Oshikoya Earns Award

March 3rd, 2011 - 3:49pm by Gray Caldwell

The Broncos training staff is raking in the awards this offseason.

In addition to Head Athletic Trainer Steve “Greek” Antonopulos receiving the Fain-Cain Award, as announced yesterday, Assistant Athletic Trainer Corey Oshikoya (above, right) was named the AFC Tim Davey Assistant Athletic Trainer of the Year by the Pro Football Athletic Trainers Society.

Oshikoya is the inaugural recipient of the honor, which recognizes one assistant athletic trainer form each conference.

The award is named after Tim Davey, a 33-year NFL veteran employee who worked as an athletic trainer for the New York Jets and in the league’s game operations department before his passing in 2010.

No need for a record sndvl .. you were anti mcd number 1 lol which at times made u public enemy number 1.

Yea he got us John Lynch. Kennoy was drafted. Just talking about free agency. John Lynch was pretty much over the hill already. Like Dawkins. Not like Atogwe who is still 29. I remember shanny getting us guys like Marquan Manuel however lol. Kennoy is just 33 can u believe it. guess he has just been out of football pretty much since he left us. Funny how guys just fade into oblivion.

The guy i did like at safety for us was Eric Brown. Now he could hit like crazy. he probably wouldnt survive in this day and age of the NFL. I remember a hit on a packers WR where he virtually took his head off. Nowadays that would be hitting a defensless reciever. another guy that faded into oblivion

  4. sndvl says:

Is there anything that Tim Tebow cannot do? National champion. Heisman Trophy winner. Mohel . Put him up against the IBM super computer on “Jeopardy!” and I am taking the lefty.
Turns out we can add golfing to the list of things that he excels at. And this is getting annoying.
Tebow teamed with former Jets’ LB Jason Taylor , Kenny G and Jack Nicklaus at the Honda Classic Pro-Am on Wednesday and apparently put on quite a show. Though he plays sparingly — a phrase that must thrill the average duffer who misses one week at the range only to watch his handicap triple — Tebow flexed his pipes and outdrove the 339-yard par-4 first hole. In fact, his drive landed on the green and rolled off according to Golfweek (via Yahoo! Devil Ball golf blog ).
But don’t despair, Tebow did three-putt for a par to prove that he is indeed human. And to be honest, it did make me feel a little bit better. Hopefully it humbled Tebow a little bit too, so he doesn’t make a foolish run at professional golf when he retires like Jerry Rice . And that’s an interesting question, head-to-head in golf, who do you have, Tebow or Rice?

Since the link didn’t copy right. Sorry y’all

  5. milehighmagic88 says:

As much as I like Tebow, I gotta take that super computer from jeopardy in a game of trivia, LOL.

  6. milehighmagic88 says:

And I’m sure many people have been talking about this all day but I just got on the blogs so I wanted to give my two cents. The fact that we released both Jamal Williams and Justin Bannan today to me is a big hint that we will definitely be drafting either Fairley or Dareus with our #2 pick. I could be wrong still of course, it’s been known to happen, but seeing as how we released 2 veteran interior defensive lineman makes me think that will be the biggest point of emphasis for our front office in the draft.

  7. sndvl says:

Forgot about Eric Brown. Wow, today has definitely been a trip down ‘where are they now’ lane!

  8. sndvl says:

    88,

Like Ken Jennings, I too welcome our new computer overlords…

  9. Mikeyb1203 says:

Man Tebows work ethic is so desirable, I hope the other player cooperate with him he might be a threat next year if he gets his timing with the receivers down,

  10. sndvl says:

Oh yeah, I like the Vickerson signing! Him and Thomas. With Dareus/Fairley….baylin should be feeling mighty happy right about now!

  11. Borrachazo C.R says:

Yeap! With this move we are staring at DT with that 2nd pick, I just don’t see us taking Peterson anymore by any chance… I guess at this moment would be a mistake to get a CB on that spot! Damn, I though Bannan was playing at average level in the DL(in a below average DL), better than most of the other guys for sure… And we realesed him? I hope Fox knows what he’s doing…
Get Dareus!!!!! I’m on Baylin’s bangwagon all the way with this moves…

  12. Borrachazo C.R says:

I hope PP ends up being a bust or something LOL!! I wouldn’t like if he becomes a top of the line corner knowing we were in the perfect spot to take him… That would be SAD!!! Damn Foxy, LOL!
Your are the pro-coach, not me… lead us to the right path!

  13. baylinorcrush says:

Glad I went to bed, didn’t miss anything but the signing of Vickerson which I’m glad for.

So I imagine the sun has risen again today even so I can’t see it in this overcast day here in around Austin. Even so all talks of trades, acquisitions, cuts and whatever team/players transactions you can think of has now come to an end I guess life does go on in the rest of the world, LOL.

All that has any bearing now is talks about the draft, the only thing that will go on as scheduled, good think it’s not happening this weekend, or by Monday we really would be done with everything….

  14. baylinorcrush says:

Legwold has been losing me during this pre draft period, like his lengthy article about how we might be interested in guard who could play tackle Danny Watkins with our #36 pick!?!?!?!

    Whatever…

However he seems to regain consciousness in this following article when he says:

Certainly the Broncos would like more draft picks than the six they have, but trades will be difficult if the draft is held during a lockout because then picks can only be traded for picks — no current players could be involved.

And all of that being said, the teams that succeed in the draft long-term rarely trade down in the first round. The Steelers, for example, have done it just twice in the last 41 drafts, and one of those was to move down to take Ben Roethlisberger.

Teams win with blue-chip players, who are usually found in the upper tier of the first round.

I agree all heartily and to be frank, whether I listen to Fox or Elway, I never get the slightest inclanation that we are looking to trade down. Of course here and there they will tell you that anything is possible but more than once I have heard them saying nothing but that they would make sure to pick the right player with the #2.

Which brings me to another point I would like to make.

Elway has said many times that they could not miss on this draft, specially with the first pick. And here is my point:

There are only two players this year worthy of the top ten picks who give you absolutely no chance to miss, Peterson and Dareus. That’s it in my eye. And with the developments of signing Bailey and releasing Williams and Bannan, it is now about as clear as day that Dareus is the man they are looking for, at least in my world.

And I have been trying to lead that charge with 88 for quite a while now, it just feels nice when it seems as if things just might go your way. We won’t know for sure until the end of April, but I like where things are heading now, and sndvl is right, I feel pretty darn good about it, so far anyway.

It’s just like when freak30 told me who I want in the draft is way different from who we will pick and he wanted to know who I thought we would pick. I simply answered him who I want that’s who I think we’ll pick. I have been very fortunate in having an excellent track record here getting what I ask for, call it dumb luck or whatever, but why change now? Dareus all the way!

  15. baylinorcrush says:

  16. baylinorcrush says:

Very sorry to see how hard Bannan is taking his release, and understandably so, it’s just a money thing buddy, don’t take it personally. I know, it’s easier said than done:

“I’ve never been so blindsided,” Bannan said. “I’ve never been so confident that I held up my end of the bargain. I did my job. I gave it everything I had. It broke my heart. I want to stay in Colorado. I love the people. I know I’m going to stay in that community. I’m just not going to be able to work there.”

It breaks my heart for you too for whatever it’s worth, you were indeed better than most on that line…

  17. baylinorcrush says:

In fact it was all about money:

Bannan, who turns 32 next month, signed a five-year, $22 million contract with the Broncos just last year. The Broncos called him Wednesday to offer him two options: A severe pay cut, or his release.

The team also gave him less than 24 hours to consider it. After deciding to decline the Broncos’ massive salary reduction, Bannan was released to free agency, where he already has drawn serious interest.

  18. baylinorcrush says:

    About the Dline:

And on top of Williams and Bannan gone, UFA Ronald Fields will also be gone.

  19. baylinorcrush says:

It’s funny the silly things you have to do to cover all the bases, including the Triumvirate:

Broncos front-office executives John Elway, Brian Xanders and coach John Fox arrived at the team headquarters Thursday prepared to pounce on the free-agent market if a new CBA was struck by 10 p.m.

While there were front-office meetings at Dove Valley deep into Thursday evening, no free-agent visits were arranged and no players were signed. The league has embargoed teams from signing players who are scheduled to become a free agent until a new CBA is reached.

  20. baylinorcrush says:

I honestly have no clue what that 24 hour extension is about other than the mediator and attorneys from both sides asking for it to suck more money out of it…

    But the bottom line is:

Another sign an agreement is not imminent is Broncos owner Pat Bowlen did not attending the mediation sessions Thursday. Bowlen is co-chair of the owners’ labor committee, along with Carolina’s Jerry Richardson, who also did not attend the bargaining sessions Thursday.

It’s unlikely a labor agreement will be reached without the presence of management’s labor leaders.

  21. baylinorcrush says:

Well, you guys are up to speed to my world, LOL. Your turn…

  22. baylinorcrush says:

Oops, found another thing of interest to us Bronco fans. If we are wanting to unload Orton when a new cba is reached, this is good news:

The Vikings and Tarvaris Jackson both wanted to move on. The team took another step toward severing ties with Jackson after five often turbulent seasons Thursday by electing not to use a restricted free-agent tender on the quarterback.

  23. baylinorcrush says:

And Bannan doesn’t miss a beat to get back on his feet:

Defensive tackle Justin Bannan, who was cut by the Denver Broncos on Thursday, said he is interested in returning to the Ravens. “I love that place,” said Bannan, who spent four seasons with the Ravens before leaving for the Broncos for the 2010 season. “I love Baltimore. I still keep in contact with a lot of guys back there. They’re family to me, the Ravens organization is family to me. So that’s a definite possibility. It just depends on what they’ve got to do. There’s a lot of things that go into it, but they know how I feel about them and I know how they feel about me. I’m still the same guy. I’m healthy, I’m ready to go, I feel great. I’ve made it through the years strong.”

    Hahahahahaha!!!!!!!!!!!!

  24. baylinorcrush says:

    Ok, done, promise.

  25. royalbroncofan1 says:

Good to see Broncos retained Kevin Vickerson, if not as a starter, for depth. Last year, was Kevin Vickerson’s 1st season where he played the most games of his 6 yr career…(15).
He played in 13 games previous year with the Titans.
AT 6’5″ and 305 lbs, Vickerson should be more effective in 4-3 at DT.

  26. baylinorcrush says:

He signed a two year contract. I liked what I saw and so did they.

  27. strandoftds says:

Glad for Vickerson, sad for Bannan. If he ends up in Baltimore I`ll be happy for him. Great player and a great person.

  28. baylinorcrush says:

You guys are lucky, I’m leaving to go on the Orange Crush until Monday, LOL. Til then…

  29. strandoftds says:

So I guess this means we are keeping Bryan Dawkins. Well good for him. The Bronco`s know something that I don`t. I hope he has a great year and stays healthy too.

  30. royalbroncofan1 says:

Vickerson is a big guy. Saw him up close at a few games last year. He has played weighing up to 320 lbs in his career.

  31. royalbroncofan1 says:

I did see Dawk on NFL network as he was attending the NFL/NFLPA meetings.

  32. footballMANIAC says:

    From Fox Sports:

General manager Brian Xanders was asked to compare top defensive line prospects Nick Fairley and Marcell Dareus at the combine.

His response: “They are different types of players. Dareus has played in a 3-4 and he’s played left end, right end and nose tackle. Fairley is really a true three-technique and he is a disruptive guy non-stop throughout the game. He beats linemen all day, every game.”

It sounds like he favors Fairley at DL. If that’s the case, I really hope that they take Peterson at 2 (not that I didn’t already). I firmly believe that Peterson is the best player in the draft and the only one worthy of the #2 pick for us.

  33. sndvl says:

If Bannan really wanted to stay, he would have taken the reduced salary.

  34. royalbroncofan1 says:

Some additional information regarding lockout and who it really will hurt.

The little guy, of course. The New York Jets, for example, have announced that they will require all business-side employees to take a one-week unpaid leave each month during any lockout, and most of these people aren’t Lexus-driving executives.

They are receptionists, ticket salespeople and the like. And, should the lockout lead to canceled games, thousands of more stadium workers are at the risk of losing jobs.

Plus, any prolonged absence of the sport will cause fan anger and apathy. It took baseball years to recover from the cancellation of the cancellation of the 1994 World Series.

“They have the nerve to shutdown the league,” said Scott Weiss, part of an advocacy group called the sports fan coalition, “with no thought that one day fans will say, ‘enough is enough.’ “

  35. royalbroncofan1 says:

Here is more Q&A regarding lockout courtesy of Steve Politi a sports columnist for The Star-Ledger in Newark, New Jersey. He frequently covers the NFL

“So if a lockout drags out for an extended time, which side is better suited to win this thing”?

If history is any indication, the owners. The NFLPA is widely regarded as the weakest union in pro sports, and the rank-and-file players know they only have a very small window — remember, the average career lasts 4.4 years — to earn their pay.

Players could feel the pinch once their salaries, which are paid over 17 game checks from September to January, is cut.

Marvin Miller, the renowned baseball union chief, put it this way: “What you have here are players who don’t understand solidarity, and no work has been done to really educate them. That can only be achieved over time with an amazing amount of repetition, and you don’t have that time.”

  36. BroncoRoyaltyEst.1979 says:

These may be teams that may take a look Ortons way if a CBA is reached and if the Broncos are willing to trade him.

Of course this is all completely hypothetical at the moment

Adam Scheftler – Teams with QB quandaries

Arizona, Minnesota (ref: bay post @ 8:17am), and Washington, Shanny isn’t happy with McNabb yet they will hold on to him for the time being but their back up, Grossman enters the offseason with an equal degree of uncertainty. He is scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent. Tennessee is another team looking for a Pocket QB. As i’m sure most know Carson Palmer wants to leave the Bengals and has said that he will walk away from the NFL all together if he don’t get his way, but his stock has dropped significantly so if a CBA is reached its unlikely that they will be able to get what they want for him so they may need to use a DP to pick up another QB.

Remember this is if a CBA is reached and if the Broncos are willing to trade him

Just some thoughts on where Orton could be nedded if a CBA is reached.

    -Royalty

  37. royalbroncofan1 says:

What’s the problem anyway? Isn’t football the most popular sport in the country?

It is, and its popularity is booming in spite of the sour economy. Essentially, the dispute boils down to this: The players and the owners disagree on how to divide $9 billion in revenues. The players get 59.5% after the owners take $1 billion off the top. They are fine with the status quo. The owners want to skim another $1 billion off that and then reduce the percentage that the players receive.

(Thus owners want two more games to compensate if left as is).

  38. royalbroncofan1 says:

Wait a minute. That seems like a lot. How can the owners justify that?

They say the current labor deal — which they approved by a 30-2 vote — is out of whack in favor of the players and doesn’t take into account the cost of building stadiums and promoting the game. The players have countered that the owners are unwilling to fully open their books to prove this.

“There’s been no indication that any team has lost a dime,” is how DeMaurice Smith, executive director of the NFL Players Association, countered that claim. Add this to the mix: The owners also want an 18-game season (up from 16), a move players are against because of injury concerns.

  39. royalbroncofan1 says:

    What does decertification mean?

It means the union would no longer exist. Players would give up their collective bargaining rights, but then could file individual anti-trust suits against the league and the owners.

The bottom line: Decertification means the NFL will spend more time in courtrooms this off-season than on practice fields, since the league likely will counter with a lawsuit arguing that the move is a “sham” decertification.

  40. royalbroncofan1 says:

    What happens if there’s a lockout, football-wise?

Not much. Players will be barred from any team-related activities. Free agents will remain unsigned. Even the draft will be different — teams will be allowed to talk to their picks up until the point they were selected, but then not until a deal is struck.

Teams might even approach the draft differently, picking based on needs rather than the best players available, because who knows when they’ll be able to address those needs on the free-agent market.

  41. BroncoRoyaltyEst.1979 says:

Yup most popular easily actually the NFL is at the height of its popularity, breaking records for TV ratings: This year’s Super Bowl was the most-watched program in U.S. history. The previous No. 1 was the 2010 Super Bowl.

    President Obama said it best:

“I’m a big football fan,” Obama said, “but I also think that for an industry that’s making $9 billion a year in revenue, they can figure out how to divide it up in a sensible way and be true to their fans, who are the ones who obviously allow for all the money that they’re making.”

  42. BroncoRoyaltyEst.1979 says:

I really think the owners will stick to their guns, they have planned for every situation. The 4 Billion dollars in TV revenue that was to be used by owners to help fund a potential lockout being struck down by Judge Doty was thought to be leverage. It now seems less significant as union officials have claimed. The owners are billionaires for a reason. These guys have deep pockets and would have loved to have had that extra money in their war chest but I believe that they have already planned for this and now will just go to plan B. The average NFL career is only 3.5-4.5 years. Its not like a regular job with all the wear and tear their body’s take.

Ryan Clark had this to say:

“I’ve played for years in this league and people are saying that its millionaires and billionaires arguing over these insane figures, yet most players are living check to check due to debt, paying alimony, the house payments, and most players come from poor backgrounds and end up taking care of their whole families.

Its not about the Michael Vicks or the Payton Mannings. Its about the meat of the locker rooms that make around 6 figures. Thats who’s gonna get the worst end of the stick.

I also heard that the League is already planning for an 8 game season. If any season at all.

This would have to be the year when we get one of the highest DPs for a dark cloud to form and rain on our parade.

  43. Mikeyb1203 says:

To be honest with you I have to side with the players. The owners obviously make a heck of a lot of money. I think they need to stick with the 16 game schedule because you think we have injuries now also think about the transition for college kids coming out from a 13 game schedule.

  44. royalbroncofan1 says:

    Thanks Royalty.. good info.

  45. Mikeyb1203 says:

Also what exactly is a tender?

  46. Mikeyb1203 says:

Also I do still like Fairley even though most here are Dareus or Peterson. If you watch all his videos is beats a 1on1 block like 95% of the time and splits double teams like 75% of the time. Call him inconsistent all you want but he only played 2 seasons in college imagine what he would have put up next year. 10 tackles for a DT is insane.

  47. Mikeyb1203 says:

    Sorry 10 sacks.

  48. Mikeyb1203 says:

Also I would like to point out to some of you that most of your agreed that the combine should not change your opinion on who we draft minus the interview part. Well we had alot of believers of Fairley before Dareus beat him in the 10 yard split but now no one wants him.

  49. 1nOnlyTRB says:

True sndvl, but bannan woulda needed to take a SEVERE pay cut. That doesnt sound very friendly. Its McDs fault for being lax with contracts for older guys.

As far as the CBA goes; I dont understand all this stupidity. If theres a lock out both sides lose and recovering could be hard. Like everyone says, football is at the height of its popularity, why would you rock the boat?

I agree with the players. Always do. Look at Marshall situation I spoke about alot. As long as its approached in a sensible manner i dont mind. I think they owners are being greedy. Ive always stood by the thought that owners/organizations show no loyalties but we always expect players/employees to show it and call them non team players when they try to do some business. Organizations will drop you like a hot potato at any moment. They are just being what they are, business men. Who are always thinking of more ways to get in the black no matter how much they make which pisses me off to tell you the truth. Like Rich Eisen said, the lawyers are the ones really winning right now. I dont want an 18 game season sounds good and all but then 16 game records would be virtually pointless not to mention its a big sticking point holding up this CBA and i rather watch my usual football than not watch it in hopes of 2 more games.

I feel bad for the employees of the stadiums. We all knew it would be the fans and lil guys to get hurt. I also hear the NFLPA when they say they are fighting for the lil guys in the NFL not the guys like palmer who have 85 million in the bank for whatever reason. Also lets not forget all these high rookie salaries. Sigh….this is all just nonsense. tired of it all… TRB out…

  50. BroncoRoyaltyEst.1979 says:

I agree with you completely TRB…

At least today is somewhat good news now that the two sides have agreed to a 7 day extension which ends next friday 5 p.m. EST. For the owners and the players the recess is good. Let them go back to their respective families and gather themselves personally. Maybe relax a bit, but I propose that come Monday they get locked in a room and hammer a deal out.

Players may be tempted to decertify because one issue paramount to the owners is to try and get a change of venue, The League don’t want Judge David Doty overseeing this, he is 87 years old and has a track record for siding with the players.
