Notebook: Outlook for Sunday

October 28th, 2011 - 2:55pm by Kenny Legan

The Broncos came out to practice Friday with some lingering snow still piled up along the outer edges of the field. But that didn’t get in their way as they ran through a full practice preparing for the Detroit Lions.

Most of the team was out in full force, but there were a few players who Head Coach John Fox listed on the last injury report before gameday.

Running back Willis McGahee did not participate and Fox ruled him out of Sunday’s contest with a hand injury. Defensive end Elvis Dumervil (ankle) and defensive tackle Marcus Thomas (knee) were limited and listed as questionable for Sunday while safety Brian Dawkins (illness) was also limited but probable. Tight end Julius Thomas participated in full and is also listed as probable.

Coach Fox addressed Dumervil’s injury, saying he will be re-evaluated in the coming days leading up to the game.

“He’s been a Pro Bowl player,” Fox said. “He’s got those types of abilities. We are obviously better with him than without him. He’ll be day-to-day and a game-time decision. We’ll see how it goes.”

While Dumervil is listed as questionable, it appears as if Julius Thomas could make his first game appearance since the Cincinnati game on Sept. 18, when he injured his ankle. Thomas has practiced in full all week and would give quarterback Tim Tebow an added weapon in the offense.

Fox said that with the assistance of the medical staff, he’s confident in Thomas’ ability to play in a game.

“We do a pretty good job, our coaches do an outstanding job, our medical people do an outstanding job of getting in game condition in practice,” Fox said. “That’s why we’re out here practicing every day. There’s not quite the adrenaline probably in practice as it is in games, but I’m sure he’ll react just fine.”

WOODYARD MVP DINNER

Broncos linebacker Wesley Woodyard is hosting a dinner to benefit his 16Ways Foundation Tuesday night, Nov. 1, at Sullivan’s Steakhouse. The event starts at 7 p.m. and is open to the public.

The evening will include a silent auction, a meet and greet with Woodyard and his fellow teammates and a four-course meal served by none other than the Broncos players themselves.

“We’re just going to be the servers,” Woodyard said. “We’re serving the food so they’re going to order and we’re going to bring it out so hopefully we can have some smiles and everybody laughs.”

Woodyard doesn’t have any serving experience, but said that shouldn’t get in the way of ability to help out.

“I think I’m just going to stick to bussing the tables,” Woodyard said. “It’ll be pretty fun.”

Woodyard’s foundation focuses on giving back to at-risk kids in the community and working with them. He hopes to be a mentor and positive influence to kids growing up.

“That’s something that’s been lost throughout the decades and something that I’ve been doing since I was in a position to give back,” Woodyard said.

Tickets for the event can be purchased through the event’s website at http://wesleywoodyardmvpdinner.eventbrite.com/.

TEBOW ON TEBOWING

There’s been a new fad circulating the internet this week called ‘Tebowing.’ The official website lists the act as a verb meaning, ‘To get down on a knee and start praying, even if everyone else around you is doing something completely different.’ The pose is taken from one Tebow took just after the team’s win against the Dolphins.

Tebow said that the act of getting on a knee and praying is a serious matter to him, but he’s aware some people might not be taking it as seriously. However, for the people that do, he’s happy to be an example.

“It’s not my job to see what people’s reasons are behind it,” Tebow said. “But I know, like a kid that tweeted me with cancer and said, “I’m Tebowing while I’m chemoing.” How cool is that? That’s worth it right there for that kid. If that gives him any encouragement or just puts a smile on his face or gives him encouragement to pray, then that’s really awesome and that’s completely worth it for me.”

Tebow said he supports the movement and hopes it encourages people to follow his lead.

“I think that’s a pretty cool thing and it’s stepping out for something that you either believe in or that you want to show or if you just want to pray, either way it’s pretty cool,” Tebow said.

Writer of the article I posted above stated that the Bronco pass defense was weak. What Broncos has he been watching?

Lions have been weak in their run D and the Broncos have lots of running options – so weatherman, I think Lions are being coached on run stopping this week.

I’m hoping that McCoy and company can have enough confidence in Tebow to let him pass- pass- pass, and then run. If the passing game starts clicking – If, If, IF, then the Tebow show begins and Lions don’t have a chance. Broncos don’t have a chance at winning with the run. They gotta pass – to open the run. The have to pass to win. Ortonesk – hanging out between the 20′s, controlling the clock – not this Bronco offense…but they do have to maintain possession long enough for D to get a breather. Broncos must now be viewed as a quick strike / possibly lower percentage/ type of offense.

    Hey Dallas cut Tashard Choice…..HMMMMM

  3. pdp1408 says:

    choice is not good.

    DET 28

    DEN 20

  4. daddybronc says:

Shaz – I wouldn’t want T. Choice. Seems injury prone (which I equate with lack of offseason discipline) and has made some game losing bad decisions.

Has talent and probably could be coached, but…. we have a lot of those already.

  5. daddybronc says:

I think Jer. Johnson is close to being ready. I don’t think W. McG is out for long.

Hey guys, new to the blog. I’ve been reading you’re guys posts for a long time now and figured i would get a hoot out of joining the banter and debates along with the rejoice and the euphoria that has long been lacking in our orange and blue hearts for a while.

Im 17 years old and have been a fan since i could ever remember (and the only one in my family) with no influence towards becoming one.
Anyways you guys are awesome, keep up the good work.

My prediction is 27-17 Denver. I feel like McCoy will wake up a little bit in this game and understand that we need to play to win, instead of playing to not lose! I believe that if Detroit is only relying on there front 4 for their defense. Then Tebow just might end up with a field day!
    Anyways…..GO BRONCOS!!

    Fan out of SE Texas!

  7. 1nOnlyTRB says:

No tashard choice please … we are not that desperate … Yet…

Welcome BoB15, I think you are officially the youngest on the blogs now … altho I forget how old doc(cdud) is … prolly around the same age.

Playing not to lose was an orton thing … I agree with Tebow we gotta play more to win … we have to simulate a chaotic enviroment for Tebow at all time cuz he feeds on that.

Daddy Bronc, indeed they will be keyinig in on the run … I hear they usually use a sort of “wide” set on the line that helps them in pass rush off the edges but leaves them vulnerable to run … but since they don’t fear our pass … they won’t run that set … they will focus more on the run and leave their fastest LB in the spy. Or so I hear … so yup … only way to beat is to have em play honest which means we must run AND pass effectively. Thats the key to this league in general anyway.

    Later days, TRB

Glad to have a large spread of ages throughout our blogs, It make me happy how active our Fan community is on this website. These blogs have been quenching my thirst for game day so i thought i would get involved .

Thank you for the warm welcome TRB….

Haha you will be fine … no real rules … just stick to your guns, make no personal attacks and share your opinion. Thats about it lol. TRB

Just like a certain religious organization I’m aware of – “get ‘em while they’re young” … but – it’s good to see Bronco Fans of all ages … but BoB – you missed out on all the “fun”, the KO/TT “debate” … now we have to see production – or – what else is there??? …

  12. BRONCOSorBUST15 says:

Hahaha WieminCa, i didnt miss it, i just wasnt apart of it, I was reading the crap out of these blogs during that time and you guys crack me up!! For anything else that resembles such a blog war down the stretch…believe i will be in here throwin “bows” lol!! I agree i started real young, i was 11 during the AFC championship run and cried my eyes out when we lost!! Been reading up on this site since then!

  13. daddybronc says:

    http://www.nfl.com/more/gamedaypickem?module=HP11_cp

“experts” are pretty unanimous. Sure would like to see the experts start eating crow = Tebow dust and passing. Up to McCoy to let Tebow get his throwing confidence – gotta get that INT outta his system. Tebow – FIRE AWAY!!!

  14. shaztah says:

Well Daddy the experts unanimously picked Miami to win. You guys know that Stafford NEVER beat Tebow in the Florida/ Georgia game LOL. Lets see a repeat and Tebow keep his record clean.

  15. 1nOnlyTRB says:

Lol … weimin .. can’t forget Dareus v. PP lol.

DaddyBronc … they seem to believe we will get owned … but can u blame them … this team has done nothing to garner respect but I think we suprise many… and when we do, like brandon marshall tweeting about Miami vs Giants … Analyst better not say some crap like “Lions didn’t take us seriously” or “They had key injuries” or some lame nonesense like that.

    Credit where credit is due.
    Later days, TRB

  16. daddybronc says:

All the naysayers and ‘no confidence’ votes, feed Tebow what he needs cuz he the overcoming type – but what about the rest of the team.

Royal especially needs to be fortified in the confidence quotient. If the rec. core is running the wrong routes and not getting open early, Tebow is gonna look bad. Tebow has got some errors in decision making still to come, and a few bad passes as well. That is all part of the growing process. I know Carnage and SNDVL aren’t going to give him any space. Doesn’t matter – Tebow will be ok. I’m more concerned about our receivers. Again with the locker room – are the receivers fighting each other over who is going to get the passes. Are they going to get open and keep working at remaining open while Tebow is ducking Suh? It’s those undercurrents that make the diff in – great teams verses the showing off of stud athletes.

  17. daddybronc says:

What did Marshall tweet? Didn’t see that.

  18. daddybronc says:

It’s chronic in the NFL. No credit unless you are the Colts or Pats. If you are Manning #1 or Brady – you can do no wrong, even in games when you throw more INT’s than TD’s.

  19. daddybronc says:

Rivers is also getting a pass on stinkhood. He looks terrible – stats stink – talking heads still calling Rivers one of the top 5 QB’s in football. Can’t wait till the ‘what have you done for me lately’ heads get to Rivers. Glad DEN doesn’t have the SD coaching staff. Love to have their GM. San Diego is going down. Go KC!!! this week….

  20. daddybronc says:

    Back later – have visitors.

  21. BroncoRoyaltyEst.1979 says:

Lol TRB Those “PP Express v. The Dareus Bus” debates were fun, I don’t think the TT v. Orton debates were/are even as close to how fevered that draft pick debate was, good times. lol

  22. BroncoRoyaltyEst.1979 says:

Aww man just when I thought I had time to blog I g2g oh well i’ll bbl to enter my score prediction… if I even decide to, I just have no idea how to guage our offense right now.. ok, i’m out. (baby cousins b-day party — oh the headache lpl jk) later…

Mile High Salute! My soldiers are eternal!!

    -Royalty

  23. sndvl says:

Why should Tebow get any space? He was supposed to be come in and prove those of who supported Orton that we were foolish for doing so. Orton certainly didn’t get much support from the ‘fan base’. Every single play was criticized. Every sack, under throw, over throw. Every turn over. He can’t even get a coin toss right. Apparently.
So Tebow gets a pass because of his popularity? Please.
Sure hes done good things. Can he become consistent? Hopefully. He’s also done some terrible things. Can he correct them? Hopefully.
What I want to know, is what makes him so special that he gets a ‘pass’ on criticism?
Yeah, I’ve heard all the arguments. He’s a rookie. He isn’t a 7 year vet. He’s not a conventional QB. He was successful in college. He’s Tim Tebow.

    Whatever.

I hope my instincts about him are wrong. And I get my serving of humble pie along with Hoge, Dilfer and all the other critics. This next stretch will be telling. That’s for sure. What with the Lions, Chokeland, Jets…they can put pressure on with their front four. It will tell us a lot.
Some of us I should say. I can hear it now. He’s a rookie. Going up against great defenses. Who are able to gameplan.

Anyway, it’s not just QB1. I want to see improvements across the entire team. Isn’t that the goal of rebuilding?

Hope Elvis can get healthy one of these days.

  24. sndvl says:

I still think the evil moniker belongs to an AFC West team in NorCal…

    Good vs. evil.

    Yeah, that was a stretch.

Still, these Detroit Lions — suddenly ferocious after a decades-long nap — have built a rep for playing physical (some say dirty) football.

Look, they’re just not a cuddly bunch, but “evil” — to Tim Tebow ‘s “good”? Lions players had a field day with that headline, posted this week on NFL.com in preview of Sunday’s Detroit-Denver tilt .

“(Defensive coordinator Gunther Cunningham) showed us something today,” Lions linebacker Stephen Tulloch told the Detroit Free Press . “It was funny. It was on NFL Network, on the website. It said ‘Good versus evil’ and they had Tebow and they had (Ndamukong) Suh on the front cover.

“… Obviously, the media has kind of looked at the team as a ‘dirty team’ at some point. But that’s not the way we play. We’re just a physical team that loves to go out there and play hard.”

Receiver Maurice Stovall laughed it off.

“It’s just media hype, and if you’re the type of player to succumb to that hype, then you need to sit down and look at yourself in the mirror,” he said. “I think it’s more of a joke, more funny than it is serious, and we don’t take that serious. And I’m sure the Broncos don’t take that serious, either.”

Not unlike the NBA’s “Bad Boy” Pistons so many years ago — led by a madman — these Lions aren’t about to apologize for beating teams up.

  25. sndvl says:

    Full article at NFL.com

Quarterback Matthew Stafford practiced with the first-team offense for a second consecutive day on Friday, and it seems likely he’ll start Sunday for the Lions, the Detroit Free Press reported.

Stafford was officially listed as questionable on the Lions’ injury report.

Stafford injured his ankle during the Lions’ Week 7 loss to the Atlanta Falcons and his status for the Sunday’s game against the Denver Broncos was in jeopardy earlier this week. Stafford split snaps with backup Shaun Hill on Wednesday but took over first-team duties on Thursday.

  26. sndvl says:

    13. The way the Lions play up front, it will be hard for Tim Tebow to run the edges of their defense. He will be forced to make plays in the passing game because he won’t have much room to operate and will need to be decisive and precise with the ball. It will be an interesting game to watch.

  27. 1nOnlyTRB says:

He gets a pass not because of his popularity but because he is a YUP YOU GUESSED IT .. 1 year pro with 4 starts to his name NOT a 7 year vet. Can we stop comparing him to Orton please. Compare Orton to another 7yr vet. Fact remains Orton was not the QB we needed … now its time to find out if Tebow is. Its just that simple … its his turn. I dunno why Tebow has to either be the one or a bust after every play and every game. What happened to watching a QB develop with hope in your heart? Sure by all means criticize but understand what he is … which is a 1 year pro, with 4 starts and alot of work to do. If alot of greats were graded on thier first 4 games … they would never have continued to start and woulda been benched. Patience is what is missing in football these days. TRB

  28. sndvl says:

    This I didn’t know-

LIONS DEFENSE ranks second worst in NFC allowing 4.89 yards per first-down play.

    And

    LIONS
Team is outscoring opponents 128-42 after halftime (in second half and overtime)

  29. WieminCA says:

DaddyBronc – if you’d like to have Smith, the Chargers GM, you know for a fact there are a multitude of Chargers fans who would GIVE hime to us … no thanks … their recent drafts, and his treatment of players, are horrific …

  30. 1nOnlyTRB says:

Guess its gonna be the battle of the 2nd halfs.

Plus Lions are also 28 in Run Defense … and not so good running the ball themselves … we are gonna have to force em to be one dimensional … passing the ball and just hope our plays rise to the occasion … pass rush pass rush pass rush … at least with Jahvid Best down for the count, we don’t have to worry about that speed on screens … cuz screens beat the rush everytime. Hey yall, I’m new — a girl (uh-oh, is that alright?) — and a Bronco fan in the Iowa, surrounded by Vikings and Bears fans. :) Love reading all your comments! I learn a ton from you.

I’ve gotten interested in football in just the last couple years. I finally get why all you guys are glued to the screens, bleeding orange and blue. Talk about addicting. So hi to everyone – I’ve got a lot to learn, but I’m loving this team and really enjoy reading all you have to say.

TRB — you wrote, “If alot of greats were graded on thier first 4 games … they would never have continued to start and woulda been benched. Patience is what is missing in football these days.”

I agree! I’m cheering on every step in the right direction for the whole team tomorrow. The way this team works and doesn’t give up…the way they support each other…it makes me proud to be a Bronco fan. This is a team worth respecting. GO BRONCOS!

  36. Joy(ful) says:

Make that *the state of Iowa*… ;)

  37. BRONCOSorBUST15 says:

He’s a game time decision Joseph, and wow what a great response to sndvl TRB. Could not of been stated better, where the hell is the patience now and days. Hes coming up on his fourth start and critics are expecting him to pass for 400 yards and 3 tds or else hes not a legitimate QB. Its disgusting, sndvl its not a hard concept to understand that a qb develops over time and can’t be a elite QB within a week, now if he goes out with a 30% completion rate, than i guess there is some well deserved critiquing but if he comes out with a 30% completion rating and “W” behind it! Then why should i give a damn, but hey…what do i know?? lol

  38. Jwscout says:

TRB, agreed well said! But I would like to point out that I am glad that Orton is our Back up. Best backup in the league. He could give TT great advice on how to be smart with the ball. TT has what Orton didn’t as a leader. But Orton does have some good qualities. I am also glad they didn’t rip the Caption position from him, It needs to be earned. Which I am sure it will!

  39. stevecan2 says:

no doubt about it. tebow has got to get better fast. he does not have the luxery of growing with time.it is tebow and the denver broncos. proved by the flip flop of those that blamed the d for every orton lose and credits them with every tebow win. read the blogs carefully, the irony absolutely kills me.

or you could read that some like myself have been impressed with the huge improvement on the d all season so far. and tebow is benefiting from it just as ko was but failed to over come. due to bad play in critical situations. now we have tebow who plays in the crutch but not until then. this would excite most people but not the ortonites here or the meryls of the tv. clutch you cannot teach. you cannot coach it. but what you can coach, he is lacking. same player same coaching,, you guessed it. the coaching is the problem.

  40. sndvl says:

    Allow me to retort.

I’m not expecting Tebow to throw for 400 and 3. I’d take 300 and 2. Even that’s a stretch at this point. I don’t expect Tebow to get better overnight either. (as a critical fan mind you. Cause what do I know?)
What should be expected from Tebow is that he learns how to…wait for it…become a good QB. A QB that passes first and runs when it’s not there. Not vice versa. Tebow should also be expected to make the throws to his open receivers. ON A CONSISTENT BASIS.
He missed way too many times against Miami. Im not expecting him to have a 70% completion percentage every game. But in order to be not only successful, but playoff and championship caliber, he must take full advantage of the open guys.
It’s hard for me to overlook the fact that at one point he had more sacks than completions. (how would that have been received if KO was QB1)
I’m not even going to talk about accuracy, because at this point, he needs to worry about completions first.
Another point I’d like to mention, the health factor. 7 sacks, throw in a few knockdowns and the shots he’ll take running…say it averages 12/game. Multiply by 16 games. 192. All it takes is one. How scary is that thought???

So? Does Tebow need to be like Brady, Mannings, Brees, Rodgers, Roethlisberger…? Well, they all have championship rings and they got it by being pocket passers. In a passing league.

    GO BRONCOS!!

  41. daddybronc says:

Yovi – I like your prediction – noone else has that kinda optimism – not even me. could happen but to do so would cost Tebow about 3 picks. He’s gonna have to pass his little arm off – an the D will have to get it back alot. I wanna see someone pick Tebow – bust loose – and watch Tebow wrap him up.

I’d bet no one would take me on for the fact that if tackling ability was supposed to be a QB skill – Tebow would rank #1 in that category (yet to be proven) Big Ben will be #2 but he doesn’t have the speed. (that has been proven).

Joy – welcome…shaz is also a lady…don’t know who else , not important. BorB – welcome as well.

Weimen – I’ll take on the Smith for GM later.

  42. Orange_Crusher says:

I sure hope Tebow can come out firing some Orange Sunday Pig Skin Bullets…

He needs to show everyone that he can control the offense through the air…

Without McGahee I’m afraid we won’t be able to run very well between the tackles. Moreno and Ball seem to be better at speeding around the edges and catching the short throws and screens. Hope we take that rout and don’t just run it up the middle at Suh over and over again….

I’m hoping the Trench Torpedo will be able to pass for 300 yards and 3 TD’s, one Int, and rumble in for another TD to score 28 points…

Come on TT Put some gun powder in the Bronco Barrel and fire that Mile High Cannon….

Let’s see if this kid can Spin the Wilson!!!!! I believe he CAN!!!

    SPIN THE WILSON TEBOW!!!!

    BRONCOS 28
    LIONS 27

    ILMSDB!!!

  43. daddybronc says:

SNDVL – I think a case could be made that there was only one bad pass that Tebow had no excuse for missing. That was the one in the flat to, I think it was Moreno and that was bad.

The one to Decker deep- TT has a pair of shoulder pads that belonged to two separate defenders in his mid section.

The one five yards over DT – pretty certain DT was held at the line and then he didn’t get back and finish the route.

Review the article that went through every pass. Big diff with Orton is Orton had like 15 knocked down passes in 4.5 games (didn’t verify the # – I’ll leave that to you stat guys who care)
There were three drops that hit the numbers or hands.

The first pass that should have been intercepted – I admit I didn’t see that one but have been told that it was as catchable by the rec, as by the corner that missed it.

  44. daddybronc says:

Be back later – FIRE IT UP – IT ‘S ALMOST TEBOW TIME

  45. sndvl says:

Just saw the clip…Tom Jackson will sit down with John Elway on ESPN Sunday countdown. Looks very compelling!

  46. thecladybunch says:

i saw a crazy stat yesterday from Terry Bradshaws first 2 seasons, he threw 19 td’s 46 interceptions . Wow

  47. stevecan2 says:

I am not forgiving tebows short comings. it doesn’t matter that after a rookie preseason he took over for a3 and 10 team or the lock out pre season this year. it means nothing if you can’t pass a perfect spiral.

where I am frustrated with tebow, is that if you work that hard and say all the right things, the proof is in the pudding. I don’t just blame the coaching staff.

  48. camharland says:

Hopefully we see some “Proof in the Pudding” tomorrow!

  49. sndvl says:
