Personnel Department in Preparation Mode

February 6th, 2012 - 9:29am by Gray Caldwell

With the Senior Bowl and other college all-star games in the rearview mirror, General Manager Brian Xanders and the rest of the personnel staff have their sights set on the NFL Scouting Combine.

But before the staff heads to the yearly event, the Broncos will have internal draft meetings to make sure everyone — including the coaching staff — is fully prepared.

“For example, our defensive line coach will get to see all the defensive linemen top to bottom quickly on tape, and we’ll read the character and the evaluation,” Xanders said of the draft meetings. “It gives them a first exposure before they go down to the NFL Scouting Combine.”

But Xanders and his staff aren’t looking solely at the college market — the personnel department is currently hard at work on free agent evaluations and looking at team needs.

It’s something both Xanders and Head Coach John Fox addressed at their end-of-season press conference.

“The biggest thing I think is acquiring talent,” Fox said. “That’s what this business is about: locating and finding the best human talent available and then teaching them to be the best that they can be.”

That’s something the front office is looking to do as free agency and the 2012 NFL Draft draw closer.

“We’re not where we want to be,” Xanders said. “We have to perform better, and so it’s something that we definitely have a plan for. We’re going to execute that plan throughout the offseason.”

This bares mentioning… Stanford had a Great Defense the last few years, and most of this season was played without their best LB…

    FTR!!!

Also worth reading… I hope this guy falls to 25th in the Draft and we can steal him, but it is doubtful…

  5. OrangeTsunami says:

Turtle – I saw that about Dre.. Would love if he was still around for us, but like u said, that would highly doubtful

I live in more of a city atomosphere but when i do venture out to the country its always nice and never taken for granted. I have to say though there are close to no broncos fans out here. I know of one and hes a close friend. After this season and the emergence of Tim Tebow ive seen alot more hop on the bandwagon, its nice to see more Bronco recognition.

    Bay,

I will miss you dearly. You were the first one to welcome me last off season and you tried to teach me some things and I appreciate it. I hope you change your mind or at least change your user name and come back as someone else.

  8. Bronco_Turtle says:

Hi CB… Welcome to the Nuthouse!!!

  9. OrangeTsunami says:

CB – there are quite a few Canadian folks on here, I’m sure you’ll run into them in due time

Shaz – you better not be packing your bags too… ;)

  10. seweatherman1 says:

That cop must have been out for at-a-boy points or something. Less than 20 grams is a misdemeanor anyway, and lying on the floor at somebody’s feet could have been thrown there by any occupant of the vehicle. He (cop) should have just thrown it out of the package on the ground and kicked it in the dirt. Would of saved him an enormous amount of paperwork and time.

  11. Bronco_Turtle says:

He (the Cop) should have just rolled it and puffed it down with a future NFL star!!! ;o) BONG!!!

  12. OrangeTsunami says:

BT – little early in the day to be starting isn’t it?? LOL!

  13. shaztah says:

OT, I said it before that Tim brought me here but the team now has my heart. I love this blog and I am not going anywhere. The only bags I am packing are boxes for moving. I move on March 7th so I will miss the blog for a few days but I will be back. I have made some great friends and some have posted their pictures which was cool.

  14. OrangeTsunami says:

Shaz – good to hear! We need you around to keep all this testosterone in check… LOL! I guess the “packing your bags” reference wasn’t the best seeing you got the big move forthcoming..

  15. Bronco_Turtle says:

OT… it’s never too early (or too Late)!!!

  16. OrangeTsunami says:

Haha! I hear ya buddy.. I don’t partake as much these days, but there is a reason it is prescribed to cancer patients.. I realize that some guys like Kirkpatrick were using recreationally, but I’m sure there are a good number of big ‘ol linemen who do so on Monday to get them thru the day after grinding it out in the trenches.. The best pain killer big Pharma doesn’t want anyone to know about…

  17. OrangeTsunami says:

Hope I’m not crossing the blog line…

  18. DenverCB says:

OT – Your not crossing the line at all. Its something that most people do/have done. I am also in the same boat you are, i dont partake any longer.
When it comes to athletes, Pro or going Pro, its gonna make news. Its upsetting to see somebody who very well may make a name for himself start this way. I am glad that the charges were dropped but he has to keep his nose clean for a while.

  19. OrangeTsunami says:

Yep. After our experience with Perrish Cox, we may need to lay of any CB’s with off the field issues.. LOL

  20. DenverCB says:

I was never a big Perrish Cox fan. I mean I had to cheer him on when he had the ball but never truely liked him lol.
One player I am exited for is Chris Harris. I want him to emerge as a #2 he has exellent takling skills as well as overall covering skills. The undrafted corner, i always cheer for the underdog and he has truely made a name for himself on the field.

  21. OrangeTsunami says:

Agreed, we lucked out big time with Harris.. And at only 22, with limited exposure being undrafted and from a small college program, he will only get better IMO.. With Vaughn and Thompson coming back, we’re not that bad off at corner.. Safety is a different story, seeing that Dawkins most likely retires, and Moore struggling his rookie season.. I think Moore will be Ok, but I think we need to sign a veteran Saftey in FA to replace Dawkins.. Drafting a Saftey would make us too young at that spot, if there is such a thing

  22. OrangeTsunami says:

Even of Dawkins does give it another year, we really need to sign a veteran safety IMO.. A safety with a bad neck is just begging for an injury, and to assume he will stay healthy all year would not be wise IMO.. Not sure if there should be a spot for Bush come next year, we need an upgrade there, and I believe that should be at or near the top of our FA wish list

  23. DenverCB says:

I would hate to see dawkins retire this year, he still has the fire and the determination. Rahim needs to learn to takle for sure and signing a older safety would be key for the backfield. Carter looks like he could fill one of the two spots. Hes shown flashes of ability. Its going to be a strange offseason.

  24. brian_schneider says:

We need size, speed, and strength on the defensive front, which will help our secondary immensely. I think of what our lack of pass rush did for us this season and it was quite embarrassing. We did decent against the rush, but not against the pass.

  25. DenverCB says:

100% yes. we cant keep taking out Miller every play that leaves a huge gap and makes easy quick throws wide open. Getting Bunkley back is big but we need someone who can threaten the backfield and demand 2 oline to stop him. We havent had that and Del Rio is the guy to make that happen for us. IMO he was great pick up and the Orange Crush D is well on its way to be a force to be reckoned with.

    Interesting tidbit:

The Bears have reunited former Broncos QB coach, Jeremy Bates, with Jay Cutler.

Farewell Bay, the UK will miss you…enjoy your rest.

You never know, with a few months off you may decide to come back – no-one would expect you to return to the workload you undertook. Maybe we’ll pull a crazy trade and you won’t be able to resist…?

  28. killerkod says:

Nice to be back! Man, it’s only been a week of blog withdrawl and it feels like forever.

Welcome to the blog CB! I’m from Newfoundland, and actually just got back from Moncton on business. You said you live in the city som I’m assuming it’s either Moncton or Saint John.

Surprised to read that bay just up and left. Thanks for all your contributions man……..doesn’t mean you can’t stop by from time to time and chime in with your thoughts and say hello.

What a great Super Bowl……….really close game that came down to the wire again. Seems as though the typical blow-out games have been left in the past……..where they should stay.

I’m really pumped about this off-season and what this team does to get better. While we’ve got a ton of holes, we also got some exceptional core talent as well. It might not happen next year, but I can easily see this team regaining the status of AFC Powerhouse once again!

    GO BRONCOS!

  29. DenverCB says:

    Hey KillerKod.

Thanks for the welcome, I live in the outskirts of Saint john, East. I go to Moncton every couple months and go to the casino, did you happen to stop in there? Ive been everywhere in the maritimes exept for Newfoundland. Heard it awesome over there. Good to see another Maritime Broncos fan.

  30. killerkod says:

yah, we went to the casino and I was really disppointed. Only thing I play is poker and they only had 1 table open that was full. I didn’t get to play, which was a bummer.

I always joke with my friends saying I’m the only Broncos fan in the province. While I am of course joking, it might not be too far from the truth…….lol

  31. killerkod says:

btw – Newfoundland is not in the maritimes………we’re our own thing and even have the extra half-hour time difference to prove it! hahaha

  32. DenverCB says:

Maritime or not, Its a place i want to visit within a year or two, hit up George street, Kiss the Cod, get screeched in and what have you.

imready said, “Though some of you may not have approved of some of my methods, the primary intent was to change behavior. I tried to do this in numerous ways and was unsuccessful.Manipulating behavior patterns can be done if you can push the right buttons, but there occasionally will be an individual that will not yield to any outside stimulation.”

OC says, this statement is the epitome of the problem with some bloggers, they think it is their job to “manipulate” and “push buttons” to get other bloggers to “yield” to their way of thinking. What a load of krap!

Anybody that wants to come here to manipulate other people’s behavior should really go suck a bag of lemons! Just talk Broncos here and quit trying to change people by pushing buttons but rather change minds by having an intellectual debate.

baylonorcrush was my friend! He was only another opinion based person that was not out to “manipulate” like some terrible people here. Bay only spoke his mind and let others do the same.

imready is the biggest hypocrite on this blog and maybe he should worry about stepping on his lip rather than biting it…

I might not post as much as bay did but I will be here to set you hypocrites in your places when need be, because I am not going anywhere! I also am not a puppet that can be manipulated by” pushing the right buttons”…. Sheesh!

  34. killerkod says:

hahahaha, yah, I’m just razzin ya!

It’s def worth the trip………george street is a freaking blast, especially during the george street festival. Prob the best time of the year to come. It’s usually when the weather is the best as well.

Welcome CB. I`ve never been to the Great White North, but would enjoy seeing some day. I myself live in Colorado Springs and am 1 hour south of Denver. My two favorite rock n roll bands from Canada are Rush and Triumph, awesome music in my book. You`ll enjoy yourself here, loads of fun.
