Players Discuss QB Change

October 11th, 2011 - 5:39pm by Max Henson

After receiving word that Tim Tebow would be taking over for Kyle Orton in Week 7 against the Dolphins, several Broncos shared their thoughts on the change and spoke about the unique traits Tebow brings to the quarterback position.

Here are a few quotes from inside the locker room:

WR Eric Decker on Tebow’s growth:
“With his progression over the last year-and-a-half, he’s just gotten more comfortable with the system. It’s a lot coming from college football to the NFL learning a new system with the speed that everybody has. He’s always had confidence, but getting the experience and getting the passes and just trusting himself and trusting his drops, trusting his throws and trusting the guys around him-that is something you learn as time goes on.”

Decker on Tebow’s ability to extend plays:
“We better get some extra conditioning in, because he’s going to be running around a little longer. But it can be a good thing because you can get a broken play and scramble out, get one guy deep and one guy short and get some explosive plays that keep drives alive.”

“One thing you can’t take away from him is that heart, that emotion. That’s something he carries on his sleeve and brings every day to work. He’s a guy that won’t be outworked and that rubs off on people. It might not be the most conventional way but he finds a way to get it done.”

TE Daniel Fells on what Tebow brings to the team:
“Tim has his a little factor that only he brings. He’s a scrambling quarterback that does some different things, so you definitely notice that. It’s a little bit different with him running around back there, so you always have to be ready for it.”

QB Kyle Orton on conversations he’s had with Tebow:
“Helping him in any way that I can, and like I said, help the team in any way that I can.”

Orton on his disappointment:
“I’m just disappointed with everything. I wish I could have played better, wish we had a better record, wish a lot of things, but the reality is what it is.”

LB Joe Mays On Tebow’s ability:
“He’s going to do whatever it takes. He’s going to work harder than anybody else and he’s going to make sure he does what needs to be done to be successful.”

“Some people may call him unorthodox, but at the end of the day he gets the job done. When his number is called he’s always looking to go out there and perform and make plays.”

Below are some photos from the morning practice.

If Tim wins some games and progresses through the season then we can look forward to filling some holes in this coming draft. If not It`s QB`s Luck, Barkley, Foles, or Lance Landry Jones.

  2. killerkod says:

I agree bay……….and that’s the way it should be. 11 games is almost 3/4 of the season, and plenty of time to see if he has what it takes. I don’t think they’re really concerned about the record he will lead the team to, but more about his progression.

  3. strandoftds says:

Carnage, you are one depressed dude.

  4. sndvl says:

Wouldn’t it be funny if the Colts end up with #1 and we get #2.

A certain Stanford QB refuses to play for the Colts and gets traded to Denver.

Where have I heard that before?

  5. strandoftds says:

    Deja Vu!

  6. brian_schneider says:

I think the coaching staff will be delightfully surprised with Tebow. He has the capability to improve now he just needs to demonstrate that he is “able” to improve.

  7. strandoftds says:

I `m of the belief that Tim Tebow will succeed and be our future QB.

  8. brian_schneider says:

I hope so as well strandoftds..I hope so as well.

  9. strandoftds says:

Then we can focus on a top 10 pick to fill a big need such as a CB or DT.

  10. Denverbum5567 says:

Well truth be told denver is not going to get luck. here is why

The colts are 0-5 and if manning does not come back they will maybe win 1

The dolphins are 0-4 with out the starting QB and will loose to Denver

So with the tie breaker Denver beats Miami and colts loose to the CIN
and we mange all at the end of the year to be 3-13 the colts will get first and Miami will get second and denver will get third.

Factor in the vikings as well if they beat us in MIN then we will get third and they get 4th but Denver wins that game 3rd win ov the year denver then could take 4th in the draft.

The only hope denver has for luck is manning coming back for the colts and denver loosing to Miami and the Vikings and the colts this week beating Cin to break the tie breaker.

I see denver getting 3rd pick at best and maybe taking a shot at jones or moore if they think tebow is not the guy.

  11. strandoftds says:

I forgot about Kellen Moore. I like Moore but he`s pretty short when it comes to todays NFL QB standards. Just saying.

  12. brian_schneider says:

I don’t think the Broncos will get Luck because Tebow will show he can improve and work on becoming a better QB and we’ll feel that we don’t need Luck.

We won’t use a Top 10 pick on a DT, we desperately needed one this past draft and let that idea go. I like the Von Miller pick, don’t get me wrong, but Fox won’t use that high of a draft pick on a DT, heck he might not use a draft pick at all on a DT.

  13. strandoftds says:

With Tebow starting now I honostly think we will win 4 or five more games, no joke.

  14. strandoftds says:

We just might go after a CB in the 2012 draft. It`s a deep class for CB`s. I`d personally like to get a big RB like Alabama`s Trent Richardson to complement McGahee. But hey, it`s the start of the 2011 season so it`s very early when it comes to the next draft. Tebow will win us some games, just wait and see.

  15. baylinorcrush says:

Bum you bum, LOL, the tie breaker for draft order is difficulty of schedule not head to head and since we have the 3rd hardest schedule in the league we are pretty much assured to win any tie breaker, plenty of time to talk about that crap though.

  16. carnagebronc says:

Not depressed at all….watch every snap of every game….win or lose…watch objectively rooting for the team and not a player…have said numerous times that I am not an Ortonite…but I also do not believe in Tebow. Just me. Didnt believe in McD when we were 6-0….got bashed for that…..didnt think we dravted well…thought we should have picked Orakpo and Bryant…..objectively in the best interest of the team. Think the whole Tebow situation us a bad one for the team. Cannot help it. If he wins 2 games this year….people will still clamor for him for next year….so if we draft high we r in the same qq as before. I hzve said very often, that the team play was not all on Orton. The defense is bad. Not as bad as last year but still bad. No pass rush, no coverage besides Champ. We r lacking in the skill positions. Truth is truth. Any qb would look bad throwing to our guys. Just a fact. I have also said i feel good about Fox and the direction. Given a couple of drafts, we can pull a Detroit. I wanna see if the ” Tebow Nation” is as critical of his work as they are of Orton.

  17. baylinorcrush says:

Personally Tebow or no Tebow is not going to hurt my feelings any, the big thing is that we have switched out of neutral and shifted into first gear sitting down Orton and starting Tebow. However who will get this team in top gear eventually doesn’t really matter to me.

  18. strandoftds says:

Last night the Jets traded 37 year old WR Derrick Mason to the Texans for an undisclosed draft pick.

  19. strandoftds says:

Bay do you know who is the top two teams ahead of us for the strength of schedule. I have no clue. Just curious.

  20. strandoftds says:

I care. I personally want to see Tim Tebow succeed.

  21. strandoftds says:

So carnage, what I hear you saying is, it`s not that you like Orton so much, buts it`s that you can`t stand Tim Tebow? Is that right?

  22. baylinorcrush says:

Actually the 3rd in strength of schedule won’t come in to play for us either since that is based on the 2010 teams records, they will use this year strength of schedule to figure out the tie breaker for draft positionning therefore you have to wait til season end to know that. So I’m a bum too, just not quite as big a one, LOL.

  23. strandoftds says:

Good to know. I`ll jot that down.

  24. baylinorcrush says:

I’m working off my memory bank here but I’m pretty positive that’s how it works.

  25. baylinorcrush says:

Now I think the players will be off at least until Sunday, so that’s gonna kill the blog a little, like a bye week for the bloggers too? Or will they keeep assailing the airwaves for their boy Tebow?

  26. baylinorcrush says:

    To Carnage’s delight, LOL.

  27. Denverbum5567 says:

Yeah some good CB coming out this draft but Denver should take a look at a quality RB Willie Mac is long in the tooth and Moreno is a bust at RB good at slant routes and catching the ball we should use him like How the Saints used Reggie Bush.

baylinorcrush its is not only based on strength of schedule besides the colts have one of if not the hardiest schedule. Taken from Google Draft rules.

First factor is win to lose ratio based on conference and non conference games. The team with the most losses will be granted the 1st pick in the draft followed by teams with the second most losses and so on. all playoff teams draft based on where they ended the season and how many losses they had. A team 9-7 could pick later then a team thats 11-5 if they make it further in the playoffs.

Second factor is strength of schedule this is based on teams overall performance from the year prior it is determined based on team% and playoff appearance. depending on teams with a higher % is considered a tough match. for ex if a team faces an average of teams that are 500 or better and another team faces an average of 250 the team with the harder schedule will be granted the higher pick

Third factor (known as tie breaker) Is if teams finish off with the same first 2 factors a tie breaker who gets the higher pick is determined by teams faced in season play. This means if 2 teams finish 0-16 and the first 2 factors are even and they did not face off in season play it is awarded by team ranking so if one team is 32nd ranked and the other is 31st rank the team with the lower rank will get the higher pick.

However if the teams both went 1-15 based off head to head would be he tie breaker. So if the lions and the browns both finished at 1-15 and the lions beat the bears and the browns lost to the bears the browns would get the higher pick.

If the lions beat the bears and the browns beat the chargers it comes down to 2 things what team had a better win% for strength of schedule. if both teams are even it goes to conference win %. if both teams have the same % and everything else is even head to head

    it is determined by power-ranking

This was on cbs sports line for draft rules. it has never happened in the past where 2 teams were tied like that. Only once in history was the tie breaker system needed in a draft that was in 2002.

  28. baylinorcrush says:

Thanks for the info, of course we had all that info posted here last year when we were fighting for the highest draft pick, but this is way too early to go there now, no one will remember any of that by season end when it matters.

  29. strandoftds says:

Bay, they practiced yesterday and will today, then they are off until Monday from what I understand. Their Four days off were
    1. This past monday.
    2. This Thursday thru Sunday from what I know.

  30. baylinorcrush says:

Good post for a bye week though.

  31. fanidaho says:

Time to rally around the team. I did not want Orton as QB, but still wanted Denver to win. Now that Tebow is the QB we can see what we have. Lets rally around the team and see how many wins we get. Fox and Elway will determine if we need to draft for a QB, our job is to support the team.

  32. Denverbum5567 says:

    Broncos bye week schedule

    Wed 12th FP
    Thur 13th off
    Fri 14th off
    Sat 15th off
    Sun 16th off
    Mon 17th off
    Tues 18th FP
    Wed 19th FP
    Thurs 20th FP
    Fri 21st FP
    Sat 22nd Reps
    Sun 23rd Game Day

  33. baylinorcrush says:

The new cba says they need 4 days off, so Monday and Thursday thru Saturday makes it 4, because a week starts on Sunday, but maybe not in the NFL? That would then mean 5 days off, maybe because Monday is usually a day off so it doesn’t count, but who cares they’re gonna be off, haha.

  34. baylinorcrush says:

I bet Tebow doesn’t want to be off at all! But he has to…

  35. Denverbum5567 says:

In the NFL the week begins on monday, Monday is used to rest after gameday and is considered a day off in the NFL. If I read the CBA right no team is allowed to Run any practice of any kind on monday.

However teams can use the day for meetings and film but Fox said at the start of the year he will not ask the players to attend the meetings or film on Mondays unless it is a short week (Thursday night game)

  36. strandoftds says:

Tim ‘Sparky” Tebow is getting his reps yesterday and today. After that he`ll work out on his own I bet.

  37. O&BinCostaRica says:

He even said so. Made a good iPad commercial in the process! LOL!

  38. mcmcnees says:

Elway said that during a bye week, if he “exhaled”, he felt like it was too hard to get back into it. So, I assume Timmy will be focused.

  39. strandoftds says:

new blog. This is a good topic.

  40. FLBroncoGator says:

O&BinCostaRica, you got that right LOL! I can see that one coming already.

  41. Ohio says:

I’m glad I’m not the only one noticing Goodman and Vaughn getting torched. Those 2 seem clueless at times and have the pention for giving up the big play just was the case this past Sunday. Rivers being pressured fires a pass off his back foot before Flyod even breaks out of his route and it lands in his hands, defender…….Andre Goodman….Floyd’s deep touchdown down the right side of field, defender……Cassius Vaughn……although the Safety help was late Vaughn got burnt.

Tebow is going to be great for moral and overall credibility but it’s the Defense that is going to need to step up the most. I agree with Bay that it’s not that big of a concern on whether we win or lose (obviously to me I’d like to win the games we can and should win) but the progression of Tebow as our QB will determine the direction we go come offseason and draft time. Me as well as few others on here believe Tebow is our future QB and I don’t think there is a bone in that kids body that will allow him to fail, he will be successful and this team in a short period of time will return to one of the most successful organizations in the NFL!

  42. fanidaho says:

Tebow is now the starter which I feel is a good thing. We will be able to find out if he can play like many of us thinks he can. I want the wins, but most of all I want to find out if he can play and what we will need to do during the draft. Does he get better and give us a chance to win in the 4th, does he make the team perform better? The next 11 games will tell give us the answers.
