that is all there is to it.”
+1
agreed,,we all like the Chad Jackson pickup..surely another big target for Cutler,,hoping he remains long enough w/ the team to get in groove with Cutler and Co……i too am worried about Barrett not being activated…i hope Shanny still has sum more moves up his sleeve…..
Sundays game might be a problem with Joey Porter and Ted Ginn posting good numbers this week…
Chad Jackson is at home now he has the deep speed that denver wanted, we wanted him in the draft when we got Cutler and Marshall. Marshall, Royal and Chad Jackson will make a good trio. I think Cutlers touchdowns are gonna go up. A defensiveback cannot hold him one on one. He was the fastest in the draft 3 years ago. He is here to stay only if he stays out of trouble and does what he needs to do. I think denver will win the AFC west.
We all want to know why Josh Barrett isnt playing he has great speed and he can bring in the physical toughness that our safties are missing. We need to fire the defensive staff they are hurting us. We have talent in Josh Barrett but they want to sit him out but we need that talent out there on the field. We should start up a blog to see if other bronco fans agree with firing the defensive staff.
deep speed he blew his knee out last year in the playoffs and has not played much sense…and jackson adds speed please….he’s not going to do anything!!! colbert was just as good if not better then him!!! BARRETT is the man,, woodyard and larsen are the man!!! thats the future of this d fense,,with M. thomas….we need sum vetern leadership on defense….hey too bad we didnt try to get DT rodgers in FA…or JEnkins…wtf….our team needs sum better direction from the leadership!!! please!!
I only count a 52 Man roster. That means one more spot is available and that should be a QB. You would suspect Hackney to be activated from the Practice Squad unless there’s something in the works to bring in a FA QB.
All those names means nothing to me,Give Josh Barrett a try and bring back John LYNCH. Also give Al WILSON a call , he’s probably still better than some of the players we have now.
bosco we dont need Lynch we need to look towards the future. I agree we need to give Josh barrett a try.
ramboskithefan if denver felt Chad Jackson wasnt a 100 percent they would have not picked him up.
We all realize that there are other changes that need to happen on the defensive side of the ball – whether it is personnel, scheme or just motivation and hard work, we have to improve. Between porous defense and lack of ability to hold onto the ball, we are a pretty average team right now. I don’t know about the rest of you, but even if we beat Miami (a big IF at this point; even at home), I don’t feel confident even with a two game lead over the Chargers. They haven’t been winning, but they have looked better than we have and have been a bit more competitive on the field in the past few weeks. Let’s hope for improvement this week.
Big Al cant pass a team physical so he wont be able to play even if we did think of bringing him back..
If the coaching staff isnt bringing Barrett up it must be for a reason, they arent NFL coaches for nothing.. sure he looked good in preseason, but so did lowry, a lot of players can look good playing against 2nd and 3rd stringers.. some of you praise him like he’s the savior of our defence.. well, hes not.. im all for giving him a shot but i dont see him making any huge difference
I am curious why the delay in activating Hackney? I fond it odd. Anyone have any actual insight there?
God Bless The Bronco’s!
man stop leting shany make personel decisions where is barrett and rogers we need safety’s
uhh ok correct me if i wrong. buh as i recall back in 06 before we drafted cutler alot of mock drafts had the broncs takin this jackson character first round over cutler. ur kiddin me. Boy were they idiots, this dude is a nobody. So uhh why we pickin him up. nd i think tht shanahan is an amazing coach. one of the best if not the best. buh wussup wit pickin up all these offensive people were deep as hell on offense. is he delusional we SUCK on defense how bout we pick up a couple safeties nd a corner nd bulk up on defense. ur killin me. O nd just a thought any body think we should give Culpepper a call so he could back up cutler for a year. in case (god forbid) he goes down. just a thought. Come on shanahan u killin me wit these no names on defense. is it just me or are we gettin more terrible than we were on defense. Tlk to me people!! LATE
CUT MANUEL!!!!!!! is that hard to see hes a bumb we all know it he cantr tackle and he definitely cant tackle lowry missed to many tackles but he was there he just needs to mane the play were has josh barret gone they need to activate him and moss needs to start at end and woodyard needs to take boss spot he is good enough to do it look at what he did in the preseason the kids got talent come on shanny lets make some smart moves we have the right guys lets start playing them now we nned to turn this thing around before the chargers start playing well again were getting lucky they keep on losing but there gonna play better.lets get torain in the miami game and see what he can do.
AL WILSON !
Bring in Simeon Rice. Working out everyday and his shoulder is healed.
Sure hopin’ that some of these obscure pieces can fill in some of the slight holes in the personnel puzzle…but I think the problem with the D is more due to being a victim of scheme than personnel. I agree with most on here that Lowry is worthless (how many missed tackles and plain “whiffs” has he had?) and should definitely go, and Barrett should get a chance to play. The safeties have kind of SEVERELY stunk it up… McCree is ok, but the rest are simply scrubs. I though Manuel would at least be decent, but that hasn’t been the case. THE SAFETIES ARE THE BIGGEST PROBLEM ON THE WHOLE TEAM!
JOSH BARRETT WHERE IS HE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am hopeful that they will win but reality is a percise passer like pennington will carve this team up, not to mention Brown and Williams. Lets hope they win this game like the Bucs game.
Simeon Rice…didn’t we already try that experiment last year???
If u guys didnt c it, Al wilson retired earlier this year. He cant recover from his neck injury years ago so he ccouldnt pass his physical… We would all love to c him back but thats just how it goes
Bring back Lynch, sign Barrett to the active roster
I still think we will have a tough time against the run and pass attack that miami has. As long as our offense can keep theres off the field we should be in good shape for a W. Can we get a first down guys!!!!?
