O-Line Adds 100-Game Starter

May 6th, 2010 - 2:53pm by Gray Caldwell

The Broncos on Thursday added another offensive lineman, free agent Maurice Williams.

The team also announced the release of college free agents Marcellus Bowman, a safety from Boston College, and Michael Shumard, a guard from Texas A&M.

Williams is a 10th-year offensive lineman who spent his first nine NFL seasons with Jacksonville. Of the 105 games he has played his career, he has started 100 of them. That number ranks seventh in Jaguars history.

Those starts have been spread out across the offensive line — 86 at right tackle, 12 at right guard and two at left tackle. He has started all 16 games in five seasons.

More on the newcomers to the Broncos offensive line here: “A Fortified Front.”

adding depth. good move. especially with the injury to clady.

  2. ovolacto@juno.com says:

I do not know how good he is, but they sure need his experience of front. Good move.

  3. broncoscitizen303 says:

Vets are always a good choice for depth. I think everyone at Dove Valley is doing a fine job. It’s nice to have a fresh feel this year. The transition year is gone. The new team will begin to emerge and we can get to know our new Broncos. Cant wait. Good job coach McDaniels and the entire staff. This will be an exciting year. TEBOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  4. samoanbronco says:

Cant find any stats on him via NFL or Yahoo..

I suppose starting all games 5 years in a row is a good thing, but Garrad was sacked 42 times last season, a fair few would have been his in ability to scramble out of the pocket (I saw a few Jag game highlights, he was shocking!). How many Sacks did Williams allow??

I suppose the Brains trust would have done their home work before signing Williams.

  5. CrazyBRONCOSfaN08 says:

Glad to see that this guy is a proven veteran that will probably be a solid back up for clady and ryan harris (if he gets injured again).

  6. whitebronco#1 says:

Maybe he’s the substitute teacher for the rookies, now that Clady is injured.

    SIGN DOOM!

  7. 4broncosjeff says:

More BEEF, can’t have enough of that. McD and the staff are doing a great job of getting what we need this offseason. We are not going to fade at the end of this year. If the young guys pull their weight, we are going to run over some people this year. I bet our running backs are licking there chops, BIG holes this year.

    Go Broncos

I’m thinking the same thing you are… get a healthy seasoned pro in here to help mentor these young-bloods into something special.

I keep hearing alot about the possibility that the Broncos will try and get F. Adams, but I can’t imagine them giving him the $$ he probably wants, just to have him play 2nd string when Clady and Harris are full strength.

  10. Orange_Crusher says:

I read that over 30% of all Tebow jerseys were sold in Florida… humm?

I wonder how many of the other #15 jerseys are selling in Florida???

  11. baylinorcrush says:

Jamarcus Russel released by the Raiders, hahahahahaha!!!!!!!

The Raiders paid Russell more than $36 million through last season. They still owe him $3 million more but saved $6.45 million by not having him on the roster in 2010.

Russell will now likely be considered one of the biggest draft busts in NFL history, joining Ryan Leaf, Ki-Jana Carter, Akili Smith and others on that list. He will have been paid more than $39 million by the Raiders, while producing only seven wins as a starter.

BTW, this is a good reminder how first round QB’s have gone bust in the NFL, so just because we have two first round QB’s now in Quinn and Tebow doesn’t mean we can buy super bowl tickets yet, just trying to keep things in perspective is all. Also this big guy we just got seems like a lot of big nothing, not very impressed by anything I have read about him so far… Anyway we already have competition at pretty much every position so I guess it really doesn’t matter who else we bring in at this point, we should have what’s necessary already, just a matter of McD making the right choices come cut times.

    BS-
That made me laugh a bit when you made the South park remark on the last blog. I was just talking to a bro of mine last week about the same thing! Every time he throws a TD pass we’re going to yell “Timmy” (the way only he says it!), then of course the high fives and coffee table jumping, etc. I hope he’s ready to play soon!
    Eat dirt Rivers!
    Sign Doom!
    (Yada yada!)
    I’m stoked about this season!
    Go Broncos!

    Bay-
Maybe he JM just wasn’t happy in Chokeland and he was the Oakland’s version of Quinn? It wouldn’t surprise me if he’s picked up by another team they make something out of him (I don’t want to wish someone failure unless they’re playing in Oakland, lol!). Anyways, I have a good feeling about Tebow. I love LOVE his attitude and he could be the team captain that we need. Under our umbrella I think he will succeed, as well as Quinn. I just can’t wait until training camp and pre-season starts and everyone can stop the speculations on who starts where. May the best man win!

  14. denverbro89 says:

Nice veteran signing. This allows Beadles to be focused more at the Tackle spot, and Eric Olsen may move to Tackle as well. Anyone who would like to see John Henderson on board? I think he can move to DE or play DT in our four man fronts.

  15. samoanbronco says:

Lino – I read that as well made me laugh. When he held out for a larger contract that the retard Davis was prepared to pay him, I thought this guy will blow his nut before he even gets through his first full year.

I like how they broke down the cost of how much he got paid for a win/completion:
“That means Russell has been paid more than $5 million per win, more than $2 million per touchdown pass and more than $100,000 per completion.” ~ ESPN.com

Your a reall winner Davis HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

  16. BeastFromEast92 says:

Keep building that MASSIVE Oline, and maybe, just maybe we can have a good running game this year,I love a good ground and pound rushing attack,I hope we don’t shy away from it.

  17. BeastFromEast92 says:

The Raiders get everything they deserve,as long as Al Davis is the owner, they’ll suck.

  18. BroncosRmyReligion says:

    Love it!!!!

More o-line means more carries of the rock. McDenver is bringing the running game back to Denver. 1st pick as HC…RB, next years draft… O-line…only means mcd is building a running game and since he just found his QB with Tebow… oh giggity. I just hope McD doesn’t take his ability to run the ball away(turning him into a pocket passer), that would just take 50% of Tebow’s plays away from him. I understand he needs to take snaps from under center and learn this, but… if a defense is only prepared for Tebow in the pocket and not for Tebow in the pocket and the possibility to run for a 1st…

    So So Excited!!!! GO BRONCOS!!!!!

  20. weareamr says:

    “PAY DOOM” Go Broncos!!!

  21. baylinorcrush says:

Bowlen needs to pay Doom, McD needs to coach the team, just saying.

  22. baylinorcrush says:

Religion, McD is bringing back the running game to Denver? Wow I’m completely missing that, hope you are right.

  23. baylinorcrush says:

OC, I don’t know where Marshall ranks in jersey sales, but he is not in the top twenty:

    1. Tim Tebow
    2. Donovan McNabb
    3. Drew Brees
    4. Peyton Manning
    5. Brett Favre
    6. LaDainian Tomlinson
    7. Tony Romo
    8. Ndamakong Suh
    9. Sam Bradford
    10. Troy Polamalu
    11. Mark Sanchez
    12. Kevin Kolb
    13. Eli Manning
    14. Reggie Bush
    15. DeSean Jackson
    16. Tom Brady
    17. Miles Austin
    18. Eric Berry
    19. Aaron Rodgers
    20. Jeremy Shockey

  24. BeastFromEast92 says:

Baylin,me too,I hate to be one dimentional on offense, remember before we got TD,we werent a very good running team, remember Sammy Winder and steve Sewell, they both were good solid Backs, but we didn’t have the offense line to have a good run game. Then we had Bobby Humphrey,he was a Beast, but still average running game. When we got TD and the Oline started playing better we were the sh*t,weve had a good running game every year since then, except last year it was mediocre at best.IMO

  25. D~J~C~#24is#1 says:

OK, I’ve concluded that Bill Williamson of ESPN is a Bronco hater, he can’t say anything good about us, and his info about Denver is messed up. He has no clue what he’s talking about, I can’t wait for the Broncos to prove him and everyone else who don’t think we’ll make the play offs wrong this coming year.

    GO BRONCOS IN 2010/11!!!!!!!!

  26. BroncosRmyReligion says:

Ya im alright just haven’t seen a good running game in Denver since T.Davis left.

  27. BeastFromEast92 says:

Eric Berry is 18th…behind Miles Austin..WOW…if he was a Bronco he’d be in the top 5.KC’s fanbase must be small because they are going through rebuilding.

  28. baylinorcrush says:

BFE, from previous discussions you and I had I know we both agree that we are going the N-E way, away from running the ball as a main weapon, just a distracting side show is how I would refer to it, and I am very disheartened by that, but reading religion he has a completely different feel for it as he believes the fact that we are beefing up the O line is to run the rock, like I said hope he’s right. Due to the fact that McD is satisfied with the current crop of runner and didn’t address that position in the draft tells me different, he is simply building up the O line to give the QB more time to operate out of the pocket with the dink and dunk and run it here and there to keep teams honest, that’s all, just like in N-E, hope I’m wrong but I believe, as I’ve said in the previous blog, the days of multiple 1000 yards runners are over for the near future….

  29. baylinorcrush says:

BFE, interesting you are talking about KC rebulding, actually the way I see it we are all rebuilding in the AFC West except for the Chargers.

  30. BroncosRmyReligion says:

Sorry I meant more yards for the rock on carries.

  31. BeastFromEast92 says:

Yeah maybe McD thinks our running flaws were all in the blocking, but I agree with you we should’ve got a PowerBack,we don’t have the talent IMO to be one dimensional. We need the running game,I know a lot of good teams win without having a good ground game, but what do you do when you go up against a team with a good secondary, and passing is hard to do.We need a good running game to open up the pass, that hurt us a lot last year.

  32. BeastFromEast92 says:

Yeah..Baylin,I have to agree with you on that one too,we are rebuilding, some people can’t see it,but I’m starting to.

  33. mikew007 says:

Marshall doesn’t have a number yet….hence no Jersey sales for him.

  34. baylinorcrush says:

I think someone in Miami has #15 and doesn’t want to give it up, right?

  35. BeastFromEast92 says:

Baylin you talkin about JR being one of the biggest busts in NFL history, made me think of another player. He was a QB too,and played college at Tennessee, where he was a great QB,but when he took it to the next level(NFL)

  36. baylinorcrush says:

Yeah, it’s Davone Bess, another WR.

  37. Anonymous says:

Sorry wrong key…but anyway,he couldn’t cut it in the NFL,he was drafted by the Redskins in the 1st round,I think he got like a 20 million dollar signing bonus, can’t remember how much he made exactly before he was cut,but his name was Heath Shuler, now he’s an insurance salesman in Tennessee,I thought he would be a great NFL QB,but he was the biggest flop ever.

  38. Orange_Crusher says:

Huh, the two current most popular players in the NFL are McDaniels Tebow and Shanahans McNabb.

  39. baylinorcrush says:

    Is it Erik Ainge, BFE?

  40. baylinorcrush says:

    Heath Schuler, ok.

  41. baylinorcrush says:

Ainge didn’t go that high and still has a shot at doing something of himself I guess…

  42. baylinorcrush says:

OC, your point is we have pretty business savvy HC’s? LOL.

  43. Orange_Crusher says:

Does anyone else think that seeing stupid people get tazed is totally hilarious???? haha

  44. BeastFromEast92 says:

Why did my handle come up Anonymous??????

  45. mikew007 says:

    I don’t think Shuler ever got a 20M dollar bonus…he signed a 7 year contract worth 19M.

He is in Real Estate and is I think a senator or house of rep….

He’s up there as a draft bust, but he was third pick, not the Number 1 pick in the draft! The other thing is Shuler tried and worked hard. He was eventually injured and retired.

JR was/is fat and lazy….biggest bust ever in my opinion. I’m sad to see him leave the Raiders…it means they may be getting their act together!

  46. BeastFromEast92 says:

Yeah OC…my wife dies laughing everytime she sees somebody get tazed haha.I told her I was going to borrow one and taze her azz,and she quit laughing, haha.

  47. baylinorcrush says:

    That would do it, hahahaha….

  48. baylinorcrush says:

It’s pretty much the same as having a seizure and one of my step daughter had grand maul seizures all the time, so I guess it’s probably why I don’t see much humor in it, just painful to watch more like to me.

  49. BeastFromEast92 says:

mikew007 You are right Heath Shuler is a congressman now…Damn,I didn’t know that he was the 3rd overall pick in ’94,his contract was 8 years 19.25 mil,5.1 mil signing bonus, and was the biggest in franchise history and the biggest NFL Rookie deal ever at the time, thanks for clearing that up,sometimes my memory fails me,I forget a lot of stuff.

  50. baylinorcrush says:

Night you all, gotta catch some ZZZZZZ’s.
