Nine in the Afternoon

August 2nd, 2008 - 3:10pm by Gray Caldwell

A little Panic! at the Disco reference…

Anyway, as you can tell, there’s no practice this afternoon. Head Coach Mike Shanahan cancelled it, letting the team have a little extra time off — there’s no practice at all tomorrow.

Shanahan is going to former Bronco Gary Zimmerman’s Pro Football Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony in Canton, Ohio this afternoon. He said he’ll be there with a handful of other coaches that were around when Zimmerman played in Denver.

Enjoy your weekend, maybe go see Step Brothers. We DenverBroncos.com bloggers went a few days ago, and if you like Will Ferrell even a little bit, you’ll love it. It had us rolling. HIGHLY recommended.

On that note, we’ll see you again for practices on Monday.

Hey guys, after watching the HOF ceremony I was surprised that no one mentioned what I thought was the greatest Gary Zimmerman story ever.

The year before the Broncos won superbowl 32, the broncos lost a shocker in the playoffs, after cruising through the season and entering the playoffs as a superbowl contender, they were beaten, at home, by the Jacksonville Jaguars in what most Bronco fans and even John Elway say was the worst moment in Broncos history.

Gary Zimmerman was not sure he would return the next season. Most people thought that there was a good chance he would retire. Then, Bronco fans found out that he was in Sturgis, South Dakota, for the famous Sturgis motorcycle rally. Elway was sent or volunteered, to go to Sturgis and talk Zim out of retiring. It worked, Zim returned, and Denver won their first Lombardi trophy the next year.

Who would have thought that such an important moment in Broncos history would happen in Sturgis, South Dakota, in the offseason, with no football around, and amidst thousands of motorcycles?
