Opponent Rewind: New England Patriots

December 14th, 2011 - 3:37pm by Stuart Zaas

New England outlasted Washington to earn its fifth-straight victory with a 34-27 decision in Week 14. The Patriots took advantage of three touchdown passes by Tom Brady, who finished with 357 passing yards on 22 completions in the game.

New England struck first with a defensive touchdown when Andre Carter strip-sacked Rex Grossman in the end zone. Vince Wilfork pounced on the loose ball to give the Patriots a 7-0 lead. After a Redskins field goal, Rob Gronkowski caught his 14th touchdown pass of the season — an NFL record for tight ends — on an 11-yard pass from Brady.

Washington responded with a pair of touchdown passes by Rex Grossman that gave the Redskins a 17-14 lead in the second quarter. The teams swapped field goals before Stephen Gostkowski closed the half with a 24-yarder as time expired to tie the game at 20.

Gronkowski caught his second touchdown pass of the day to open the second-half scoring and give New England a 27-20 advantage. The second-year tight end finished the game with a game-high 160 yards and a pair of touchdowns. He leads the NFL this season with 15 receiving touchdowns.

Washington tied the game at 27 when David Anderson caught a 6-yard scoring pass with 6:58 to play in the third quarter, but Brady found Welker on a 24-yard scoring strike on the Patriots’ ensuing drive to cap the day’s scoring and deliver a 34-27 victory for New England.

We must contain Gronk, Hernandez and Welker! And we must pressure Brady, a lot!!! If we do these things well for the entire game then Broncos win!!

How do you stop Gronk? The guy is used in SOOOO many ways… Last week caught a touchdown from a Max Protect impromptu Check down when the Defense was half a step too far inside…

Our Pass Rushers will have to take time to check him at the line, if he gets a free release Woodyard can’t stay with him, and Rahim can’t tackle Anything… I hope Dawk can go… But that still won’t help too much with Gronk… Carter will have to play huge on Sunday…

Champ will take Branch out of the game, like he usually does, but that means Harris will have to step up and make some plays on Welker… If we let him get loose on 3rd downs it will be a long day…

I don’t fear the Running game of New England too much… The ‘Firm’ GreenEllis is a solid guy, but from what I’ve seen is easily slowed by a good penetrating defense… like we have with VON…

Bottom Line, the offense better come to play, and we know they can… Hey Foxxy, got any Stick-Em left in the Old Old lockers? it was created for recievers just like ours!!!

VON TEBOW FOOTBALL!!!! :o ) What more could you ask for?

    FTP!!!

We need to rattle Brady, no doubt. I mean really punch this team in the mouth by playing physical .

The thing with bringing the LB pressure is that Brady and Gronk are usually on the same page with the rush. Gronk will act like he’s blocking but will only chip the pressure then sneak out into the flat. We need to mix in some zone blitzing to get headLooking towards the NE game, yes we need to rattle Brady, no doubt.

We need to mix in some zone blitzing to pressure Brady with different looks, get some knockdowns and of course sacks to get into Bradys head and force bad decisions.

Accuscore is against the Bronco’s this week fairly convincingly… It says we have to have 4+ sacks and force a turnover to tip the scales for a victory…

Brady gets rid of the ball quickly and usually knows the weakness of a teams secondary. He is very patient and generally takes care of the football although threw a pick in the endzone on third down. Teams play the nickle against them which the Broncos do when Miller lines up at defensive end so edge pressure from he and Dumervil is possible (based on personnell groupings). Noticed a lot of delayed routes from Welker and Gronkowski to combat the Redskin blitz. The Pats always have interesting gameplans on offense so adjustments will be key as always. It will be interesting to see how Allen and the D attack the Patriot offense. A very formidable challenge especially with the secondary injuries.
