Orton Wins

October 9th, 2010 - 11:19am by Gabe Hiatt

With the help of your votes, Kyle Orton has been named the FedEx Air Player of the Week following his performance at Tennessee last Sunday.

FedEx is making a $2,000 donation in Orton’s name to the local Safe Kids USA coalition in Denver to support pedestrian safety improvements.

Orton completed 70 percent of his passes against the Titans, threw for 341 yards and two touchdowns and posted a 93.8 quarterback rating. With 1:33 remaining in the game, Orton hit Correll Buckhalter on a 6-yard touchdown pass to give his team the lead.

His output in Tennessee bumped him ahead of Philip Rivers for the most passing yards in the NFL and sustained the Broncos’ status as the No. 1 ranked passing offense in the league.

Orton’s 1,419 passing yards are the second-highest total through four games in NFL history. Only Kurt Warner produced more passing yards in that time span with the Rams in 2000.

Glad to see Orton getting some respect. Good for him.

  2. baylinorcrush says:

Good deal, I did my part in voting, congrats Orton.

  3. Orange you glad says:

It’s about freakin time we did something better then the dolts, good job Orton keep putting up those great numbers and get us more wins.

  4. danso says:

Good for Orton-He has been playing well above expectations and so far is carrying the team on offense with no rushing help. Reading all the posts could almost make you believe we are dead meat tomorrow. We are a touchdown underdog. We are on the road. We are playing a team that will go deep in the playoffs this year and maybe all the way. We are playing a team ranked #1 in power rankings by Fox at least. We are not expected to win. All the expert picks I have seen this week have picked the Ravens. So we are screwed? Everyone one of us will tune in and believe we have a chance because we do. (Any given Sunday). If we don’t win the game, I hope we play well and keep it close. I too have had an L on this game from before the season and have said numerous times this four game stretch from Indy to NY is our toughest and if we could win one or two of them it would be great and we can still have a successful season. Well, we got one last week and maybe just maybe we pull one out this week. If we do great! If we don’t it is not the end of the season. This is our second game with our starting offensive line together. our defensive line is much improved and I think we are going to be an improved team over last year. Get us to 4-4 at the half way mark and I believe we can go 10-6. Never give up. Go TEAM Broncos. PS-And I believe Champ will be with us next year. Ok so I’m a believer, that’s why I watch the Broncos and will be in Denver next weekend watching us beat the Jets! And that is why I am hoping for a 19-17 win this week.

  5. MANDIEGO says:

This will be one of the toughest games for the Broncos this season. We will need to execute on all aspects of the game to pull this one out.

Orton will need to play mistake free, special teams must be special. The defense needs to prevent big plays and penalties. Without out a run game, we will need some creativity and luck. Hopefully, the Ravens are over confident and come out sloppy.

We must put 7 on the board every trip to the Red Zone!!!!

  6. MANDIEGO says:

Still have to predict a loss 24-28 Ravens.

That’s ok because the raiders are going to beat the chargers and KC will lose to indy. So we will be fine.

  7. bronco-blaze says:

IDK what ima think if kc beats the colts.

  8. LKW 7 23 49 80 says:

My first inclination is to think it would be pretty funny if the Chiefs beat the Colts. And the more losses Indy gets, the better. …But, at some point I might just have to take KC seriously as a contender for our division title, especially if they start out 4-0. So, does that make KC vs. Indy a lose-lose situation or a win-win?

Go, Orton! He deserves the award and the rising respect around the league. He’s certainly shown me that I made the right decision in picking up his jersey. I felt he did well last season and would improve with a full year in the system, but this is just an AMAZING start.

I guess I’ll try a prediction, though I don’t have as strong a feeling about this game as last week’s. I do think we’ll get some pass yardage, though Kyle may actually be held under 300 this week. Rushing I hope for a little improvement – maybe 40 or so yards and a TD. May see a trick play or two to try to thwart an aggressive Ravens D, though I’m starting to suspect that McD is holding onto “Wild Horses” for our divisional match-ups. I think our D can pick Flaco off at least once, and hopefully produce a sack or two; in general, they should continue their stout ways (great job on Johnson last week; nice development by Ayers against the run). This is a tough test, but here’s hoping the headline for this story is prophetic! I’ll guess Broncos win 20-16.

Glad to see Orton working so hard, and finally getting recognized for it,way to go for the Field General and the 4 Horsemen.haha

I know a lot of you guys wished I’d give up on the 4 Horsemen nickname, but I can’t let it go,sorry.LOL

  10. Cgyj says:

I’m glad to see Kyle Orton do well and gain some respect for himself and the Broncos. It’s about time!

  11. sndvl says:

    Congrats to KO!

Love it BFE. Field General and the Four Horsemen!!!

Let’s hope KO delivers another stellar performance and KO’s those Baltimore Birds. Btw, baylin, I should clarify that when I mentioned Orton and MVP in the same sentence, it wasn’t with any seriousness. More of pointing out 1 extreme to the next. Like him being traded, to that other end of the spectrum. However, if he were to achieve 5000 yards, it would most definitely be a topic of debate!

    GO BRONCOS!!

  12. 07elway says:

Congrats to Orton… you know its a good season when Orton makes Rivers cry about being in 2nd place. I look forward to seeing Orton keeping up with this pace tomorrow, he’s got a big challenge ahead of him though.

There’s no way on God’s green earth Indy is going to lose to the Chiefs in Indy. The Chiefs are not that good. I can’t have these goofballs have bragging rights while I’m still stuck here in “misery”. Granted, Indy lost to a good team last week but I don’t see them letting KC come into THEIR territory and going back home with the win. I already lost my lunch with the fact they are 3-0… I can’t handle them being 4-0 with that last win being over the Colts. Makes me nauseous just talking about this. And since the genius’ who came up with the NFL schedule just had to time the Denver game at exactly the same time as the KC game tomorrow, I guess I’ll get to sit back & watch the Chiefs surrender to Indy and pray to God Denver is fighting out a win in Baltimore. I can only hope we don’t get creamed, crushed & squished by the Ravens. Either we’ll have a VERY bad day and get run over or we’ll put up a fight and make it a close, low-scoring game.

For once, I’m going to be a Colts fan tomorrow. I want the Chiefs to lose so bad, can’t stand them.

    Keep the faith Broncos Country…
    GO BRONCOS in 2010!!!!!

  13. imready says:

Orton deserves credit and support from us Bronco fans whether you like him or not. He has been making some incredible throws that no one could do better. For me, the only knock I had on Orton was not making the clutch throws to convert pressure third downs to win the game. Well, this season and especially after last week I have more faith in him to be able to lead this team as far as they can go. Who’s making better throws than Orton? The only thing that will slow him down is if the O-line lets the opposing defenses get at him and he gets injured. He plays within himself, no he’s not flashy but he is efficient and has better arm strrength than he gets credit for. That was one hell of a pass to win the game last week, my hats off to him. He will pass for over 300 yards against the Ravens and make it look easy . Why you ask? The Ravens have a great defensive line but they are bigger but slower that Tennessee last week . He’ll feel like he has all day back there! Let’s Go Broncos!

  14. 24_champbailey says:

    24-21 denver

    24

  15. baylinorcrush says:

We have a lot more heart than the media gives us, but anyhow this is one of the best team in the NFL we are playing tomorrow, so out of as much respect I can muster for our team I still see us losing a real close one 19-20, it’s hard to do but it still feels like the right thing to do contest wise.

  16. O&BinCostaRica says:

Oh my goodness! HOW SAD! The title of the BTV preview video says..

The Broncos look for their second road in a row, this week in Baltimore against the Ravens.

Second road WHAT???? WIN???? Or are they so void of confidence that they didn’t even put the word WIN in there?

GIMME A BREAK! This is denverbroncos.com, everyone in here LOVES the Broncos. EVERYONE here is hoping for win. EVERYONE here is a fan of the team in good and bad times. These are good times. We are coming off a win. The team looks A LOT more physical than they did last year. THIS IS NOT THE SAME TEAM THAT GOT WHIPPED last year in Baltimore.

ARE THEY UNBEATABLE? I sure don’t think so!

It is 53 men against another 53 men not machines or terminators or anything like that. C’MON! A little more faith and confidence please. We can take on WHOEVER and kick their behind up and down the field.

    GO BRONCOS!!!

And to the person in charge of http://www.denverbroncos.com and giving a title to the video…. SHAME ON YOU! Second road nothing… second road WIN!

  17. BeastFromEast92 says:

That was a hard one to swallow for you Baylin, felt like it hurt a lot. It’s hard to predict your team to lose, but I came VERY close to doing the same thing too,we could very easily lose, but I guess I’m just hoping we win SO bad I predicted us to win.I see this game going either way,but I think it will be close,to be sure you got mine 16-13 Broncos.

    BTW…if I don’t post anymore until Tuesday,I’ll be thinking of you guys while I’m tossing back a few(6 packs).LOL

    GO BRONCS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    BFE

  18. broncosmex says:

    denver wins 21-10 (:

  19. camharland says:

Bay- My prediction is 26-17 Broncos. This should be a fun game to watch!

  20. denver0723 says:

Orton is the man! I hope we keep him for a while. I vote we start him the next 2 years at least, and let Tebow develop much like Aaron Rodgers did.

I also feel like we should cut Brady Quinn and use the roster spot on a player that doesn’t suck monkey nuts.

  21. baylinorcrush says:

That’s funny denver0723, I was saying that all summer, no way we should keep Quinn as a third QB, and most everyone said I was nuts, that we needed to carry 3 QB’s, I say crapola, carry two and if one goes down bring in an out of work QB from anywhere, he couldn’t be any worse than Quinn, lately I have seen some folks starting to see my point of view, what a waste of a roster spot. Hell Elway and Kubiak never needed a third QB, that’s just plain dumb to carry someone as bad as Quinn, monkey nut sucker, LOL.

  22. denver0723 says:

baylin, I agree with most everything you write. You study our team very well, and you speak with a lot of knowledge. I can admit I felt like you overreacted to the Bailey situation haha, but I also understand why it pissed you off so much. McD has constantly left us with loads of questions that many of us are tired of trying to find answers for.

    Good News Though:
    http://www.nfl.com/news/story/09000d5d81b2abd7/article/mcdaniels-explains-broncos-stance-on-bailey-contract-talks

That article is McD saying how much he wants Bailey to retire a Bronco. Don’t know if you read it or not.

So at least we can relax about that situation for now. In the meantime, we have a tough game tomorrow. We can dissect the Ravens secondary all day tomorrow. And I believe that with all my heart. The true test will be how our defense handles the Ravens offense. Their passing attack is just as dangerous as ours, and they can do something we can’t… run the ball.

Should be interesting. I posted my score prediction the other day. 24-17 Broncos or something close to that.

    Go Broncos!!!!!!!!!!

  23. denver0723 says:

And I believe the main reason McD won’t cut Quinn is because it would be like admitting that the Hillis trade was a huge mistake. And McD won’t own up to mistakes regarding trading players like Cutler, Marshall, Sheffler, Hillis, etc..

Although getting rid of Cutler turned out pretty good. Orton just needs to score points in the redzone.

We lead the league with 20 drives to the redzone, but we are 27th in redzone scoring.

  24. stevecan2 says:

We lose tomorrow 27 to 10. Stating as much, we are three aspects away from being a superbowl team. Think I am crazy? Just wait until we figure out how to convert on 3rd and mid to long and do what we did in the red zone last week, run with a hint of purpose and we shall see…

of course it doesn’t take a genius to realize having all those things going for you will make you highly successful in the NFL however, it takes a lot to say when orton is the starting QB, unfortunately one of the most under rated, never will get shown love QB in the NFL.

  25. sndvl says:

0723- are we reading the same article. I got no good thoughts after reading it. Tho baylin did already post a response in an earlier blog. They are NOT talking about the same thing. The trade deadline is the 19th.
I don’t want to believe it’s possible. With McD l, ha! I expect it.

GO BRONCOS 2K10!! Led by Champ and The Four Horsemen

  26. Shaver87 says:

I cant believe there is fans on here saying the broncos are gonna lose! You ain’t a true fan. No matter who they play I always believe the broncos are gonna win. Yea the ravens have the number 1 pass defense but what great quarterbacks have they played week 1 Mark Sanchez nope, week 2 Carson Palmer horrible this year, week 3 Senca Wallace nothing needs to be said haha, and week 4 Charlie Batch. I rest my case. I’m excpecting a big day from Kyle Orton. Broncos win 28 to 21

  27. baylinorcrush says:

OK, all picks are in, no picks on game day as in every week.

Shaver87, sorry I can’t get your pick in, stevecan2 was the last one in. As far as you are not a true fan if you don’t pick your team to win, you are obviously confusing rooting for your team to win vs. entering a contest for a football game score result to win THAT! two completely different things, like fantasy football, just because you are a die hard Bronco fan won’t mean you are going to pick only Denver players, you are trying to win something, at least I am, I picked us to lose only 19-20 because I admit it is indeed very hard to even write down a Bronco loss, but considering I picked the Ravens in the Summer to win the SB, I would be a major nitwit in the brain department if I picked us to beat them in their house, for the contest that is, elementary dear Watson.

Anyhow, Go Broncos, go over there with an attitude just like you did take to Nashville and take it to this Ravens team instead of having them taking it to us like so many times in the past. Intensity will be key to the game, this will be a battle of wills, and usually Baltimore wins that and that’s why they are favorite in this game, reverse the trend!

denver0723, yeah I printed that article in an Oct. 8th 3:13pm post on the previous blog “Big Returns”, but I took all the mumbo jumbo out and only posted what McD and Bailey said, that way it was easier to see how much different they sounded about the matter, then bloggers posted their thoughts about it and most agreed it sounded like they were talking about a completely different deal, meaning anything is still possible in my view.

And thanks sndvl for posting the 19th trade deadline, I always thought it was the 17th.

  28. baylinorcrush says:

Now for up to date newest development on what went wrong with the Bailey negociations, take a listen to what Klis says about it, and when Klis says something it’s because he can back it up, so he most likely has it right:

If only the end of contract talks meant nothing more than the likely departure of Champ Bailey from the Broncos.

The more ominous sign from the negotiation shutdown is that Bailey won’t have a league in which to play in 2011.

The 11th-hour decision to yank Bailey from his future was not made by Broncos coach Josh McDaniels or general manager Brian Xanders.

This decision came from above. According to NFL sources close to these negotiations, Broncos owner Pat Bowlen and chief operating officer Joe Ellis made the call Tuesday to suspend talks until after the season.

He goes on saying how much more of a possibility a walk out in 2011 is than previously thought, so in essence some owners are freaking out new contracts wise. But not all mind you, Brady just got his big payday and my guess is Peyton Manning will get his too. But anyhow, the blame as of now has been switched from Xanders/McD to Bowlen/Ellis, but in the end I don’t really think Bailey really cares who pulled out and why, he just thinks he deserves a contract regardless and who could blame him.

  29. baylinorcrush says:

This is some stuff we all know, but considering it comes from someone who won a SB with the Ravens, it is worth posting here as a reminder of what we are up against in this game, as reported by Legwold:

“What you don’t want is a situation where defenses, their only concern is attacking your protections, breaking down your protections and getting to your quarterback,” former NFL quarterback Trent Dilfer said.

Dilfer, the guy behind center for the Ravens when they pounded their way to a Super Bowl victory to close the 2000 season, is a quality resource for what the Broncos face Sunday in Baltimore.

Looking at the way things have gone for the Broncos on offense, Dilfer believes their challenge moving forward will be keeping Kyle Orton in the lineup and away from the punishment that’s to come if they can’t be functional in the running game. Or at least a little stubborn about sticking with it from time to time.

“When a defense has to account for you in the run game, it has to account for every gap up front. It has to disperse its resources to do that,” Dilfer said. “A good running team, a good play-action team, can then find more places to put the ball in the passing game because the defense can’t cover everything. And if they have to honor all of those gaps up front, that leaves room.

“But if their sole, No. 1 purpose on defense becomes breaking down your pass protections and getting to your quarterback with nothing else to worry about, the quarterback is going to get hit.”

For Orton’s sake, and of course our season’s sake, let’s hope we have a semblance of a running game today, even if it’s just running it 25 times for 50 some yards, at least that would allow Orton to collect his thoughts between a constant onslaught. Make no doubt, the Ravens are coming at Orton today and coming hard and often, they have absolutely zero respect for our running game and rightly so, their game plan will be nothing but designing various looks just to get to the QB because Orton is not fast in his decision making, they know if they get in his face early in each play no way he can beat them, so screens and those LOS side passes will be at a premium again like last week.

I guess this is why Orton makes the big bucks, or will, waking up this morning with nothing in front of his eyes but a bunch of mean spirited beasts prepared to come at him either way they can get to knock him down silly. Better him than me, life is easy watching football, on a day like this it is nothing but for a guy like Orton. Scary, and he goes down, so does our season, may the O line rise to the occasion is all I can hope for…

  30. baylinorcrush says:

You know, I just had a thought, we should start Brady Quinn today! LOL. A sacrificial lamb sort of things, haha.

  31. Orange_Crusher says:

    I disagree with you bay…..

I wouldn’t say our season goes down if Orton goes down..

Maybe the Offensive game plan would change drastically with Tebow in at QB. Maybe thats exactly what our running game needs?

Tebow would have much more play action ability to bring to the turf… get the opposing defenses spread horizontally from sidline to sideline and help open up running lanes.

On the other hand if you mean, Orton goes out and Quinn comes in?? Then, yea, we’re goin down…..lol

    ILMSDB!!!

  32. baylinorcrush says:

No OC, I respectfully disagree, we would go down with either one, we don’t have the kind of team that can support a rookie QB now, regardless of who he is, no running game and no dominating D, key ingredients for someone like Sanchez by example to have succeeded, just my opinion.

  33. sndvl says:

And I disagree with you OC. If Orton goes down and Tebow comes in then we have no legitimate run game nor a quality pass game. Tebow is raw. There is no telling if Tebow will even cut it. And if he had to face the Ravens today, well, I too would be predicting a loss in the friendly contest baylin is hosting!

    GO BRONCOS 2K10!!

  34. royalbroncofan1 says:

Let’s see of TT get’s in for a few plays today… anyone else think it’s a possibility?
Coach has to have something in his game plan to try and throw those ugly birds off their rythmn.
Man, I sure as heck hope Quinn not the backup today. Agree with O_C, …we might as well throw in the towel if that happens.

Trading Hilllis for Quinn is like trading Avatar for Ishtar!!!

    LET’S GO BRONCOS!!!!

  35. baylinorcrush says:

Yeah, I wouldn’t mind seeing some change-ups with Tebow coming in, as long as it’s not to run dead straight up the middle like the only two downs he has played so far.

  36. baylinorcrush says:

SHOCK AND AWE is what we need.

  37. Orange_Crusher says:

    Happy game day fellas!!!

Lets just hope Air-Orton stays upright so we don’t have to find out…

If worse comes to worse I would rather see TT that BQ take over though…

    KEEP THE DRIVE ALIVE BRONCOS!!!!

  38. Orange_Crusher says:

GROUND AND POUND = SHOCK AND AWE in Baltimore

This is our first chance to have a fully healthy O line become solid….

I’m looking for our guys up front on O to show a huge push today….

    PUSH’EM OFF THE LINE BRONCOS!!!!!!!

  39. baylinorcrush says:

That goes without saying, you know how I feel about Quinn, LOL.

  40. royalbroncofan1 says:

    Happy Game Day guys!!

Let’s hope our boys make a game out of this matchup.
If we can keep it close, we can pull one out again!!

    GO BRONCOS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  41. baylinorcrush says:

Enjoy you all, W or L, I will.
