NFL Games to Watch

October 16th, 2011 - 10:59am by Kenny Legan

Even though the Broncos have a bye this week, that doesn’t mean the NFL is taking a break too. There are plenty of meaningful and exciting matchups to watch this Sunday and Monday. So take this non-Broncos weekend as an opportunity to take in a couple important games that could affect the Broncos in the weeks to come.

Sunday, 2:05 p.m. MDT, CBS: Cleveland at Oakland

The Chargers and Chiefs also have a bye this week, making the Raiders the only AFC West team to have a game Sunday. The Raiders are 3-2 and only one game back of San Diego for the division lead. Meanwhile, the Browns are 2-2 and hoping to get out of the cellar of the AFC North. This is a key game for the Raiders at home as it will set the early tone in terms of if they will compete for a division title, or fight for a wild-card spot.

Monday, 6:30 p.m. MDT, ESPN: New York Jets at Miami

Not only is this a Monday night game, but it also features the Broncos’ next opponent, the Dolphins. The Jets are coming off a tough loss to New England, and at 2-3, will be trying to make up ground on the 4-1 division-leading Patriots and Bills. Meanwhile, the Dolphins will play their first game with Matt Moore at quarterback, after starter Chad Henne went down last week with a season-ending injury. At 0-4, the Dolphins are looking for their first win, and will have a shortened week next week before the Broncos come to town.

Yeah Bay. That is SHAMEFUL! DISGUSTING! Might as well have given him away! Feels like the McD trades of the past…

  2. baylinorcrush says:

88, you’re not here often, so you probably missed that Lloyd openly said to the press he was unhappy with the way Fox was not getting him the ball more often in his offense and that they were relying too much on the running game, that right there ought to do you in on most teams, LOL.

  3. baylinorcrush says:

88, you have always been a gentleman in your arguing with me, and I’ve withstood much worse than that over the years, LOL.

  4. milehighmagic88 says:

Well you’re right I haven’t posted much in the last year or so because I’ve been so busy lately. But I make a point to scan the blogs just about every night before I go to bed so I actually did see that.

  5. O&BinCostaRica says:

    Interesting Twitter post:

    Denver_Broncos Denver Broncos
TE J. Thomas and WR D. Thomas are back at #Broncos practice today. Royal & Bailey are practicing as well.

No Mention of B.Lloyd. Confirms stuff doesn’t it?

  6. milehighmagic88 says:

But I’m thinking that just since the Chargers game he’s probably taken offense to Orton’s benching to the coaching staff and it just added to their frustrations about him complaining about the offensive scheme earlier this year. That’s just what I suspect is going on.

  7. milehighmagic88 says:

    O&B,

That and the fact that the trade has been confirmed publicly already, LOL.

  8. milehighmagic88 says:

It’s good to hear that Julius is back at practice though, he should be a nice security blanket underneath for Tebow. I think he has huge potential.

  9. baylinorcrush says:

What makes it all wrong in this Lloyd trade is that the dealine is like a day and half from now so they very well could of waited for it to let teams interested raise up the antes sinece there was more than one team interested, EFX just plain don’t know how to negotiate and Xanders is probably the main culprit in all that since like you say our trading and dealings were horrendous under McD too. In fact, talking of visionay, Xanders is one that I have politely always said has proven very little to me and other than working well in the draft with Elway and Fox this time around and he still has me plenty worried at a position of that magnitude, he is no GM material in my mind whatsoever, can’t even get the upper hand in simple trade negotiations, EVER.

  10. baylinorcrush says:

You need a man with a business background to enter into those negotiations and it’s painfully obvious Xanders has none.

  11. baylinorcrush says:

This had to be a clue, LOL:

This morning, the Broncos told Lloyd he did not have to report to the team’s facility at Dove Valley.

  12. milehighmagic88 says:

Yeah, Xanders definitely makes me a little nervous most of the time. Would it be that bad just to let Xanders go after this year and let Elway run the personnel department by himself? I know former players don’t have a great track record with running personnel departments but I think most of us would agree that it’s different with Elway. He knows good football players when he sees them and he does have quite a bit of experience starting and running businesses of his own. Maybe he could handle it all without Xanders help. Just a thought…

  13. O&BinCostaRica says:

I mean if he had taken a 5, but with conditions to even a 3, then ok. But a 6 conditioned to a 5, that is HORRIBLE. I mean, he goes in there and has a fantastic year, the most we get is a 5th rounder? With the new rookie scale and everything? DISGUSTING!

  14. carnagebronc says:

So i get bashed for saying Tebow still wins the game……he has not played quarterback well in any game….even the Texans game he played qb poorly…..running the ball has so far been what he does well….

  15. broncsbomber66 says:

I am okay with this trade, if and when it goes through. It forces the young guys to come through and try to make the most of the opportunity. I would love to see some Riley mixed in there as well as some more Willis. The jury is still out on Thomas but I love the potential there. Kid just needs to get healthy already. Royal has been very “quiet.” For some reason, the Broncos don’t know how to utilize his skills, and it makes it difficult to watch the success that Wes Welker has had in New England knowing that Royal can have that kind of impact.

  16. baylinorcrush says:

That’s about the only solution because Bowlen basically painted himself in a corner as far as being able to get a quality GM when he named Elway V.P. of Football Operations. No good GM will ever want to take the job with Elway over their heads and understandibly so.

  17. O&BinCostaRica says:

The 6th round pick in the Brandon Lloyd-to-Rams trade will turn to a 5th round pick if he catches 30 passes the rest of the season.

I think 30 passes is a gimme. But should have done something like if 100 then a 3rd round.

  18. milehighmagic88 says:

I’d obviously rather have a higher pick than what we’re getting, but the Jets got Santonio Holmes for a 5th rounder if I’m not mistaken. I don’t think the trade market is that high for receivers anymore especially ones that might have even a slight hint of character issues, no matter how talented they are.

    Just saying…

I’m gonna have to look up the facts about that Santonio trade, but I seem to remember Pittsburgh trading him for very little, and that guy caught a Super Bowl winning touchdown after all.

  19. baylinorcrush says:

    Just in:

The 6th round pick in the Brandon Lloyd-to-Rams trade will turn to a 5th round pick if he catches 30 passes the rest of the season.

  20. carnagebronc says:

    5 is good…..we were at 7

  21. O&BinCostaRica says:

    Beat ya to it! LOL!

  22. baylinorcrush says:

So in essence it should end up being a 5th.

  23. broncsbomber66 says:

You guys are assuming there were more offers on the table for Lloyd. I find it hard to believe that we would turn down a better offer before settling for the Rams.

  24. carnagebronc says:

    Lloyd isnt an elite wr

  25. baylinorcrush says:

Yeah, but that’s only because I was busy saying something intelligent about Bowlen, Elway and Xanders, haha.

  26. milehighmagic88 says:

Well maybe an Elway-only front office is the way to go then. If that’s the case it’s sink or swim with Elway. And let’s face it, if he carries a personnel department on his back the way he carried his teammates on his back for so long it wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world.

  27. O&BinCostaRica says:

    True blue!

  28. carnagebronc says:

Got to buy a Miller jersey…..he seems to be the only guy secure in a job….

  29. milehighmagic88 says:

    broncsbomber,

I agree I too would love to see Riley get some work. That guy was a stud in the preseason. I think he can develop into a quality starter. Plus, he and Tebow seemed to have good chemistry.

  30. baylinorcrush says:

We are not assuming, it was clearly reported other teams were interested, Xanders just has no clue as how to negotiate a trade, nor does anyone else on the staff at this point, if they did they would of dragged it to the deadline, let other teams realize if you don’t want him we’ll keep him, that’s called bluffing, it’s done daily in the business world everywhere, just because it’s the Broncos does not make them good at everything, that’s just a naive way to look at things, with all due respect to bomber.

  31. milehighmagic88 says:

Next rant on my list… Cut Goody!

I liked Andre at first but he’s given up too many crucial first downs this year, especially giving up that big play to Malcolm Floyd on that 3rd and 10 in the SD game. Had he not been so lost on that play we probably would have won that game.

I almost threw a handful of heavy objects at my TV at that moment…

  32. killerkod says:

Goodman should be worth at least a 2nd rounder, no?

    bahh hahahahaha!!!

Just cut the man………….he’s nothing more than a liability.

  33. baylinorcrush says:

I hate it when they do those trades at lunch time, gotta go eat now before I pass out.

  34. milehighmagic88 says:

Well I guess it’s good for Lloyd’s sake that he is going to St. Louis where he will be reunited with McD, the first coach to ever really believe in him.

I think it’s hilarious that the Rams were stoked about Josh coming over to help Bradford develop. If anything it looks as though he has ruined the poor guy. That seems to be McD’s specialty… Stripping talented players of all their talents, LOL.

  35. milehighmagic88 says:

Exactly killerkod, we’re young and inexperienced at CB, but I’d much rather see Vaughn or Wilhite out there with Champ than Goody. He’s taking the “good” right out of Goody this year, ha ha

  36. Broncfalls says:

Hey ya! Great conversation regarding these trades.

my take is….Fox is fine with the WR’s on this team. This is about cleaning up the locker room now. And if you can get some draft help while making your journey, why not?

    …great post bronc fans!

    GO GET EM’ BOYS!

  37. FLBroncoGator says:

armadillo, thank you for taking the podium. You’re a smart man. Let me know if you need any help in the kitchen, with that pie. I got your back lol. Anyone saying that Tebow plays horribly at QB, as usual, is laughable at best. NO credibility whatsoever. NONE!

  38. milehighmagic88 says:

Just heard Brandon Lloyd is joining Sportscenter live at this hour if anyone is able to watch, most likely on a phone interview I’m guessing. It’ll be interesting to hear his reaction to the trade.

  39. broncsbomber66 says:

You all think Royal gets traded too.

  40. milehighmagic88 says:

I don’t know about Royal, from what I’ve heard nobody is interested. I’m starting to think that it’s not that Royal is being misused in Denver but maybe his talents are limited to a special kind of system. He thrived under Shanahan’s system. I bet the only way for him to revive his career is to go sign with Washington in the offseason because clearly no other coaching staff believes in him. He’s just an average to above average receiver who was perfect for Shanny’s offense.

  41. imready says:

Adam Sheffler just report on the Lloyd trade. He also mentioned that Eddie Royal is also on the trading block.

  42. milehighmagic88 says:

Yeah imready, but according to reports online no one has shown any interest in Royal yet. I doubt that one happens. His production has been declining and he has injury bug issues. I have a feeling no one is going to bite on that one.

  43. b4life says:

The Lloyd trade is understandable, especially to St. Louis. The market for a 30 yr old journeyman WR is not that high and i bet McDaniels was the main reason the Rams got Lloyd. I think another guy who should be traded is DJ Williams, with the emergence of Woodyard Denver has a surplus of linebackers maybe a trade for Asuate Samuel wouldn’t be a bad idea does anybody know if the Eagles are shopping him around?

  44. baylinorcrush says:

Demaryius Thomas is expected to make his season debut Sunday at Miami, helping replace Lloyd as the team’s best deep threat. Thomas had surgery to repair an injured Achilles tendon in February and surgery to repair a broken pinky finger in early September.

Today marks only his third practice since last season.

The only player sitting out today’s practice is safety Brian Dawkins, who suffered a head/neck injury against San Diego on Oct. 9.

  45. Broncfalls says:

    Here’s my other take on the Royal situaiton, my opinion on the conversation;

Fox: “Eddie, there’s a place for you on this team. Your lil’ partner in crime spoke out and got his hind end traded to the Rams! Wanna play Bronco football?”

Eddie: “Coach, I don’t see what my role is. You’re going to run the ball and with Tim back there running around like a Florid Gator chicken with his head cut off…it’s only gonna get worse. I would like to be traded!”

Fox to his secretary: “Bonnie, get me the Dolphins on line 1 please, Hang tight there Eddie, we’ll get you hooked up real nice..hang on buddy!!”

    GO GET EM’ BOYS!

  46. milehighmagic88 says:

Let’s hope Timmy doesn’t throw too hard at Demaryius on Sunday… wouldn’t want him to hurt his other baby finger, LOL.

But in all seriousness, Mr. Glass needs to do something to stay on the field. He has all the talent in the world if he could just healthy long enough to develop his skills.

  47. randy2191 says:

ok so i thaught about it long and hard and decided ill take the 5th round pick happily.. i mean the dude was leaving at year end and best we would get conditional is a 7th .. and i think if DMT steps up DMT decker and willis/royal in slot we are just as good if not alot better

  48. bronctario says:

I’ve been a Royal fan since he was drafted, but he really only seemed to excel as a receiver on quick slants from the slot for an easy 8-10 yards, if memory serves me. Then injuries started to hampered him once he was promoted from 3rd WR (A lot like what happened to Hester when the Bears were trying to make him their primary receiver). I’d like to see Royal stay on as a true return threat, and used less as a WR to prtect his talent; He is apparently still rated as a top 10 PR/KR in the league coming into this season. I’d love to see it happen, but it seems that team don’t often option for purely positional players anymore. Just my opinion.

  49. Broncfalls says:

I will be surprised if Royal is here past the dealine!

I know I have been sounding like a broken record so I apologize if I do but it’s the basis of my opinion. It’s the locker room! If you have a player “requesting” a trade what you really have is a player not wanting to play for you anymore. It is the beginning of a small cell that need to be removed immediately before it spreads!

    GO GET EM’ BOYS!

  50. milehighmagic88 says:

    bronctario,

While I agree with you that Royal is an excellent returner, have you been watching Cosby on returns the last few weeks? He looks like a stud at that position. I think that hurts Royal’s position on this team a lot because now he can’t use his return skills as leverage for playing time anymore.
