NFL Owners Approve Rule Changes

March 28th, 2012 - 10:26am by Stuart Zaas

Yesterday we wrote about the proposed rule changes for the 2012 NFL season, and today the owners voted to approve several of the competition committee’s proposals. In order to pass, the proposals required votes from at least 24 of the league’s 32 owners.

The following five rule changes will be enacted for the 2012 season:

  • All games that go into overtime will use what had been the postseason overtime rules. This means that both teams will get at least one possession – unless the first team to possess the ball scores a touchdown on its initial drive.
  • Instant replay reviews of all turnovers will now be automatic – just as all scoring plays are now automatically reviewed.
  • Penalties for having two many men lined up on the field prior to a snap will now be enforced as dead ball penalties, rather than allowing the play to proceed. The Giants took advantage of the previous rule by using 12 defenders during the Patriots’ last-minute drive in Super Bowl XLVI.
  • Crack-back blocks on defensive players that are lined up more than two yards outside the offensive tackle at the snap are now illegal. This is designed to help improve player safety.
  • Illegally kicking a loose football is now a loss-of-down penalty.

Four proposals were tabled until the league’s next meeting session in May:

  • A roster exemption for one player who has suffered a concussion. This is designed to give teams more short-term roster options to replace injured players without placing them on injured reserve.
  • A shorter injured-reserve option, which would allow clubs to bring one player back from the injured reserve list after at least eight weeks. This would allow a player who is injured early in the year to recover and return to the roster later in the season.
  • Moving the trade deadline back two weeks. Currently the trade deadline is six weeks into the season.
  • Expanding training camp roster limits to 90 players. The current roster size for training camp is 80.

What are your thoughts on these changes?

New Blogs fast and frequent today.

The whole instant replay thing in my opinion is nice because it will help get the call correct. However, it seems as though the past few years since replay was installed, the referees have gotten lacks on some of the calls. It is almost as if they’re using the instant replay as a crutch and they aren’t making the right call to begin with. Eventually the entire game is going to be one gigantic replay system, pretty soon penalties are going to be revieable.
If anything I think that if a team’s instant replay equipment isn’t working they should be fined. I know several times last year team’s replay systems “weren’t working” c’mon, you make something that critical to the game and it’s not working. I work in the video display business and for one of our displays to be “not working” is unacceptable.

What exactly would be “legally” kicking a loose ball????

Wow no Tebow news and the blog dies…

Broncoway what you’ve just said … is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

I don’t quite understand the 12 man on the field change.

    Giants 39-20 Broncs

  16. brian_schneider says:

buck484: It will be treated the same as a false start, so the play will not be allowed to continue and run time off the clock like the Giants did in the SB.

  17. buck484 says:

    I get it now, thanks

  20. vttk25 says:

Why dont we just put the flags in their pants!!

  21. brian_schneider says:

In the interest of player safety as they might break a nail trying to grap at the flags so the league implemented the “no flag rule.”

  22. DenverOrange says:

Nothing to do with the Broncos but it’s a slow day. I’m throwing a final four party at my house on Saturday we are making Cajun food since its in New Orleans anyone got any good recipes?

  23. Bronco_Turtle says:

How long did it take you to copy that off of Billy Madison LAX?

  24. brian_schneider says:

DenverOrange: More of a suggestion than a recipe, but a Cajun Shrimp/Crawfish boil is always most delicious.

  25. Broncos LAX says:

    all of 10 seconds maybe

  26. Bronco_Turtle says:

The only thing missing was ‘Denver Bronco Football Rules….’

  27. Bronco_Turtle says:

Hey Brian… that’s kind of funny… the NFL goes to the NFFL (National Flag Football League) and as if that wasn’t far enough it then goes to the NNFFL (National No Flag Football League) where if the D is withing a step of the O it’s a ‘tackle’ ….

the only thing left is to simply play Ultimate Frisbee style… where you are forced to stand in place when you catch the ball and then toss it to a teammate… BORING

  28. DenverOrange says:

Brian that boil looks like a lot of work dude JK I think I’ll give it a try

  29. brian_schneider says:

Some other suggestions that I’ve made are Cajun Shrim Alfredo, that one I got off of the Food Network website or a Cajun burger as well. Guess it depends on if you’re looking for appetizers or entrees.

  30. DenverOrange says:

a Cajun Burger? Holly cow I bet thats good

  31. chewy6977 says:

Other than the instant replay rules, the new rules suck! The proposed rules that were tabled are better options than the ones that were actually voted on!

  32. Broncos LAX says:

    Dead today where is AB?!?!

  33. DenverOrange says:

My guess he’s at the library reading up on some baby books

  34. Bronco_Turtle says:

    Greatness you around man?

  35. alaskanbronco06 says:

    Was in a meeting.

Has there been any more news on us wanting Okoye?

  36. Broncos LAX says:

No news ab just a sad slow day so far! I got some new shoes idk if that is news worthy?

  37. Bronco_Turtle says:

    http://www.nfl.com/draft/2012/mock-drafts?module=HP11_cp

AB… do you have this link already?

  38. DenverCB says:

Whats up AB and LAX, and for the shoes what kind? maybe it is news worthy haha

  39. alaskanbronco06 says:

Yea i have the link BT but thanks anyways.

Lax if they are autographed by a Bronco id say thats news worthy. lol

Trying to get all caught up on Bronco news. Got more good news today. Found out my dads wanting to open another bar and Id take over the one he has now and he will run the other till the new one gets up and going. Hes going to put a apartment above the new one where i would move into when its all up and going smoothly. This has been a good week for me id say.

  40. Bronco_Turtle says:

    Congrats AB…

  41. alaskanbronco06 says:

    Thanks BT.

Man i really hope we get Okoye. That would be really great!!

  42. DenverCB says:

It should be a good time AB, congrats hope all goes well.

I really hope Okoye can be signed. He would come at a steep price, maybe a little much for our budget, but cutting Goody would be a start!

  43. alaskanbronco06 says:

I dont think Okoye will be more than 2 mil. Hes young but hasnt performed very well. He only got 1.3 mil last year with the Bears. I would expect something no higher than that.

  44. imready says:

The draft is coming. Question is, how much the will the aquisition of P. Manning effect what players we draft ? You know that Fox is going to want more tools on defense. Fox’s inteview on Broncos TV suggested big changes on offense, but he loves to pound the rock. Elways know he won superbowls in the twilight of his career because he had a strong running game. Indy didn’t win as many superbowls because the lacked defense and lacked a strong running game after M. Faulk retired. They have given us few hits about the draft except the DT position and possible a QB for the future. They want to win now. I tied for second last year in the draft contest, more luck than knowledge but right now I really don’t know wath direction we will turn. Wish I was a fly on the wall.

It will be interesting to see how the overtime rule plays out being implimented in the regular season. Brian_schneider certainly has a point with his take on it. The only thing that bugs me with the original rule is when you recieve the ball first, everyone is already gassed from playing 4 quarters of football so having the first possesion gives the recieving team a distinct advantage. It has sucked at times watching your team battle back into a game only to be defeated by a 45-50 yard fieldgoal on the first possession. I wouldn’t mind if they just played a full quarter and at the end of it whatever team was leading won or if they tied they each got a half win. Guess that is not as dramatic but if both teams played that hard they at least got something for their efforts. It has to be dieheartening to work you butt off and come away with nothing.

  45. Broncos LAX says:

Just a pair of Jordans for Basketball haha… I did once buy my Brother a autographe and frame Michael Jordan Jersey which was lie a 1000$ And I now own a autographed framed picture of the DIVE!!!

  46. Broncos LAX says:

    CB how goes it?

AB thats fantastic new apartment hunting sucks!!!

    I think Okoye gets 2 years, 6.5mil

  47. alaskanbronco06 says:

imready I agree with you on the overtime. I hated seeing it won after 2/3 passes then a FG. Like you said everyone was gassed so it was a little easier for the team with first possession to win. I have thought for many years that they should just play OT like normal a full 15 then after just have it be a tie. That way they would still have to work just as hard. Brian did have some really good views also.

I also wish i was a fly on the wall. Guess i would like to know some of the players they are really interested in.

  48. DenverCB says:

Its going as good as it gets, im sittin at work trying to find work to do. May as well hop on the blog. I havent been here for a while probably missed out on some fun. ex. Peyton/tebow bashing haha

  49. alaskanbronco06 says:

Lax I think if he gets a contract like that more money would be in bonuses. Only 2-3 mil guaranteed for 2 years. 1-1.5 mil a year.

  50. Broncos LAX says:

I wish I had that job to sit at work and have nothing to do… Haha I get to be a cook… And you did AB and BFE got into last night and now are good friends haha… which btw AB I got into with BFE when I was new on here also that’s when he loved Tebow… but we reconciled over some beer one night haha
