Even with a full weekend of minicamp at Dove Valley, Nathan Overbay found time to catch a little baseball at Coors Field.
That’s the kind of necessary sacrifice that must be made for family sometimes. This one came with a chance to hang in the visitors’ locker room at the Rockies’ ballpark and watch the action from a prime seat behind home plate.
With the Toronto visiting the Mile High City for an interleague series, the rookie tight end from Eastern Washington appreciated the chance to catch up with his uncle, Blue Jays’ first baseman Lyle Overbay.
“We’re really close,” Nathan said after minicamp closed Sunday. “He’s like my dad. He’s been there ever since I was born. He kinda raised me with my mom. I talk to him almost every day — any chance I get.”
Nathan, 23, made it out to Coors Field for the first two games of the series — which the Rockies swept. He said he got a chance to hang out with his uncle, who went 2-for-9 with a triple and an RBI in the series, before Saturday night’s game.
Lyle, 33, stopped by the Dove Valley complex Saturday morning for a tour and to meet some of the Broncos’ coaches. However, Nathan was in meetings during the time and didn’t get to play tour guide.
Nathan said having Lyle as part of his support system has been crucial as he tries to make the squad as an undrafted free agent. There are some universal principles that come with trying to break through in professional sports.
“He tells me to just stay positive,” Nathan said. “You never know what’s going to happen, so whenever your time comes just be ready and stay positive.”
Nathan will continue to rely on Lyle as he continues his fledgling NFL career. But most of the conversations will have to come via phone rather than at the ballpark. That’s why he was grateful to the baseball schedulemakers for bringing the Blue Jays to town this week.
Missing the chance to take in more Blue Jays games is another sacrifice Nathan is more than willing to make as he prepares for his first NFL training camp.
“I used to get out and see games [in the summer,]” Overbay said with a laugh, “but I’m a little busy now.”

Well I guess this article shows us we have entered the month off between mini camp and training camp, not being negative about the article just pointing out the slow time we are in now. Hopefully things will pick up with Doom’s signing, one can always hope.
SIGN DOOM, SIGN DOOM, SIGN DOOM, SIGN DOOM, SIGN DOOM,
Go Broncos,
SIGN DOOM, SIGN DOOM, SIGN DOOM, SIGN DOOM, SIGN DOOM.
Well the slow time has arrived.
SIGN DOOM, SIGN DOOM, SIGN DOOM, SIGN DOOM, SIGN DOOM.
GO BRONCOS!!!!!! Prove all the critics wrong!!!!!
Doom finally signed his tender.
No surprises here, NOW SIGN DOOM TO A LONG TERM CONTRACT.
Do we trade for Logan Mankins?
Once again Doom does the right thing, when is it ever gonna pay off?!?!?!?!
To put a face on what you’ve said, here is where the Logan’s thing is at:
Restricted free agent LG Logan Mankins requested Monday that the Patriots trade him.
“I don’t need to be here anymore,” said Mankins, one of the NFL’s top guards. “This is about principle with me and keeping your word and how you treat people.” It sounds like the sides have had no substantive talks about a long-term extension, perhaps because the Patriots don’t believe in investing high-dollar contracts on offensive guards. Despite previous suggestions otherwise, Mankins does not plan to sign his tender and vows to skip training camp.
All I’ll say about that is it saddens me that our team is seemingly taking the Patriots approach in the long term signing of our players, this is definitely not a road I like to see us travel. And by the way why would anyone think we would be willing to sign this guy long term if the Patriots won’t, we just signed another guard long term, Kuper, that in itself is already amazing on it’s own. If they bring in this guy long term and keep delaying the Doom signing, I would be furious. Just my opinion.
NFL network reported that Dumervil signed his tender offer
I mean pay attention how the Patriot players talk of their team, Moss did it earlier among others, now Logan speaks out, and I don’t blame them at all. Like I said I am extremely worried that this is the road we are already on here at Dove Valley, the players are just a stone throwaway from feeling the way the Patriot players do. Please, this is a plea to the front office, realize that the Patriot way worked for a few years only because they won 3 superbowls out of 4 years, but now that they are no longer on top, the players are rebelling. We are not good enough to be on top right now, going the payroll Patriot way is nothing but suicide for our team, players will become disenchanted way sooner than anyone may expect, it is my opinion that some have already gotten there. Big mistake the top brass is making now, listen to McD for his coaching skill, but not for his paying people skills. I know his perfect world is to pay everyone half way equally so as to have multiple good players at every position who play like a team, but it won’t work here now, we are not good enough a team for our top players to make those kind of financial sacrifices. You may sacrifice for the goal of winning multiple superbowls, however you will not sacrifice diddly for the sake of trying to make the playoffs. This is a wake up call to the front office, think about it, we are in the process of Dooming ourselves for good. Just my opinion.
and then chicken little said the sky was falling. how does logan mankins have to do with our front office, Xanders aint from NE neither is Bowlen and they decides who getspaid, not the coach, lol. wolf, wolf, wolf.
psssh, I knew Marshall being a bit of a wild card was part of the reason they didn’t move forward but I knew it was also this new cheap patriot thing we are doing. I am a fan of prove your worth and get paid. Also like I am of keeping your word. Its already began with the broncos, insinuating one thing and doing another. like when bowlen said Marshall was on his way to a pay raise. Sorry to bring up the beast. His gone and talks of him have stopped and I wanted to keep it that way, but his situation kinda aligns with Logans about being cheap and not keeping words. I hope this isn’t what is going on in Dove valley tho, ive been saying it is but hoping it wasnt because we dont know what goes on behind closed doors. As fans unfortunately, all we can do is wait and see how it plays out. TRB out.
Doom has signed his tender.
KFS, I hope you are smart enough to understand that McD wants to build a championship team his way, therefore he tells the front office how he wants to achieve it, and it is all based on having the fewest large contracts as so to have more valuable players at every position. Even so he may not be making any money decision directly, his philosophy on how to go at it indirectly forces the hands of Xanders and Co.
I appreciate your light approach to this, chicken, wolf and things, but to me this is a very serious issue our team is now confronting. But hey, if making fun of things is cool to you, be it, I’m just a bit different, I don’t want to sit here down the road if things take a turn for the worse wishing I would of spoken my mind, so I do it now, and I feel better about it, just me as FTR wouls say.
To clarify, I make fun of things all the time, but not serious matters.
i never believe an owner will screw his team or a player that deserves something cuz his coach told him too. What I honestly believe might be the case, not sure, I remember reading bowlen might sell the team because he was in some sort of financial trouble a couple months back. Maybe he is low on millions, i dont know, but it seems to me a coach should never have that power or you have problems. EX: shanny, holmgren had that power. not sure a 2nd year coach will tell a 25 year owner what to do, and if so then we have bigger problems than we know.
i didnt know speculation was a serious matter.
I guess McDaniels is the brain in our operation, i guess wade phillips tells jerry jones who to pay. No. Owners decide if they want to pay a player and can say f u coach, i want this player here no matter what.
Thanks for the Legwold ref. bay.
SIGN DOOM!
Doom not being signed long term is not speculation, it’s serious business.
And only Jery Jones uses the F word, seriously doubt Bowlen would resort to that, LOL. You’re welcome #1.
im glad doom signed his tender but are why are they waiting for a long term offer? untill they get the rookies signed or what, I figured out of all the fa’s that we had coming up they would try to keep one of them, espically doom and having the impact he does on defense. I could see trading Marshal and shef with the attitude issue’s that were taking place.
doom isnt worried bout it to much y is everybody else jeez… really ni dnt think i heard one person rootin for doom before last year. people act like its so simple to hand out 50 plus million thats serious money maybe they wanna see one more good season out of him b4 they give that kind of money i mean he had one season on top like that they probably wanna make sure its consistant before commiting i would… i really dnt see them letting him go either way so i think everybody should just chill n let wuts gonna happen happen it aint gonna do no good complaining on here ne ways so…
exactly MrDenver, doom aint worried, if not he wouldnt sign tender, and all ive heard mcdaniels say is that they want him here as long as they can
by signing tender he looses leverage, i think he knows he is gettin paod before TC starts
should have read paid
Re-post from yesterday about Doom signing a long term contract:
Oh it will happen, no doubt in my mind, the way it has dragged on is the only problem I have with it, doesn’t make any business sense to me to drag your feet signing one of your best player and role model is all I’m saying, sends a real mixed message to the team, hence reactions like Bailey had, it’s not just me thinking that way, I bet you it’s the majority of the team, bad for morale is my point, even when they sign him not all will be forgotten I’m afraid, just my opinion.
Welcome to the Patriots way of doing business, it will take me a while to get use to it is all, by the start of the season I won’t think about that at all, but now is the perfect time for me to reflect on it. Sorry if it bothers anyone that I speak my mind on it.
yea i think he knows somethings gonna happen soon i mean u think about it they got 2 first rounders they gotta think about and all the other picks they got thats probably another reason its taking so long… i can understand not agreeing wit the way the contract situation is goin but people acting like they the ones not gettin payed or suntin. he will be playing for us this year regardless and if he isnt signed this year it probably will make him play even harder cus its a contract year for him then so…
Glad to see Dumervil signed his tender, now head office should return the favor and pay him…. long term, so I can grab his jersey.
tender = long term contract on its way
have faith and remember that NFL is a business not just a game. making sure everyone gets paid is equally as important as just one player. can’t win with just Doom. Love him but he cant do it by himself!!!
i believe 110% in everything the Broncos organization is doing. and you ask around the league (within the league – not spectators) and Denver’s organization (specifically – Mr. Bowlen) is one of the most respected organization in the league.
BRONCOS…TEAM OF THIS DECADE !!!
Agreed, one of the best organization in football and acting like it most of the time, thing is no one and no organization is perfect and the handling of Doom’s long term contract is proof of that. As Bailey said “I wish things would work out a lot faster than they are” and I couldn’t agree more.
This is more about rookie contracts, but it gives a few as to why it takes so long to get deals done. And remember Doom’s deal isn’t the only one they have on the table at the moment.
http://www.nationalfootballpost.com/Splitting-hairs-on-rookie-deals.html
Oh Logan is upset because he is greedy
The Patriots reportedly had a five-year contract offer on the table for LG Logan Mankins that would’ve paid him $7 million per season.
The offer, presumably made earlier this offseason, was reportedly on the table for “a significant period of time.” The deal would’ve made Mankins one of the NFL’s five highest paid offensive guards. Mankins apparently wants to be the richest guard in the league. On Tuesday, the Patriots are expected to formally lower Mankins’ tender offer from $3.268 million to $1.54 million.
BA, I hear you but since I thought this contract should of been worked out around the trading of Marshall to send the proper message to the team, do good by us we’ll reward you, do bad by us we’ll ship you out, the they’re in the middle of signing rookies now so it’s hard to concentrate on signing Doom holds no water to me at all, the front office got themselves in this predicament, Doom’s deal has no reason to still be on the table, just my opinion.
Got to remember his agent is trying to get the best for him and the Broncos want the best for their team. The two sides are probably to far apart and this stuff takes time. They have to agree on a lot of things to go into the contract. It is hard, and you have to include the rookie contracts as well as you need to be under the salary cap, so they affect the contract. And there is that 30% rule because of no CBA that the contract needs to take into account.
Like I said there is a lot to work out and agree on and that takes time. It will get done but will take time, anyway he is now signed with us for at least this year.
exactly trueon, mr bowlen aint gonna change cuz of a coach
also agree with u BA, we have to try and get best deal for organization not give what the player wants
Oh man there is some good discussion going on here.
Baylino ~ Just to add to your point about the “Patriot Payroll” and where ‘We’ are right now. Players acknowledge this is a buisness and that no one player is above the law. Like a busness, you must build up the momentum through spending large wads of cash for marketing/branding/employment and anything else. Once the business is running at a high level, then you start to look at the margins and decide how you can improve the margins. So you go through a process of looking where you can cut costs without sacrificing the productivity. E.g. outsourcing overseas for cheaper labour.
If a business tries to build itself up on a ‘minimal cost, maximum output’ philosophy, (i) It will take 2-5 times as long to work up to an acceptable level, OR (ii) Go bust.
The Broncos are in the building phase and ‘the Brains Trust’ (B.M.X)need to understand that, which I think they do to some degree. Trying to rebuild a team and expecting them to take paycuts/pay-freeze at THIS stage will only create that undesired friction alot sooner than is really required.
IMO McDaniels is the Mngr Dir, Xanders is the CEO and Bowlen is the Owner. Bowlen will payout contracts based on recommendations from who?? Himself?? The 8-Ball?? Voodoo bones?? NO. He has hired Xanders and McDaniels to go through that process for him and come to him with recommendations. To say that McDaniels has no influence in the process is naive.
BA, I ran businesses for 25 years, I think I understand the ramifications of such large deal as well as an outsider can, however I believe that by dragging it along in an effort to save money they stand to lose much more, a team’s morale for a few bucks saved does not seem to make much sense, and as for the cap, this is an uncapped year, there is no easier time to sign a long term contract than this year because you can load it up heavy up front without hurting your cap down the road. I’ll say that I agree to disagree since I’ve been arguing this all day. You guys think how you want, I do the same and we won’t change or minds anyway, so it’s all cool.
Samoan what up! Can’t wait for Origin tomorrow, Queensland going to make it 5 straight. And I agree with your point.
Though you may be forgetting Joe Ellis, I think he has a decent sized input into the spending of money, Bowlen is the one that signs checks.
samoan, thanks for your last sentence: “To say that McDaniels has no influence in the process is naive”. I don’t mind arguing with folks here, I can stand my own ground, but now and then a little backing is welcome news.
Bay I don’t think they can load it up front because of the 30% rule increase in his salary because of no CBA, look at the Patrick Willis deal.
http://www.examiner.com/x-2712-San-Francisco-49ers-Examiner~y2010m5d5-How-Patrick-Willis-contract-affects-the-signing-of-future-49ers
And I think they will fight over money, I don’t think it is a few hundred maybe a few 10s of thousands or hundreds of thousands. But the agent always wants more and the team can only give so much. And I don’t think the agent cares about team morale they are the ones taking more time trying to get more. And the team isn’t going to say yes to anything because of team morale. I think it doesn’t fact at all in the time of the deal. It is a business after all.
Plus Bowlen doesn’t want to pay out lots of money.
BA ~ DAMN STR8!!! Hahaha Tamana Boo-Hoo, what a joke!!! Man I can’t wait either.. To seal the deal at home would be INSANE!
No worries Baylino. I can understand what Moreno is saying, but ‘still waters run deep’ and there is so much we don’t know. Its through these discussions that we learn more about our beloved organisation.
The process is of governmental proportions, bridging the gap btween expectations is where most of the time is spent.
IS IT SEPTEMBER YET???
well said samoan, its a team process not a one man show
IS IT SEPTEMBER YET???
we all wish that here, lol
Tamana Boo-hoo, whahahah, that is one of the funniest things I have heard. But he has a point, what about Andrew Johns, such a dumby. But QUEENSLANDER! Can’t wait for the game, it helps me get to September haha.
And Samoan you are right, “Its through these discussions that we learn more about our beloved organisation.” so true.
I do think McD has some say, but I don’t think he can say ‘I want Doom for 5 years on 30 mil’, I think that is more Xanders job. But McD has input into what players he would like to keep and get rid of.
Whoops sorry Knowshon not ‘Moreno’ lol same-diff hahaha
Hell yeah damn cut out March, May-August from the calander and Im happy.
We (BA and I) have Rugby League to fill the void, but damn theres nothing like an NFL season to get the blood pumping… unless your married to Scarlett Johansson lol
Haha Samoan, love me some Johansson, yes watching league gets me by, but I can’t wait until the Broncos start playing in sept.
But for us Aussies there is always sport on, soccer, cricket, league, you name it we watch it, except maybe gymnastics haha.
i wish i was ryan reynolds, lol
hey aussie just in case u didnt know i use to go by the handle
TorainATvfan
I think the conversation goes something like this
McDaniels – How about we sign Samoanbronco to a 3 year deal for $4m per year?
Xanders – BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!
Seriously:
McDaniels – How about we sign Elvis to a X year deal for $Xm per year?
Xanders – We may have to take a look at the cap/deal before I could happy with that.
McDaniels – We’ll be fine with the cap as we still have plenty of room and we can also do this and that.
Xanders – Ok, get me all the finer details, and we can go over it before we talk to Pat about it
Or somethingn to that effect
Still remember Joe Ellis, he is the right hand man in Bronco land. And Samoan playing for the Broncos? Interesting, I guess that is why X-man is laughing haha.
The only problem with your scenario is that I think Xanders works out the finer details not McD as that is his job you would think?
ATV = KFS, dude what about, did not know thanks for the heads up, hows it been.
