Orange Crush

October 3rd, 2011 - 6:34pm by Kenny Legan

Starting next season, Orange Sunday will be a regular occurrence.

In 2012, the Broncos will don their orange jerseys for home games, with the navy blue jersey switching to their alternate threads. The NFL has officially approved the Denver Broncos’ request to make the swap.

The change started with the fans.

The Broncos received nearly 2,000 fan emails from all 50 states and 32 countries, some from as far away as Azerbaijan, South Korea and Tanzania, asking for the switch. What’s more, almost 10,000 people signed an online petition to get the Broncos primarily in orange.

“Our fans made it clear that they wanted us to make the switch to orange jerseys,” Broncos President Joe Ellis said. “We’re happy to announce that we will make the change, starting next season.”

The orange jerseys, which the Broncos wore for their first game this season against the Oakland Raiders — and will be worn again on Oct. 30 against Detroit — will be the primary home uniform. The now-alternate navy blue jerseys can be worn up to two times at Sports Authority Field at Mile High.

As Ellis said, it’s what the fans wanted. What do you all think?

    Good Morning Bronco Country!!
There is a reason that qbs get the blame and the credit when a team wins or loses. They get the ball every snap. They make decisions on where it goes from there. They are responsible for leading the team to victory.
Who else gets the blame or credit? The coaches. So, we are out with the old coach and in with the new and we are still losing. Why are we not looking at the qb position? Because Orton is better? Better at what? Winning?…..Isn’t that what EFX said they want to do?

Yep, our defense needs more work, and yep, our offense needs more work. I was looking at some stats thrown up here a few blogs back…. the average number number of points scored in games has dropped significantly over the last few years. Until we have that solid orange crushing defense back we need a spark on the offense. McGahee is a step in the right direction….it is time to take another step.

I am looking forward to knowing what it feels like to be a fan of a winning team.

The QQ has been a distraction and a frustration to the fans. I’m as frustrated as the next guy with our QQ, but I do think it has taken away the fact that our defense still has a lot of work to do. Our defense is giving up a lot of big plays. Probably because Moore is new, Dawk has lost a step (seemyling anyways), and Champ has been out. The one game we’ve done ok as a secondary was the Raiders, but then our run D didn’t show up.

  3. BroncoRoyaltyEst.1979 says:

Everybody knows that this QQ isn’t going anywhere as long as losses pile up. Paige holds no punches; Calls on Fox to deal with it

With one-quarter of the Broncos’ season completed, John Fox is aggravated by the team’s NFL ranking of 24th on offense and 23rd on defense, exasperated by the offense’s 11 turnovers (tied for league worst), infuriated by a 1-3 start.

And the coach genuinely is frustrated by the ever-escalating hullabaloo overpowering, engulfing and orange-crushing the franchise, the players, the coaches, the executives, the owner, the season-ticket holders, the billboard companies, the barflies and media mosquitoes and virtually every man, woman and child in Colorado.

    One hyphenated word: Timtebow-Kyleorton.

Fox’s eyes were bloodshot Monday afternoon, not just because the Broncos had been subjugated by the Packers, and the flight home was dispirited, and he had spent hours studying tapes that were unkind.

There is The QB Quandary, Question, Quarrel.

It’s not as if Fox hasn’t gone through quarterback situations. Last year the Panthers had rookie Jimmy Clausen from Notre Dame (hello, Brady Quinn), and there had been controversial issues at the position in Carolina previously.

    But, never this cause celèbre.

If Fox thought the matter would go away when the season began, he has to think again. The starting quarterback’s eight turnovers (six interceptions and two fumbles) and the Broncos’ three losses have exacerbated the problem.

John Elway had to know better. He was here for the Elway-Steve DeBerg quarterback arguments.

The squabbles are not only vibrant on the streets of Denver. There is division everywhere inside and outside the organization.

Pat Bowlen and Elway debate; Elway and Brian Xanders discuss; EFX — Elway, Fox and Xanders — ponder; offensive coordinator Mike McCoy, quarterbacks coach Adam Gase and Fox deliberate; other assistants and players share their private opinions.

Xanders isn’t telling Fox what to do. And Elway will not overrule the coach.

Truth is, EFX is 1-1-1 on the two quarterbacks.

    So Fox breaks the tie.

“You can end this,” I said — the declaration wasn’t defiant — to Fox after his news conference Monday.

He believed I had a specific way out, but he would be wrong.

    The Broncos’ options are:

Announce that Kyle Orton will be the starter for the entire season, and some among us may shut up and see what happens.

Grin and bare it, and switch to Tim Tebow if the Broncos lose to the Chargers, at Miami, to the Lions, at Oakland, at Kansas City or whenever.

    Trade or release Orton.

    Trade or release Tebow.

    Start Quinn.

Only one of those alternatives will stop the epic spat, though.

Fox is no fool. He realizes that the simple solution — for outside antagonists — is to replace Orton with Tebow. Fox can become an instant hero by making a change at quarterback.

But, as he acknowledged Monday, he is more concerned about those who devote “full time” to the football profession.

He doesn’t want to lose the locker room, although so far the locker room has proven to be full of losers. (And players sincerely care more about themselves than they do about who is the quarterback.)

He doesn’t want to bench Orton because he knows Orton will go south on him in a contract year.

He doesn’t want to give in to the chants and the shrieks.

And he does want to win seven or eight games as a move in the right direction toward the Packers, the team the Broncos aspire to be.

“There are no what-ifs,” Fox said Monday. “Kyle Orton is the quarterback.”

At least he didn’t utter that “best chance to win” cliche.

Fox revealed his frustration by saying that nobody seems to be talking about Von Miller, who has four sacks, or rookie offensive tackle Orlando Franklin.

Everybody is talking about a starting quarterback and a backup quarterback, because people don’t really care about linebackers and right tackles, and quarterback is the most important position in all of sports — see Aaron Rodgers — and has been in Denver since a kid named Elway came to town.

In training camp — after the Broncos tried to trade Orton — the subject was quarterbacks.

After one-quarter of the season the focus is on quarterbacks.

After the second quarter and the game in Oakland and the third quarter and the game in Minnesota, the questions will be about quarterbacks.

After the season, the theme will be: Tebow or Luck.

    Deal with it, Coach.

No mater what happens if losses continue to mount Fox will simply have this QQ on his hands. This town has been hell-bent on getting a REAL franchise QB since the days of Elway, and by the look of things, it’s not going to get much easier on Fox.

  4. BroncoRoyaltyEst.1979 says:

Not only does the Offense look dismal with a 24 ranking, but the Defense now drops to 23rd, as Fox tries to rally the troops.

    Lindsay H. Jones

Coach John Fox gathered every Broncos player into the main meeting room at the team’s Dove Valley headquarters Monday afternoon, dimmed the lights and rolled the tape.

This is one of Fox’s quarterly rituals, a full-squad, state-of-the-team film session. And after Sunday’s 49-23 loss at Green Bay, it was a sobering one.

What the Broncos saw, as a group, was a team in the midst of what could be a lengthy rebuilding process. The Broncos knew they had flaws after three-point losses to Oakland and Tennessee and a two-point victory over Cincinnati. The Packers just exposed them.

“Let’s not lose touch with reality here. This is a 4-12 football team (last year) that’s under a new staff. We’re four games into it and we’re 1-3,” Fox said. “That’s the reality. That’s where we are.”

Moving forward into the second quarter of the season, starting with Sunday’s home game against perennial AFC West favorite San Diego, Fox said he needs to see all-around improvement, from the head coach down to the players. That includes Kyle Orton, though Fox reiterated Monday what he said Sunday in Green Bay — that he has no plans to change quarterbacks.

Fox emphasized that flipping the team’s minus-6 turnover margin — tied with Philadelphia for second-worst in the NFL behind Pittsburgh — is a priority.

Fox refused to place the blame for all of Orton’s turnovers on the quarterback.

“I can’t sit here and honestly say they’re all on him,” Fox said. “I’d be lying if I did.”

Which brings us back to the full-squad film session. Fox said re-watching the full 60-minute game as a team, instead of broken up into position groups is a more efficient use of time and is a reminder that there are things to fix with every player and every position.

“It’s good to see what everybody is doing, mistakes and holding everybody accountable,” defensive end Robert Ayers said. “That’s the big thing. We win as a team, we lose as a team, and to me, that was one of the things they were trying to get across.”

That and yet another reminder, up on the big projector screen, of where the Packers, as defending Super Bowl champions, are and where the Broncos want to be.

Fox recalled his team at Carolina playing the Packers in 2008, three-quarters of the way into Aaron Rodgers’ first year as Green Bay’s starting quarterback. Carolina won 35-31.

“It didn’t happen for them overnight, and I don’t think anybody in their right mind would think it’s going to happen for us overnight,” Fox said. “That’s kind of what it is.”

Anyway, in terms of the ‘suck for Luck sweepstakes’, per ESPN the Colts, Rams Vikings and Chiefs are the most likely holding the best raffle numbers. When asked who is most likely to get Luck, Klis had this to offer up:

The Rams do not take Luck if they wind up with the No. 1 overall pick.

I don’t think it’s a given the Indianapolis Colts would take Luck. Maybe the Colts would take Luck No. 1, learn Peyton Manning has fully recovered from his neck injury, and trade Luck to the Broncos in exchange for Chris Hinton and Mark Herrmann.

I’m not sure the Minnesota Vikings would select Luck one year after they used their No. 12 overall draft pick on Christian Ponder. Many people would, but that would be wasting a No. 12 overall pick.

The Carolina Panthers absolutely do not take Luck after they hit on Cam Newton with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2011 draft.

The Miami Dolphins take Luck and so do the Kansas City Chiefs. And, yes, so would the Broncos.

That must be some welcome news for those who actually want us to lose out in order to get Andrew Luck lol. I personally don’t think any team in the NFL would actually try to lose for a first round draft pick (except maybe the haters if they were in the ‘sweepstakes’ lol) But any self respecting owner/coach would never let that thought enter their strategy and if so that’s not the type of guy I would want on my team. just sayin…

Maybe Tebow spent too much of the offseason doing book signings and commercial shoots and not enough time working on becoming a better quarterback. People that are upset about Tim Tebow not being the starting quarterback for the Broncos only have one person to blame: Tim Tebow.

Man it all orton fault, did yal.see vaughn and dawkins getn smoked like bacon out there? Goodman was getn roasted also, I think our dbs suck, wilhite sucks too. Moore had a decent game but I cnt wait til champ cme back. I know dawkins a vet but I think he should retire or play running downs cuz man he cant stick a lineman right now. Vaughn is horrible, we need to make trades for sme dbs quickly!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don’t know about that Redna I think that there is plenty of blame to be spread around, it could be as many say , that Tebow may not be a good ‘practice QB’, but gets it done in the game – of course we will never find out if that opinion rings true as some point to Fox’s stubbornness in sticking with Orton, but as of now it’s his locker-room to lose. Only time will tell.

Von was an outstanding pick, and it looks like we will have plenty of chances to build through the draft with high draft picks, Shown by the way we’re playing on Sundays.

With every potential draft pick especially the top four we CANNOT afford to miss. We will need all the help we can acquire to bring this team back to the storied team we once were.

The Orange Jerseys worn were always when the Broncos suffered frustration.
So, why the Orange Jerseys? The won’t have a great (Orange Crush) defense for a few years, untile they get better personnel.
The Blue Jerseys represented when they finally did things right. The blue represents the Super Bowl years, where they also espaped a lot of major injuries.

  18. Ohio says:

oh for the love of all this non sense you can’t be serious about letting Quinn play……….and is all this talk in the locker room that the team would rather see Orton than Tebow legit……I mean that can’t be accurate can it, I just don’t see what starting Tebow over Orton would really do to distrupt the team chemistry. Tebow is a team guy and when he makes a mistake he owns up to it and vows to do better the next series out, he get’s in peoples faces and has the intensity us fans like to see, hate Philip Rivers all you want but I love his intensity. Orton on the other hand besides the sideline tirade he had 2 weeks ago I don’t see much out of him as far as intensity goes. When things aren’t going Orton’s way he’s not vocal, kind of slouches and walks aimlessly around the sidelines.

Safe to say i’m not an Orton fan never was, no compassion on the field and there’s no way he strikes fear into any defense, he’s one dimensional. Now Tebow on the other hand proven winner in college and we’ve yet to see what he can really do at the pro level but he’s compassionate, competitive and offers so many elements to the qb position you’d have to respect his arm and his feet…….if we were rolling with Tebow at the start we’d be 2-2 or 3-1……….

  19. whiskeybiscut says:

Tim Tebow or nothing Broncos should move to clevland this is stupid Elway was my hero growing up, and I thought he was going to make an impact, not excuses, he should move back to Granada Hills and work on his golf game. As a vp he can’t make a decision worth a buffalo nickle. I am embarrassed to say i am a Broncos fan. And Dave Logan should take his talents to South Beach and highlight King James!!!!! TEbow or Bust!!!

  23. atrain12321 says:

basicly it says that Tebow is beating Quinn in every stat besites tds thrown. he has the least interceptions thrown at zero. Tebows ratting is better than bothOorton and Qinn. Tebow also is a big play kinda guy his average yards per attempt is 10… which is also better than both of them… and he aslo had the longest play of the pre season. yes he did get sacked 7 times but he was trying not to flee the pocket like everyone hounds him about.

If we just look at what Kyle Orton did again Green Bay.. He had 3 TD and 3 INT. did anyone say anything during the game about how unacurate he was.. didnt think so.

Now lets say that Tebow was in and had the exact same stats. What would everyone be saying??

Thank you sincerely for responding to our posts alot of writers do not or just will not do that.
I’d like to offer a retort to your response of my post. You added, “One of the points i’m making is this: why have buyers remorse after just four games? That seems pretty quick to me.”

My original post states: “It’s when you start to have the ‘buyers remorse’ type feelings is when you start to get frustrated, for many thats already the case.

For me, that hasn’t kicked in… yet.”

Maybe you missed the end of the quote and I just wanted to clear that up, for the record, if you will. lol

As far as the PR type statements it was made clear that when the new regime would take the helm that there would be more transparency, yet they try and trade Orton towards the beginning of the season.

If that trade would have gone through then we would have Quinn or Tebow as the starting QB.

When the deal falls through they say: “Orton gives us the best chance to win now.” Then why try and trade him in the first place? If he gives us the best chance at winning then the organization should’ve never offered him for trade. To me It’s those inconsistencies, those types of comments that seem to be the PR type.

Thank you for your time and thank you for responding to us here on this blog. It is truly appreciated and again, a great column!
