Moving On

September 13th, 2010 - 2:55pm by Eric Detweiler

In watching the tape of Sunday’s 24-17 loss at Jacksonville, Head Coach Josh McDaniels pinpointed several positives to build on.

Whether it was Kyle Orton’s five completions of at least 25 yards, the defense holding Pro Bowler Maurice Jones-Drew to less than 100 yards rushing and no touchdowns or Matt Prater’s 54-yard field goal, the Broncos did enough to battle the Jaguars into the game’s closing minute.

As the team looks to correct its opening game mistakes going forward, the head coach believes remaining upbeat about the performance is part of the key to getting better.

“Winning is a result of doing a lot of things right,” McDaniels said. “Yesterday we did some things right. We just didn’t do enough of them right. I think if we understand what we need to improve on, we can do that.”

Last season McDaniels felt the team let the pain of some losses linger through the second half of the season. He hopes the Broncos will be better equipped to handle that adversity in 2010.

That process started today at Dove Valley. McDaniels said the Broncos would work on fixing mistakes from the loss at Jacksonville’s EverBank Field before launching into preparations for the home opener Sunday against Seattle.

On Sunday, Orton said the matchup with the Seahawks — who started their season with a convincing home win against San Francisco –  will be a great test to show his team has grown since 2009.

The quarterback said that chance to get back on track at home should give the team confidence. They’ve won 10 straight home openers — the league’s longest current streak.

“We’re coming back home,” Orton said. “We’ve got to establish home dominance and it’s a great chance for us this weekend.”

McDaniels said his message to the team has been to keep perspective on the loss. With 15 games left on the schedule, there’s still a lot of time to carve out this season’s legacy.

With a veteran locker room that features seven captains in Orton, Champ Bailey, Brian Dawkins, Daniel Graham, Chris Kuper, D.J. Williams and Wesley Woodyard, McDaniels expressed confidence his team will be ready to push forward and bounce back this week.

Even at 0-1 on the young season, McDaniels said there are still plenty of reasons to feel good about the future.

“We did discuss handling adversity and understanding that not everything is going to be perfect all year long,” McDaniels said. “What matters is how we play and how effectively do the things we want to try to do to win. If we can do better, then I think we’ll get the result we’re looking for.”

One more half of football to go, three games yesterday and two today, all pretty good games, ours wchich was competitive to the end, then I watched the Rams Cardinals one where the Cards won it at the end, then the great game at Washington where Dallas blew everything down the stretch to lose it on a holding penalty on a TD with no time left, haha, then ferocious defensive battle between the Jets and Ravens, now KC kicking some SD tail, good football week-end.

  2. baylinorcrush says:

Yeah and they lost to the Colts I believe.

  3. BroncoAussie says:

Yeah the Colts did beat them, love me some Rex Grossman haha, but was that the same year, I think it might have been.

  4. O&BinCostaRica says:

Very surprising football week-end too. I never thought Dallas would lose scoring ONLY 7 points. Never thought Orton would make so many dumb mistakes after what I saw in preseason and never thought the Cheifs would be beating the chargers like this. But I guess that’s why it is the best sport on Earth.

    Phillys needs a henkie.

    Ooooohhhh, Rivers is mad, priceless!

The Chargers ST are stinking it up tonight.

well, how bout them chiefs. figures the first year chargers LOOK to be on the fall. so do we.

I believe in orton. If I want a qb that can do something in a bad o-line I would much rather have m.vick . In a bad o-line anyone will trow int, we need harris in the line. Kampman would had not got all those sack. That is just my opinion. How would you feel if you did a good job and everyone feels it’s still your fualt, while everyone else did not do their job. But be in orton shoes don’t just bring him down like that. Peyton manning lost in a game that he had more 400 yard passing was it his fualt?

the chargers lost to the kc because of ST do you feel they can’t bounce back from this. If mcd puts tebow in there I will just keep it up with my fantasy league. I feel orton will give us 4000 yards or more this season but with the things going on in ST teams and defense it wil be over shadow because of all those other thing that need to get fixed. Maybe what bothers me is I’ve been in orton shoes and that is wrong. He has no runnig game to rely on. Bucky fumble the ball that was huge in drive that orton had alot to do on. But the game is over nothing else we can do about it I guess the better team won!!! 0-2 here we come.

60 MINUTES OF FOOTBALL GO BRONCOS!!!

Broncos have seahawks, colts, titans, ravens, jets coming up on the schedule…. what was those predictions again?

We lost to the Bears in 07 Bay. That was the year after they went to the superbowl. That game was painful to watch! Not only because of kicking the ball to Devin Hester, but it also pretty much knocked us out of any chance at the playoffs that year.

We better find an answer for ST or it will be a long season. At this point I see that being our biggest issue (kickoff and punt coverage). With KC twice and their return game I saw last night, we are in trouble if this aspect of our game isn’t improved on immediately!!

  14. rebelbronco says:

I have faith that we can imptove upon the positives of the Jags game, and learn from our mistakes. However, the youth of this team at so many positions has my faith a little shaky, wait very shaky!! If we don’t beat Seattle at home, we are in big trouble. Restore confidence in my faith boys!! You to McNUtt head. Quit yealling at the players like they are children! BTW you only needed three yards for a first and goal on 4th down, and then you get three more chances to score!!!

  15. baylinorcrush says:

    Thanks for the correction rebel.

Ravens are predicated by many to go to the Super Bowl. They look really good last night night.

I picked both home Teams to win last night and Chiefs came thru. As I posted sometime after the draft, Chiefs aquired some talented players. Quite a few contributed to their win last night. McCluskey from Ole Miss had a nice return. Crennel’s defense came up with a big stop at the end.

They’re 2-0 vs division rivals including our season ending loss to them last year.

We actually don’t play a division rival this year until week #7. (Raiders).

What was really disappointing was that McD had the perfect opportunity to use Tebow and didn’t. On 4th and 3, when the Broncos could have gained 3 yards and gotten four more shots at the end zone, they had the perfect weapon–a qb who could have run, passed or pitched the ball–and has four years of training and demonstrated ability to read defenses and pick the correct option. There’s a reason he holds the SEC TD record, the Heisman, and was 90% successful when needing short yardage for a first down or touchdown. Come on, McD, when you have a 245 pound qb, who is a power back and can also throw, and you need three yards in the red zone. play him! Throwing an out into the end zone is a high risk option, and was totally unnecessary. Gaffney made a miraculous catch (one hand) on a poorly thrown pass, and couldn’t stay inbounds. I’ve seen Tebow convert plenty of those short yardage plays, some with a shovel pass, others running up the middle, and still others running off tackle. If you spread the defense, he will find a way to get your three yards!

maybe weis will take brady quinn in KC cuz Cassel looks like complete butt lol. But then again so does brady quinn. speaking of quinn, we already knew who got the better end of the deal and hillis put in work for the browns. altho he did fumble twice which is not very hillis like. Would still take him over quinn but then McD prolly didnt know he would get tebow and prolly thought he was sooooooooo amazing, he could revive BQs career. So much for that. So we are out a powerback on a team that runs the power O and that always has injured RBs dating back to before McDaniels time. Efficiency is my biggest gripe with McD. Doesn’t use picks efficiently, personnel efficiently, etc. But its not just him i suppose, its the whole front office. Looking forward to seattle game. Hopefully we can pulll of a win. we are not THAT bad. TRB out….

ps: how crazy is this, everyone in the AFC west has a loss. EXCEPT THE CHEIFS. HAHAHAHAHA

I seem to remember a lot of trash talk coming from the Jets. A word from the wise, make sure you can convert a first down and stop the other team from converting them BEFORE you talk about how awesome you are.

  20. 1nOnlyTRB says:

yea they were talking alot of smack, which was why ray ray was fired up lol. I freaking hate the jets, they have been over hyped, revis has been over hyped, and now they are feeling themselves WAAAAAAAAAAAAAY to much. Thats what they get…..

  21. May25 says:

Bronco.man – Tebow proved unsuccessful earlier in the game. That’s why he didn’t go back in. Anything he “showed” in preseason was against second and third string players. He is NOT ready for the speed of starters.

As for OC saying after a 0-2 start he’ll start calling for Tebow to start…do you really want to ruin ANY chance we have of winning those games? We won several games that we were supposed to last year. Orton is doing great, and will do even better when we have a healthy O-line (please please please come back soon Harris). Leave Tebow along and let him develop properly and then MAYBE he’ll be a good NFL QB later. Plenty of great College QBs have gone on to to completely fail in the NFL. Just because he was good with a good team doesn’t mean he’s ready to be good in the NFL

  22. rebelbronco says:

Bronco.man, I have to agree that Tebow might have been a good answer on the 4th and 3, however, I also have to agree with May25. Tebow went in twice and didn’t get but one yard on his bread and butter play from college, and down close to the end zone that field is even smaller for him to manuver. Also, it was Loyd, not Gaffney that made the catch out of bounds. We will be good with Orton. Teboe needs musch more grooming before he is ready.
