On Thursday night, rookie quarterback Brock Osweiler will get his first taste of live NFL action, and he knows exactly how he wants it to go.
“As a quarterback in the preseason, my goals would be to move the offense, get first downs, have a high completion percentage, score points when we’re in the red zone and don’t turn the football over,” he said.
The Broncos and Bears kick off at 7:30 p.m. CDT. For Osweiler, it couldn’t come soon enough.
“I couldn’t be more excited,” he said. “We’re going to a great venue, Soldier Field, playing against a great football team. I think we’ve had a great start to camp and we’ve done quite a few things very well. I’m looking forward to the opportunity and seeing what we can do in a game situation.”
Osweiler feels OTAs and camp have prepared him for Thursday night’s contest, but that doesn’t mean he’ll be without some welcomed pregame jitters.
“I think you’re always going to have those butterflies,” Osweiler said. “Before any football game, no matter how long you’ve been playing. I’ve always been told the day that the butterflies don’t show up is the day that you need to retire. I’m sure there will be a few of them. It will be more excitement than anything else.”
The preseason for Osweiler will be another learning experience as he continues to adapt himself to playing at NFL speed. During a two-minute drill at Tuesday’s afternoon practice, he encountered his most recent speed bump – and he learned from it.
“For example, (Tuesday) I threw an interception in the two-minute drill,” Osweiler said. “That’s a huge learning play for me. It was a situation where I had to throw hot, there were some free rushers coming off the edge. That’s a hard situation in the gun because you have to be able to get the football, try to get the laces and put an accurate ball out there real quick. So now I learned really how fast that will take place in a two-minute situation. And now I can rep that throughout practice drills.”
Better yet, Thursday could give him a chance to rep that in a game.
“I’m just looking forward to getting on the field and slinging the football around a little bit,” he smiled.

I’m not saying I didn’t have dreams of Cowher being our coach, but I believed him when he said he wasn’t coming out of retirement.
Good point mello – It will be interesting to the the younger players and CFA’s who are working hard to have a shot at making the squad. CFA Steven Johnson has been doing well. Can’t wait to see him, Bolden, and Derek Wolfe!!
Haven’t talked to you in quite sometime! Wow your kids’ already 8 mos old.. time flies.
I remember when you mentioned you were in the family way.
For the right money? he’d have been there! Not saying Dun gy is primarily money motivated but he’s a young healthy guy. You can only vacate for soooo loong.
No, DB. Dungy is not coming out of retirement. He is focused on his foundation, announcing, etc. You forget that I’m a Colt fan too.
For the right money? if we gave all our money to a coach we wouldn’t have Peyton Manning. LOL
I should have said Cowher or Dungy not and lol
Cat I think that Dungy may have came out of retirement but I also dont because he wants to spend more time with his family as well. Cowher I think will come out eventually.
Cowher was struggling with the pressure of being a head coach. He needs more time off. Tony still hasn’t recovered from the loss of his son. JE and company would have had to make presentations to let those guys know that the Broncos couldn’t live without them. Hard-nosed – schmooozing! Yep – that’s what it takes.
Cat money for the coaching staff comes from elsewhere not our Cap room. We wouldve still had that money.
I disagree, for the right guy, the networks can pay just as much, if not more. And career longevity is greater in the booth. Not to mention much less stress. Once you go in the booth, there’s no coming out.. Lol
Oh ok. I didn’t know that AB. But seriously. Tony Dungy has been asked many times if he’s coming out of retirement and he says no. After what happened in his family, I am not surprised.
I think Cowher is gonna be a head coach again, just didn’t want to do it last year.
cat- thanks for sharing some excerpts from the book you have. Robert Irsay was a terrible owner.
Don’t blame Elway for not wanting to play for him.
Bill Polian was an excellent GM. Built a great Team in Buffalo.. ( 4 straight SB’s). Had a great resume by the time he landed with the Colts. A few of those players from Buf are hall of famers now, Kelly, Thomas, Bruce Smith.
Cat thats why I dont think he will for a while but eventually I think he will feel that fire and come out even if its for a few years. He would be a good coach for a young team or a team who has the talent but just needs a coach to get to the next level.
I’m not in the mood to complain about John Fox at the moment. After changing the entire offense three times in a row I’m just going to give him the benefit of the doubt.
Exactly, rbf1! That’s why Peyton felt differently about going to Indy.
Gruden is another great young coach, who may never coach again..
I like Fox and think he was a good choice because we needed a defensive smart HC IMO especially with JE coming in to become part of the FO.
For the ones who can’t get the game on TV live tonight, just log on to Newsradio 850 KOA and listen to the game for free.
My pre 2012 season thoughts:
Fox is going to be well out of his comfort zone due to our less than desirable running game.
He has always relied on that his entire coaching career and with Hillman hurt, Moreno likely soon to follow and McGahee who cannot carry the 16 game load as proven last year, it will be even thinner at the position than it was last year which I always thought wasn’t addressed enough in last off season.
And here we go again….
I guess they are thinking Manning ball, running only needed as a distraction, but that will be a very difficult pill to swallow for Fox, much less adapt to it.
So it won’t be easy or as dominating a year as some think now, lots of holes on D too, always mainly at LBs as usual. My 10-6 prediction looks optimistic right now, let’s hope the year brings us health on the team overall and they might just pull it off.
For now enjoy the “record wise” worthless pre-season, but all so neat for us Bronco fanatics to find out if we got any gems we didn’t know about, or whether the ones that we think we got really got it, Wolfe?
We’ll see. I don’t see him as a flip flopper in that decision, but I guess never say never.
There isn’t a coach on the planet that wouldn’t do almost anything to be in Foxxy’s shoes right now. Too bad that wasn’t the set up when we were coach hunting. Obviously, Manning ranked Fox pretty high or PM wouldn’t have come here. But, had Dungy been in Denver there would n’t have been any other choice for Manning.
OK I can not stand it. I can not belive that I just paid NFL network $22.00 for preseason games on the web. But I had to. This little Bronco sat on my shoulder all day wispering PAY FOR IT!! PAY FOR IT! YOU KNOW YOU WANT IT. ITS CUTLER VS THE NECK!!! Its CHAMP vs Brandon!!! PAAAAYYYY!
So I did. And I am watching it in my office.

OT Gruden I dont think will. I think he likes what he does.
OT I like Gruden. I really do. He always has something nice to say about everybody, which is better than watching Phil Simms complain about the Broncos every week.
Very well said at the end Bay. Couldnt agree more. Nows the chance to see if they got it or not.
Anyone going to be watching the Faider KC and SD games? I am. I want to see Poe for KC and Ingram and Reyes for SD and to see all of the Faiders problems lol
FTR! Bronco power man! I wish you could get it for free! Next week is on ESPN isn’t it?
Hey Bay!!! I was thinking about calling on you this morning. You gave exactly what I wanted. Much appreciated. (You still don’t focus on the oline as much as is called for – olines make or break QB’s!!!) But good post!!!
Gruden loves his work for the FFCA (Fired football coaches association as he calls it)
Yo Bay!!
FTR
I can just disagree with everything Bay said (except the last sentence). ;-P
Cat I am not sure if ESPN has the game on. I will check though.
AB– San Diego is on ESPN and if I check in it will really only be to see how our female ref is doing, to be honest!
bay – don’t really see any holes on D with the exception of the LB’s and really it’s Will LB. Mays will do better under JDR’s tuteledge. Secondary was solidified with the additions of Porter and Florence who can play man to man or zone. Squiid also back and Bolden is young but talented.
Yea Cat I know. Lol So happy it ends an hour or so before the Denver game starts up here. I get to watch both.
I am out on a beer run before watching the game you all play nice.
Peace out

I guess I could see Cowher come out, but that’s a tough gig to give up for the rigors of the NFL..
I concur about the run game (or lack there of). It’s been a major concern of mine, and I really hope we sign a RB with some history of durability. If we can’t run the ball, the whole things breaks down IMO, and I’m not sold on our current personnel as it stands today. I would love nothing more than to be wrong, but I just can’t shake my concerns about it..
Can I complain? Why the heck are they asking if I’d want to choose between watching Peyton Manning or Bob Griffin?
You tweet me then, AB if she’s doing a good job!
I would hope so, you’re from Venus, I’m from Mars, LOL.
DB, not overly concerned over the O line here, Clady is back at protecting the blind side of the QB, that will be a huge improvement, plus that line on and off has been one of the young and bright spot of our team, some people have been way too harsh on them.
I’m thinking Mays will play a lot through preseason. I think he’s still fighting for a job. He’s one who can play the hero or the goat with equal ability.
Good ol’ Mays. Not my favorite, but not many other choices. I’m looking to see how he does.
rbf1, I still see a weakness on D up front in the middle, in the middle at LBs of course, safety had to be shored up of late because no one trusts on the improvement of our now second year players Rahim and Carter. Bottom line I believe we truly upgraded mostly at CB, just me.
Clady’s experience and ability is a bright spot in my day as well. And I think this Oline will excel with Manning under center. If the defenses start swatting Manning passes away like they did with Orton – I think some youngsters on the Oline might want to start working on their resumes.
Well enjoy the game you all!
I dont htink i need to state my views on Mays…..
Cat will do.
GIve the Mrs. our best!!!
I love Mays – but he is obviously going to have to develop into a more well rounded player. JDR is just the ticket and the preseason is the likely proving ground. Coming to a preseason game near you!!!!
LOL @ AB!!
Im so anxious for the game/s tonight I actually watched the USA womens soccer match to hold me over lol
Cat DB and anyone else out ther elurking about, what player are you looking foward to watch the most and keep a close eye on? Other than Manning DMT Decker Tamme Miller Domm Bailey and McGahee.
Im looking forward to seeing Os and Robinson I hope they see snaps together.
I love seeing Tom Jackson (-:
NFL.com has lost its every loving collective senses concerning football. What??? Here’s the sub title –
