‘No Love Lost’

September 23rd, 2009 - 3:25pm by Gray Caldwell

Broncos-Raiders. Silver and Black versus Orange and Blue. It’s a rivalry that dates back to the inception of both teams, 1960.

But in the past 10 seasons, the Raiders have won six of their matchups to the Broncos’ 14. Some argue that the fact that Oakland hasn’t won more than five games in a season since 2002 has softened the rivalry a little. Tell that to the Raiders fans at Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum.

“They create the atmosphere, and you love it,” said LaMont Jordan, who spent three seasons with the Raiders. “The best part about it is it’s early on, they are going to be loud and they are going to be cheering for their team. But if you get on top of them, they are going to be loud and they are going to boo their team.”

Daniel Graham is here to say that the rivalry is alive and well, and even new teammates are beginning to see that Sunday’s game has a little extra something to it.

“They understand that there is no love lost between the two teams,” he said with a smile.

The Raiders and Broncos have split the season series each of the past two years, and this year’s Raiders squad is a few seconds away from beating the San Diego Chargers in Week 1 and heading into this matchup 2-0 as well. The Oakland defense was repeatedly described in the locker room as “big, fast and physical,” and Kenny Peterson said it’s tough to find too many weaknesses on the offense.

So while the players agreed they’re going up against an Oakland team that presents plenty of challenges, it’s the crowd that had them talking in the locker room.

“Any time you get to go to Oakland, the Raider Nation, you hear the fans and the heckling and all that stuff — it’s definitely fun to play in an atmosphere like that,” Peterson said. “I remember one experience I had last year. I was out there warming up and a little kid, he might have been 7 or 8 years old, he waved me over and said, ‘Hey No. 90! No. 90!’ Then I get close to him and he flips me the bird, both hands. I’m like, ‘Where’s your mom and dad?’ — standing right next to him giving me the same.”

Graham had a similar experience, which he explained with a smile.

“A little kid was holding up a sign that had not-too-good language on there,” he said, adding that it looked like the sign was written in children’s handwriting. “They start young. Very young.”

So as the Broncos prepare for their first AFC West game of the season, it’s a chance to head to 3-0, stay on top of the division and quiet a few rowdy fans in the process.

“The goal is to win,” Jordan said. “And if the crowd turns on them, then we’re doing a good job.”

    Get well DD

  2. baylinorcrush says:

OGB, problem is are the players willing to truly help him out after how he treated them? Of course to the media they would say they would, that everything will be ok. Do you believe it? I don’t, I believe certain things, like trust can’t be mended. It will be up to BM to face his shortcomings and consequences on his own, in my opinion.

  3. royalbroncofan1 says:

DD…sorry to hear you’ve been ill. Thought you were busy with other projects. Hope you’re feeling better soon bro! Good to hear from you on the web. This place isn’t the same without your input. Looking forward to checking out fanhuddle!Hey.. we’re flying under the radar somewhat but our D is really starting to crank it up. Granted we’ve got some tough comp coming up, but I believe it’s the only way we’ll get better. NE starting to have problems now that McD is no longer there with Offense. Going to the Broncos/Cowboys game! Should be a great game… #2 Defense vs. #2 Offense. Also our # 8 offense vs. their #28 Defense! (that may change this weekend). Let’s take care of the Faiders first though.
RoyalBeast: ok I see your point…accuracy. As DD mentioned, we will see more zip on the ball when the glove comes off. Confidence comes with time in not only learning the system, but putting it in play. Athleticism may not be his forte, but he is a smart QB. (loved the rollout though and sensed pressure).

  4. OGBronco4life says:

    Baylin – true.

But he needs to start from within. He has gone through alot in a short amount of time. I’m not make excuses for him, but growing into a man is not the easiest task. I know from experience, ha!

  5. broncofan96 says:

man DD that sucks I hope your back on your feet soon best wishes.

  6. TheRoyalBeast says:

Not food poisnoning?!?!? someone actually tried to take your life, just say the word DD and we will find em. Prolly so called fans on other sites you have called out lol. Get better man, was starting to wonder how we saw you more in the summer when nothing was going on than now when theres alot. Figured it was work and u said something in your personal life so wasnt quite sure. Get better soon man.

The funny thing Baylin, is that most NFL players, this isnt their first time seeing a guy trying to act out o get what he wants so they are a little more linient especially since they are players as well. Matt Prater recently spoke on Marshalls character in a new article about a week or so ago. Never knew they went all the way back to frehman year at college. Also, still seems to be friendly with stokely and in a espn radio interview after all had transpired Eddie said he would like to have Bmarsh back beside him. Could all be political BS…But gives a little hope. I learned early you deal with what you can control, and not stress over what you cant and let it run its course. Bmarsh must have always gotten his way and never learned his lesson (assuming he has). Better late than never I always say, not just for the NFL but in his life as a whole. 10 or so more years of nfl a whole lot more of Real life.

  7. baylinorcrush says:

OGB, TRB, I don’t want to sound like I am heartless, I do hope that BM can find his way for the sake of his own life, specially the one after football, which will be much harder, something he probably doesn’t realize, but I just think the writing is on the wall as far a his Bronco career is concerned and that he will no longer be a Bronco after this year or earlier if we get a good trade for him before the trade deadline and after that his future won’t be half as bright money wise as it could of been.
He must be so mad at himself now that he is realizing the implications that his childish actions have caused. I mean it’s gotta be harder on him than anyone else, but he has only himself to blame. OGB, you keep calling him a kid needing to grow into a man…at exactly what age do you figure a young man has become an adult and is expected to answer to his actions?

  8. royalbroncofan1 says:

Royal Beast: Yeah, Prater went to CF. We talked about that last year here on the web.
baylinor brings up the point that BMarsh has really cut is own throat…. bottom line. Sad but the truth! Sorry dude!

    DD… Semper Fi !!

  9. BradJamesBroncoFan says:

The hooligans after DD are obviously Faider fans. Our Broncos will make them pay dearly as Orton only progresses in our offense. If the Faiders don’t get better play from JaMarcus Russell (and they won’t), we’ll pummel them. 3-0 and AFC West supremacy are within our grasp. GO BRONCOS!!!

  10. BrandonBailey19 says:

DD, I was wondering where you were at! I was looking forward to your take on the Defense as well as the team in whole after a 2-0 start. Sorry to hear you are ill I really hope you get better. Your input was surely missed.

I think Brandon Marshall has seen the light. He is figuring out and seems to have smoothed things out for now. Hope he gets more playing time starting this week. He said he was happy so I take him for his word. I can finally dust off my #15 away jersey and rock it in front of my friend who is a Raider fan. Have NFL Sunday Ticket so he is going to come over and watch the game. Have a $20 bet. LETS GO BRONCOS!!!

  11. Paddy_909 says:

Whats up with the black trianing jersey?

  12. bronco-blaze says:

its cuz they play a role as the opposing teams *raiders*

  13. bronco-blaze says:

Like lloyd was playing the role of one of the raider wide outs and what the broncos may expect to play against.

  14. Denwu says:

Wow, Dynamic Dave gets love from all Broncos fans here. Kudos to you Dave. Not to many of us bloggers, especially here at the Broncos website get love like that. I can only think of yourself and Elway07. Took me a while to realize she was a girl. But anyway, hope you get better. As for the team. I gotta say this now and I know it’s unpopular……DON”T GET TOO EXCITED!!! Not to say that we won’t do well, but don’t count your chickens before they hatch. Orton takes the glove off, and in my opinion there is no more excuses for this offense. Remember that we had the number 2 offense….Much more important is the defense yes, but McDaniels is considered an offensive guru. Time to show it this week in Oakland. Eddie Royal and Brandon Marshall have got to have good games going into the Cowboys matchup. The reason I say don’t get excited. Remaining schedule….Cowboys, Patriots, @ Chargers, bye, @ Ravens (I hate this game, don’t think we have much chance in that one), Steelers (prob with Polamalu if not return of Polamalu – Monday Night), @ Redskins, Chargers, Giants, @ Chiefs, @Colts, Raiders, @ Eagles, Chiefs. Is there a tougher schedule in the NFL? Lets be real for a second. I’d like to think that we win all those games. But we all know that’s not going to happen. So I say let’s pick a few games we won’t be mad at the boys for loosing. My pick is the @Ravens game. Also I think that @ Eagles. Close games will happen with the Steelers, Chargers, Patriots. This Raider game is a must win for our team. MUST WIN!!! We need to be 3-0 going into that schedule. We need some upsets. The defense is there, and will get even better. The offense needs work. A lot of upside, but let’s not forget we’re barely 2-0. Easily could be 1-1. But if the ball continues to bounce our way, we could finish with 9 wins and take the AFC West. The Chargers can’t win this division again and we are the only team with a chance to do something about that. I’m curious as to what the Raiders schedule is because if they had a QB, I’d be concerned about their team. Since they don’t yet, we really only need worry about the Chargers. Sorry this turned out so long, but look forward to reading Broncos fans comments. All I’m saying is don’t get excited and I love the team’s attitude and this winning feeling. But we’ve got a LOOONG way to go.

  15. brian_schneider says:

So off blot topic, I watched Marshall’s interview and he seemed like maybe he’s changed his attitude. He seems like he may be heading in the right direction for success. Which is good, I hope he continues to do well and hopefully the way he carries himself the team will see that also.

  16. Broncoboy6 says:

Aloha everyone, It is so great to see that the BOYZ are serious about working out even throught rain and still having fun. I am so proud of what the team has accomplished already and can’t wait to see more of it. Hey Baylinorcrush, I don’t think it really is a matter of age more of how you react and deal with life’s problem. I can say that the day that a person can make descisions, The right ones that is, You know the ones that willnot embarass and let down your loved ones, But Instead, Make them proud and happy, That is when i think that you have grown up. Mahalo & GOD bless.

    DD,

I know we lost 4 my friend, but I was 2 months old when we lost in 1977. Im only 32. So I can only remember the last 3 losses. Hey DD im intersted to see your articles on fanhuddle. Get better buddy!!!!

  18. broncosfreak30 says:

    Hello fellow bronco fans,

Is everyone just as excited as me to watch our boys kill the faiders on Sunday? My friend is a die hard Faiders fan and is actually stupid enough to bet me $20 on the game! Easiest 20 dollars I have ever made! HAHA

  19. BroncoWildKansan says:

DD – Damn thats some crazy stuff. I will pray for a speedy recovery. I thought it was odd you have not been on here in some time.

I am with all of you on BMARSH. He has made his bed and now he has to lay in it. Heres the deal though. If, and again I say IF he can turn around and play football I can’t wait to see what our team will do. He is an asset of talent on the field, but a distraction of focus and bad publicity off it.

Some times I feel that the only fans that see anything positive about our team this year are on this site. I worked a booth at the Kansas State Fair this weekend and all of the Bronco fans I ran into were haters and had nothing good to say at all.

  20. killerkod says:

How can you consider yourself a fan and be a hater? A fan should always give the team the benefit of the doubt until proven wrong. And even then you should stick with the team unless you’re a bandwagoner.

But the one thing I appreciate about this blog and the fans that post here is that we are, for the most part, OBJECTIVE. Praise is given when due, as well as critisism. It’s what makes us passionate Broncos fans. We all just really want to see our team do well. I’m proud to be part of this community and enjoy reading everyones opinions on our team.

This weekend’s match-up is really a must win. We have such a tough schedule coming up and need that extra win and momentum going into the Dallas game. That stretch of games is going to be a true test for this team and it will be some amazing football to watch. I know our boys will hang tough in there and hopefully with the right preparation and execution, come out with some W’s. I think we have a well rounded TEAM, and that’s what wins football games.

    GO BRONCOS!

  21. baylinorcrush says:

The haters can’t stand it here, they are so overpowered, they become irrelevant. After all, we are the official blog of the Denver Broncos, anything else would be unacceptable. Here is to living, eating, sleeping, breathing and talking Denver Broncos… I love it!

  22. broncofanlvnm says:

DD, Get well soon. It’s pretty wild they can’t figure out what happened to you. Was the bar you were at investigated cause it sounds like it’s possible someone may have slipped you something there. Anyway, I wish you a speedy recovery.

Now let’s go kick some Faider a$$!!!! Make the fans over there turn on their team. GO BRONCOS!!!!!! 3-0 after this week!!!!

  23. Torain ATV fan says:

I believe the win can be easy. Coach McD just needs to make sure we dont overlook them. The players need to be focused and not think of the Dallas game yet.

    Viva the Orange and Blue.

  24. Orange_Crusher says:

    Mornin baylinorcrush!

I echo your statement “the haters can’t stand it here”. I like knowing that there is somewhere to go that is great, like this blog.

I spend time on the DP blog but mostly just to be a FOO FIGHTER and battle the EVIL HATERS there.

I wish we could have avatars here! I have a great one on the DP and get to put up pictures of stuff like Elvis sacking opposing QB’s.

  25. baylinorcrush says:

A ot of guys seem to think ahead to the Dallas game, thinking that we’ll easily win Sunday. I’m obviously doing my part in that as I’m picking us to beat the Raiders 30-9. I just hope the team isn’t reading any of these blogs this week, because they cannot be complacent this week, IT IS the Raiders we’re playing, and if Al Davis could only win one game a year on any given season, he would pick this one.

Anyway, if I go by my yearly picks, I also have us beating Dallas next week to go 4-0. The problem starts after that with the N-E, at SD, at Balt. and Pitts. games where, in my yearly predictions, I have us lose those 4 to go 4-4. Don’t crucify me, that’s the way I saw it back in March, we win the 1st 4, lose the next 4. So worthless to say, for me the real test will start with the N-E game and if we win one of these 4 then my predictions of going 8-8 could be false and a winning record could become a reality. Either way, I still think that 8-8 might win the west this year just like last year, as none of our competition seems to be worthy of a winning record this year. Of course if we lose to Dallas, then we’d have to win one of the following 4 games just to retain a chance at finishing at 500, again by my early yearly perdictions.

I love doing that, I write them down right after the draft and I stick with it troughout the season and I usually find out that I’m much more correct that way than if I get carried away by the season and change my picks as the season develops.

  26. brian_schneider says:

Don’t overlook the Raiders & don’t worry about the Cowboys yet!

  27. baylinorcrush says:

OC in the morning, WOW! Welcome. I used to do the Post, but it was so negative I was mainly a RMN blogger, that’s where I 1st meant DDave, since they folded I read the articles but I don’t even bother with the blogs, it’s so pointless it bores me to death. But have at it, kick some tail over there for all of us, bash the haters…

  28. baylinorcrush says:

Brian, looks like telepathy in the works…ahahahah.

  29. Broncfalls says:

Here’s what I love most about this offense!

Orton is a very smart QB. He makes very little mistakes. Remember there’s no extra points in the NFL for style.

Also, although it’s great to pick apart a defense with 1 main WR as most teams do….How about our Broncos who spread that thing to on an average of 8 different deadly weapons.

It makes the defense decide immediately who and what they are going to cover. Fine, then we’ll take a smart QB in Orton and spread it around.

Guys/Gals……..Coach JMac saying that we will play different from week to week is the smartest thing this organization has done in coaching for a long time. AND….the team bought into it and are winning and playing very, very aggressive on defense….

    I love it!

    GO GET EM’ BOYS!

  30. baylinorcrush says:

It’s GENIUS, no one knows what we’ll be on any given Sunday. Talk about a pain in the you know what for the opposing teams!

  31. broncofan96 says:

I think in the raiders game we will win 27-3

  32. shawn723 says:

this game will not be a walk over game. the raiders defense is a good as they come. They were a game winning drive away from beating the chargers. Im not saying we will lose this game because that just doesnt happen, but if our players go into this game with the same easy win mentality as some of you guys, we could b looking at a 2-1 record. But if our D plays the way it has the past 2 games i could see Russel actually b worse than the 7-24 the had against the chiefs, and we know orton will protect the ball and limit the turnovers like hes done all year. LETS GO BRONCOS!!!

  33. theotheredge says:

Lets be realistic. The Raiders are going to play us close…more like 23-20 i think.

  34. broncs55 says:

    65-0

  35. whitebronco#1 says:

    Go DD! Get better soon!

I’m too for a closer, not easy game vs. Oakland. But still something like 17-13 Denver.

And I insist… there should be Thursday night football all season.

    Go Broncooos!

  36. whitebronco#1 says:

By the way… no noise about this, but the 3 “experts” in NFL Playbook picked unanimously the Broncos for a W. I think they did because it’s a close game and they’d like better to say “what were we thinking?, we knew this about the Broncos since the beginning” than picking Oakland and should eat their words again.

  37. RoyalBlue86 says:

    @BC:

Yeah, I hear what you’re saying about BMarsh. I don’t know that any of the off the field issues will change, but do you really think that jettisoning him at this point will really help the team? Personally, I’m emotionally detached from the guy. He can dress up nice and has a lot of talent, but he seems to make so many poor decisions off the field, and that’s more important than his talent or his style. I don’t see him being around much longer anyway, but I figure he should still get a short leash contract with character incentives, and then if he fails to come through one way or another this season, on or off the field, I say he’s gone, and we go to the draft to find another big WR who won’t get into trouble. I don’t know that he deserves another chance, but that’s not my call, and I think that this is his last season to prove he’s worth a roster spot.

  38. tnalen66 says:

I hope the players don’t over look the Raiders like last year.

  39. tnalen66 says:

Last year we were 2-0 and went to KC who was 0-2 and lost. Then later we had Oakland at home and we got blown out by them. Russle has the best game of his career. I think Oakland has a very good running game and they can play D. This is a DIVISION GAME GO BRONCOS!!!!!!!

  40. vabroncoguy says:

Wooow, I will say this and I know that a lot of you are going to get mad. But screw it. I went to Denver think ing that maybe I was a bit more pessimist than I was a realist. I thought that the people on here were the “voice” of Bronco nation. It is amazing to see that the DP is actually more accurate in how people feel about this team. The offense is far from good, the defense is astounding. KO is horrible. I mean, it was hard for me to find a fan that liked him. Smart, uhhh, no. Did you see some of the passes he made Sunday. We have two outstanding weapons in Marshall and Royal who are barely even touching the ball. Please don’t spit me any stats about Orton not throwing any picks, he has thrown them, they have not been caught. (which I know is technically NOT a pick) His “plays of more then 25 yards”, all done by the receiver not him. I think with the way the defense is carrying this team, if we had a QB that could actually make a play and not just be part of it, we would be an 11-5 or 12-4 LOCK. No I am not asking for Cutler he is gone, but I do think that Simms or Brandstater are better options. If you do not feel like Orton is going to take us to the championship or playoffs, why not let the rookie get some time in there. I don’t know, it is going to be a tough week though hopefully the D does it’s thing. be angry if you must, bring on the I am not a true fan comments, maybe the team will prove me wrong. But I am not sold on McD just yet.

  41. TheRoyalBeast says:

“Here is to living, eating, sleeping, breathing and talking Denver Broncos… I love it!” Nothing better baylin, nothing better at all lol

As far as predictions for this weekends game, i would hate to sound cocky but if KCs D could keep em to like 10 I think we can keep em to 7 or less. I would like us to continue our streak of keeping opposing offenses to 7points or less for as long as we can. On that note I say we win, 6-20….gotta stay stingy on defense lol

PS: Just gonna give props to Andra Davis on 10 tackles. Man was all over the field. I specially give him props cuz I wasnt quite sure about him. Maybe playing his old team brought out the beast in him lol

THE SEASON IS OURS FOR THE TAKING
    GO BRONCOS!!!

  42. TheRoyalBeast says:

    Point taken VAbroncoguy,

I’ve often said similar about Orton but he is here to stay. Offense needs consistency and if he aint gone by now, he is here to stay until he seriously screws up. Dont fight wat you cant control, I agree that the team is carrying him as well. If he was on the team last year where cutler had no D and no runners he would be in trouble. But he is not, and he may not be winning games for us but he sure isnt losing em. Like ive always said, would like to know he can lead us to a victory when needed.

He is just a patch job for this year I believe. and if we can make a run for the playoffs with him, not my decision but im fine with it. Not sold on McD either (dont like him for some reason) but cant argue with results either and yes I know this isnt the first year we have started off strong. Your concerns are realistic but when all that comes out of your mouth is only the negative and not the positive, thats when you become not a true fan. Im no fan of Orton or McD, but I am a fan of the Denver Broncos which they do happen to be a part off.

  43. Torain ATV fan says:

Yeah i hope Orton can win us a game when needed. THE WAY CUTLER SHOWED US HE CAN WIN ONE WHEN NEEDED THE LAST 3 F ING GAMES of last year.

  44. Torain ATV fan says:

i hate when fans ays pure negative shoot on a post, then add a clause at the end because they are not men enough to say what they feel. No one in particular (just ranting). HAhahahahaah. see what i mean, i put a clause too not upset anybody. LMAO, LMAO. yeah orton sucks, hasnt proven anything to me, i hate Mcd, ohhh but I love the broncos. what a damn joke.

  45. baylinorcrush says:

I had a feeling I knew who was booing Orton at the game Sunday… Anyway, RoyalBlue, jettisoning him, to lighten the ship, loved the choice of word. Yes, I would if we can get something decent in return. I’m not sure a 1st and a 3rd would still be realistic considering the slide in value BM has gone through, but a 2nd and a 3rd or a 4th would be good enough for me, or a good player and a third, something in that ball park I believe would benefit us. Call me crazy but the reason I think we would be immediately better off without him is for the rest of the team and their psyche, either way you look at it, he has become a disappointment to the other players, some have already attested to it publicly, so how can he possibly be a positive anymore. He had plenty of chances and he blew them all. He has become some sort of a dead weight kind of thing which is why I thought jettisoning him covered it so well. In my view, he is now trying to do everything right strictly for monetary reason (securing a future contract), he is not doing it in the goal of helping the team win and that’s a big problem. In order to have anyone truly help us you have to have heart and be totally into the team’s cause, he does neither. Also remember that we do not only have Stockley, Gaffney, Royal and Scheffler as great receiving threats, we also have McKinley and Lloyd who everyone seems to have forgotten. I hate to post this after TRB, who is tired of hearing me out on this, can’t blame him, but I had to answer Royal Blue. Peace, bro. LOL.

  46. vraptor567 says:

don’t think this fader game is going to be a pushover, it will be our toughest match so far, but if we can keep the offense strong we will be going 3-0. I hear what many of you are saying about KO, not my first choice either but his stats are good, he is improving and I keep hoping he will make us proud, most important of all: he is our QB so gotta stand by him. Looking to the upcoming games: Dallas->no problem, NE-> brady not getting the protection he used to get so our D will clobber him, SD-> if we contain Sproles the game is ours, Baltimore->if our offense steps up we can take them, Pittsburgh->our D can run down rothlesbuger and we can win this one also, Wash-> TO still not meshing so good chance there also, Jets-> ??, KC-> games at arrowhead are always tough so we’ll see, Indi-> if we pressure manning we can take them, Okland at home-> we own them, Philly->who is the QB???, KC-> home we own this game.
not suggesting we will win all these games just we have a better shot than most people think if we keep improving on offense and keep the D healthy. Should be a great season
    always the 12th man
    GO BRONCOS

  47. Torain ATV fan says:

If Orton is so bad, then the coaches are doing their job if we are 2-0. Either u cant trust Orton or the coach. But too not trust both makes you be wrong. If i remember well the coach picked up those D players that are doing so good now. Either way I will be happy as long as we win, if we start to loose then complain, for now you should enjoy it. Since you say we wont in a couple of weeks after we play harder teams. So in your eyes, enjoy while you can. Your division leaders and still crying, WOW. It must be hard on your partners. You loose your mad, you win your mad. I guess u might be upset since McDaniels is proving many people wrong.

  48. Torain ATV fan says:

Vraptor, last comment was not towards you.

  49. TheRoyalBeast says:

NP baylin, I think everyone on these blogs know where we both stand on that situation lol….thats why I try to avoid talking about it if possible lol, I hate to sound like a broken record. But come to think about it, you’re right, I dont see Lloyd or Mckinley out there either or should I say they havent gotten many touches.

  50. D~J~C~#24is#1 says:

Wow such a flip flop of opinions… thats awesome if we were all the same it would be a very boring world. LOL.
One thing we haven’t had since our last good season is Defense the last time our team has had this kind of aggression and playing like its your last game (on D that is) was like 2005. I’m excited!!!! Our TEAM is better this year than it has been for a while. Who CARES if KO is just riding the team as long as he’s not loosing the games for us I don’t care but I definitely wouldn’t say he’s been nearly as good as his stats say.
Ya like everyone always says this game is against one of our division rivals and those games are never easy.
TheRoyalBeast I totally agree, if KC’s D could hold the Raiders to 10 points our D can hold’em to 7 or less.
    Denver Wins 24-6

    GO BRONCOS 3-0 BABY YEA!!!!!!!!
