New Overtime Rules in the Playoffs

March 23rd, 2010 - 1:58pm by Gray Caldwell

Coming off a postseason that saw two games decided in overtime, NFL team owners approved on Tuesday an overtime rule change in the playoffs.

Starting in the upcoming 2010 season, overtime in the postseason won’t always be “sudden death.” If a team wins the coin toss and drives down the field for a touchdown, the game is still over. But if the team wins the coin toss and then kicks a field goal, the other team gets the ball with a chance to either tie the game with a field goal or win it with a touchdown.

If the game is tied after both teams have had a posession, play will continue under the normal “sudden death” rules.

The owners voted 28-4 in favor of the proposal at the NFL Annual Meeting in Orlando, Fla. The Broncos were among the 28 teams that approved the rule change.

“We always talk about situational football with (Head) Coach (Josh) McDaniels, and I’m sure he’ll have us prepared however it turns out,” Renaldo Hill said earlier in the day. “There’s always some new wrinkle that they have in the league each year, and we’ll be prepared.”

I like the rule change, I only wish it would apply to regular season games too.

  2. kgup says:

i think its a good idea to change the overtime rule that way you give the other team action at saving its season.

  3. TheRoyalBeast says:

Wow I wonder who the 4 teams were

The old way made sense and i liked it but it always felt like it was based on who wins the toss and the percentages have show that. It has been increasing because all a team really has to do is get to like the 40 and then kick it. Kickers are so good nowadays, so super return men exist that, the FG becomes a cheap shot. I like this rule, one team will have to assert their dominance and go for the gold instead of the cheap kick because they know the team won’t have a chance to respond. I know the argument is that the teams defense should be able to step up to the challenge, but things arent that cut and dry anymore…

I like the new rule, and I am glad Bowlen agreed and voted in favor of it. History has been made once again….

ps: I also wouldn’t mind it being made for the regular season rules, but I guess, it just makes the playoffs special and more exciting

This will probably never happen but lets just say:
A team wins the coin toss, elects to kick, the other team goes 3 and out and punts. Then the team receives the punt gets in field goal range and takes the 3 points. What happens then? Does the other team still get another chance to tie the game even though they had a fair chance at the begginning of OT?
Like I said it would probably never happen, but what if?

  5. kgup says:

So whats up with the force out rule the need to bring that rule back since the are changing rules cause i seen alot of close games that were loss due to no force out rule anymore

  6. Deify_you says:

I think then the team that scores wins, the other team had an opportunity to score and didn’t.

  7. brian_schneider –

Like deify said, I believe that as long as both teams have had a posession, a field goal can win the game.

So it’s the same as if the team that wins the coin toss elects to receive, then goes three-and-out, and the other team drives down the field for a field goal. That would end the game.

  8. brian_schneider says:

Ok, thanks for the clearification. I’m pretty sure 10 out of 10 teams elect to receive in OT anyway. LOL!!

I do like this rule change. They should make a change to where if they implement a rule that is good for the league, they whould be required to rid a stupid rule that they implemented prior. Like they changed this OT playoff rule which is cool, now they should be required to get rid of the Brady “knee” rule.

I think the force out rule is a bunch of crock. It is totally subjective to say that “he would’ve come down in bounds” heck he may have not secured the ball and caught it anyway and they’d still call the force out rule. That was one rule I was happy to see go.

I saw a couple of ideas that I liked for overtime. One was like a divide-and-choose method, where the team who won the toss would pick where the possession started and the other team would pick which team got the possession. Another idea was for both teams to “bid” for first possession, with the team who was willing to start closest to their own goal line getting the first possession. Both would function under sudden death rules.

  10. oldsouthstander says:

While I thinks the new playoff only OT rule is ridiculous, I have one simple question for the “geniuses” that voted for this rule: If it’s so important that both teams get a shot at scoring (unless a TD is scored) in the playoffs, why isn’t it just as important in a regular season OT game? It just bobbles my mind. It makes as much sense as the AL having the DH and the NL not. GGGGGGAAAAAAHHHHHHH!!!!!!!

  11. florio's_mom says:

    How exciting!

  12. florio's_mom says:

So if team “A” kicks a field goal and then team “B” gets the ball and throws an interception to team “A” the game is over correct?

  13. florio's_mom says:

And if team “A” has the ball and is sacked for a safety team “B” wins

  14. florio's_mom says:

    ALso,

Team “A” can have an onside kick and kick a field goal to win. With no TD’s involved.

  15. BeastFromEast92 says:

oss I agree,if they are going to change it,they ought to use it in regular season too,so teams are familiar with it.IMO….I would’ve voted no.

  16. florio's_mom says:

That also means Team “A” could kick a field goal and instead of kicking off, onside kicks it and automatically wins the game.

  17. sndvl says:

May as well call it the Favre rule…
which boggles my mind that Minnesota was one of the teams to vote against it (along with Cincy, Buffalo and Baltimore).
Well, if they can get an OT change voted in, shouldnt be long before they get a new CBA, right?

  18. florio's_mom says:

    @sndvl

let’s hope it works out that way.

  19. sndvl says:

    Florio

they have made it clear what their priorities are…

  20. florio's_mom says:

So are you for or against this?

  21. rayjr26 says:

i dont have a prob with this rule change but i agree it should be for the whole season not just playoffs. course i had no problems with the sudden death rule that has been used since like the beginning of time but what ever works! just fix the CBA problem…. PLEASE!!!!!

  22. TheRoyalBeast says:

lmao, thx for all t he unlikely scenarios u have put forth lol. I beleive they are all corect except for the onside…as a result of the onside, it means the team never got an offensive possesion so after the field goal, the receiving team that lost the onside, will get another shot at an offensive possesion.

But what if the team kicks another onside and gets the ball again… unbelievably unlikely but that would be hilarious lol…not unless unsides will be banned in OT lol

  23. sndvl says:

I really have no opinion about this rule change. It only affects playoff games. And if McD has his way, we wont be seeing them for a couple of years anyway…

  24. sndvl says:

I hope I am completely wrong about that last statement…

    GO BRONCOS 2K10!!!!!!!!!!

  25. 1OregonBronco says:

Whats wrong with the Kansas Plan used in college football? Why not in Pro Football.
I still think that is the best plan out there bar none!

  26. footballMANIAC says:

From what McDaniels said in the AFC coach’s breakfast interview, it sounds like they’re planning on moving Haggan inside and Ayers into the starting OLB position. I also found it interesting that when asked about the draft, the first position he mentioned was tackles. I doubt it means anything, but it’s interesting nevertheless.

  27. BroncoBoyEst199 says:

the royal beast and brian schnieder those are two cool dudes

  28. BeastFromEast92 says:

Ayers was drafted to play OLB.I hope he does start,he has great potential, and was starting to come on last year,he needs to start earning that 5 mil he will get this year,Haggan is 260 lbs, good size for ILB,Ayers has better speed at OLB than Haggan anyway. With the Dline expected to be better next season, maybe we will have a double threat on both ends with Doom on one side and Ayers on the other, with DJ and Haggan plugging up the middle.I thought Larsen was expected to compete for ILB???

  29. TheRoyalBeast says:

Sounds like he has plans for Jarvis Moss as well. Happy to hear that, he has had a lot of setbacks but I am praying we can still salvage that first pick we invested in him. Give him time, the 3-4 is where he will succeed, if not as a starter at least as a very reliable rotational player

Since he has said what he has about Haggan and like many suspected…I guess we can all just about mark out McClain. Which is fine since we have many areas to address and seem to be gunning for a RB in the second round, Gehart, McCluster…who knows, we have worked them both out. But if we were going for a faster back I would prefer best over McCluster.

  30. DrunkenBronc says:

Footballmaniac I read that interview also. Mcd didn’t seem happy that dj wasn’t there. Also said center wasn’t a priority?? That they weren’t concentrating on that position right now. Lol assss backwards. Harris and clady are about the 2 best at their position and he’s throwing “tackles” out there

  31. TheRoyalBeast says:

Thank you Broncoboy, I’D like to believe i was lol. Is it that time of the month again for ur monthy driveby through the blogs? lol j/k

  32. TheRoyalBeast says:

    Well DB

McD also said theres a chance marshall might be a bronco next year and said some other good things…in McD double talk…he means the exact opposite lol

  33. DrunkenBronc says:

Pretty sad when you have to go 2 straight years using high picks for the same position. I don’t think draft a rb until at least the 3rd.

  34. DrunkenBronc says:

Ya royal there were some positives in the interview. Martindale for example. But mcd also said other recievers have to step up in case marsh is gone. Can’t handle the thought of marsh on another team!

  35. BeastFromEast92 says:

DB I heard that,he was talking Tackles,Hell we got the 2 best Bookend Tackles with Clady and Harris in the League. We need a Center, and thank God I heard we ain’t gonna sign Mawae,so don’t get the bedpans out yet boys.LOL

  36. TheRoyalBeast says:

    DB

I hear you on that all the way. Blame McD for many things…due to his lack of patience we have been screwed…Case in point

Last year, Address what is needed….We missed out on Both Cushings and Orakpo with his Moreno Draft…

Then traded our first for Alphonso smith a second rounder. when we could have kept it for this year.

Most of our defensive woes woulda been taken care of with Cushings or orakpo or both…and this year we coulda drafted Spiller and Haden a top RB and CB. And then adress OL and everything else in the 2nd round and higher…

Patience is a virtue…It is what it is….

  37. BeastFromEast92 says:

It seems to me McD don’t know who to draft with the 1st pick.I’d be happy with McClain,Williams,or Pouncey, just hope he don’t throw it away.

  38. DrunkenBronc says:

Lol. It is what it is. Who started that motto?

  39. BeastFromEast92 says:

Broncos without the BEAST is a dreadful feeling,McD expects the other WR’s to step up and take his place,sh** wakeup, you can’t take the place of the “BEAST”.

  40. TheRoyalBeast says:

BFE…chances are he will throw it away, not really holding my breath

    DB,

Well, its the only motto to take on in this hair pulling experience under McD…Help us die hard broncos fans get sleep at night…knowing its out of our control and…”It is what it is” lol

  41. BeastFromEast92 says:

    TRB………..LMAO

  42. BeastFromEast92 says:

I think a lot of players are sore at McD for his actions, that’s why they aren’t showing up.

  43. DrunkenBronc says:

Looks like mike bells tender won’t be matched. Good for him and his Philly payday. He derserves that dough. Always liked his running style. For whom the bells toll!!! One a sb winner the other a cell phone store manager. Although Tatum came in and played dam good for being out of football

  44. DrunkenBronc says:

Trb I hear ya on that. Wonder if we see “it is what it is” signs in the stands this year

  45. BeastFromEast92 says:

Mike Bell and Tatum Bell are both good RB’s,we should’ve kept one.

  46. TheRoyalBeast says:

    LOL

I was a big fan of tatum bell, BIG fan…sending him to Detroit ruined him, and it will probably make Jack Williams fade into obscurity. I was more of a tatum fan than a Mike fan. Mike had fumblitis issues. Good for him tho, he got his ring and got out lol.

Still rememebr the year Mike Anderson went over 1000 yards and Tatum had like 987. Mike did all the hard work, but tatum was a home run hitter. Everytime he touched the ball, he took it to the house with such blazing speed. Tatum still did pretty good when he came to help us out after all our RBs got hurt. Feel bad for the way his career spiraled…

  47. TheRoyalBeast says:

PS: Mike Anderson and Tatum Bell, 2005, The original Smash and Dash…Our last great season that took us to the AFC Championship…

  48. BeastFromEast92 says:

I hope McD don’t take a RB in the 1st round like he did last year, there will be good RB’s in 2nd and 3rd and even 4th rounds,I’m concerned about the Center position,McD acts like you can just throw a guy in there and he will produce,he found out the hard way that don’t work when he done it on the Dline last season.

  49. DrunkenBronc says:

Ya that was a 1 2 punch. Tatum would just get huge chunks of yards. That was a great year.

  50. TheRoyalBeast says:

That year, almost everytime, damn near everytime he touched the ball….he took it for 60 yards to the year. Remarkable year….There used to be a youtube video of him during that year but it has logn since been removed, was a great vid.

I agree BFE…But many people want Gehart…if it will cost us a second to get him…I am not interested…McD should suck it up. He already made his premature decision last year and got Moreno…cant spend a second round pick the followign year on another RB when we have glearing needs. I agree there will be other RBs in the later rounds…Especially power Backs.
