NFL Games to Watch

October 16th, 2011 - 10:59am by Kenny Legan

Even though the Broncos have a bye this week, that doesn’t mean the NFL is taking a break too. There are plenty of meaningful and exciting matchups to watch this Sunday and Monday. So take this non-Broncos weekend as an opportunity to take in a couple important games that could affect the Broncos in the weeks to come.

Sunday, 2:05 p.m. MDT, CBS: Cleveland at Oakland

The Chargers and Chiefs also have a bye this week, making the Raiders the only AFC West team to have a game Sunday. The Raiders are 3-2 and only one game back of San Diego for the division lead. Meanwhile, the Browns are 2-2 and hoping to get out of the cellar of the AFC North. This is a key game for the Raiders at home as it will set the early tone in terms of if they will compete for a division title, or fight for a wild-card spot.

Monday, 6:30 p.m. MDT, ESPN: New York Jets at Miami

Not only is this a Monday night game, but it also features the Broncos’ next opponent, the Dolphins. The Jets are coming off a tough loss to New England, and at 2-3, will be trying to make up ground on the 4-1 division-leading Patriots and Bills. Meanwhile, the Dolphins will play their first game with Matt Moore at quarterback, after starter Chad Henne went down last week with a season-ending injury. At 0-4, the Dolphins are looking for their first win, and will have a shortened week next week before the Broncos come to town.

Also, how many guys on this roster are hold overs from the Shanahan era?! I’m surprised he’s hung around this long! His trade request probably comes from being under 3 head coaches in his short 4 years. It’s tough to develop a rapport with team mates when a new coach trades/cuts them away to bring in a new scheme every season.

  2. bronctario says:

Unfortunately I’ve been having a tough time getting ANY Broncos games in my part of Ontario this season, (Apparently if you live in Ontario you are automatically an Vikings, GB, or Bills fan). So the only Broncos I’ve seen the last 2 games are my blackberry play-by-play updates… Life has been rough…

  3. brian_schneider says:

McD is going to tell Bradford to target Lloyd only about once or twice a game just so the Rams don’t have to send a 5th rounder our way. LOL!

My honest opinion of this whole thing now is they made the Tebow move, now Fox and Co. are making other moves to see what else they may have. As the WR seemed deep maybe they thought it was a good time to get rid of some guys. I just hope Thomas can stay healthy long enough to make a reception. I’m also guessing with Tebow they’ll probably use two TEs maybe and that’s why we won’t need a deep WR core, I don’t know. I’m not surprised Lloyd or Royal want to be traded.

  4. brian_schneider says:

    Or “traded” in Lloyds case.

  5. mcmcnees says:

McBean arrested for stalking?…. COME ON!!!!!!! BRONCOS…. GET IT TOGETHER.

  6. shaztah says:

One name you will NEVER EVER hear on an arrest report is TIM TEBOW!

  7. baylinorcrush says:

Brian, I know you don’t have the time to read older posts so here is a repeat of an earlier one of mine from yesterday which addresses yours:

About trading possibly Lloyd and Royal Fox doesn’t care, all he wants is have one solid receiver and he has Decker and a couple more mainly for decoy, not exactly exciting but we all knew that ever since we got him, at least I did, some hoped he would change here in Denver but I don’t think so, it’s gonna be double TEs, FB, that new one we just acquired, and McGee running the rock with Moreno sharing some of the load. I think the most important thing from here on out is have all our TEs healthy.

so here is a repeat of an earlier one of mine from yesterday which addresses yours:

  8. baylinorcrush says:

No worries about McBean, Fox doesn’t care about DTs either, LOL.

  9. baylinorcrush says:

That last repeat line above was meant to be deleted obviously.

  10. baylinorcrush says:

Tebow, indecent exposure, the Jockey line? Just kidding.

  11. brian_schneider says:

Thanks, baylinorcrush. I think it will look like an alternate version of what Shanny used to use here..maybe Fox had some of Elway’s input on the whole situation???

  12. baylinorcrush says:

Elway’s input on the whole situation is most likely this:

Take as much of the pressure off of Tebow as you can, that’s how it worked best for John when he had TD.

  13. milehighmagic88 says:

In my humble opinion bay, I don’t think Fox’s idea of offense is all that boring. It’s good old fashioned football, 3 yards in a cloud of dust. Most fans these days hate that kind of thing because they wanna see the offense spread out and the QB flinging the ball all over the place.

Even though I’m a young man I actually prefer the old fashioned model of pounding the rock down the opponents throats. I’m a little weird in that respect, I know, but that’s exactly the kind of football I’ve been craving.

    Just me I guess…

  14. BeastFromEast92 says:

Like I said,we should have traded LLoyd (the one year wonder) in the off season, but nobody liked my idea at the time, probably could have gotten at least a 3rd round pick in this years draft!!!

  15. baylinorcrush says:

And it’s exactly how Fox has operated with his QBs all along so they should be in total unison, our only chance to watch exciting football will be when plays break down and Tebow improvises, otherwise a healthy dose of vanilla but if that means running it down opponents’ throats I’m all for it.

  16. milehighmagic88 says:

BFE I’m starting to think they considered trading Lloyd as well as Orton in the offseason but the lockout made it difficult to get a deal done in time. So instead they decided to restructure the roster during the bye week. I think all the changes going on right now are simply the result of the weird circumstances of this season’s setup.

  17. baylinorcrush says:

Not just you 88, trenches guy here too all the way.

  18. BeastFromEast92 says:

If D.Thomas stays healthy, this wasn’t that bad a move but if he gets hurt again,we have no down the field threat,so all teams will load the box to stop the run,and the short passes and bubble screens, you have to have a WR that can at least keep the Defense honest, nobody is afraid of Decker,Willis,or Royal beating them deep!
    They will double team Decker!!

  19. baylinorcrush says:

And I don’t remember ever saying boring anyway, not exciting does not equal boring, it can equal efficient just as well.

  20. milehighmagic88 says:

That’s true I know you are a big trenches guy. It’s funny when I talk to people my age about football because I tell them I get annoyed with all the explosive passing games around the league and all the high scoring contests and they think I’m from another planet, LOL.

I guess I was born a generation or two too late.

  21. CarnageBronc says:

FLbroncoGator….it seems as though you are more of a GATOR fan than a Bronco one…but I will again for the 1.000th time retort to my Tebow comment….Tebow has played QB primarily in 4 games in which the team is 1-3. Sure you can say that Orton started the last 1 but the fact remains. In those games at qb, Tebow has consistently over or undethrown receivers, thrown INT, or made bad decisions, which is bad QB play, what he has done is made plays with his legs which is good RB play. So again I say, I do not expect Tebow to play well as far as a “QB” is concerned, but he will probably run the ball fairly well. Miami is not a good defensive team, so there are opportunities there for him.

  22. milehighmagic88 says:

sorry I wasn’t implying that you think it’s a boring style. I just mean thats the general feeling about the 3 yards in a cloud of dust model to the average football fan.

  23. BeastFromEast92 says:

Tebow has only started 3 games and played a little in a few other games,he hasn’t even gotten his feet wet in the NFL yet,he will get better, afterall he is a Rookie,Orton is a 7 year vet,no comparison there!
Tebow has 11 games to prove what he can do,I for one think he should get this year and next year,it’s hard for a Rookie QB to prove his worth in 14 games, imo!

  24. bronco life says:

if we can run thats great it will help us with ball control and keep our d of the field so they stay fresh which is good considering we dont have much depth at certain defensive positions!GETTIN REAL TOUGH WITHOUT SOME BRONCO FOOTBALL CANT WAIT FOR SUNDAY!!!!!!GUNNA TAKE IT TO THOSE DOLPHINS!!!!

  25. BeastFromEast92 says:

88,I’m starting to think EFX don’t know anymore about trading than McD did, they are no better than him for giving away talent are they???

  26. BeastFromEast92 says:

I’ll wait till Thursday to give my score prediction, since I won’t be here Friday,I’m gonna wait and see if the glass man is in one piece for the Miami game!

  27. 1nOnlyTRB says:

I dont think its fair to give TT that loss agaisnt the chargers Carnage … he was the only reason we came close to winning … thats like giving Beck the loss to philly.

He will make plays with his legs and his arms and will give us a good chance to win imo … his QB play is not stellar as far as reads, accuracy, taking snaps … drop back … but he can buy time till theres a receiver open and improvise when required. The QB stuff I expect him to learn on the job. At least I pray he does … and if he doesn;t … he doesn’t … just is what it is.

Been out all day … just saw that blloyd is traded to St louis … an offense he has had success in before … a young QB that could use him. They have banged up guys like amendola, simms walker and danario alexander … so its a welcome addition i’m sure … not sure how high the conditional compensation goes but I hope it ends up as a 3rd. Now please keep Royal and lets see what he can do this year and we will see if we should sign him. I think he can do it. I really do. I just beleive in everybody lol … not unless u have burned me multiple times.

    TRB

  28. Broncos Born & Raised says:

Carnage – I see your logic about the receiving core. I can ride with you if you are saying better than 50%. Admittedly Tebow has made a lot of bad throws, but he’s also made some real important throws. That’s what I think we can expect from him this season and I am ready for it. And Also ready to see continuous improvement. If Donovan McNaab could take the Eagles to 4 straight NFC championships and one Superbowl when his best passing year in college was worse than Tim’s worst year, I think it’s fair to say Tim has a good shot at being successful. I get that college success or lack thereof doesn’t always translate to the pros, but I personally don’t see why it’s decided by many that he can’t make it. I think that camp is just as blinded by Tebowmania as the camp that says we’re winning the Super Bowl this year.

  29. milehighmagic88 says:

Well in my personal opinion, talent is a strong word for Lloyd. I love him as a vertical threat but he’s had the same problem here that he had with his other teams… he’s one dimensional. All he does is run vertical routes. With Fox’s coaching philosophy that doesn’t mean much.

But you’re right, the EFX choices so far are a little puzzling. I think the best move would be to drop the X.

  30. BeastFromEast92 says:

Hope Orton is gone by tomorrow, tired of looking at his face!!!

  31. Broncos Born & Raised says:

John Elway was 4-6 in his first 10 starts.

  32. BeastFromEast92 says:

LLoyd was needed to be our vertical threat, every team needs one,D.Thomas can definitely be a vertical threat, but Damn he can’t stay healthy!

  33. BeastFromEast92 says:

If Tebow goes 5-6,I think that would be a great win/loss record for him!
considering the schedule is somewhat easier than we thought it would be,it’s possible we could finish at 6-10!

  34. BeastFromEast92 says:

I don’t think Tebow should be graded totally on win/losses but performance on the field!

  35. strandoftds says:

Mortenson reporting that the raiders are interested at bringing in QB David Warren.

  36. Orange_Crusher says:

Tebow has 27 games at least to prove he can get it done…

Hate to break the news to the TT detractors but Tebow is our QB for the future. JE already said it on camera, that he looks forward to working with Tim during the “next” offseason..

I’m just really glad to say that all the “speculation” is about to be put to rest…..

It’s hard to understand people who expect him to walk onto the field after half time with no practice with the first team and expect him to pass perfectly, and then base his future performance from that small window of stats… Just seems like a slanted way to cast a shadow over the kid before he gets an honest to goodness oportunity to practice and play with the 1st team…

Though I’m sure that no amount of passing yards, TD’s or wins will ever douse the ever-eternal pessimists or the dejected Otonites….LOL

    ILMSDB!!!!

  37. strandoftds says:

BFE, agreed. I` just want to see if Tebow gets better every week, progresses.

  38. milehighmagic88 says:

Maybe Willis can be that guy. He’s shown me good things running vertical routes the last couple of preseasons but he hasn’t really gotten the chance in the regular season either because of injuries or too many quality WRs in front of him.

I know Lloyd gave us that vertical dimension but it really bothers me how every time he catches the ball in space he just lies down, and if a DB is making contact with him as he’s catching the ball he drops it every single time. That kind of cowardly receiver play is super annoying to me. Just saying. Rod Smith and Ed McCaffery’s skin must be crawling every time they see one of those plays.

Plus BFE, I know you’re one of the biggest Tebow supporters on here. What if behind closed doors Lloyd is anti-Tebow? We really don’t need that if Tebow is our long term guy.

Just trying to see this from all angles so I don’t get upset about the small compensation of the trade, I hope you understand.

  39. strandoftds says:

Tim will get a fair shot.

  40. BeastFromEast92 says:

I’d just straight out cut Orton tomorrow, unless somebody gives us an offer, which is highly unlikely,we save what…3.5 million by cutting him??

  41. O&BinCostaRica says:

Some say it’s 3.5 mil. Give them to Clady and the o-line. They have been getting better every week.

  42. strandoftds says:

I believe that Lloyd is anti-Tebow. He`s pro Orton-McD, thats why he`s heading to the Rams.

  43. Orange_Crusher says:

Why wait until tomorrow BFE!!!!!! lol

  44. milehighmagic88 says:

See, that’s why I think trading Lloyd for anything is a brilliant move. If nothing else it shows that the organization has Tebow’s back, which most people would agree is the right thing to do for the future. Knowing they have his back will only give Tebow confidence to go out and lay it all on the line.

  45. BeastFromEast92 says:

88,I think LLoyd is anti-Tebow,so good riddens to him, just wished we could have gotten a 3rd round draft pick for him.

OC,I hope your right bro,Tebow should get the rest of this year AND next year to prove himself, you can’t judge a Rookie QB in less than one season!

  46. BeastFromEast92 says:

    Cut Orton today!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

btw,the Rams are dead last in scoring Offense,I know they have injuries, but McD isn’t looking too good, and that makes me happy!!!

  47. milehighmagic88 says:

Yeah I think the mistake was when the front office announced that they were seeking a 3rd through 5th rounder for Lloyd. You can’t come out and say that right away. You have to let teams start the bidding not knowing what you want. Once they know what you want you lose all your leverage and you’re basically looking for the highest possible 6th round pick, LOL.

    Sad, but true.

  48. BeastFromEast92 says:

Clady needs to be resigned soon,no sense in waiting and letting him wonder,Hell if there’s a better LT in the NFL,I’ve not seen him!!!

  49. milehighmagic88 says:

If Orton does get cut it’d be nice to see Weber move up to the active roster and be the 3rd string guy. I think at the very least he has potential to be a quality backup for a long time.

  50. Orange_Crusher says:

Did they really “announce” that or did it just get slipped out by one of the potential trading partners? just asking..
