Orange Friday

January 12th, 2012 - 5:40pm by Stuart Zaas

Denver Mayor Michael B. Hancock has proclaimed Friday, Jan. 13 to be “Orange Friday” in the city and county of Denver to support the Broncos before their AFC Divisional contest at New England, which will kick off at 6 p.m. MST on Saturday, Jan. 14.

“Denver is electric with enthusiasm for the Broncos,” Mayor Hancock said. “It’s up to our fans to come together, continue to show support for our team and give them the energy needed to keep this magical season going.”

The Mayor is encouraging Broncos fans to wear orange on Friday, and the City has announced other initiatives that will be in effect leading up to Saturday’s game:

  • Fans are invited to help transform Bannock St. in front of the City and County Building into a giant “Good Luck Broncos” card with sidewalk chalk. At 11:45 a.m. on Friday, Mayor Hancock will sign the card and unveil the renaming of Bannock St. to “Broncos Boulevard” for the rest of the week.
  • In partnership with the Civic Center Conservancy, Mayor Hancock is also inviting fans to lunch in Civic Center with local food trucks selling Denver’s culinary delights from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Friday. Fans can bring canned goods to Civic Center Park beginning Friday for the “Cans from Fans” food drive co-hosted by the Broncos and FoodWorks Colorado.
  • The City and County Building will be lit with orange and blue every night until game day.
  • The Denver International Airport sign on Peña Boulevard and several large LED signs along 14th Street will be illuminated with orange and blue lights.
  • “Go Broncos” messages will be installed on 6,000 smart parking meter screens throughout Denver.
  • The Denver International Airport train will feature a Broncos message from John Elway, and DIA employees and ambassadors will wear “Mile High Magic” buttons.
  • Broncos mascot Miles’ jersey will be hung on the downtown Pavilions, as pictured below.
  • Mayor Hancock will participate in another mayor-to-mayor wager, this time with Boston’s Mayor Tom Menino.
  • The wayfinder sign lights along the 16th Street Mall will be changed to orange and blue.
  • The city is encouraging Downtown Denver building owners to display orange and blue lighting.
  • AM 850 KOA’s live game coverage will be broadcast over the Southwest Rink at Skyline Park sound system for ice skaters to enjoy. On Saturday, the Southwest Rink is open 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. Skating is free, and skate rentals are free if skaters wear orange or a Broncos jersey.
  • Below is the official proclamation from the Mayor’s office:

COLORADO SUPREME COURT JUSTICE PENS POEMS

Colorado Supreme Court Justice Greg Hobbs is as big a Broncos fan as anyone, and checked in with two poems he wrote about the team as it prepares to travel to New England to take on the Patriots this Saturday.

    Rocky Mountain Thunder

    Salute the Patriots!
Paul Revere, John Adams, Emily Dickinson,
the Oxbow of the Connecticut River the Hudson River
painters revered as the opening to the West.

    Destiny calls!
Through forest and plains the Great Divide stands
for open country at the heart of the continent,
Ride, you Rocky Mountain thunder, Ride!

    -Greg Hobbs 1/11/2012

    Orange Glow in the West!

Scientists call the orange glow in the West
    a scientific phenomenon

Poets and travel agents say the sun tucks the peaks
to sleep every night on its way to Hawaii

Others favor a more theological explanation,
    “God’s Country!”

Las Vegas bettors won’t give you any odds on that.

But, I’m a judge dependent on a careful analysis of all the facts
    and rational well-crafted arguments . . .

    Go Tebow! Go Broncos!

      killerkod,nothing offensive?

He sang”Jesus said to Tebow, leave me alone,I’m tired of watching Bronco games, and you are on your own”.I think it was offensive to Tebow.

I hate Fallon anyway,so I might not be to bias, lol.

Sorry to leave you hanging last night,I went to bed.I would go with the Orange Champ jersey.

Happy Friday the 13th, how about we hope Tom Brady has a bad friday the 13th and sprains the index finger on his throwing arm LOL. All jokes aside Im so pumped for tommorows game. Even back in 2005 no one really gave us a chance against the patriots and we were one of the top 2 seeds.

Welcome to Broncos Country Gator2Bronco … doesn’t matter how you got here as long as u got here and acknowledge the whole team and organization with a rich history. Woody Paige: Tim Tebow is John Elway’s long-awaited successor
      Posted: 01/13/2012 01:00:00 AM MST
      By Woody Paige

“I think the thing about Tim is what everybody calls the ‘It.’ ”

      — Josh McDaniels, May 6, 2010

Tim Tebow is the Broncos’ quarterback.

      Get used to “It.”

Only one quarterback, John Elway, has been a starter in the franchise’s half-century-plus history for more than six seasons.

      Tebow will become the second.

As during the Elway Era, the scrutiny of, and spotlight on, Tebow will persist, but he’s here to stay. The search by Elway for a long-term successor to Elway is over.

McDaniels, who rejoined the Patriots for the playoff game against the Broncos, isn’t talking publicly, but he must be feeling private, personal affirmation because of the accomplishments of his 2010 controversial first-round draft selections — the T’n'T Connection, Demaryius Thomas and Tebow. Two weeks after he picked Tebow, McDaniels told me in his office that the quarterback’s “It” factor was comparable to Tom Brady’s when he was a young Patriots quarterback.

“When Tom came to us, I wasn’t on the offensive side of the ball, but I can remember the feeling in the building was that he had something that nobody else had … and how strongly he felt that ultimately he would be a great player. It was obviously apparent in subsequent seasons,” said McDaniels, who would serve, and will again, as the Patriots’ offensive coordinator.

McDaniels was confident, despite skepticism of most others, Tebow would excel in the NFL.

“He’s got such confidence that he will just not let himself fail. And that quality sometimes is very underrated. There are guys who will say they won’t fail, our team’s not going to fail, and they have a ‘I’m not going to let you down’ attitude. That’s what you notice with Tim.”

The Broncos’ second-year coach believed in Tebow so strongly he intended to trade quarterback Kyle Orton before the 2010 season. But McDaniels was persuaded to wait; Tebow didn’t develop as quickly on the practice field as the coach desired; Orton was reinstalled as the starter, and Tebow became an occasional “wildcat.”

If McDaniels had started Tebow last season, perhaps he would have saved his job. Perhaps not.

During this year’s lockout, coach John Fox and executive VP Elway decided to trade Orton and go with Tebow. Fox raised that suspicion when he told me in a post-July 4 interview that “deep down I have an idea” who would be the starter. “I prefer a gamer to a good practice player. … I want someone who will execute under pressure in a game.”

However, when the Broncos couldn’t finalize an Orton deal with the Dolphins, and Tebow again didn’t show passing proficiently in preseason practices, Fox reluctantly made Orton the No. 1.

At halftime of the fifth game, with the Broncos trailing, Fox alone resolved to, well, pull the trigger. He inserted Tebow, who almost produced a miraculous comeback against the Chargers.

The next week — over the protests of some assistant coaches and several players — Fox named Tebow the starter.

The coach’s daring decision turned out to be brilliant. With Tebow at quarterback and improved, inspired play from the rest of the team, the Broncos won seven of eight before losing to the Patriots.

Tebow, Brady, Fox and McDaniels are in the second round of the playoffs in Foxborough — Fox Boro? — and there is a Mr. Stanley-Dr. Livingstone quality, I presume, to the meeting.

In Brady’s second regular season (2001), in his first 11 starts (of 14), the Patriots were 8-3. He won his first start and was blown out in the second, 30-10, before winning four of the next six. In those 11 games, Brady had 16 touchdowns (all passing) and nine interceptions, 2,254 yards passing and 91 yards rushing.

In Tebow’s second regular season 10 years later, in his 11 starts, the Broncos were 7-4. He won his first start and was blown out in his second, 45-10, before winning six in a row. In 11 games, Tebow had 16 touchdowns (11 passing) and six interceptions, 2,305 yards passing and 859 yards rushing.

      Similar.

In Brady’s first famed “tuck rule” playoff game that season, the Patriots beat the Raiders 16-13 in overtime. Brady threw for 312 yards and one interception, without a touchdown.

In Tebow’s first, already legendary “The Pass” playoff game this season, the Broncos beat the Steelers 29-23 in overtime. Tebow threw for 316 yards and two touchdowns, without an interception.

      Quite analogous.

The Patriots went on to upset the Rams in the Super Bowl, and Brady has had a Hall of Fame career with three world championships.

      The Broncos?

The Patriots found their quarterback then, the Broncos now.

      “It” matters.

Thanks KK I actually was reading back through and gave up lol, I dunno how Bay goes through them all. Cool though I have only been out east once but jus to Halifax. Love it out there though.

Will Pats hold off on rushing Tebow?
      By Lindsay Jones
      Denver Post
      Posted January 13, 2012, 6:17 am MT

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — The Patriots sacked Denver quarterback Tim Tebow four times the last time the two teams played. But don’t expect exotic multi-player blitz schemes Saturday’s rematch.

Patriots defensive players this week said their focus is keeping Tebow in the pocket, not flushing him outside where they know he can be dangerous as a runner — or where he’s comfortable throwing while on the move.

“We can’t be out of rush lanes, we can’t be thrown off blocks, we have to play with good technique, trust our technique, trust one another, just trust that the guy next to you is doing his job. Do that and we’ll be okay,” nose tackle Vince Wilfork said. “We might not be happy that we’re not rushing the passer and stuff like that but this is one of those games where you have to make sure you take care, you can’t guess at anything, you can’t take a chance at anything because it may cost you. Especially against a team like this, it’s going to cost you. I think guys understand that. We’re going to have some shots, probably later in the game when we get a chance to make plays that we have to make them. We have to take advantage of them, definitely have to.”

Wilfork’s comments made it sound like the Patriots are focused first on stopping the Broncos’ running game. It’s a logical strategy. Denver rushed for 252 yards against the Patriots in December, including 168 yards in the first quarter.

“It’s just trying to get to him and not letting him out of the pocket and putting a little pressure on them and stopping the run, definitely stop the run number one,” defensive lineman Kyle Love said. “We didn’t do a great job of it in the first half of last game we played them, so definitely that’s going to be our main focus.”

    32. BeastFromEast92 says:

NFL Network says the Jets have ties to Peyton Manning.Hope he don’t go there, with their Defense and PM,they would be hard to beat!
That’s if Peyton can come back?

I think they will look for a QB,Sanchez totally sucks!

    33. seweatherman1 says:

I was thinking the same thing BFE. I bet the chalked up street and all of the decorations around town are something to see. I saw a pic of the jersey hanging outside the saloon and thought of you immediately. I bet you wouldn’t be scrapping with anyone in there about our Broncos.

    34. BeastFromEast92 says:

Tebow Time:2011 in Review, tonight at 8:00 EST on NFL Network!

Just put it on record on my DVR,in case I forget,Friday Night I tend to forget things.

    35. ScalptheChiefs says:

Ya I really like BC too… its unreal out there… Ontario sucks lol, but I felt the same way until this Tebow deal blew up now I see Bronco jerseys everywhere… Lot of girls though :) I work with 800 ppl, pretty much all dudes 90% football fans maybe 5 Bronco fans haha I am constantly decked out in Broncos gear though I love reppin them even during the 4-12 season lol

BFE Orange Friday is worldwide brother!!! Says so in the proclamation lol jus originated in Denver!

    36. ScalptheChiefs says:

Would be sooo awesome to be in Denver these days though!

    37. BeastFromEast92 says:

      LMAO@weatherman.

      Don’t diss ‘MY TEAM’!!!!!!!!!LOL.

    38. seweatherman1 says:

I don’t look for Peyton to go anywhere. I’m not so sure that the Colts are going to go with Luck. They may go with RGIII if Payton is going to be able to play next year. If he isn’t then he will retire and the Colts pick up Luck.

    39. BeastFromEast92 says:

I’ll wear Orange today, but nobody will see me,except for my family and neighbors, the roads are slick,so I’m staying in until tomorrow, went out yesterday and got food, beer, and wife’s smokes!

    40. 1nOnlyTRB says:

Im glad he didn’t start Tebow because Tebow really might have saved his Job … which woulda ruined the organization because McDaniels sucked. But I credit him for seeing the “IT” fator.

Credit Fox for starting Tebow even tho players and assistant coaches protested. Guess he wasn’t lying when he said he wanted a gamer. But pressure made him go with Orton. (Or at least thats how the story is spun now. We will never know but that Gamer statement always rang home with me)

Great article from woody. Enjoyed reading it. And enjoyed the Brady Comparisons. Hopefully Tebow does it in his 2nd year like Brady. Go Broncos. Only YOU stand in the way of your selves making the playoffs.

      TRB

    41. seweatherman1 says:

WOW! A blue car just drove by my home decked out in Bronco colors-flying the Bronco flag and all decaled up. I wish they would come by so I could get some pics of it. That’s neat, here in SW FL!

    42. BeastFromEast92 says:

weatherman,RG3 is picked to go top 5,so you may be right.
I like RG3,but I think if you got the #1 pick, and questions about Manning, you have to take Luck, just me.

    43. 1nOnlyTRB says:

Scalp the chiefs. I might be interested in your friend man … 30 dollar jersey sounds fantastic. All my jerseys are either old, lost, or not on the roser any more … need a new one lol

    44. ScalptheChiefs says:

I dont see Peyton playing anywhere but Indy if he does play at all, wouldnt hurt Luck to sit for a year behind one of the best would it?

    45. BeastFromEast92 says:

      Hey weatherman,holler at’em and tell’em to drive up to TN,so I can see it,lol.

    46. BeastFromEast92 says:

TRB, hell ya brother I have a bunch of buddies that want in on it too. Ill find out an exact date when heginx s taking an order… In the meantime ill get some pics or something I can send you because Im telling you man they are solid… I got my Miller jersey from him.

But its funny you mentioned that about having out of date jerseys, I have this terrible ginx where I get a guys jersey and he is released or traded within months after… Hence why I do not own a Tebow jersey yet lol. Some examples include Javon Walker, Cutle,r Marshall and I know Moreno has been banged up pretty much all the time but he was injured like the next game after I got his jersey… Its terrible man lol

    49. ScalptheChiefs says:

I apologize about the typos guys Im jus getting settled after night shift lol

    50. brian_schneider says:

One thing that really concerns me is, we’re playing at NE..against Brady, the refs are probably going to be very nitpicky on hits to him. I’m talking throwing a flag for glancing contact with his knee. So we just need to make sure and play aggressive and smart and not commit penalties. The things we can control, penalties and turnovers, we’ve got to not commit any. I’m so excited, I actually have something to be happy about in January..usually this time of year the only thing I have to look forward to is spring haha.
