Passing Camp Under Way

May 17th, 2010 - 11:46am by Gray Caldwell

The Broncos got back to work on Monday, hitting the practice field as a team for the first time in 2010. Players and coaches were energized as the 70-degree weather was perfect to kick off Organized Team Activities.

“I don’t think you could ask for a better day,” Brady Quinn said.

ALL EYES ON THE QBs

Much of the media attention on Monday was focused on — not surprisingly — Quinn and his fellow quarterbacks, including first-round pick Tim Tebow.

The crowd of cameras looked just a big as the first day of rookie camp, most pointed toward Tebow as he ran through drills. As the other quarterbacks participated in the drill, Tebow stood to the side with a football in his hand, going through the motions of dropping back as if he were the one under center.

At one point during practice, the rookie was sent to work with the running backs, throwing passes in the end zone as the backs worked on their route-running.

OFFENSE VS. DEFENSE

For the majority of practice, the offense worked on one field while the defense practiced on the other. But when the horn blew for 7-on-7 drills, the defense tried to use a little intimidation as the group ran to meet the offense.

Shouts of “It’s time!” and “Get ready, we’re coming!” rang out on the field.

Maybe the tactic worked, as the defense made a few plays to start the session. When Quinn stepped in under center, he dropped back and fired a pass for Daniel Graham — but Darcel McBath dove in to break up the pass, much to the delight of his defensive teammates.

Quinn got a little revenge a few plays later, finding space in the defense and dropping in a pass to Brandon Stokley. The connection drew praise from quarterbacks coach Ben McDaniels.

The defense backs were active in the drill. Renaldo Hill snared a deep interception on a pass from Tom Brandstater, and Perrish Cox nearly had a pick in his hands toward the end of the drill but the ball fell to the ground. He still picked it up and ran with it, as defensive coordinator Don “Wink” Martindale reminded him to “scoop!” — the defense always goes after a loose ball, regardless of if the play would have been blown dead in a game.

One of the most interesting scenes of the day came in 7-on-7 as well, when a pass intended for Eddie Royal was tipped by Nate Jones. Royal still had a beat on it and looked to haul in the catch on his way to the ground. At the same time, David Bruton ran in and got his hands on the ball as well. Both players wrestled for possession on the ground until the whistle blew and teammates broke up the play. In the end, it was Royal who came up with the ball.

QUICK HITS

  • It looks like Royal is going with a dark visor look for 2010. At least, he did for the first half of practice today. On one play, Royal ditched the helmet all together — and still hauled in the pass.
  • Royal, Cox, Alphonso Smith and Matt Willis split the duties at kick returner for a special teams drill.
  • After a false start during a drill, Zane Beadles ran a lap around the practice fields.
  • Spencer Larsen, donning a white practice jersey that designates an offensive player, spent the entire session working as a fullback.
  • Check out pictures from the session below. We will post a photo gallery with more pictures this afternoon, as well as top story from the day and several videos from Broncos TV, including practice highlights, an interview with Elvis Dumervil, Head Coach Josh McDaniels’ press conference and a package about the day’s events.

Love the first picture…The rook, The Prime and The Vet.
The last one is good too…the QB’s watching Orton! I love it!!!

      GO BRONCOS 2K10!!!!!!!!!!
      SIGN DOOM

    6. BIGGEST BRONCO says:

CANT WAIT TILL THE SEASON. OH IM SOOOO HAPPY DUMERVIL IS BACK. ALL WE NEED HIM TO DO IS SIGN. WHAT DO YOU GUYS THINK ABOUT OUR SEASON? DO YOU THINK WE ARE PLAYOFF MATERIAL? I THINK SOOO.

    7. footballMANIAC says:

Whether we are playoff material or not largely depends on whether the coaches make the correct adjustments on the defense. We can’t have another collapse. And we’ll need to be much more effective in the running game, especially without Marshall.

    8. DDynasty37 says:

orton’s release is looking crisp in the short video of this morning’s session.

Still not sure why we went and got Quinn since we got the future in Tebow as well. Have to see how the pecking order shakes out before the season starts.

      BRONCOS ’10

    9. strandoftds says:

      SIGN DOOM!!!!

    10. roya1fantasy says:

Everything from now till september is a Tease!! ahhh!! just play football already!!! lol

oh well, can’t wait to see the Broncos bulldoze over the schedual this year. Can’t wait to see DOOM get over 20 Sacks and I can’t wait to see Royal man handle the Raiders like he like he did a couple years back.

      I just cant wait

    11. Orange_Crusher says:

Take a look at the three QB’s throwing motions, there is only one that is not off balance after the ball is released….

When you swing your non-throwing arm at the release of the football it throws you body off balance…. leads to inaccurate passes..

    12. Broncosfolife88 says:

Man I cant wait for some more football Denver style. Good to see the team at work. Cant wait for the season to start, hell Il even take some preseason games.
      GO BRONCOS
Anybody know whatever happaened to DynamicDave?

    13. CrazyBRONCOSfaN08 says:

Eddie looks different with the visor, I like him better with his old look. Good to see DOOM out there … hopfully he gets signed. GO BRONCOS!!!

    14. Big D 44 says:

I just hope Clady and Harris are healthy by September. If everyone is healthy, I feel we will be a team to reckon with. There are just too many unknowns right now to make predictions. Some of these questions are: How is the new D line going to pan out?, Can Wink run the defense like Nolan, or better?, Is the O line going to solve the short yardage woes?, Is knowshon going to rush for 900 yards or 1500 yards?, Can Decker and Thomas have a big impact this year?, Is Eddie Royal going to have a 100 catch season?, Who is going to be the starting QB?.

These are just some of many quesitons. I definitely feel we have the potential to win 11 or 12. Unfortunately, with all of the ?’s and unknowns we could only win 6-8. But I’m an optimist when it comes to my Broncos, so I’m predicting 10-6 or better.

      GO BRONCOS 2010…

    15. west coast says:

So Freakin Excited. Can/t wait for Bronco Football!!!!

    16. mad_orange_devil_27 says:

      I want to be there.

    17. Broncosfolife88 says:

DOOM the new face of Broncos class act players. I mean for real how friggin often does a player sign a waiver just to come to practice with a team he is not sighned with. Add in the fact that he deserves a big contract and you have something you never see in the NFL today. A player who is willing to take the high road and do the right things, a guy who sits back and counts his blessings instead of crying, stomping, and kicking the ball around. While I was a Marshall fan I see the benefit of high character vs just high talent. A class act like Doom, he deserves more than we can give him yet he still sits back counts his blessings and continues to put in hard work. We can all take a lesson from a guy like that I know i am.

      GO BRONCOS, GO DOOM

    18. john89147 says:

I can’t wait for the season to begin!!
I too am a Marshall fan, but I believe the supporting cast will pick up where we left off plus we’ll be better on the ground as well.. I foresee big things for Moreno because of these off season moves..

    19. Broncosfolife88 says:

John- Couldnt agree more, I know alot of people have called for a powerback for those third downs but everyone need to remember Moreno was a rookie. He has had more time to develope and will be better plus the oline if healthy-monstrous

    20. #1NYCBroncosFaN says:

Why are broncos bullishing why doesnt Doom have a contract yet what are we waiting for

    21. BroncoBoy2012 says:

MarshMelo15 thank you. People, we are Bronco fans. Learn the names of the players. For God’s sake Dumervil is a pro bowler. Learn how to spell players’ names right. And for Tony Scheffler (when he was a Bronco), it was obvious he wasnt related to Adam Schefter of NFL Network/ESPN crew. Even tho they pointed that out on the show. I find it utterly pointless…jeez

    22. sndvl says:

Didnt know DJ and big Jamaal were absent from the camp. Just want to point it out that while we were winning back to back superbowls, EVERY single player made it to EVERY single workout, OTA and meeting.

    23. griff77302003 says:

When are the to wr’s from the draft suppose to see the practice field ?

    24. BroncosRmyReligion says:

“Yes. We are working with Gary right now,” McDaniels said. “Nothing imminent, but we’re working together on the thing to try to make sure he’s a Bronco for a long time, and he deserves it.”

      Get ‘er done, lol.

Glad to see they are working on it now.

    25. Orange_Crusher says:

Orton said he doesn’t think about the competition, rather he focuses on competing with himself to get better…

I heard that if you compete with yourself too much you will go blind…lol

    26. Orange_Crusher says:

Josh can’t make it obvious that TT is going to start. He has to let him out perform the other three for a while before the team gels to the idea of letting Tebow lead them…

just a little time.. time for TeboShine!

I LOVE ME SOME DENVER BRONCOS!!!!!!!

    27. weareamr says:

      I know, with all eyes watching, with all ears listening;
      “PAY DOOM”
      or
      “PAY DOOM”
      or”PAY DOOM”
      “PAY DOOM”

      Go Broncos!!!
P.S. lot of heart to sign, “it’s not your fault I hurt myself joining my teammates so I won’t fall behind contract” Love your work DOOM and we all want to:
      “PAY DOOM”
      Go Broncos!!!

    28. royalbroncofan1 says:

      A stable of QB’s

Kyle Orton 4th round draft choice (Bears)
Tom Brandstater 6th round draft choice (Broncos)
Brady Quinn 1st round draft choice (Browns)
Tim Tebow 1st round draft choice (Broncos)

    29. babychamp-broncos^ says:

Whats up everybody I been away from blogging for awhile but I had an interesting theory while I was away. I think during the season somehow all the QB’s we have on the roster will get a significant amount of time to play especially in the wild horses to throw off defenses..for example with orton and tebow in orton can identify the D from the wideout position then return under center like he did against san diego and also have tebow at wideout..flick it over to tebow after the snap so he can launch it downfield to an open royal for a touchdown..its hard to explain but I have a vision in my head..if thats the case we can switch off with quinn and tebow or brandstater and quinn etc…Mcdaniels already proved to have tricks up his sleeve so maybe he may try and pull something off like that but idk just a thought..what do you all think??????????

    30. royalbroncofan1 says:

babychamp-broncos^ — Don’t think we’ll carry 4 QB’s this year. Like your thought process with the Wild Horses. There has been some talk about here on the website, and most feel Tebow will play in that set.
Orton was named our #1 QB however it’s inevitable TT will take over when Coach McD feels he’s ready. Quinn and Brandstater will fight for #2 QB, with the odd man out. Good to see you blogging on here again babychamp-broncos^.
I’m a part timer myself but chime in every now and then.

    31. babychamp-broncos^ says:

Good-lookin out royalbroncofan1…..yeah u right tho I was skeptical about havin 4 QB’s..ppl say orton may be out the door. If he is I believe he will start for someone else. He is far from a bad QB

    32. wanagi says:

Why in the world did DOOM have to sign a waiver???? Out of everyone on our team he has proven, even more now signin the waiver, that he deserves a 7 year atleast 35 million dollar contract…i mean Mr. Bowlen…he worked hard switchin positions…a team player in my eyes…and then be the NFL sack master???…he dont deserve how u are treatin him…Get him signed soon or else youll be sorry..,its not like he is a selfish jerk..like the others u let leave….i’ll take a DOOM..over Cutler, marshall, and Tony shef together…to me he plays with alot of heart like a guy i grew up watchin by the name of RULON JONES…so sign him…

    33. NastyNate says:

Wanagi.. we all know he does deserve the long term deal. but obviously he is above and beyond that..thats why they signed a signed a tender they want to make sure they can focus and give him what he deserves look at the top story he is happy to be a bronco he aint goin any where..

    34. akeem0707 says:

      hello everybody

um im going to start off saying that we will sign doom just let them take their time to give him the right price for his play.
secondly i like to see what this year is going to be like because even though we dont have alot of prime time players i do think we have a better disciplined and a better character all around.(going on a limb and saying 10-6)

um knowshon will be occompanied by buck and idk but im guessing westbrook(rumors have been going around(interesting)new huge line+more diverse group off backs+very very solid group of receivers+the best d in the world=succsess
orton will start tebow only for wild horses quinn in both and i think brandstater goes to practice team or leaves

I STILL BLEED ORANGE AND BLUE LETS GO BRONCOS

    35. baylinorcrush says:

A little prespective for the big cheerleaders on this blog (they know who they are, hahaha) never hurts. This is part of what Krieger from the DP says about the comparing Tebow to Elway madness:

When Elway first arrived on the scene 27 years ago, the fascination was based principally on three things. First, he was controversial nationally because he had forced Baltimore to trade him. Tebow may be controversial politically, but the football world doesn’t really care.

Second, Elway had a howitzer where you and I and Tebow have a shoulder. Long before he became an accomplished quarterback, Elway was a huge attraction because he might uncork a 70-yard rocket at any time. Many people had never seen an arm like that. I know I hadn’t. He was part football player, part Ripley’s Believe It Or Not exhibit. There was little evidence in college, and none Monday at Dove Valley, that Tebow has that sort of rocket launcher.

Third, Elway was the No. 1 pick in the draft, almost unanimously considered the best player available in 1983. The Broncos had never before acquired such a prized commodity. Tebow was the 25th pick in the draft, and a fair number of teams had him ranked lower than that. The closer comparison in Broncos history on that basis is Tommy Maddox, the 25th pick in 1992 as Dan Reeves prepared prematurely for Elway’s departure. Reeves’ pick was called a reach in some quarters, as was Josh McDaniels’ pick of Tebow this year.

    36. baylinorcrush says:

Now the QB’s pecking order is at least underway as Lindsay Jones reports:

Orton was the first of the four quarterbacks to take repetitions in individual drills and in the 7-on-7 work against Denver’s linebackers and defensive backs. He was followed in line by Quinn, then Brandstater and, finally, Tebow.

No surprises so far, I kind of felt Quinn would be ahead of Brandstater myself regardless of his one year experience in our O, not a good sign for him, once Tebow overtakes the third spot, Brandstater looks to be the odd man out.

    37. baylinorcrush says:

And I’m glad sndvl took the time to outline that DJ and J. Williams both were absent on the first day of OTA. Jamal doesn’t bother me so much as DJ, what’s the matter with him, he is starting to get on my bad side, first he elected to stay away for all the off season work outs activities, now he is not here for the first day of OTA, NOT COOL DJ. He better get his head on straight quickly because he will find his way out of Denver quicker than a Raider fan. Maybe that’s what he wants, because even so McD has repeatedly said even so he is not really concerned about it (DJ doing his work outs in Miami) he would rather see him at Dove Valley, DJ keeps doing it his way. You keep that up, you’ll be on my next campaign for who must go. Not joking here, he needs a quick attitude turnaround before I turn on him, just saying.

    38. Orange_Crusher says:

Maybe DJ is the LB from the Broncos that Jacksonville was rumored to be interested in?

    39. SBXXXII..Iwzthr! says:

Has anyone heard anything about Woodyard?

    40. kase78matt says:

i think tebows are future but i hope quinn can figure out what he was doin wrong and eventually be a star for a team i dont hate like the jags or houstin

    41. Yovi21 says:

I am very excited to be a denver fan right now! tim tebow, quinn, and orton…i dont expect us to fall apart if orton gets hurt anymore! (thanks simms) I only wish there were more packages for different QB’s because I’d like to see them all start! Also I am really pumped to see how decker and demaryius do..just watching their highlights makes me happy! i really feel like decker looks alot like Eddy Mac, lets just hope he plays that way! and demaryius looks like andre johnson or brandon marshall…although we shouldn’t expect those kinds of numbers from him this year I’m looking forward to watching him excel to those hights!

Now why haven’t I heard anything out of camp about Knowshon! what are we expecting from him as far as this year is concerned, is he going to play a key role in this offense? and Ayers…is he going to do work for the D this year because I’m getting nervous he might never produce!

Last I really hope we can get eddie the ball this year! he did so well his rookie season and he has what it takes to be a GREAT in this league! so Mcd start throwing the ball to him! ( and orton stop putting it in the dirt! ha I don’t think he cought a pass more than 5yds down field on two feet!) I really think that if the young players on this team step up Denver should have no problem winning the west!!

      GO BIG ORANGE!!!!

    42. Ohio says:

Doom will get his money because he deserves it but that’s sign of a team player, kind of guy you want on your team! Makes you proud to be a Broncos fan when you see a guy who’s in the midst of contract talks show up for the 1st day of OTA’s! Dumervil is a class act and a role model for all those that are affiliated with the Broncos!

    43. 27RIPDWILL says:

Woodyard could avg 10 tckls a game right now!

    44. justin sider says:

wouldnt be supprised to see ortin get traded away mid season when someones starter goes down for the season and watch tebo and quin splt the games untill one prooves to be superior. everybody talking about tebow geting the starting spot and ignoreing the fact that we have quin who had nobody good to pass the ball to in cleavland and is compleatly underrated aswell

    45. justin sider says:

im also shocked toat nobody seems to be excited about Demaryius Thomus, and Eric Decker. those too are just part of the reason why i think ortin will go sooner than later evrybody knows he throws to 1 recever 90% of the time. so why draft 2 new star recevers as well as have roial and gafney. im sure that mc D wants to get the ball out there to the young guys see what there maid of.
