Adams to Participate in NFL Franchising Boot Camp

April 14th, 2013 - 6:43am by Stuart ZaasOther posts by

While this year’s rookie class enters the NFL via the draft this April, Broncos safety Mike Adams will be preparing for life after football.

Adams is one of 21 players – 12 former and nine active – that will take part in the new NFL Franchising Boot Camp April 26-29, 2013, at the Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Mich.

Over the four days, participants will hear firsthand from franchisees, franchisors, professors, former players and executives at the IFA on all aspects of franchising. Carolina Panthers Owner Jerry Richardson, who spent more than three decades as a restaurant franchisee, will open the program as the keynote speaker. In addition, four former NFL players with franchise ownership experience — Angelo Crowell, Don Davey, Tyoke Jackson and Jamal Lewis — will take part in panel discussions.

Ross School professor of business economics Francine LaFontaine, co-author of The Economics of Franchising (Cambridge University Press) and leading academic expert on franchise performance, business creation and survival, serves as faculty director of the program, and joins three other Ross faculty members who will lead program workshops.

Unrein Signs Tender

April 11th, 2013 - 12:08pm by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

This week, running back Lance Ball and tackle Chris Clark have already signed their contract tenders. On Thursday, defensive tackle Mitch Unrein joined that list, singing his exclusive-rights tender.

Unrein has played 30 games, starting two, in his two seasons with the Broncos. He has notched 27 tackles, one fumble recovery and even one touchdown catch in his career.

That touchdown came on a pass from quarterback Peyton Manning, making Unrein the first defensive lineman in Broncos history to catch a touchdown pass.

He originally entered the NFL in 2010 with Houston as a college free agent, but finished that season on Denver’s practice squad, going on to play 14 regular-season games in 2011 and all 16 in 2012.

Cornerback Tony Carter and punter Britton Colquitt were also issued contract tenders in March, but have not signed yet.

Once again, Peyton Manning headed to Durham, N.C., to get ready to tackle a full season of football.

But this time, it wasn’t to rehab. Instead, he brought three of his receivers — Demaryius Thomas, Eric Decker and newcomer Wes Welker — to Duke University to work together in advance of the team’s official offseason conditioning program.

Giants quarterback Eli Manning brought three of his receivers — Hakeem Nicks, Victor Cruz and Louis Murphy — as well.

Via Twitter, here’s an inside look at what the work was like.

In between workouts, the players got a chance to check out one of the most storied venues in college basketball.

Clark Signs Free-Agent Tender

April 10th, 2013 - 12:03pm by Stuart ZaasOther posts by

A day after running back Lance Ball signed his restricted free-agent tender, tackle Chris Clark did the same on Wednesday.

Clark will enter his fourth NFL season in 2013. The offensive lineman appeared in all 16 regular-season games in each of the past two years with the Broncos, along with all three postseason contests during that span. He is one of six Broncos that have accomplished that feat.

Last year he did not allow a sack or commit a penalty. For Clark’s career, he has committed just two penalties and given up one sack in 40 regular-season and three postseason games.

Clark joined the Broncos via waivers from Minnesota on Sept. 5, 2010 after spending the 2008 and 2009 seasons on the Vikings’ practice squad. He entered the NFL as a college free agent with Tampa Bay in 2008.

Broncos safety David Bruton is one of 23 current and former NFL players scheduled to take part in the NFL’s Investment for Impact program this offseason.

The NFL Business Management and Entrepreneurial’s Investment for Impact event will be held from April 18-21 at the University of Notre Dame, which is Bruton’s alma matter.

The program includes keynote speakers and panel discussions featuring academic experts and corporate executives, as well as a business planning workshop, a session matching players with faculty mentors, a “venture fair,” and a trip to the Annual Notre Dame Blue-Gold Football Scrimmage.

“The opportunity to play in the NFL has provided a platform to have an impact on our communities,” said Brady Quinn, a six-year NFL veteran who helped develop the program. “It is my hope that through the Notre Dame Entrepreneurial program, attendees may learn how to invest with an impact for the greater good.”
