‘No Excuses’ For Second-Year Safety

August 12th, 2012 - 2:17pm by Sam Davis

Safety Rahim Moore isn’t slow to admit that at times, he struggled last year.

“I’ve had some good and bad (experiences), majority bad,” Moore laughed.

He’s over it. The only reason Moore looks back on his 2011 season is to learn from it.

“You just get better,” Moore said. “You watch (the film), but at the same time you have to move on. It’s not like you harp or get mad about it. You just get better. Because at the same time, there were some advantages that I didn’t have last year compared to previous rookies. Now, it’s no excuses. I’m just trying to make plays and win games. That’s it.”

As a rookie, Moore started the first five regular season games last year for the Broncos, but then just two of the final 11 games. Fellow rookie Quinton Carter replaced him at the starting safety position. But with the first official depth chart almost a week old, the former UCLA Bruin is back at No. 1 and playing with the first unit.

“Now, I’m inspired,” Moore said. “I’m more inspired and more motivated than I’ve ever been. Last year, I was training just to get ready for the NFL. This year, I’m training for an NFL season. It’s a difference.”

Although Carter is out with an injury, Moore said he expects him to return “fully strong, fully healthy, and ready to roll.” With Carter’s return will be some competition for playing time at safety. But for Moore, competition is nothing new, and certainly nothing negative.

“(The competition) isn’t only with me and him, but across the country,” Moore said. “I’m competing with guys out here on this team, the other 32 teams, even guys in high school and college. This is a competitive world. It’s America. Everybody’s competing at something. It helps with me and (Quinton) but at the same time, you want to compete with yourself.”

Moore said earlier in camp that he was receiving some advice from former Broncos safeties Brian Dawkins and John Lynch.

But with Dawkins’ retirement this offseason, he’s taken ninth-year safety Mike Adams as a mentor in the secondary.

“(He has taught me) so much,” Moore said. “I learn stuff from him every day, every meeting. I ask him more questions than anybody I’ve ever asked.
He’s been a blessing in my life. I really thank God for him.”

Shared knowledge has been a great tool for Moore’s progression this offseason. Though he’ll continue to absorb as much as he can from Broncos’ veterans and coaches, the second-year safety believes he is fully equipped to be the Broncos’ starting safety in 2012.

“A lot of guys help me out, and it’s been a long process,” Moore said. “But I’m ready.”

Looking good. The Air Force Acadamy is 10 minutes from where I live. I can see the stadium every morning from I-25 when heading up to work.

  2. strandoftds82 says:

I saw it finally. Hillman is going to be a force of his own. LOL

  3. tlcat06 says:

You can’t say “that was a pretty throw” when it comes to Os because his throwing motion is so bizarre. It’s definitely not pretty, might be a fantastic throw, but it won’t be pretty. LOL

Between mcgahee ball hillman omon n johnson we have a super team of backs each capable of hittin the homerun in their own way and will only benifit from having manning

  5. tlcat06 says:

Florida, I agree. I was not worried about our depth at running back before the game and I’m more confident now. Remember TD was at the bottom of the depth chart, perhaps Omon is another TD waiting to happen.

  6. strandoftds82 says:

    I`m a JJ fan.

  7. tlcat06 says:

Strand, I like JJ and Ball better than Knowshon so if either of them make it over him I’d be good with it.

  8. strandoftds82 says:

McGahee will be a monster RB again for the Broncos.

  9. strandoftds82 says:

I don`t think Moreno will make the team.

  10. tlcat06 says:

You read the article I posted on the other blog where some idiot said we should cut ties with McGahee???

  11. tlcat06 says:

And this one? About double standards? http://www.milehighsports.com/?p=11600

  12. tlcat06 says:

There is no double standard here. Tebow looked ridiculously scared in his pocket. He wouldn’t stay there long enough to get any kind of good read and then would take off running it at the first sign of pressure. I disagree that they played any bit similar. Stats say so and yes a few passes were wobbly, but I don’t think Tebow showed near the poise Peyton did, even if Peyton wasn’t as strong as we’ve seen hi in the past. He needs to heal still and Tebow is not and never was hurt like him some has no excuses. It was a stepping stone for Peyton and he did a nice job. Took a good chunk of time off the clock too. Plus, HIS receivers have has four different offenses to learn in three seasons… Timing matters.

    Off my soap box.

  13. strandoftds82 says:

Manning is only going to get better as the season moves on. The team is going to jell too.

  14. tlcat06 says:

I think he needed to play in a game to prove to HIMSELF that he could still do it. Saturday is going to be different than last Thursday!

    And spicy. HaHa!

  18. strandoftds82 says:

So have you ordered that book yet? My Time In Heaven!

  19. tlcat06 says:

I haven’t had time to read anything. Surprisingly, once school starts I’ll have some more time.

  20. tlcat06 says:

I spose I could read that instead of do this!

  21. strandoftds82 says:

You gotta get it first. Unless you get it on kindle of course.

  22. tlcat06 says:

True! I might be able to borrow it for free on my kindle. Hey strand, headed to dinner with the tam. Chat with you soon! Tap Your Cleats Three Times! There’s nothing like Peyton Manning at MILE HIGH!

  23. strandoftds82 says:

I hope Porters injury is small an comes back soon. Man, do we need him out on the field.

  24. strandoftds82 says:

    Enjoy, laters.

  25. alaskanbronco06 says:

I am glad we didnt get Brockers Poe Worthy or Reyes all three looked sad out there….

Man Vick Ballard looked really good out there today going against the Rams 1st string.

  26. alaskanbronco06 says:

Chad Johnson has been released by the Miami DOlphins lol

  27. oldsouthstander says:

    1972, tcat: Got your BBBPs.

Boy, blog is slow. Surprised nobody jumped all over me for saying the Broncos would lose at SD.
Turlte, SEC, Cat, anybody out there? LOL!!!

  28. strandoftds82 says:

    Johnson`s a dummy.

  29. sndvl says:

Pshaw! I can’t believe you call the SD game a loss OSS. What nerve… That will be the game where the NFL will take notice that the Broncos are a legitimate AFC threat & contender.

Other than that & a flip flop of AtL win & Hou loss & we are sitting at 11-5

    Get to work 26…

    Broncos Country Strong 2012!

  30. tlcat06 says:

OSS we will lose one to SD ;-) I know that already, they have Peyton’s #

Strand, I really don’t think Chad did anything… His wife is a crazy person, did some research. Wouldn’t be shocked if what HE said is the truth.

  31. eternalorangeandblue says:

I agree that Manning will get better as the season goes along. That being said, I think our backfield will be heavily featured in the early going. Dont be surprised if we see some erratic play from Peyton every now and then. Like strand mentioned, he will take some time to fully “recover”, and it will happen during the course of the whole season. If we get into the playoffs, by that time he’ll be in perfect condition to help the team make the run. I think thats where hes gonna help us most. In the playoffs. We have SOOO many young guys who just dont know what that type of season is like and what it takes to push for the championship once you’re in the race. . I believe thats why we brought Peyton here. He’s been there and done it so many times and if theres anyone I’d want to take the reigns come tournament time, its PM.

  32. tlcat06 says:

Eternal, I agree with you, it I still think that erratic play from Peyton is better than erratic play from Tebow…

I think his presence in the post season,a lthough he hasn’t always won, is very important for these guys. Some of them have experience from last year and that will help, but I think we are a stronger team this year than we were last.

  33. skillz_inc says:

http://www.epubbud.com is where my wife reads all here books for free on her tablet!

I agree with the fact we don’t need Moreno man Oman was impressive !

Ab u can add Isiah Pead to that list did anyone watch the game today could be just jitters and all but he was a fumbling machine… and i loved him i am no pro.

I believe we will lose on vs san diego and one vs the chiefs for a 4-2 division record

  34. skillz_inc says:

    will lose one*

  35. tlcat06 says:

Skillz, I too have us sweeping the Raiders with a 4-2 division record. ;-)

  36. qblb says:

FLASH – Bronco’s school Bears defense – FLASH

  37. alaskanbronco06 says:

Skillz I didnt have Pead on my watch list. Lol A lot are just of people I wanted in Denver or players talked about with Denver. I missed a lot though.

  38. MarshMelo15 says:

Strand… I saw you mentioned the book “My Time In Heaven”… I just gotta say that is one of the best books I have ever read. It was sooo good!

As far as our RB depth, I too really liked what I saw out of Omon. I really hope he makes the team. I’d like to see our RB depth look like this.
    1. McGehee
    2. Hillman
    3. Omon
    4. Moreno/Johnson

I’m not very big on Lance Ball. I wouldn’t mind it at all if he didn’t make the 53.

  39. alaskanbronco06 says:

    Melo you mean Fumbles? Lol

I have said it before and will again Omon was great and I want to see if its actually his talent or just the fact he was playing the bottom of the depth chart so let him see carries with the 1st and 2nd string!!!!

  40. tlcat06 says:

    My predictions:

    Pittsburgh- W
    Falcons- L
    Texans- W
    Raiders- W
Patriots- W (I am overly optimistic)
    Chargers- L
    Saints- W
    Bengals- W
Panthers- L (got to lose to at least be random opponent)
    Chargers- W
    Chiefs- L
    Bucs- W
    Raiders- W
Ravens- L (I know we have the Raven Killer, but we never win in Baltimore)
    Browns- W
Chiefs- W (we won’t have to win this game, but we will)

  41. tlcat06 says:

    Be = one

  42. tlcat06 says:

Strand!! I read that book for a bible study! I just didn’t remember what it was called!!!! amazing!!!!

  43. MarshMelo15 says:

Yeah AB, Fumbles is more accurate for sure.

I would think that Omon would at least get some 2nd string carries VS the seahawks this next week. I think with the way he played against the Bears, he has earned the right to show what he has. Let’s just hope the coaching staff thinks so too.

  44. alaskanbronco06 says:

Melo thats just what im saying. I want to see if it was because hes really that talented or jsut because the players he was playing vs.

  45. tlcat06 says:

AB, from what I read about practice yesterday he was running with the second stringers (Omon) so I think you’re going to get your wish!

  46. strandoftds82 says:

MarshMelo15, thats so incredible. Getting the word out that is speaking of things to come. I haven`t seen nothing yet. HaHa!!!!!

  47. strandoftds82 says:

Cat, so Chads wife is a loon huh? Man, oh man.

  48. strandoftds82 says:

Cat, I`m soooo glad!!!!!! We have something to look forward to.

  49. strandoftds82 says:

We haven`t seen nothing yet, I meant.

  50. strandoftds82 says:
