Orton and Moreno Finalists For Week 5 Awards

October 13th, 2009 - 9:34am by Gray Caldwell

After the team’s Week 5 overtime win against the Patriots, two more Broncos are up for weekly NFL awards.

You can vote for Kyle Orton for the FedEx Air Player of the Week, and Knowshon Moreno is once again nominated for the Pepsi NFL Rookie of the Week.

Orton threw for 330 yards, two touchdowns and one interception (a Hail Mary attempt) on 35-of-48 passing on Sunday. He also drove the Broncos on the game-tying touchdown drive with less than 10 minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, and led the game-winning drive in overtime that ended in Matt Prater’s 41-yard field goal.

His 72.9 completion percentage and 48 attempts were both career highs.

Moreno made his first career start, and went on to rush 21 times for 88 yards and catch four passes for 36 yards — 124 yards from scrimmage in the win. That number led all rookies for the week, and was a career high.

He also led all rookies in rushing in Week 5, and his four runs of 10 yards or more tied for the second-most in the league last week.

So start voting, Broncos fans — here and here.

I voted multiple times for Orton but it only let me vote once for Moreno, what gives?

Good to see Orton and Moreno up for awards. Congrats to both of them. Orton deserves props, lead the team on a few long drives and made some great passes. Moreno showed he can be a good, hard running back (he just needs to hold on to the ball better)
Just a side note- why do Chicago players leave and do well?- Orton has started out good with Denver and Cedric Benson (Chicago did not think he was any good) is the leading rusher.

I think it’s a great accomplish for KO, being so attacked, criticized (and unpopular), even when he’s still getting into a new city, new coaches, new teammates, new system… and still just 5 weeks into this new season.

Moreno is proving he’s up to the challenge. He just needs to take care of the ball better.

Cheers for them and all the team!!

    Go Broncooos!

  4. BroncoWildKansan says:

  5. JElway_fan7 says:

WOW !!! Way to go guys !!! Well deserved for both Orton & Moreno !!! Keep up the GREAT work !!!

  6. Deify_you says:

I voted for Orton 10 times, it kept saying click here to vote again, I wonder if it really records multiple votes? I voted for different ground players each time…interesting. Could only vote for Moreno once.

  7. Dynamicdave says:

Always ready to throw my vote into the hat for our boys. Knowshon is on fire and Kyle, well, I’m very, very happy for him. After all the flack he took in Chicago, it’s great to see him silence the critics (well, some of them, anyways).

  8. broncofanlvnm says:

    Vabroncoguy,
Will you vote for Orton (and Moreno)?

  9. 07elway says:

Well deserved for both of them. Already voted quite a few times for both. Orton has done a fantastic job so far, very proud of him. He’s adjusting nicely to the McD system… he’ll have a great career if those 2 stick together. Moreno has some “butterfinger” issues to work on but he’s definitely proven himself. Not too shabby for a rookie.

    Keep the faith Bronco Country…
    GO BRONCOS!!!!!

RIVERS LOOKING UP AND SEEING 92…PRICELESS

  11. orangecrushgrl says:

Way to go boys…It’s nice to c Orton getting recognition when he really has deserved it right from the get go. It is so impressive to c him improve week after week, he is getting more confident w/ each throw. So very proud to b a BRONCO fan, always!!!! And btw I believe those guys looked pretty good in the old uniforms even those socks which really totally fit the look.
    Will VOTE VOTE VOTE VOTE!!!!!!!

  12. orangecrushgrl says:

Maybe Moreno should constantly walk around w/ the ball like Marshall did after he had fumbled I believe last year or the year b4. He is still an amazing rookie.

  13. brian_schneider says:

Moreno wasn’t known for his fumbling in college. I believe it is just an adjustment he needs to make. In the NFL you always have guys trying to rip the ball out and other stuff more than in college, in my opinion. Also the guys trying to rip it away are also stronger and faster. I don’t anticipate fumbles being a problem for Moreno.

  14. bazzashaw says:

Well done boys – well deserved – I am having a vision – DOOM for player of the week next week after the Monday night Massacre of Rivers haha

    Go Broncos!

  15. mad_orange_devil_27 says:

Really impressed with how our offense played and I’ve been impressed with our defense all season long. I’ve been looking for a pair of those vertical striped socks and one of those knit caps with the ball on top, loving the throwbacks. Moreno just needs a period adjustment and I think he’ll start exploding onto the scene. I call for a tailgate party on the bye week!

  16. Hesky says:

    Already voted. GO BRONCOS!

  17. olderthandirt says:

happy for kyle he was treated badly,

  18. TheRoyalBeast says:

He was, and still is. He aint no peyton manning but he gets crucufied for what he don’t got more than he ever gets praised for what he does have. Congratz to them both. Offenses performance and rythmn has gotten better with each passing week and so has Orton and now without the glove he throwing even better. Kudos

  19. milehighmagic88 says:

I’m happy for both of them. Moreno looks like he’s growing into a stud. He can run, catch and pass protect like a left tackle. A complete back. Orton is definitely a cool customer. I thought it was funny when I read somewhere that he told the offense a joke in the huddle right before the 98 yard drive. That’s the kind of calm under pressure that the great ones (Elway, Montana) have. Not saying he’s on their level, but his performance was impressive.

And I just wanted to throw in that I think maybe the smartest personnel decision the team made this offseason was to cut Dre Bly…

  20. baylinorcrush says:

    … and the other 21…

  21. eternalorangeandblue says:

    Bring back Hamza!!

  22. baylinorcrush says:

Sounds like you like Abdullah, but he was a safety and it was the worse performing part of our team by far, no safety play to speak off, I’m surprised we still have one on our roster, but I think he was the only one worth salvaging, Barrett.

  23. baylinorcrush says:

Come to think of it our off season did turn out like a salvage operation to start with. Anyone who kept a job has got to be in Nirvana by now… And all the ones who didn’t are about to kick their own tails if they aren’t already. Life in the NFL, a swirlwind, I tell you.

  24. dbroncos6 says:

this team continues to amaze me each and evry week. i cant wait to play the chargers next monday in san diego to show that were the team to beat in the afc west this year and even the team to beat in the afc. i think that our defense continues to play well an shuts down philip rivers, with dj williams having a big game. marshall will continue his hot streak an catch a td, so will royal. an moreno tops it off with a td run. i say broncos win 24-14. GO BRONCOS!!!!!

  25. McDan Dare says:

I still don’t like these individual awards which I find divisive in a team game. I know Orton and Moreno played well but what about the recognition for the defense. It just does not sit right with me.

  26. olderthandirt says:

how about the “O”line, great pass protection and run blocking great job!!!

  27. broncomike83 says:

Great Job so far KO. Great game!!!! Go get em in SD>

  28. baylinorcrush says:

McDan Dare, I don’t like these awards because they are voted on by the fans who can go in there and vote for their player as many times as they have time on their hands, so they are pretty meaningless, to be chosen as a finalist has some merit but after that it’s a circus. On the other hand, on the other blog, the conference player of the week for O and D is a worthy award to be proud of because it is voted upon by the NFL, last week Bailey won it and this week Orton wins it, no cheap votes, already awarded. Congrats to them, very well deserved in both cases. By the way, thanks for the note on the other blog.

  29. tjnartw says:

I voted for Moreno about 20 times.

  30. baylinorcrush says:

    see….
