Notebook: ‘Bring It On’

June 5th, 2012 - 4:13pm by Gray Caldwell

The Broncos’ edge rush — featuring 2011 Rookie of the Year Von Miller and two-time Pro Bowler Elvis Dumervil — speaks for itself.

Champ Bailey is a perennial Pro Bowler at cornerback, a position at which the Broncos added two more talented players this offseason in Tracy Porter and Drayton Florence.

In other words, offenses this season might stay away from the perimeter of Denver’s defense and try to attack the heart of it up the middle.

That’s something middle linebacker Joe Mays is aware of — and excited about.

“They’re definitely going to try to attack the middle of the defense, whether it’s running up the middle or trying to get a couple of quick passes up the middle, trying to test us linebackers,” Mays said. “We’re looking forward to it. (Defensive Coordinator Jack) Del Rio definitely has a great plan for us when it comes to playing the run and the pass. I just say bring it on. We’re definitely going to be ready.”

Linebacker Wesley Woodyard agreed with Mays’ assessment, but said it’s no different than any other year — “linebackers always have a target on their back.”

He anticipates teams trying to get two blockers on Miller, and with Mays’ hitting power, he said it wouldn’t surprise him if teams try to double-team the middle linebacker at times as well.

But one advantage the Broncos could have this year are sizable defensive tackles in the middle of the front line.

“Its going to allow our linebackers to roam free,” Woodyard said. “And Del Rio, like I said, he wants his linebackers to go downfield and make plays. I think that’s something that’s going to help us out. With the bigger bodies, the (Kevin) Vickersons, the Justin Bannans — it’s good to have him back — it’s going to be pretty exciting to see.”

MAYS ON MILLER

Mays said that every player is using OTAs to cut down on mental mistakes and get used to the team’s new offensive and defensive schemes.

But one defender that has stood out to him in terms of improvement is Miller.

“He’s grown a lot,” Mays said. “He can just come out on the field and do things that other guys can’t do. There’s certain things that he does that you just can’t coach; it just comes natural to him. He just goes out there and does it naturally and I look for him to better this year. He’s definitely going to help our defense.”

“The way the guy can just spin, dip and rip — just do all types of things — I can’t even explain it,” he continued. “It’s amazing the type of things that he does naturally. And with the coaches continuing to coach him, he’s only going to get better. So I look forward to seeing him do some special things for us this year.”

WOODYARD TALKS TREVATHAN

When he was drafted in the sixth round, linebacker Danny Trevathan couldn’t hide his excitement to join fellow Kentucky Wildcat Woodyard on the Broncos.

Trevathan said he tried to model his game after Woodyard, a player he said was “just born to be a leader.”

On Tuesday, Woodyard talked about the player who is “kind of like (his) little brother.”

“I knew what we were going to be getting,” Woodyard said of the team drafting Trevathan. “Danny was a great player in college. Him coming here, getting a chance, and him watching me in college and coming in and stepping in my shoes—it’s a great opportunity for the both of us. We’re both going to compete. And I know what type of player he is. Coming from a school that I went to, I know he’s going to give it his all every time he’s on the field. So it’s an honor to have a guy like him on our team.”

Though the two never overlapped at Kentucky, Woodyard said he knew Trevathan and spoke to him often as the rookie rose through the ranks with the Wildcats.

While Woodyard never hesitated to give Trevathan advice and tips as a collegiate, the team captain knows now is the time to take a step back and let Trevathan learn on his own.

“I’m trying to let him learn the things he can do and he can’t do before I go in there and just try to tell him everything he needs to do,” Woodyard said. “He’s coming along real well. I think he’s had two interceptions throughout these OTAs — so he’s doing well.”

I think there’s no one that knows he HAS to perform this year than NoShow himself…………..it’ll be interesting to see how he responds.

  2. alaskanbronco06 says:

Kod very accurate! There is no way he cant know his job is on the line with Hillman being drafted.

Lance Ball still needs to go!!!

  3. killerkod says:

yup, especially when Hillman is tagged as the speedback………what he was supposed to be for us. Hope that’s some motivation for you NoShow! lol

  4. alaskanbronco06 says:

Agreed Kod!!! If he can make the roster and stay healthy he could be good on screen plays which IMO is where he has had the most flashes.

  5. tlcat06 says:

Gosh, I’m glad you mentioned screen plays! They are some of my favorite and were virtually non existent last year!!! I can’t wait for screen plays!

Still flappin those gums like a fish out of Water LP… :) I offered a peace treaty, but no matter, you’ve exposed yourself too many times to just let it go… funny you criticize me as arrogant, then in the next breathe agree with all my viewpoints on religion, politics etc. from ‘Anonymous’ then try not to look shallow by saying ‘hey, that was me’ from your LP handle

Nice work though… and thanks for letting me just be a Bronco fan! enjoy your day in that small little self-centered world of yours!!!

on bays lap. haha well then how have you and i made it this long after bay retired kod? shouldnt we be walking around bouncing off of walls not knowing where we’re at and what to do? loof’s retarded. but thats already been said.
i agree on knowshon i actually liked the pick when it was made but i realized real quick he didnt have what it took. he just cannot blow through the hole like he needs to. he can be a decent 3rd down back with manning at qb but hillman will take that from him if he doesnt impress, and quickly. i wont miss him when he’s gone he just never really did anything.

  8. tlcat06 says:

I find it interesting that you want him to just let it go like it’s easy to do that, but you flat out ignore me because you have nothing nice to say to me. I forgive you for it though.

  9. louisianabroncofan says:

your peace treaty? you offered it right after taking another shot. thats bs just like you. and of course once again it was another bs shot. ya i posted on purpose as anonymous cuz i’m so shallow. right. another brilliant turtle conclusion. you used to be fun but now youre off the deep end. you are beneath me and i have no interest in peace from the likes of you because you dont deserve it. now after you earn it, maybe. but you have alot of work to do before your on my good side again so get started.
to answer your question he cant win with me cat even though he gets the rise outta me he wants. its freaking him out!! youre nice so he looks bad coming after you no matter what so that doesnt suit him. he’s a bully and arrogant in every way. yes he bothers me but he doesnt ‘bother’ me. if that makes sense.

Not so sure Moreno makes the Team this season. It’s going to be a tough battle for him.
Article on DP sometime back pretty much summed up this years draft as “a fix” for McD’s draft a few years back. It can be clarified it was addressed beginning with last seasons draft. Ten players drafted in 2009, only three remain on the current roster.

    Ayers = Wolfe or Jackson
    Moreno = Hilman
    A. Smith = Bolden
    Olsen, Schuester = Blake
Quinn = Two TE’s drafted last year (Thomas, Green)
McBath, Bruton = Two Safetys drafted last year ( Moore, Carter)
    Branstater = Osweiler

  11. louisianabroncofan says:

ya thats a good post there. i see what you mean thats kinda funny. it is like a fix. well i think ayers will be ok but the rest of that class was pitiful.

Test. Can only post from mobile phone. From laptop where the comment box should be I get directed to sign in or register for broncos country message board. Follow that it says I am already registered . Sign out and back in redirects me back to blog and its the same thing all over. Anybody else have or have had this problem. Help please.

  13. killerkod says:

hmmmmm, not sure since1972…………I log in once and it keeps me logged in all the time until I log out. It’s actually nice that I don’t have to retype my password each time I want to comment……….I don’t have any problems from both my PC and Mac.

  14. killerkod says:

yeah rbf1………..JE is def making an effort to rid this team of everything McD……….and I can’t really blame him. I think Ayers might stick but come next season for sure, this will be a completely JE team from top to bottom. This then puts the accountability of the team squarely on his shoulders and I believe that’s the way he wants it……….to either say I built this successful team or own up for it’s failure. PS – Failure is not an option! lol

  15. broncosfreak718 says:

    LouisianaBronco…

Yea don’t take offense to it man. Bay used to argue about everything and would call out people for no reason whenever he liked. That’s just the thing, he just acted like he ran and controlled everything just because of his age. Every time we would get into a discussion he would remind me that he was older than I and so that his opinions/ideas must be right due to his age/wisdom. He was completely full of it and I even told him that. I am friends with a lot of older people than me and even live with someone who is 10 years older than me. My maturity level is much higher than what it should be at only being at the age of 23. But that guy does have some serious problems…

Sure I respected what he did for everyone and would be the first to post stuff but other than that, he was just a cancer on the blogs!

  16. tlcat06 says:

Kod, the best part? I think that Elway is ready to own up to the failure if it doesn’t work. He’s not going to say that signing Peyton Manning was a bad decision, either way though, because it’s not.

  17. broncosfreak718 says:

Yea, I am not worried about our wide receivers. I just watched yesterday two whole games of Mannings from 2010. One against the Pats and the other against us. He had an undrafted free agent WR whose last name was White. I forget his first name. But he was a rookie and came in when Austin Collie got injured. Manning made him shine as he does for every WR. He is soo intricate in practice/training camp that literally any WR can go out onto the field and look like a HOF receiver. And now he has the likes of Decker, Thomas, and Caldwell…Man that is just insane!!!

I know our wide outs were smiling when Peyton decided to come here but you know the feeling has to be mutual for Manning himself!!

  18. Royalbroncofan1 says:

    Agree kod… well said!!

  19. tlcat06 says:

Freak–I was at the game against us!!!!! LOL! It was so hard because he is so amazing to watch and I’ve seen Brady and Brees, but nothing is quite like watching Manning in person. But I wanted us to win so bad. Crazy.

  20. Buzzin_Bronco says:

    Hey RBF1,you forgot:

    Tebow=Manning.

  21. Royalbroncofan1 says:

Like you said the other day kod… the draft is like a box of chocolates…. think JE will avoid those boxes with nuts and bad duds… lol!

  22. Royalbroncofan1 says:

Yeah buzzin – I was looking at the ’09 draft and listed Brandstater = Osweiler. But you’re right another QB drafted by McDaniels replaced by an unlikely FA like Manning !!!

  23. killerkod says:

    lol @ rbf1!

  24. tlcat06 says:

That. Is. Awesome. Buzzin’ All HAIL THE NECK!

  25. Buzzin_Bronco says:

My bad rbf1,you were listing players being replaced by players EFX drafted, not FAs,sorry.

  26. Buzzin_Bronco says:

    LONG LIVE THE NECK!!!!!!!!!!!

  27. louisianabroncofan says:

1972 i had that problem and lemme see if i can convey to you what i did. been a cupla weeks ago. i clicked on register and it took me to a place that said you are already registered. so i hit log out and closed my internet. then i opened it back up and re logged in and it let me log in. i think i remember that right.

and freak alot of people had a problem with bay but i didnt. he and i went at it here and there but it was mostly respectful. he never hit me with any disrespect like he did with some others. and some were overly sensitive and that contributed. he was good for the blog imo tho and i’d like for him to come back. now the people who dont want him back dont bother me i know he was a little harsh to some. its hilarious when its said i just agreed with bay when we were arguing quite often. but like i said never got personal.

as far as the recievers go i think we’ll see a top notch group emerge with peyton throwing them the ball. decker, thomas, and caldwell are definately gonna excel this year. they will all have pro bowl stats. man lets just get on with the season already this wait is a killer!

  28. tlcat06 says:

Well, if we’re gonna do this, lets not forget:

    Rosario and Fells=Dreessen and Tamme
    Royal=Caldwell
    Goodman and Vaughn=Porter and Florence

    Who’m I missin’?

  29. killerkod says:

I know the team doesn’t need the distraction, but I’d really love to see our Broncos on Hard Knocks just to get that inside view of training camp. It would be awesome to see……….

Funny, I was watching the one on the Chiefs and Bowe was late for camp cause he was holding out……….and look at where he is again……..holding out. It’s always all about the Benjamins to some players.

  30. tlcat06 says:

The Chiefs are going to be real good this year, AB and the NFL have finally convinced me. But without Bowe, they aren’t as good. They should just give him the money.

  31. Buzzin_Bronco says:

    tlc…..Royal was drafted by Shanny.

  32. tlcat06 says:

Oh yeah! LOL! THAT’S why I liked him so much. Oops. scratch it.

  33. Buzzin_Bronco says:

KC will be better on Defense because (the 5th dimension)Eric Berry will be back!

  34. Buzzin_Bronco says:

I hated to see Royal leave too, imagine his speed in the slot with PM throwing him the ball!

  35. tlcat06 says:

I think I was just trying to see who we replaced with who this off season and got confused…

  36. Buzzin_Bronco says:

Alright I’m out for a while Rock on Bronc on!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    ILMSDB

  37. Royalbroncofan1 says:

buzzin – with your new handle, you’d think you might be a former Yellow jacket fan from Georgia Tech who’s following DMT! lol !

  38. killerkod says:

I hope our kick cover team is much better this year………especially when we play the Chargers. You know Eddie wants to burn us bad and our cover team was absolutely horrid last season. It’ll be interesting to see what sort of chemistry he builds with Rivers………like I said, he’s gonna wanna stick it to us………and well, Rivers always wants to stick it to us too. lol I’m looking forward to seeing our D stick it to Rivers……..stick it where the sun don’t shine! LMAO

  39. alaskanbronco06 says:

    New blog folks.

  40. louisianabroncofan says:

ya buzzin i bet royal hates that he left too now. i would hate to have rivers throwing to me when it couldve been manning and staying with the best team in the league. oh and i’m pretty sure a chargers uniform is poisionous.

  41. Royalbroncofan1 says:

Yeah – hated to see Royal leave.. would’ve been nice to have him in the slot. Caldwell is also very fast and I think will do very well with Manning.

    Royalty…

I have already said that I never have the intention on coming on here and being a pest or argueing. I have been trying to watch my whole “exclamation marks” thing because a lot of people get offended by them. You do not know me what so ever and to say that I am “transparent” is rediculous.

I really do not want to argue. I didn’t come on here with my post and call out anyone. I have said for weeks that I would love Peterson or Miller because they are the top 2 players overall in this draft. I do not know how many people have told me on here that if Dareus is available with our #2 pick that we will take him no questions asked. I respected that because that was their opinion but to have my opinion and others opinion like TRB bashed down and made fun of is bad. I never came out and said your name man, you clearly came out and called me out, AGAIN.

I would love to put all of this nonsense and childlike behavior behind us and really talk about our true passion which is Broncos football.

Also, MUCH appreciated Bay. I value your respect for me to the upmost care.

Well thank you freak, glad you think so much of me, lol.

Paranoid on a daily basis of nearly everyone who ever questions you and obviously bi-polar to the max, take a deep breath freak and let it go. I’m not on here to defend myself anymore, nor do I want to, so do away with the personal slander b.s., it’s not becoming of the Bronco fan you are.
