Off Early for the Holiday

November 27th, 2008 - 4:01pm by Adam Zinser

The Broncos held an early 10:20 a.m. – 12:15 p.m. practice at Dove Valley so players could get home to spend Thanksgiving with family, and by all accounts, everyone was in high spirits, laughing and joking around in the locker room before heading their separate ways.

But we were able to chat with a couple players before they headed out, so here are some quick hits from the day’s events.

DINNER WITH IRVIN

A few days before Thanksgiving, Brandon Marshall had dinner with a Hall of Famer — former Cowboys wide receiver Michael Irvin.

“It was right after the Oakland game,” Marshall said. “I sat down with Michael Irvin after the game for dinner, and he put a lot of things into perspective for me.”

When you’re an up and coming young wide receiver in the NFL, seeking out a knowledgeable veteran who has been there and done that can only help.

“I think we all know what type of guy he is and the things he has been through,” Marshall said. “All I did was shut my mouth and listen a lot. He told me to surround myself with good people, to do the right things and continue to do what I am doing. I feel good with the direction I am heading as a person and I am thankful. It is Thanksgiving and I have a lot to be thankful for including the season, the organization, the NFL giving me another chance and the fans giving me another chance.”

THE TOE’S ALRIGHT

Eddie Royal has been dealing with a bit of a nagging injury to his big toe, but today he said it has been feeling much better.

“I got out there and practiced today,” Royal said. “That is always a good thing. It felt good. It’s nothing to serious. You are going to get bruises and everything over the course of the season. You just have to rehab them and get back out there.”

Injuries like these happen to everyone, and NFL players just have to deal with them — it’s all part of the job.

“A lot of people are playing with pain and this is a big game for us. I am looking forward to getting back out there.”

A SIMPLE PLAN

Some families like to go all out on Thanksgiving, preparing a huge spread of food that can fill up an entire house, leaving leftovers for weeks.

But that’s not the case at the Stokley household.

“It is just me, my wife and my two boys so nothing big,” Brandon Stokley said of his Thanksgiving plans. “I am not a big Thanksgiving food person. My wife is going to do a beef tenderloin, and I don’t what kinds of sides she is doing so it is kind of a surprise.”

He’ll spend a little extra time with the family, enjoy some good food and then get back to work tomorrow to prepare for the Jets.

“When you step out on the field you want to put your best foot forward and win. Obviously last week we didn’t get it done. Anytime you are coming off a loss you want to get it corrected and get back to that winning feeling.”

    Happy Thanksgiving everyone.

Very glad to see Champ was back out there and hopefully he’ll have a good enough practice on Friday that he’ll come back on Sunday. We need him so bad for the Jets game… its a scary thought that he might not play on Sunday. I think he will but you just never know… we need some strong leadership out there and he’s the guy we need for that very thing on our defense. We’ll pull through all this, I have no worries.

    God Bless
    Have faith and stay strong…
    GO BRONCOS!!!!!!

Isn’t this what Brett Favre did last season? He leads his team off to a nice start only to choke in the end. That’s what will happen to the Jets against the Broncos. We’re going to make “St. Favre” choke and gag the game away while Cutler, Marshall and the rest make clutch plays. GO BRONCOS!!!
