Osweiler Ready to Go

August 8th, 2012 - 1:23pm by Sam Davis

On Thursday night, rookie quarterback Brock Osweiler will get his first taste of live NFL action, and he knows exactly how he wants it to go.

“As a quarterback in the preseason, my goals would be to move the offense, get first downs, have a high completion percentage, score points when we’re in the red zone and don’t turn the football over,” he said.

The Broncos and Bears kick off at 7:30 p.m. CDT. For Osweiler, it couldn’t come soon enough.

“I couldn’t be more excited,” he said. “We’re going to a great venue, Soldier Field, playing against a great football team. I think we’ve had a great start to camp and we’ve done quite a few things very well. I’m looking forward to the opportunity and seeing what we can do in a game situation.”

Osweiler feels OTAs and camp have prepared him for Thursday night’s contest, but that doesn’t mean he’ll be without some welcomed pregame jitters.

“I think you’re always going to have those butterflies,” Osweiler said. “Before any football game, no matter how long you’ve been playing. I’ve always been told the day that the butterflies don’t show up is the day that you need to retire. I’m sure there will be a few of them. It will be more excitement than anything else.”

The preseason for Osweiler will be another learning experience as he continues to adapt himself to playing at NFL speed. During a two-minute drill at Tuesday’s afternoon practice, he encountered his most recent speed bump – and he learned from it.

“For example, (Tuesday) I threw an interception in the two-minute drill,” Osweiler said. “That’s a huge learning play for me. It was a situation where I had to throw hot, there were some free rushers coming off the edge. That’s a hard situation in the gun because you have to be able to get the football, try to get the laces and put an accurate ball out there real quick. So now I learned really how fast that will take place in a two-minute situation. And now I can rep that throughout practice drills.”

Better yet, Thursday could give him a chance to rep that in a game.

“I’m just looking forward to getting on the field and slinging the football around a little bit,” he smiled.

Yall, that tune needs alot of tuning. I wrote each part in 3 minute intervals, kinda on the fly. I`m missing comma`s and and stuff like that, so it looks messy at the moment. I need to add the chorus of Take Me back to Mile High more in the song so it flows better. I`m a typical Rocker. HaHa!!

  3. strandoftds82 says:

Like a kid in the candy store my Broncos friend. Well I`m off to do lunch with a pal of mine. See you guys and gals later.

  4. strandoftds82 says:

To be added and continued. I`m thinking of adding Shannon Sharpe in there somewhere as to saying (And theres Shannon Sharpe the Hulk brother going and tapping on his drawings signs after his Hulkster Touchdowns)!. Its an idea anyway. Gotta throw in some Sharpe And Eddie mac in there and show them some love! Laters.

  5. tlcat06 says:

Now that you mentioned it you have to add Shannon and Eddie… must put in Rod Smith as well? Is TD in there? Just tap your cleats bro, take us back to 1998!

  6. DaddyBronc says:

R U gonna sing and produce this one yourself Strand or will you leave that to KKod?

Here some of this Elway stuff from this book OT (I’m still trying to find the rest): “With the Colts’ recent history of nonachievement, hoever, we were adviced more than once that Peyton should make it clear he wouldn’t sign if they drafted him. That he would ‘pull a John Elway.’ The Colts were also on the bottom when Elway was eligible from the 1983 draft, and he threatened to sit out a year and play pro baseball if they picked him first. Elway’s agent used a vaguely familiar example of what can happene when a player gets mired on a losing team. He said, ‘I don’t want John Elway to be the next Archie Manning.” Eventually, as I understood it, a major factor was Elway’s father, then the Colts’ head coach. But things had changed since then. The Colts were still struggling, but Kush was long gone, and Jim Mora, a man I’d gotten to know and respect when he coached in New Orleans, was the new head coach. Jim Irsay had taken over for his father as club owner and hired Bill Polian as the new president and general manager. Polian had done great things with the Buffalo and Carolina franchises. Besides, Peyton really didn’t have a team he preferred over the others. He wasn’t a ‘fan’ of any of them. He knew Mora, too, and liked him. Obviously the Colts were feeling the same about Peyton, or at least about Peyton and Leaf. And Peyton really didn’t want to go the Elway route. He wanted to make a more positive entrance into the league. He talked to Elway about it. John reminded him that the Colts drafted him anyway, then traded him to Denver.” (Thank you Jesus!)

This is word for word what Peyton said about Elway OT:

“Somebody once said in comparing John Elway with Michael Jordan and Wayne Gretzky that Elway wouldn’t match up as an athlete. My dad would argue otherwise, but from a slightly different angle. He thinks Elway might have been the best quarterback ever, not only because of his competitiveness and his intelligence and his strong arm, but because of his great courage and escapability–athleticism on a call in a crisis situation. You’d see him in the pocket under heavy pressure, sometimes scrambling to buy a few more seconds but waiting, waiting, waiting until the l ast moment to get the ball off, ALWAYS giving his receivers maximum time, not just because he instinctively knew what to do, but because he’d learned the hard way how close he could come to getting hammered while doing it. You can’t possibly see that kind of athleticism in those agility drills or private pass and catch sessions.

What Elway did athletically, Gretzky and Jordan couldn’t have done. Good quarterbacks don’t get enough credit in that area. No, I take that back. They do. But you have to pay attention. Bear Bryant once said that Joe Namath was the best athlete he ever coached. He didn’t say the best quarterback, he said the best athlete. Archie Manning, old Dad, was chosen Mississippi’s “greatest athlete” in 1992. Not the best quarterback. Not the best football player. The best athlete.”

I’m not lying when I say that Elway is a huge reason why Peyton Manning is in Denver. This family has loads of respect for him.

Good posts Cat – chalk up a huge one for the Lady!

My lady just attempted to feed me cole slaw for lunch. Ranks up there with pink tofu and that candy coffee that has kids going gaga over these days. No thank you very much!!! LOL

  10. DaddyBronc says:

If Elway had gone to the Colts – would Manning have landed there?

  11. tlcat06 says:

LOL I love cole slaw man, can’t help you there. I won’t even eat tofu. I’m a meat a potatoes kind of gal.

No, DB. He wouldn’t have. But then we wouldn’t have gone to 5 Super Bowls with Elway and won two so I’m not gonna go backwards, I’m going to keep looking forward!

  12. CARAMELLOO says:

Man I purchased the NFL Live Preseason thing so I can watch our Broncos play and I can’t waittttttttttttttttt!!

  13. OrangeTsunami says:

Thanks Cat, I have a new level of respect towards the Manning family after reading that. Elway was extremely athletic, and people tend to forget about his baseball prowess (we all saw Jordan attempt to play). Top it all off with an Economics degree from Stanford Univeristy. That’s not just any University, and that’s not your run-of-the-mill degree. Add it all up, and he’s unmatched by anyone IMO, and it’s clear that jealously is what fuels his critics.

  14. tlcat06 says:

I was born in Broncos Country! ♥ Under Orange and Blue sunsets! I feel the THUNDER of the ORANGE CRUSH beneath my feet! Mile High Salute my fellow Broncomaniacs, football officially starts tonight! GO BRONCOS!

  15. DenverOrange says:

Let’s Go Broncos!!! Been waiting to long for this I just can’t wait.

  16. tlcat06 says:

OT-exactly! I didn’t know all that before I read that book and there’s more in there, but it’d take me forever to retype it all. Honestly, my love for Peyton Manning grew in strides after I read that stuff. I am a Bronco fan first and foremost, but I never KNEW all the things that Peyton had the opportunity to do or people he got to meet. Man, the guy went out on a boat with Walter Payton at the Pro Bowl… he has not had a normal childhood at all and knowing all the football stars was just something he was used to. He was always my favorite, but after reading his book I respect him more. Don’t get me wrong. He’s human and he’s not on a pedestal because that isn’t healthy, but he is pretty amazing.

  17. tlcat06 says:

John Elway is not like any other former player to help out his former team. He has the credentials to be successful and he’s very smart in the decisions he makes, whether they are popular or not. ALWAYS has.

  18. DaddyBronc says:

Cat – we need our heroes!

  19. tlcat06 says:

I think so, DB. Those who do their best in every aspect of who they are help us to strive to do the same. It’s especially helpful when they have the same beliefs you do.

  20. DaddyBronc says:

A hero is just a person on a pedestal – someone you look up to – not as perfect but as excelling in respect. Splain yourself….???

  21. OrangeTsunami says:

Elway’s timing was also impeccable, with the team reeling after the debacle that was McDaniels.. We’ll see what happens, but I couldn’t be happier with him in charge. Of course he needs to show results, but he’s got a pretty long leash in my book.

  22. DaddyBronc says:

    excelling in ‘some’ respect

  23. DaddyBronc says:

Bolen seems prone to want to give ‘one man’ “keys to the kingdom” – as it were. Paid off with Shanny. Failed with Mcd. Elway doesn’t seem to have the nasty negotiator thing going on that makes great GM’s what they are. The verdict is still out in my opinion. He’s an obvious improvement over X.

  24. tlcat06 says:

I don’t think so DB. My dad is my real hero and I’d measure any guy I’d ever want to marry up against him, but I think the only guy I have on a pedestal is my dad.

Peyton Manning is my football hero I guess. He makes mistakes, says the f word, does things that bother me so I can’t quite put him on a pedestal. I’m trying to get away from doing that because it’s not healthy. BUT I still can’t measure other QBs against him because there is NO ONE like him. IMO

  25. OrangeTsunami says:

You might have a point on the hard nosed negotiator bit.. The jury is still out on that one IMO, as JE just took over for Xanders, but that’s one thing you definately need in this league.

  26. Royalbroncofan1 says:

What’s up Caramelloo – LBF and I were talking ’bout you last night! Good to see you back on here bro!!!

  27. DaddyBronc says:

Cat – you are fortunate – great Dad’s are hard to come by. I commend you for holding that top spot for your dad.

  28. OrangeTsunami says:

I’m still convinced that Xanders was the one in charge of structuring the trades during the draft, and the soft return is was what led to his release (Xanders is still unemployed).

  29. tlcat06 says:

I am DB, I couldn’t be more fortunate. Just realized the other day that my dad and my mom both grew up without their dads and how hard they’ve both worked to make sure that I didn’t have to do that. I thank God for it every day!

OT-I dunno. He did land the best free agent in all of NFL history… I think he can shmooze with the best. ;-)

  30. DaddyBronc says:

I tend to think that JE, had he been a bit more “hard-nosed”, might not have ended up with Fox and might have still gotten Manning but for a little less money.

  31. tlcat06 says:

POURING in Chicago at the moment! Awesome! LOL! Nothing better than a slippery football game!

  32. tlcat06 says:

Might not have ended up with Fox? Hm… Explain. Pretty sure articles I read said he wanted Fox.

  33. DaddyBronc says:

Hard to throw a wet football – we might not get to see Manning at all.

  34. OrangeTsunami says:

You give DB an inch, and he takes a mile (high)…

    :P

  35. DaddyBronc says:

There were better choices on the board. Fox is alright. A very serviceable coach but certainly not in Bellichick’s league – or Shanny’s for that matter. (Though Shanny is mentally ‘over-it’ and not fully invested like he was in ’97 and ’98.) I rank Fox as a solid, dependable back-up. Frankly, I would have ranked him higher coming into Denver than I do now. I guess time will tell.

  36. DaddyBronc says:

What are you on me for now? LOL You get that Bronco pack yet OT?

  37. CARAMELLOO says:

Royal what’s up bro and how have you been. I drop by everyday but a little 8 month old Jr. Broncos puts my commenting on hold as he wants to test his motor skills. So excited about tonight for the simple fact the Orange n Blue are back in action. Really looking forward to watching our 2nd and 3rd stringers this preseason. We all know that a team is only as good as their backups and back backups.

  38. tlcat06 says:

    DB, name the better choices.

AND! I bet Manning plays in the rain. He is more excited than any of us to play football again.

  39. DaddyBronc says:

I gues you are right OT – I spike the blog a little and the place goes silent.

  40. alaskanbronco06 says:

    Whats up bronco homies??????

ITS GAME NIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Even though its preseason WHO CARES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  41. DaddyBronc says:

Manning would play – no doubt – but injuries peek in the rain. It would be irresponsible for the coaches to play him in bad conditions. My opinion.

  42. OrangeTsunami says:

Not yet, pretty curious myself. That whole contest thing is pretty cool.

  43. DaddyBronc says:

    Cowher – Belick -

  44. tlcat06 says:

Hey, I did not leave by choice. In all my excitement I forgot to eat today. Wondered why I was shaking…

  45. CARAMELLOO says:

alaska I agree, football is football. Especially when we can watch our team play. How’s the pregnancy going?

  46. DaddyBronc says:

    Dungy

  47. alaskanbronco06 says:

I wanted to get Cowher and Dungy as HC.

  48. tlcat06 says:

DB– dude. Cowher said he wasn’t coming out of retirement. I don’t like Belick so I’m okay without him. Listen, if we had had Peyton last year it would’ve been different. But with Orton and Tebow I don’t think so.

  49. tlcat06 says:

I looooooooooooooove Tony Dungy, but he is not coming out of retirement.

  50. DaddyBronc says:

Haha – Cat – eat please! Can’t have you collapsing in the middle of #1 pre-season game!!!
