Notebook: Outlook for Sunday

October 28th, 2011 - 2:55pm by Kenny Legan

The Broncos came out to practice Friday with some lingering snow still piled up along the outer edges of the field. But that didn’t get in their way as they ran through a full practice preparing for the Detroit Lions.

Most of the team was out in full force, but there were a few players who Head Coach John Fox listed on the last injury report before gameday.

Running back Willis McGahee did not participate and Fox ruled him out of Sunday’s contest with a hand injury. Defensive end Elvis Dumervil (ankle) and defensive tackle Marcus Thomas (knee) were limited and listed as questionable for Sunday while safety Brian Dawkins (illness) was also limited but probable. Tight end Julius Thomas participated in full and is also listed as probable.

Coach Fox addressed Dumervil’s injury, saying he will be re-evaluated in the coming days leading up to the game.

“He’s been a Pro Bowl player,” Fox said. “He’s got those types of abilities. We are obviously better with him than without him. He’ll be day-to-day and a game-time decision. We’ll see how it goes.”

While Dumervil is listed as questionable, it appears as if Julius Thomas could make his first game appearance since the Cincinnati game on Sept. 18, when he injured his ankle. Thomas has practiced in full all week and would give quarterback Tim Tebow an added weapon in the offense.

Fox said that with the assistance of the medical staff, he’s confident in Thomas’ ability to play in a game.

“We do a pretty good job, our coaches do an outstanding job, our medical people do an outstanding job of getting in game condition in practice,” Fox said. “That’s why we’re out here practicing every day. There’s not quite the adrenaline probably in practice as it is in games, but I’m sure he’ll react just fine.”

WOODYARD MVP DINNER

Broncos linebacker Wesley Woodyard is hosting a dinner to benefit his 16Ways Foundation Tuesday night, Nov. 1, at Sullivan’s Steakhouse. The event starts at 7 p.m. and is open to the public.

The evening will include a silent auction, a meet and greet with Woodyard and his fellow teammates and a four-course meal served by none other than the Broncos players themselves.

“We’re just going to be the servers,” Woodyard said. “We’re serving the food so they’re going to order and we’re going to bring it out so hopefully we can have some smiles and everybody laughs.”

Woodyard doesn’t have any serving experience, but said that shouldn’t get in the way of ability to help out.

“I think I’m just going to stick to bussing the tables,” Woodyard said. “It’ll be pretty fun.”

Woodyard’s foundation focuses on giving back to at-risk kids in the community and working with them. He hopes to be a mentor and positive influence to kids growing up.

“That’s something that’s been lost throughout the decades and something that I’ve been doing since I was in a position to give back,” Woodyard said.

Tickets for the event can be purchased through the event’s website at http://wesleywoodyardmvpdinner.eventbrite.com/.

TEBOW ON TEBOWING

There’s been a new fad circulating the internet this week called ‘Tebowing.’ The official website lists the act as a verb meaning, ‘To get down on a knee and start praying, even if everyone else around you is doing something completely different.’ The pose is taken from one Tebow took just after the team’s win against the Dolphins.

Tebow said that the act of getting on a knee and praying is a serious matter to him, but he’s aware some people might not be taking it as seriously. However, for the people that do, he’s happy to be an example.

“It’s not my job to see what people’s reasons are behind it,” Tebow said. “But I know, like a kid that tweeted me with cancer and said, “I’m Tebowing while I’m chemoing.” How cool is that? That’s worth it right there for that kid. If that gives him any encouragement or just puts a smile on his face or gives him encouragement to pray, then that’s really awesome and that’s completely worth it for me.”

Tebow said he supports the movement and hopes it encourages people to follow his lead.

“I think that’s a pretty cool thing and it’s stepping out for something that you either believe in or that you want to show or if you just want to pray, either way it’s pretty cool,” Tebow said.

    Bay- 23-17 Broncos LOL!
I will not speculate right now on how we win, but, I think our team has taken a new face and ‘WHATEVER’ field at MILE HIGH STADIUM will be ROCKING tomorrow! I will just hope and cheer until I pop a vain in my head! This will be fun as heck!
    Go Broncos!

I’ve been avoiding these blogs, as I realized that they started detracting from my enjoyment last season, but –

Thumbs up to sndvl, in general. There has been much hypocracy in Broncos fandom; respect for trying to counterblance it.

And what the hey, a prediction: hoping for better, but Lions 20, Broncos 16.

    Sigh, hypocrIsy….

    *Official Score Prediction*

    26-23 Broncos

  5. BroncoRoyaltyEst.1979 says:

Wow what a game, that was a good one double overtime, that game was more interesting than alot of pro games last sunday lol

  6. sndvl says:

    Luck.

What more can you say? 72.5% completion percentage. 325 passing 3 TDs and 1 rushing. With 1 interception.

At least we got our “Miracle in Miami”…meanwhile Miami is on track to get theirs…

    Prediction: 28-20 Lions.

  8. BeastFromEast92 says:

Best college game I’ve seen in a long time,Luck and Barkley both are great QBs!

  9. BeastFromEast92 says:

    Royalty it was triple overtime!

  10. sndvl says:

‘preciate it LKW. Been awhile since you’ve been around indeed. Your handle is definitely unique.

For the record, I’m not trying to be a ‘Tebow Hater’, it’s a disservice to my team. On the same note, I’m not ready to leap into the Turbo Tebow Toboggan (aka bandwagon) because its the trend… We will all definitely know the answer sooner than later.

BTW daddy bronc, I read that article too and idk,
that writer was just a little biased. In my opinion. A lot of his throws were just bad. Even some of the completions were due to great effort on the WRs part.
Granted Tebow made some clutch plays. Has a knack for doing so. What I want to see, can he make plays consistently? The great ones do!

  11. minidisaa says:

26-23 Broncos, Lions offense stumbles due to a great defensive effort and the offense pulls off another last minute drive. Without Jhavid Best, the Lions are one dimensional. An underated Bronco’s defense will make a fairly immobile Stafford very uncomfortable all day. Tebow will have enough early success to keep the Bronco’s in the game and a touchdown in the final 2minutes will give us another dramatic win.

  12. minidisaa says:

I was reading back thru many of the earlier posts, some of which were pretty intriguing. I knew there were a number of Denver fans who did not want Orton to sit and with pretty good reason. Orton is not a bad quarterback and I don’t think he would have folded the way he did in his last two games if it were not for the intense scrutiny he was under. I will also say that I was one of the play Tebow wagoneers. I recognize Orton as a (legitemately sp?) good quarterback who is still very capable of winning. With that said, the organization had both a duty and obligation to thier future to place Tebow into the game and either legitamize his salary burden or cut their losses. Hype and fan talk aside, I think this team was destined for a .500 season under Orton. Under Tebow it may be worse, but a few indicators signal differently. Tebows track record is that of a player who is fully commited to winning and has a history of success. His attributes compliment the Denver defense well. Even when the broncos were ineffective last week, they hung on to the football and ate clock. He has a very special drive that Denver hasn’t seen since John Elway was on the feild. Stop before go up in flames and listen. From last season to present his success happens when it is most in need. Aside from the fourth quarter he has been lackluster in pretty much every start. With that said, how may fourth quarter comebacks has he already orchestrated? How many almosts? Elways career numbers were not great when compared to the other greats, but what those numbers do not show was his drive to win. When it mattered, when the game was on the line, I knew Elway was going to come thru, and he rarely if ever let me down. Tebow has that quality. The rest is scary, but the rest can be improved upon. I’ll be honest, I am on the bandwagon, but I haven’t been as excited to see someone play since Elway left the building.

Sndvl – that is a fair statement. The author admits that statistically he will likely have to eat crow.

but…Both of the diving catches were perfect passes as far as location. The one to Fells was threaded between 3 defenders – wobbled like a wounded duck – perfect location! End zone TD pass to D Thomas was a difficult pass but had Tebow made it not difficult – it could have been swatted away. Problem – it took 55 minutes to get warmed up. The screen pass to Willis….did I get them mixed up?….hung in the air long enough for me to pop a vein in my neck – it should have been a shot…not perfect….TOUCHDOWN!!!

Lots of room for improvement – but have have watched Tebow go up against teams in college that were good at run defense and they were rushing 3-6 every down. Tebow has passed accurately and consistently for whole games. Give him a few weeks to get rid of some of the jitters. I just hope EFX can hold off long enough to give him that few weeks. Feels to me like they have Tebow on a short leash. OTOH – if Broncos win this game against Lions – it should secure his position as starting QB for the remainder of the season. Nobody should think that Tebow is secure yet as starter.

[AOL BAD screw-ups. Attempt to re-try.]

Thanks, sndvl. (If I were doing it again, I’d at least add 84 to my handle – Shannon SHARPE at least dserves to be there.) (Of course, I could add so many players, from Wright and Mecklenberg to Bailey and Dawkins… Fletcher and TD…) [Well, iirc, at least Dawkins and Wright share the same #...]

And I do understand your viewpoint. While I hope for the best, I’m not quite ready for the TTT you mentioned, sndvl (also a very easy name to remember). As I believe multiple people pointed out on ESPN, last week’s game supported both points of view on Tebow. While the last several minutes had some excellent throws, we can’t survive a first 55 minutes like that every game. And I do truly believe that Kyle Orton has been under appreciated in some circles and will lead another team to the playoffs. But at the same time, I also am trying not to be a hater, and while some of his fandom has been off-putting, I hope that Tebow does well, and will show whether he can become a quarterback who can consistently lead the Broncos back to victory. Go Broncos!

  15. shaztah says:

Well well well another female. There are a couple that pop in once in a while but doesn’t seem to stay around. I don’t comment often but I do read everything that people write. I too am learning but I try to go with my intuition and before the Miami game I asked Bay if Tim could lead the team to defeat the Lions would that keep him as the starter for the rest of the season and he said possibly but he doubted that we could pull that off. I still have the feeling that we can and will.I also said earlier how Stafford has never beat Tim (in college, all those Florida/Georgia games) He couldn’t beat Tim out of the heisman either. It may have been in college but wouldn’t that play a little on Staffords mind? Especially after losing the last 2 and getting hurt. I am sure he is scared to be hurt like last year and have to sit out the rest of the season. All of these things:
    1) Never being able to beat Tim
    2) Losing the Heisman to Tim
    3) Getting hurt last year
    4) Getting hurt last week
    5) 2 straight losses

I think those things would give him the jitters.

  16. shaztah says:

I also noticed Brady Quinn posted his Bible verse of the day on twitter. Psalm 95. LOL guess they all want in on the action. Too bad Orton doesn’t have a twitter account I would follow him too.

  17. shaztah says:

Well, I guess everyone is either in church or still sleeping…Okay WAKE UP EVERYBODY.

  18. FLBroncoGator says:

I’m up and anxiously awaiting the game even though I’m still sick about the horrible performance by my Gators and their new coaching staff yesterday. I’m hoping and praying for some FL/GA retribution today. Especially since today, it’s GA’s qb playing with a sprained ankle. I find it a little ironic given that FL’s new HC is a GA guy and so is our main rusher today. So far, Tebow meets Stafford is 1-1. I’ll be glad when this FL/GA weekend is over and ecstatic if we can chalk up another win; against a 5-2 team that beat us 44-7 in our last meeting. LET’S GO BRONCOS!!! I’ve had one of the worst weeks imaginable and could REALLY use a miracle today.

  19. shaztah says:

Sorry about your week. I also watched the game yesterday and several of my friends said they miss Tebow. I told them they could watch him today.

  20. raidrhadr says:

Well I’m having my pre-game meal…coffee and french toast and pondering the keys to the game today before I head down to the stadium.

The Lions will be one dimensional today and I expect them to pass way more than run. Brandon Pettigrew is second on the team in catches and yards. We must have discipline covering the TEs. Remember…Von Miller got benched in the Chargers game because McMichael torched him like 3 times. We must fix this. Champ must be perfect today. Megatron is a beast. Goody and Vaughn must also have good days as Nate Burleson is a weapon also. I expect the Broncos to be aggressive in the pass rush especially since Stafford is gimpy.

The Lions run a defensive scheme called the wide nine. In other words the DEs line up way wide in the 9 technique. I hope they try this often because if they do I expect whoever runs off tackle or guard for the Broncos will have a good day including TT. We all know we have had success off guard and tackle recently. Knowshon must step up big time both running and blocking. Their LBs must be perfect in their gap assignments to run the wide 9. We all know by now that the Lions have an awesome D-line with Suh, Vanden Bosch and Cliff Avril being the standouts but on the second level back they are not really that impressive.

That’s my first glance at it today. I’ll see you all from the 5th row of the south stands right behind the goalpost. I’ll be waving both arms on extra points and FGs at that end.

  21. Joy(ful) says:

So I’m wondering…need your opinions. Should Tebow be passing to where the receivers are SUPPOSED to be and trust the plays or wait til he actually sees them?

  22. FLBroncoGator says:

shaztah, Stafford beat Tebow in the 2007 FL/GA game. Btw, I think I read an earlier post of yours that said you’re moving to Gainesville. Lucky you! Enjoy. I miss Gainesville immensely. It’s changed a lot since I was there but it was like Heaven on Earth. Well…except for being at sea level and not having the Rocky Mountains lol.

  23. OrangeTsunami says:

Let’s go Broncos!!! With only 2 RB’s this week, and Moreno more of a 3rd down/screen pass back, give me more Larsen this week!!!!!

  24. 1nOnlyTRB says:

I hear ya sndvl… u just want consistency … and so do all of us … I just feel the comparisons are not even. As far as yards and what not… he threw for lot last yr. He is capable we both agree just not consistent YET. And for a young guy I can only understand and hope for the best. For all the yrds that newton has thrown for … his team jusgot their second win. Im sure its not on him because its a team sport and he is doing his part in a sense but wins over stats everytime. TRB

  25. 1LuvTebow-GoBroncos says:

Yeah girl power! Haha j/k fellas ;)

So excited for today’s game! I just heard on Fox NFL Sunday that they’re gonna go with a more college style offense today so at least we can be hopeful that it’ll be somewhat different than our usual, predictable playcalling.

    Let’s GO BRONCOS!!!!

  26. randy2191 says:

so what i just heard is denver is gunna try and move to more of a college style system offensively.. idk what i think about that

  27. seweatherman1 says:

That may be a good thing. Seems the NFL is all about changing everything about a player, so, if you play college plays, the opposing team has no way to prepare for that because they don’t have that in their playbook. Just might work.

  28. BroncoRoyaltyEst.1979 says:

Yeah I heard that as well — about playing a college type O, with Fox saying this will either work or send the NFL game 15 years back lol

  29. BroncoRoyaltyEst.1979 says:

Oh and (joy) he should have the ball out to the WRs right before they cut thier route it’s all about timing. BTW welcome to the blog it’s cool to see girls get into the game w/o thier bf or hubby pushing it on them lol

  30. WieminCA says:

Here we are – Sunday am – waiting for the Bronco game … I can’t begin to count the times I’ve experienced it … always the same feeling, can’t wait for the time to pass … Denver weather can be so unpredictable – one year in November I was going to a Browns game at Mile High … 70 deg in the morning, tossed a football around w/ my boys before the game … during the game the weather changed, and by the time the game was over it was snowing a blizzard … looks like today should be better …

I think the Broncos are better than media types give them credit for, but not very deep in experience … we are SO fortunate the OL has been healthy for all 6 games – I shudder to think what will happen if one of those guys goes down … give McD a little credit for seeing potential in Beedles and the Center (old age brain-lock) … and EFX for the new RT (another lock – I do have trouble w/ these guys names – damn) … but who would replace them I don’t know – no brain-lock there – I just don’t know!!! … it will be interesting to see who and how our running game goes today … I’m not very optimistic about that … I hope the Thomases catch a bunch of balls today – that will give us a fighting chance … I don’t expect us to win, but do expect a competitive game, and will be very pleased if we come out ahead … we’re playing a GOOD team, suffering from 2 straight losses – not a good time to catch them …

Anyway – everyone enjoy the game – it will be exciting, waiting for the last 5 minutes – one thing TT does give us is HOPE …

    BRONCO FANS ARE THE GREATEST!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  31. WieminCA says:

Oh, yes – the game is SUPPOSED to be on home TV here today … but – I’ve been burned SO MANY TIMES, but mostly on CBS – the schedule will say Broncos Game On – but when the time comes, either there’s no game on, or another game is on … this time it’s on FOX, so I have hope … anyway – the Casino always beckons …

  32. BeastFromEast92 says:

    I can’t get the game,so I’m going hunting,I guess I’ll catch the score when I get back!!!!!!!!

    GO BRONCOS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  33. BroncoRoyaltyEst.1979 says:

I’ve been here in NM ABQ to be exact and I hope they’ll show the game here, right now on CBS, they’re showing the ‘phins giants game and it looks like Moore learned a lil something from Tebow he’s their leading rusher lol

  34. baylinorcrush says:

Back on solid ground again, feeling a little land sick in front of the computer but all caught up with the predictions, an all time low participation for this year, only 48 entries.

32 have us beat the Lions and 16 the other way around. So a 2 to 1 ratio.

Seems as if every year as the year goes on the participation dies down some and one of the reason is that it is so difficult to ever score, some folks just give up, like casinoroyal19, the Champ last year, has only been able to get 4 points so far and did so in the first week (2 more than me mind you, haha), but eversince I announced that oldsouth won twice in a row and that he’s got 14 points, never got another score prediction from him, even so he posted other stuff here and there, disappointing to see guys give up that easy specially past champs, come back on casino and all others who are giving up, a couple wins and you’re right on top. And this week Halloween might of had something to do with it too, plus folks may be scared of Detroit and rather not post a losing score for us.

Anyway home just in time to catch up, take a shower and go to the sports bar for the game. Life is good.

    GO BRONCOS!!!

Good luck to all 48 contest entrants, meaning odds of placing this week have increased, so forget what I just said, you should all quit the contest and let me win it, LOL.

  35. BroncoRoyaltyEst.1979 says:

I can understand why a lot of blgrs didn’t want to enter, I wasn’t going to neither, it’s hard to guage what we got as an O, I simply felt indecisive…

  36. BroncoRoyaltyEst.1979 says:

In my doubt I just plugged my nose and drank the Kool-aid lol

  37. BroncoRoyaltyEst.1979 says:

Wow PP looking like a beast on his punt return

  38. baylinorcrush says:

Actually with my land sickness I somehow missed a page, thanks to double checking, so we actually got 54 entries, still all time low participation this season, 37 Broncos win and only 17 Lions do. And I’m one of the 17 so odds to get some points are pretty decent. But Go Broncos, I’ll gladly give up the points for a Bronco win as long as 3rd place overall Royalty doesn’t get any points to further distance himself from me. And 1st place oldsouth and 2nd place cladybunch both are part of the 17 Lions win picks.

  39. BroncoRoyaltyEst.1979 says:

Uh-oh oldsouth bay and clady picking the lions… C’mon Broncos!!!

  40. baylinorcrush says:

Forgot a LOL in there, just kidding Royalty.

  41. baylinorcrush says:

I know, I’m no threat to you YET, but I figured those two guys would make you nervous, LOL.

  42. BroncoRoyaltyEst.1979 says:

Even if the Broncos do win my score was just a safety pick, I didn’t really go out on a limb, and like the saying goes ‘scared money don’t make none’ here’s to hoping lol

    -Royalty

  43. BroncoRoyaltyEst.1979 says:

Yeah you got in my head with that one bay, man this sucks, I’m blgng frm my iPod touch with a weak wifi signal…

    2 new blogs

  44. Joy(ful) says:

Royalty, thanks for the explanation. I was wondering if that’s some of what was happening to Tebow last week…that some of the receivers just weren’t where they supposed to be even though he threw to the right spot. Undoubtedly, he threw some nasties, but maybe it wasn’t always his fault. Whatever. They’re all working to improve.

I’m consistently impressed at how this team takes equal responsibility for what they do wrong and what they do right. No one is casting blame or trying to take all the glory. After all their work this week, I’m sure we’ll see some steps in the right direction.

T minus ONE HOUR guys!! It’s not on TV here for us, so my hubby and I will be watching online. Can’t. Wait.
