NFL Games to Watch

October 16th, 2011 - 10:59am by Kenny Legan

Even though the Broncos have a bye this week, that doesn’t mean the NFL is taking a break too. There are plenty of meaningful and exciting matchups to watch this Sunday and Monday. So take this non-Broncos weekend as an opportunity to take in a couple important games that could affect the Broncos in the weeks to come.

Sunday, 2:05 p.m. MDT, CBS: Cleveland at Oakland

The Chargers and Chiefs also have a bye this week, making the Raiders the only AFC West team to have a game Sunday. The Raiders are 3-2 and only one game back of San Diego for the division lead. Meanwhile, the Browns are 2-2 and hoping to get out of the cellar of the AFC North. This is a key game for the Raiders at home as it will set the early tone in terms of if they will compete for a division title, or fight for a wild-card spot.

Monday, 6:30 p.m. MDT, ESPN: New York Jets at Miami

Not only is this a Monday night game, but it also features the Broncos’ next opponent, the Dolphins. The Jets are coming off a tough loss to New England, and at 2-3, will be trying to make up ground on the 4-1 division-leading Patriots and Bills. Meanwhile, the Dolphins will play their first game with Matt Moore at quarterback, after starter Chad Henne went down last week with a season-ending injury. At 0-4, the Dolphins are looking for their first win, and will have a shortened week next week before the Broncos come to town.

The team itself said they were going to Tebow to see were they will be at at QB going in to next season. To me that sounds like they dont have much confidence

  2. BeastFromEast92 says:

I know he will get there,I know you can’t compare college to the NFL,but I’ve seen Tebow throw hundreds of perfect down the field passes,I know he can throw the ball with accuracy!

  3. O&BinCostaRica says:

I guess the Dolphins execs are smarter than some?

“Orton is a nice quarterback,” the source said. “But he’s not a franchise quarterback, and we weren’t going to pay him like one when he isn’t one.”

  4. Broncos Born & Raised says:

If Tebow would have used his leadership to organize workouts he would have added fuel to the QB controversy. He was being a team player (leader) by taking a back seat while he had to. No he is not a rookie. No he is not a rookie. No he is not John Elway. Steve Young wasn’t Joe Montana. The fact of the matter is Elway started out a “loser” if you look at those first 10 games. Tim is 1-2 and there deserves quite a bit more time before it is decided if can or can’t cut it in the NFL. That was the only point I was making with that. And yes there were people just like you who DID question that Elway could play in the league. Irv and Joe made their entire radio careers on bashing Elway, and they were the most popular local sports personalities for years. And they were far from alone. They were just the only ones who continued to do it after it was clear in everyone else’s mind that he was a living legend. I wonder how many people would still count Tebow out if we win 7 more games out of the remaining 11. Probably most of them. That’s the kind of double standard we have going on and I just find it a little baffling. And I’m not necessarily predicting we will win 7 more games so you can spare me on how “hilarious” that is.

  5. CarnageBronc says:

and to SEwatherman I like how you continuously say I am pro-Orton. I believe I have said in at least idk…10 blogs, that i am not an Orton fan. In fact, when Orton was brought in for Cutler, I said BAD MOVE. When we were 6-0 with Orton, I said uggggh. When Orton was the man last year, passing the world crazy, I still wasn’t “pro-Orton”. I am however…PROBRONCOS and I believe this Tebow fiasco is bad for the team in general. Fans demanding who plays…never let the inmates run the asylum…if the team wins 3 games this season and ends 4-12. We “see what we have” are you all going to be happy with that. Just letting Tebow go after “11 games”. No, people are going to say “he wasn’t given a fair shot” We are in a sticky situation….I have heard all the arguments supporting Tebow, but there is a group of people who do not feel like waving the white flag and sacrificing the season for the sake of “seeing what we got” is the best answer.

  6. BeastFromEast92 says:

badluck, look at Orton’s terrible #s this year,Hell you got a backup QB sitting on the bench that is capable of bringing a spark off the bench, plus you have 3 draft picks invested in the kid, perfect time to bring him in,don’t you think?

  7. Broncos Born & Raised says:

BFE he has definitely threaded some needles in college. He’s thrown some great deep balls in the NFL already. And while I haven’t seen him hit a ton of guys in stride yet, he’s placed a lot of balls where only his receivers had a chance at it. Dan Reeves said he’s already seen him make the throws in the league.

  8. Greatness007 says:

Eron Riley is Rod smith’s pick to be activated from practice squad. Those words are from his mouth.

As for all this Tebow will he or won’t he. People need to stop listening to the so called experts. Make your own opinon with watching him play. Tebow did organize off-season work-outs.

On trading Brandon who was not in support of Tebow by the way. With the change at QB. The Broncos need WR with yards after catch. Not just catch and go down with out being touch. On this site right now on the audio version on John Fox’s presser. It’s really Decker speaking. Royal is not getting traded he is in the mix. Decker said the the WR coach said it’s the guys in this room. So make the most of it. Decker said the were running mostly over the middle routes at practice. Which Brandon doesn’t like to do. Thats why he goes down fast after the catch.

The x/z wrs are Demaryius and Eric(Decker). Royal is the slot wr.

  9. Broncos Born & Raised says:

And there are a group of people who don’t feel like starting him is waiving the white flag. John Fox being one of them.

  10. BeastFromEast92 says:

The only way to shut the naysayers up is for him to prove them wrong, like he has his entire life, then ByGod they will still bash him, they always will even if he wins a SB!!!

  11. brian_schneider says:

I don’t feel that starting Tebow is waving the white flag. Orton seemed to be content losing games, getting his paycheck and just acting like another day on the job. Tebow could’ve just gone into the SD game and said ok, make a good impression and don’t mess up and lose even worse than we are but he didn’t and he rallied us, I don’t think the orginization or fans thing of stating Tebow as waving the white flag, if anything we’re now calling for a charge!

  12. CarnageBronc says:

to badluck…I see your point…to the Tebow fan it is “crazy” and “unfanlike” to not show an unwavering support of Tebow. Not the team, just Tebow. So your opinion will not be received openly. And to the person that asked what if Tebow started all season like Dalton and Newton what would have happened…who knows…BUT I know my point was, people say Tebow is hindered by not being able to have a “offseason”, but those guys did not either AND they were without the benefit of being in the system last year. I said that to say, Tebow, looks out of sorts in an offense he has been in for two years. Therefore there is a sample group of players that have not had the benefit of playing that have stepped in and at least LOOKED the part. Even Gabbert looks like a QB back there. Again, there are things that he needs to improve on and to me he doesn’t look very good. Again to me he doesn’t

  13. Broncos Born & Raised says:

True, Greatness. Tim did work out with pro receivers throughout the offseason. And actually questioning how hard he has worked to improve is something Merill Hoge wouldn’t even do!

  14. BeastFromEast92 says:

A healthy Thomas and Decker on the outside and a healthy Royal in the slot sounds like a great WR core to me,with Willis and Riley in there too!

  15. strandoftds says:

Is Royal in the last year of his contract?

  16. strandoftds says:

Carnage, your crazy dude. You haven`t got a clue!!

  17. BeastFromEast92 says:

    yeah.
but hopefully he decides to resign and stay a Bronco.

  18. strandoftds says:

We only have two P/R`s, Royal and Cosby.

  19. strandoftds says:

Your as bias as they come. You must enjoy losing.

  20. BeastFromEast92 says:

Carnage Tebow is trying to change his motion and trying to become a pocket passer too,it will be a Helluva lot harder for him in the NFL than it is for Newton,Dalton, and even Gabbert, but He will make it,you will see!

  21. baylinorcrush says:

    Be nice, new blog.

  22. BeastFromEast92 says:

Vaughn should be back there returning kicks,I know he plays a lot at Corner now,but the dude is freakishly fast!

  23. Greatness007 says:

Royal is in the last yr of his deal. The broncos want him back though I bout the break the bank. Nor should they for him.

People are forgetting about the most importnat person coming back to practice. It isn’t Demaryius( even though im very, very, very glad he’s back.) It’s the other Thomas. I’m looking for big receptions from the TEs on sunday. They gonna be Tebow’s safety net. Even though I just said that. f Tim sees 8 men in the box the first play. He should be aloud to audible out of what ever play is being called at the time. Then call a 9 route for Demaryius Thomas. Then drop back and let it fly!!!

  24. Broncos Born & Raised says:

Personally I think Tim did look the part. He made some mistakes and started off slow. Just like the seven year veteran who has been in the system for TWO years did in the first half. Then he went out and made plays with his legs AND his arm. And on those first drives there were opportunities he had to take off running and he either stayed in the pocket and tried to complete a pass or he rolled out a bit and threw. And regardless of how much Dalton and Gabbert have “looked” QB’s they have made plenty of inaccurate throws and bad decisions. I guess they are harder to notice because at least they are making a good because they are standing in the pocket or whatever. lol.

  25. Broncos Born & Raised says:

*I guess they are harder to notice because they are standing in the pocket or whatever*

  26. strandoftds says:

Oh ya, I forgot about Vaughn.

  27. Greatness007 says:

to BBR( Broncos Born & Raised) It’s not that. It’s the stats that people are looking at and the highlights. Not the actual game as a whole. Like The kid Beck for Washington. They already calling for Grossman’s head and they leading the div. lol If Tebow was on the Redskin’s he would be starting. The reason Tebow wasn’t starting wasn’t cuz Kyle gives us the best chance to win. Kyle was starting cuz he gives us the best chance to draft Andrew Luck.

HE was 3-10 with all those stats his supports talk about. Those are don’t matter yards. Most was when the game was already lost.

  28. badluck727 says:

Denver is just now showing a running game after 3 to 4 years of not having one . Until last week the last running back to go over 100 yards in a game was Tatum Bell. Tebow is a run first, pass second Qb. Always has been. NFL defense’s historically have eatten that up. There is a reason Vick has started to throw more and more. I am afraid this will shut down what little running game they have now. Stack the box with 8 guys and the running is over. Our TE’s are young and seem to have the drops at times and that will not help Tebow. This is all im saying.

  29. sndvl says:

I’d like to take this opportunity to thank Brandon Lloyd for the contributions he made to our Denver Broncos football organization.
Your highlight reel/circus/freak of nature catches added some excitement in the midst of chaos. (And helped some of us with the sting of another Brandon’s departure)
Best of Luck to you in StL. May you have 31 highlight reel/circus/freak of nature grabs!

    GO BRONCOS!

  30. Greatness007 says:

Tebow is not run first QB. When Orton was starting and Tim came on the field. Those were called run plays most of the time. Orton out wide lets me know that. That means if orton was out wide and Tebow went back to pass. He would only have half the field to work with. Tebow can stand in the pocket and pass.

If Tebow was a run first QB. He would have ran for 80 against the Chargers. He had so many lanes when he dropped back to pass.

  31. badluck727 says:

Not a run first Qb Huh. He had just about 700 attempts for almost 3000 yards and 57 td’s in college. not a running QB. Greatness007 those stats are better than Vicks college stats and we all agree that Vick is a running QB. If there was more time on the clock at the end of the game he most likly would have ran.

  32. Broncos Born & Raised says:

Greatness, I was just referring to Carnage’s comment that implied Tebow hadn’t done anything to try to get better in our offense.

  33. Greatness007 says:

lol Badluck He ran an Opt/ spead offense. That was the play calls. A Run first QB Drops back to pass and just runs. He doesnt do that.

  34. Greatness007 says:

BBR I know just telling you why they say that.

  35. daddybronc says:

Carnage showed his hand when he arbitrarily states that RB’s – run and QB’s – throw. Where he got that I’ll never know. ???

TT is just not what Carnage wants in a QB. I respect that he is willing to stick with his chosen team though he doesn’t prefer this type of QB.

On the other hand I have good news for Carnage. Tebow is going to have to throw the ball against Miami and against Detroit. Both of those teams are going to attempt to contain Tebow and he will have to throw.

We will win the Miami game because they won’t be able to contain both Tebow and McGahee – McGahee should have 3 TD’s. Tebow will throw for about 290 yards. I expect a turnover from Timmy but I expect him to pass for an additional 2 TD’s. Add a defensive TD and we will be looking good. Bay – you can put me down for DEN – 45 / MIA – 10. The coolaid tastes great! Tonight’s game won’t change my prediction.

I won’t predict the Lions game yet – will see how we do next Sunday.

  36. FLBroncoGator says:

For his whole career, Tebow has thrown for just under 50% but he’s also thrown twice as many touchdowns as interceptions and several passes hit his receiver’s hands and were dropped. As far as I’m concerned, any pass you can get your hands on, as a receiver in the NFL, you should catch. He’s basically played 1 game this year and only threw for 40% but he had a TD, ZERO interceptions, fumbles, or sacks. AND he’s run for more touchdowns than he’s thrown but he was playing QB, not RB. A QB’s job is the be the team leader and captain and either hand the ball off, pass it, or run it, according to the way the play unfolds. Is he a pure passer? No. He’s just a pure leader, winner, and play maker that plays QB so to say that he doesn’t play QB well is purely ridiculous. People don’t win Heisman’s as a Sophomore (and be a serious contender for 3 of them at that) at back to back National Championships in the SEC by playing QB poorly. If you’ve never seen TT thread a needle with a football from 50+ yards, than you haven’t watched him play very many games. I’ll take a QB that outscores his opponents while he’s on the field, with no turnovers, no matter HOW he gets it done, any day of the week!
