Opponent Rewind: Vikings-Falcons

November 30th, 2011 - 10:59am by Stuart Zaas

In Week 12 action against the Falcons, Minnesota fell behind early and wasn’t able to complete the comeback on the road in Atlanta, falling 24-14.

Toby Gerhart got the start at running back in place of the injured Adrian Peterson and finished with 44 yards on 17 carries (2.6 avg.) and one touchdown.

It was Gerhart’s 1-yard rushing touchdown that put the Vikings on the board with 3:58 remaining in the third quarter, cutting their deficit to 17-7.

Minnesota got to within three on a 39-yard touchdown pass from Christian Ponder to Percy Harvin early in the fourth quarter, but Matt Ryan connected with Michael Palmer on a 3-yard touchdown pass later in the quarter to seal the game for the falcons.

Ryan posted a season-best 128.2 passer rating against the Vikings. He finished 27-of-34 for 262 yards and three touchdowns with zero interceptions.

For Minnesota, Ponder connected on 17-of-25 passes for 186 yards and one touchdown. Harvin led the team’s receivers with eight catches for 95 yards and one touchdown.

Must be a good day, it’s my birthday too. Have a good one!

  3. gabeharter says:

Happy birthday! after reading those stats i am wishing i had been a little less conservative on my score prediction…… i think Broncos will dominate. RISKY i hope you are right bt i am a huge optimistic fan and i think you r shooting high bt i like that. haha

  4. risky305 says:

    HBD Gary

  5. risky305 says:

I mean come on Gabe..How are the Vikes going to score? No running game, Injured Recievers, secondary hurting, o and the option makes jared Allen a non facter like tamba hali

  6. lonewolf7 says:

Happy Birthday Gray! Thanks for all you guys do for the fans and this blog.

    Keep it up.

    Go Broncos!

  7. royalbroncofan1 says:

Happy Birthday Gray and thanks for the great moderation job!

  8. millerqbkiller says:

wow lots of birthdays have a good one guys.

  9. gabeharter says:

I think we might dominate. but i think ur int’s guess is high even 4 a rookie qb. i hope u r ryte! I have been wanting to c more int’s! r d is playing lights out…. only ints could make it sweeter we have seen several fumble and sacks. a couple ints bt nt much this yr…. as of yet.

  10. gabeharter says:

What is crazy is the way r D has played the last couple of games makes me actually think your crazy prediction could happen! I hope its like you say. Total domination and a breakout game 4 tebow on passing. He alreaty dominates evry other category. Best win ration other than Aaron rodgers as starting qb this season… i kno that has been helped by our D. i dont claim he is half as gd as rodgers yet BUT i dont see how people say orton was gd tebow is bad and can say that with a striaght face…. look at our record…. something major happened. idc if its tebows leadership or his skill he gets it done. i think he inspires guys to step it up.

  11. gabeharter says:

millerqbkiller…. haha i like that SN.

  12. shaztah says:

Happy Birthday Gray, Turtle and RH….. Mine is December 12th. My prediction is Denver 27 Minn. 10. I also bet that Miami beats the raiders cuz field goals won’t cut it against Miami. Then WE will be in 1st place lol.

  13. risky305 says:

I think the phins beat the raiders too….Welcome to the leading the west, but I think the raiders have too much speed for the GB Pack..just my opinion

  14. seweatherman1 says:

Happy Birthday Gray!!! You guys all do an awsome job keeping us in the loop. Appreciate each and every one of ya!

Thanks for the article Stuart. I have a feeling we are going to have a good game this weekend. I just wish Percy Harvin was wearing orange and blue.

  15. UKBroncos says:

    Official Prediction Bay;

    Broncos 27 – 13 Vikings

The first non-rollercoaster win of the year, probably the only one.

    Bring

    It

    On

UK is lovin’ it! Poor American guy that I met on Saturday got an earful about how great the NFL / Broncos / Tebow are (in that order). Turns out he used to follow the Broncos and will now renew his efforts…

  16. RH709 says:

Happy birthday gary. Must be an awesome day. Thanks for the well wishes everyone.

I have liked what I have seen from Ponder and don’t forget he has quick feet and will scramble. I don’t think this will be Tebow’s “break out” passing game. I see him improving his comp. % to about 55-57. His passes are looking better every game, but if all goes to plan we play with a lead and won’t throw too much.

The Tebow break out game will be with NE. Where we will most likely have to play from behind against a marginal defense.

Go Broncos!! Hope Miller is g2g.

  17. daddybronc says:

Hey Gray – Happy B-day – I think you ought to mix it up in here more often. Sorry we have put you to so much labor of late – but you’ve done your job well!!!

  18. daddybronc says:

Risky – you are nuts – LOL

But on the right side and I love your prediction!!! You keep me off of Bay’s WOS. I hope you nailed it.

  19. seweatherman1 says:

The official injury report doesn’t come out until Friday evening, right?

  20. killerkod says:

Isn’t the Broncos signing another Orton just cause for bad karma?haha

  21. daddybronc says:

Shaz – good prediction – I think you’ll get points!

for myself, I just have an internal compulsion to walk a little closer to the edge. Haha!

not as much as risky though – he jumps off and then hopes a parachute shows up!! LOL

  22. daddybronc says:

Kod – if we lose to MIN we can still blame it on Orton!!!

  23. RH709 says:

Two of the three analysts at espn.com have picked the Vikes to win. The accuscore shows the chances of us winning at 50% and the Vikes at 49%. I guess a tie is the other 1% lol.

  24. seweatherman1 says:

That’s better than what we have been the past few weeks. We have gone into these past games as underdogs.

  25. socalbigbroncofan says:

Happy bday gray. Hopefully u wont have to delete a handle today from a certain person. Anywayz thanks for all the work.
21-20Broncos. Denver this week taking first after raiders lose in Miami. TEBOW TIME.

  26. Bronco_Turtle says:

    Happy Birthday Gray!

Thanks for all you do here! As a fan I am very excited about the future of the Denver Broncos!!!

    VON TEBOW FOOTBALL!!!

    FTV!!!

  27. royalbroncofan1 says:

Chester McGlockton, a four-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle with the Los Angeles/Oakland Raiders who played 12 seasons in the NFL, died early Wednesday morning. He was 42.

The announcement was made by Stanford University, where McGlockton was in his second season as a defensive assistant. The cause of death was not immediately announced.

McGlockton also played with the Denver Broncos, Kansas City Chiefs and New York Jets.

    RIP.

  28. millerqbkiller says:

adam schefter just in peterson not playing sunday. looks like ponder will have to throw a little more. i see some int coming this week.

  29. seweatherman1 says:

Wow! 42 years young. Wonder what happened?

  30. seweatherman1 says:

I see VONDOOM giving Ponder a defensive education.

  31. 1nOnlyTRB says:

I have faith in our Defense stopping their hobbled offense, but I believe the broncos wont score much either. Maybe more than recent games but nothing crazy. We run… we waste time, we don’t run up the score board and score fast. Running up the score board is the only running we don’t do lol.

    Broncos 26
    Vikings 16

  32. dendins says:

    My prediction – Broncos Win: 21 – 10

  33. millerqbkiller says:

the vikings rush d is ranked 9th in the nfl and there passing d is ranked 29th so i think if tebow were to have a breakout passing game it would be this week or if not this week against ne who is ranked 32nd last.

  34. shaztah says:

Hey Gray any idea when they will update the depth chart? It still has Orton or Quinn as our #2. LOL, he isn’t even listed on KC depth chart at all.

  35. Applejack says:

    Still thinking about my prediction.

So, Vic Lombardi threw out an interesting idea today. What about bringing back Bradlee Van Pelt? He’s just 31 and apparently playing American football in Britain (doh!)

  36. seweatherman1 says:

    Broncos – 20
    Vikinks – 9

  37. royalbroncofan1 says:

Not sure seweatherman – McGlockton played under Shanny back in 2001-02.

  38. 1nOnlyTRB says:

But then again we went into the 30s against da raiders

Happy Bday Gray. For the longest time I used to call ya gary until I stopped to pay attention. Its like I knew ur name was Gray but for some reason always typed Gary lol. Happe bday, have a good one. Same goes to Turle RH and all blog commentors born on this day. TRB

  39. millerqbkiller says:

  40. millerqbkiller says:

rh709- the following is not my post, I copied it from a blog on the Denver Broncos website/blog but it was so awesome, I have to share it with everyone here… Things “they” said he couldn’t do, yet he did. Play H.S. QB Get a D1 scholarship Win a national championship Win the Heismen Be a first round draft pick Things “they” said he couldn’t do that are happening now. Play in the league Be a starting QB Win in the league. Things “they” still say he can’t do. Make the playoffs Win the SB Keep challenging him. It seems to be working

  45. royalbroncofan1 says:

“The Broncos may have to play the Minnesota Vikings this Sunday without star linebacker Von Miller and No. 2 receiver Eddie Royal .

Miller, a rookie with 10 1/2 sacks through 11 games, underwent surgery Tuesday to repair torn ligaments in his thumb. He suffered the injury late in the fourth quarter of the Broncos’ 16-13 overtime win at San Diego. Miller refused to come out of the game. After getting taped, he made a crucial defensive stop in overtime, tackling running back Ryan Mathews for a 4-yard loss. That pushed the Chargers’ game-winning field goal attempt back to 53 yards, from where Nick Novak’s boot faded wide right.

Ordinarily, this type of thumb injury would keep Miller out at least week, but he has vowed to try and play at Minnesota. The Broncos do have Mario Haggan, who started 16 games the previous two seasons, who can play strongside linebacker. The Broncos also promoted linebacker Mike Mohamed from their practice squad Tuesday.

Royal suffered an ankle injury while returning a kickoff in the second quarter. Matt Willis finished the game at receiver and Eric Decker returned punts and kicks.

The Broncos added receiver Greg Orton to their practice squad today. The team will either go with four receivers — Decker, Willis, Demaryius Thomas and Quan Cosby — against the Vikings or call up D’Andre Goodwin or Orton from the practice squad.

Running back Willis McGahee is also sitting out today’s practice. McGahee had a heavy wrap on his ankle on Monday. McGahee has played through a sore hamstring and shortly after hand surgery earlier this year.

More information will come on denverpost.com after coach John Fox addresses the media at 1:15 p.m”.

  46. millerqbkiller says:

man that would suck major if miller cant play. as for royal i hope he can play but man he has had some drive killing drops latley but hope he is ok. and for mcgahee im sure that dude will play.

  47. RH709 says:

Even I dont get full credit for the comment. Tebow did an energy drink comercial with similar language. Its a powerful commercial. It captures his drive to succeed.

I have maintaned the idea that Tebow works to hard to fail. He knows as well as the rest of us where his game is lacking and I know he will work his figures to bone to correct those problem areas. Time will tell.

  48. strandoftds says:

Nah, Von will play, not to be concerned.

  49. strandoftds says:

Gray and RH, Happy B-Day guys!!
