Opponent Rewind: Chicago Bears

December 8th, 2011 - 9:45am by Stuart Zaas

The Chicago Bears fell to the Kansas City Chiefs in a defensive battle that saw just 13 total points scored between the two teams. The Chiefs managed the game’s lone touchdown on their way to a 10-3 victory.

Chicago got on the board first with a 32-yard field goal from Robbie Gould early in the second quarter. The Chiefs responded with a touchdown on a 38-yard Hail Mary pass from Tyler Palko that was deflected into the arms of Dexter McCluster as time expired in the first half.

Ryan Succop tacked on a 21-yard field goal in the third quarter to wrap up the scoring.

The Bears suffered major blow in the first quarter when running back Matt Forte left the game with a knee injury. Marion Barber filled in for Forte and finished with 44 yards on 14 carries. Caleb Hanie, playing in place of injured quarterback Jay Cutler, completed 11-of-24 passes, was sacked seven times and threw three interceptions.

Differene is Bronco_Turtle … is it All brady or part Brady part scheme? Like alex added, Peyton has had a 13 and 3 record pretty much since he entered the league. IMO the man scores at will. The man is his team. Thats why I never gave his receivers and coaches much credit. He changes coaches and he is stil fine. He gets injured and his team went from playoff 10-6 to no wins. Because the plays and the coach don’t matter … it is all him. Brady got injured and Cassel just kept on trucking in that Belicheck system. Its a toughie to select just one but I can entertain the notion of Peyton Manning as THE GOAT. Complete QB who audibles, read defenses, passes, and leads his team like no other. Only QB to send the punting team back on multiple occasions and get the first down, and the coach lets him because the coach trusts his ability. TRB

I see this “first” thing is still rampant on the blogs. And all over the internet in general actually … sigh …

  4. Broncos LAX says:

Yeah it really is lame let me get on a blog to say that I was first!

  5. seweatherman1 says:

All I can say for the Bears QB this week is “Meet & greet VONDOOM! Your WOORST

  6. seweatherman1 says:

All I can say for the Bears QB this week is “Meet & greet VONDOOM! Your WORST nightmare!”

  7. Broncos LAX says:

To that point TRB the same thing happened when Bledsoe got injured and took over… Brady led them to the Superbowl. It can be argued that it is partly the system but we may never know it’s the only system he will play in ever and he has been dominant throughout… I think he has the goods IMO but it can partly be system I mean the same system inflated Ortons numbers…

  8. rayjr26 says:

    ya TRB, annoying!….
well, i havent been on all week because im trying not to get TOO excited, and all you other crazy fanatics tend to get my juices flowing and then something bad happens and im SUPER bummed. So im trying to stay calm here! :) I will admit that while i wanted TT to be the guy, i NEVER thought that our team would come together in quite this fashion. AMAZING! And he threw the ball REALLY well last week IMO. I can only recall 1 bad pass and it was early on a screen. I would still really like to see the coaches get him going a bit earlier in the game. If i could see 10 passes in the first half i would be happy. follow that up with maybe 15 more passes in the second half (if necessary) and i think we are looking at some pretty good balance on offense! Thats my hope, but probably wont happen! oh well, enjoying the ride for now!
    predicion:
    Denver 17
    Bears 6
    Defense rules again ha ha!!!
    Go Broncos
GET SOME GET SOME, UH UH UH!!

I believe sndvl……is also an illinois resident! With that said, much like other bloggers NOT living in Colorado and in other states you obviously see and hear more about the “home” state team than someone that don’t. With that said; here are some things I am concerend with:

    1. The Bears defense has SPEED! They cover side line to side line like no other team in the NFL. Briggs and Urlacher are notoriously known for keeping it contained on the edges.

    2. Chicago’s ability to create defensive take aways! Lovie Smith preaches this as much as tackling. For years Bears fans would SCREAM about “just make the tackle” they instead will hold you up and punch at the ball. This philosophy has created more defensive points and points off turnovers than any other team in a 5 year history! DENVER IS GOING TO HAVE TO PROTECT THE FOOTBALL!

    3. Julius Peppers has to be held in check. With the read option being a possible “threat” don’t be surprised to see Peppers lined up as a hybrid DT to help stop the run of McGahee, Ball and Tebow.

    4. Robbie Gold has a good strong leg. 50 yds does not present anymore of a problem than it would for our Prater!

    5. Hester…what’s the plan. Kickoffs should sail out of bounds EVERYTIME! However, if we find ourselves in constant 3 and longs not able to convert having to punt, it could spell a long day. If punts are the case keep them HIGH to allow the cover team to cover. This is going to result in shorter punts in yardage putting our defense in more intense situations with better than average field position. We can’t let Hester be the difference.

    Some other notables:

    1. Jennings the CB is in his first year as a starter. He has played well but both him and Conte’ (their safety) have a tendancy to “bite” on the play action. They are going to have to play well disciplined football.

    2. Tillman is their goto DB….he’s a veteran and plays at a high level with defensive takeaways being his strength. Punching the ball after the catch. I look for DT to have another big game with Decker being covered by Tillman. DT’s size and height is a plus against Jennings.

    3. I look to see Barber running hard and fast for the first quarter and half….After that his limited time at RB and in the Denver thin air is going to wear on him. Collieo Bell is their 3rd string RB who might not have seen any game time action this year. Stamina cold hurt their running game in Denver with Forte’ out! Barber is not equipped to be an every done back!

…just some things that I think could be game changers…we all know what Denver has to do offensively….Now for some bulletin board material…

Hub Arkesh (sp) is senior editor of pro football weekly (i believe that is the name of it) He is a regular Chicago Bear guest visiting the sports radio station on a weekly basis if not daily. He also has his own show in Chicago where he previews Bears games. He is a “unviersal” football man but whose roots are in Chicago. Here is what he said in a recent Bear radio station interview:

“Guys, this Denver thing comes to a stop on Sunday! I’m almost so certain the Bears are going to win that I’m thinking about putting it as my lock pick of the week!”

    ….uh….really??????

we will certainly see….however, if Denver wins you can bet your a$$ I can’t wait to hear what good ol’ hub has to say then!

Denver, you’re home! THIS IS OUR HOUSE! FLIP THE COIN PLAY THE GAME AND SEND CHICAGO HOME PACKING ANOTHER LOSS!

    GO GET EM’ BOYS!

  10. strandoftds says:

Bears can`t make a drive on the offense, their horrid. They won`t even score a TD unless it`s by Hester on ST`s.

  11. Broncfalls says:

Make no mistake about it! This game IS NOT about their offense against our defense……

It is CLEARLY 150% going to be our offense against their defense!

    GO GET EM’ BOYS!

  12. daddybronc says:

Hey Bay – I shed a tear with Strand – that was beautiful man!!! LOL

It looked to me like I primed that pump – I meant no disrespect – reading back through it looked like I was lumping you in with Carnage. No such thought ever crossed my mind.

  13. Broncfalls says:

    strandoftds,

I agree with you 100% my friend…but you know what scares me about that?

I’m afraid that this coaching staff has SO MUCH confidence in our defense aginst their offense that they won’t mind kicking to Hester and rolling the dices on punts.

If Hester is constantly putting them in good field position it means only one thing!!!!

We are not moving the chains and having to punt often!!!!

if we are constantly punting, we aren’t scoring. Kickoffs will fly out of bounds everytime in Denver. If you give him multiple opportunities HE WILL BURN YOU!

We have to find a way to keep that defense guessing and move the chains….if we do punt….we better be on the other side of the 50 so it is less likely to be returned and less likely they’re offense can move it that far on our defense!

    GO GET EM’ BOYS!

  14. strandoftds says:

we`ll come away with a win, I`m confident of that. We score two TD`s and the Bears won`t even make the difference in that.

  15. strandoftds says:

Broncfalls, I agree with you. This could be a defensive game on both sides of the ball. It might evenbe a very low scoring game like 12-9 or something, who knows, but stopping Hester is KEY. Not Barber, not Knox but Hester alone. Thats my opinion anyway.

  16. OrangeTsunami says:

I agree that whoever wins the turnovers and S/T battle, wins the game..

  17. RabidOrange says:

    Denver – 24
    Chicago – 18

  18. strandoftds says:

OT, I wrote you a little story on the last blog.

  19. Bronco_Turtle says:

Just because a team is solely built around one player does not make him the Best ever at his position…

I would be more inclined to give him some extra credit, but it wasn’t always Peyton… When Dungy brought in his Defensive System Peyton got to win a Superbowl… And when Dungy left, the Colts essentially lost the SB with the same team… Same Peyton…

He’s is a Good passer, and a Good Quarterback, but FAR from the Greatest of all time…

  20. strandoftds says:

Joe Montana and Terry Bradshaw each have 4 SB`s with a great defense.

  21. Broncfalls says:

    agree strandoftds!

  22. OrangeTsunami says:

strand – I remember that well… That is a huge endorsement!! I might just have to plan my next vacation around a place that has an In-N-Out!!

  23. strandoftds says:

I can`t believe it, the Los Angeles Angels just signed 1st baseman slgger Albert Pujols for $250 million big ones. The Angels are my team. OMG!!!

  24. strandoftds says:

OT, In n Out has 4 or 5 restuarants in Vegas also.

  26. broncman777 says:

good morning all, especialy daddybronc..well three days till the game, and im still not sure if i should be exited or worried. exited becouse we should win this game, worried becouse as all of us know, a cornered animal is a dangerouse animal.just becouse the cut man(cutler) wont take the field, does not mean hanni(hope i spelled it right)wont have a break out game.even without forte, its not a gimmi. sometimes adversity breeds passion..and we have seen….passion almost always breeds results..as we have seen with our own beloved broncs..chicago is in a bad spot, so were we five weeks ago..look how we responded.sometimes when your thrown into a seemingly no win situation.. you find out you have a few diamonds in the rough……with that said, i now know i am more exited then worried..lol den-27 chi-13…

  27. strandoftds says:

Daddybronc got a In n Out Burger last night, Animal Style. A Double, Double Animal Style is tha wat to go. Thats what they are famous for. Been established since 1948. OK, I`m done, I`m getting hungry now. LOL

  28. strandoftds says:

Broncman777, out of curiousity, where you from, what state?

  29. OrangeTsunami says:

Vegas is an option… Maybe SD if they have one, so I can hit up the beach and also can walk around town in a Bronco jersey!!! LOL

  30. strandoftds says:

In n Out is in Dallas now, thats a bazarre thing.

  31. strandoftds says:

They are all over the map in Cali.

  32. broncman777 says:

    man..talk about culture shock….lolol

  38. strandoftds says:

Big time, I had to learn to slow my life down. It took a few years. I love it here now.

  39. strandoftds says:

    Is it Sunday yet?

  40. strandoftds says:

I wonder if McGahee will rush for 100 yards again this weekend. It would be nice to see him get it against a well respect rush defense.

  41. Bronco_Turtle says:

    UGGGGh…. No… Not Sunday Yet…

    Can’t come soon enough

  42. strandoftds says:

the Steelers will crush the Browns tonight.

  43. daddybronc says:

Strand – funny I’m and Angels fan too. Though I prefer to play that game than watch it. I’ll wait and see if Pujols can get the Angels over the hump.

  44. carnagebronc says:

Why do I have an ilk and people lumped with me….

  45. Bronco_Turtle says:

    :o ) Hi Carnage… How’s your day?

  46. oldsouthstander says:

    Turtle
Since Elway had a brace on his leg from high school days, there is probably little, if any, concern about the brace Luck is wearing.

  47. strandoftds says:

The Angels also signed P C.J. Wilson a lefty from the Texas Rangers for $77.5 million. Wow, big spenders.

  48. Bronco_Turtle says:

    Good answer OSS… Thank you

  49. oldsouthstander says:

Elway brace trivia: On a preseason away game JE’s brace was accidentaly left behind. Needless to say, he didn’t play and from then on the Broncos carried 2 Ewlay braces to every game and not in the same container or whatever.

  50. Bronco_Turtle says:

    OSS

Since you are the hi point man in the Pick the Score competition I have to ask how you picked this week’s game if you have…

    I’m on record already with a 31-13 bronco victory… so I won’t be copying you!!! :o )
