NFL Extends Roger Goodell’s Contract

January 25th, 2012 - 3:45pm by Stuart Zaas

The NFL announced that Commissioner Roger Goodell’s contract has been extended through the 2018 season.

“It is the only place I have ever wanted to work,” Goodell told the Associated Press. “I am grateful for the contributions and counsel of NFL owners in managing our league, the talented staff that supports us, and the players and coaches that perform their magic on the field. It is truly a team effort. I am eagerly looking ahead to the challenge of building on our momentum and doing all we can to improve our game for the fans and everyone that is part of our league.”

Goodell became the league’s commissioner in 2006, taking over for Paul Tagliabue. This past year, Goodell helped negotiate a new 10-year collective bargaining agreement with the NFLPA. He also oversaw nine-year extensions of the NFL’s broadcast television contracts with NBC, CBS and FOX. Prior to the start of the 2011 season, the league agreed to a $15.2 billion extension that gives ESPN the broadcast rights to Monday Night Football through the 2021 season.

Broncos Owner Pat Bowlen is a member of the league’s compensation committee, which approved the extension.

“I speak on behalf of 32 NFL club owners in saying we are fortunate to have Roger Goodell as our commissioner,” said Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur Blank, who is the chairman of the compensation committee. “Since becoming commissioner in 2006, the NFL — already the leader in professional sports — has gotten even stronger. As evidenced by this contract extension, we have great confidence in Roger’s vision and leadership of the NFL. Our clubs, players and fans could not ask for a better CEO.”

    lame

  2. strandoftds says:

Goodell is power hungry. In just a few years the NFL wiil sucumb to playing flag football under Roger Goodell`s watch. Sissy football.

  3. sndvl says:

What are the rules on signing our own players? Do we have to wait til FA opens up?

    Broncos Country Strong 2012!

  4. strandoftds says:

If I remember correctly, a team can sign their own players right away.

  5. Tide Bronco says:

You’re welcome, Turtle, and I hope it explained to everyone why the Broncos were actually $9 million over cap at the end of the lockout, but then became $22 million under cap going into the regular season, even after all of the rookie contracts were signed.

Had a great day, and thanks for asking. Later.

New info to deliver. The real reason Champ is down about Dennis Allen leaving is that Allen promised him he would stay at CB. Now with a new DC. Champ might have to move to safety. A move Champ has been putting off for 2 yrs now. We will see where this goes that’s for sure!!!

  7. baylinorcrush says:

Glad somebody else finally confirmed the 22 under instead of the 9 over which was an old figure before the new cba small print was finally understood and taken into account, nothing like repeating myself, LOL.

  8. baylinorcrush says:

By the way it was Mile High Report who reported it correctly first, the DP then corrected themselves and even gave the credit to MHR.

  9. baylinorcrush says:

    I’m glad I’m not a capologist, haha.

  10. BeastFromEast92 says:

Heck we covered that about 6 months ago didn’t we?

  11. baylinorcrush says:

Bailey has to be the most disappointed player about Allen, thanks for the info 007.

  12. baylinorcrush says:

Yeah, deja vu for us, but then again some bloggers come on and missed it and want to revisit the whole thing….

  13. strandoftds says:

If you were, then you can go to Washington DC and balance the budget. The USA needs a miracle. LOL

  14. BeastFromEast92 says:

LMAO…….Turtle get with the program dude, lol.

  15. baylinorcrush says:

Turtle said he was haying, which is a real good reason considering his line of work.

  16. baylinorcrush says:

Let the Obamalogists do that, haha.

  17. BeastFromEast92 says:

You’d think Champ would rather cover TEs and RBs instead of elite WRs,but maybe he just wants to be remembered as one of the greatest CBs of all time period!

  18. BeastFromEast92 says:

    Gotcha Bay! I understand now!

  19. baylinorcrush says:

He’s already done that with record number of pro bowls for a CB, 11 I believe.

  20. BeastFromEast92 says:

    Obamalogists…LMAO!

  21. BeastFromEast92 says:

I wonder why he dosen’t want to convert to Safety?

  22. baylinorcrush says:

I’d love to see him at free safety myself since it seems easier to find decent CBs than safeties in the draft, look at last year.

  23. BeastFromEast92 says:

    I heard that!

  24. BeastFromEast92 says:

If we could find a decent CB to play opposite Harris and Champ and Carter at Safety, and maybe Sqid at Nickel Corner that might work.

  25. strandoftds says:

LMOA! Please no, their digging a bigger ditch that we`ll never be able to get out of. Thank God for a fallback like the NFL!! Soon NFL players will be playing for chicken feed the way things are going.

  26. strandoftds says:

That`ll ad some NFL years to Champs career. I`m all for it.

  27. BeastFromEast92 says:

Goody’s career is over, after his injury he lost it,I hate to see it happen, but it is what it is!

  28. BeastFromEast92 says:

Alright guys time for chow……..Bronc on”

  29. strandoftds says:

We need a tall physical young CB that can get the job done, good young talent.

  30. MANDIEGO says:

Why did we have to let Allen go? Why did we allow the raiders to even interview him? Couldn’t we have said no and kept him form leaving?

  31. BroncoRenegade says:

Its all right with allens departure because I think if we can sign Del Rio we will really have some thing special on the defensive sidde if the ball just wait and see.

  32. denver0723 says:

I wonder if Fox had his eye on Del Rio as soon as the Jags fired him? It would expain why he was willing to let Allen interview.

  33. BroncoRenegade says:

lol fox can be unpredictable at times with his signings.

  34. 1nOnlyTRB says:

Never knew that about champ … and here I am pushing for champ to be FS because I think it would help our team leaps and bounds … but if the man doesn’t want to I don’t think he should have too. He is still a premiere CB. If he had become a liability then the choice wouldn’t be his but he hasn’t. Goodman on the other hand … liability lol … he gets no say. But if champ wants to play CB … cool, we will just suffer bad safety play till people get better.

    TRB

  35. sndvl says:

Champ has earned the right to play CB. Any new DC we get needs to watch film from just the playoff loss. Count how many times Tom Brady threw at him. Then ask himself “Can Champ Cover”….

    C’mon man…lmao

    Champ Bailey Strong 2012!

  36. shaztah says:

Hey guys, had a busy day and trying to survive off of 5 hours of sleep in 2 days. The stress is crazy. I just wanted to chime in on the DP book. I read it today and let me just say YUCK!!!! It was all about Tebow. That is saying something since I am known as a tebowite. It was poorly written and it was a jumbled mess. I bought the kindle version so I don’t know if maybe the download got jumbled but I am not wasting 20.00 on the paper version. I was expecting a story on the team not on Tebow. I have Tebow’s book so I did not need another version of that. The repitition was unbearable and it was not worth the 4.99 I spent.

  37. shaztah says:

I guess it was a cheap attempt at making money.

  38. shaztah says:

So are there any teams still in need of a HC?

  39. sndvl says:

I believe Tampa is still searching?

  40. sndvl says:

With the announcement the Colts have hired Baltimore DC Pagano as their new HC, that leaves only Tampa Bay looking to fill their open Head Coaching vacancy!

    I found that from aol.com

  41. BeastFromEast92 says:

I’d rather have JDR as our DC anyway,we might have just lucked out and don’t know it yet!!!!!!

  42. sndvl says:

If anybody is interested, Mike Mayock put out his big board-

    http://m.nfl.com/news/09000d5d82648f38/early-positionbyposition-rankings-for-2012-nfl-draft/

Alabama has a lot of prospects! Zack Brown surprised me a bit.
One name I didn’t see, and I’m assuming it’s because of the injury he suffered, is DT Jared Crick from Nebraska.

  43. sndvl says:

Haha! Fox is definitely staying in his lane…

“I guess I’d like to have someone in place some time before next season, that’s the deadline,” Fox said with a laugh. “More than likely, we’ll feel good about it when we make a move. But we’ll do what we think would be the best fit, and we’ll keep trying to make the kind of progress we want on that side of the ball.”

    Broncos Country Strong!

  44. alex4serg says:

I am actually looking forward to seeing champ move to safety. I don’t see how it is any worse. It will extend his career. It might allow him to to make a bigger impact on the field. The best CB in history can be expected to shutdown a HoF receiver, or cover have the field. But an impact safety has a role in every single play.

I am looking forward to seeing Champ in a safety role, because he is going to be in everyone’s face on every play, and I bet I will start getting more interceptions too.

  45. alex4serg says:

Also, I have heard interviews where he talks about wanting to be like some of the greats such as Woodson and Sanders that capped of a HoF CB career with HoF caliber safety play.

  46. alex4serg says:

heh, I meant he* would start getting more interceptions.

Freudian slip I suppose. I love my broncos. haha

  47. shaztah says:

I wonder how badly the Ravens defense will suffer after losing their DC. They have been pretty dominent for quite some time.

  48. killerkod says:

    Morning Everyone!

I was sitting at home watching TV and The Longest Yard was on……..the original with good ole Burt.

It was the first time I watched it and I enjoyed it. Made me want to have a defense with a nasty attitude like those Mean Machine players! haha

oh, and my wife said,”wow, that’s burt reynolds? He was pretty handsome when he was young!” hahaha

  49. imready says:

When you have a perrenial pro bowler at CB on one side of the field the other CB is going to look bad, period. Goodie takes some chances, that’s for sure, a couple may have won us games last season. Saftey can be a very physical position, Champ has never shyed away from physical play but you can’t blame him for not wanting to be bashing into someone on every play as he gets older. I do think we need to prepare for the future at the CB position and need depth but I also think all the questions would be hushed if we get a DT that can consistantly get pressure up the middle. The one series against the Pats when we did get pressure up the middle made Brady falter and convinced me we have no need bigger than that to fill in the off season. The front 7 is key to quality defense.

  50. baylinorcrush says:

Something interesting from Woody on more than one angle:

Del Rio’s son is an all-state quarterback in Florida. Tebowesque? — who actually is coached in high school by the guy who coached Tebow in Pop Warner. I talked to the coach, and he told me Del Rio’s kid may be the best since Tebow — and is more of a prototype QB. It’s just my belief that Del Rio will want to watch his son as a senior, and might take a year off, since he’s getting paid $5 million still by the Jags. And I’m not sure he’ll want to move his son to another state. I could be wrong.

Keep in mind Woody is preaching for promoting in house Richard Smith as our new DC, but interesting info nonetheless.
