THE SHOW MUST GO ON
Even though the Broncos fell just short of the postseason, it’s still playoff time in the NFL, and that means that players, coaches and fans are excited.
The Broncos’ excitement is certainly tempered, by Brandon Stokley said he can’t help but to watch some of this weekend’s matchups.
“I am a football fan,” he said. “I love football. I love watching the playoffs. I will be cheering for Indy.”
Stokley used to play for the Indianapolis Colts, and it doesn’t hurt that they’re going up against the San Diego Chargers.
Jay Cutler, on the other hand, said his TV won’t be tuned in to any playoff football.
“I won’t watch them,” he said. “No interest in it.”
RUNNING BACK BY COMMITTEE
This season, the Broncos saw as many as seven different running backs start a game. That’s an absurd amount for any team, but the Broncos continued to find ways to get some production on the ground week-in and week-out.
“I think it’s hard for backs to get a rhythm if they’re not in there every week and taking all the reps every week,” Chris Kuper said. “I think those guys did a great job, though, coming in.”
The team ranked No. 12 in the league in rushing offense with just over 116 yards per contest.
With so many talented backs emerging and then getting injured for Denver this season, the Broncos will have some tough decisions to make come the start of the 2009 campaign.
Ryan Harris for one didn’t know which way the coaches would go, and joked about his odds of picking the right answer when asked to choose who would be next year’s starter.
“I don’t know, you’ve got a one-in-12 chance, right?” he said with a laugh. “Take those odds if you want, but I’m not picking anything.”
DRAFT STATUS
It looks like Denver’s draft position is all set — No. 12.
The Broncos were one of five teams to end the regular season at 8-8. One of the five — San Diego — is eliminated from the conversation because the Chargers are in the playoffs. That leaves the Broncos, Houston Texans, New Orleans Saints and Washington Redskins all tied for the same draft spot.
The tiebreaker formula is all about strength of schedule — the team with the easiest strength of schedule in terms of opponent records gets the earlier draft pick. Out of the four, the Broncos (117-139) played the easiest schedule, and therefore will draft in the No. 12 position. The Redskins will draft 13th, the Saints 14th and the Texans 15th. The Chargers’ draft position will be determined by their results in the post season.
Denver has had some recent success with the No. 12 pick — Ryan Clady was picked in that spot in the 2008 NFL Draft, and he went on to start all 16 games at left tackle, only allowing a half a sack all season.
SIX FUTURE CONTRACTS
The Broncos on Monday signed six players to future contracts.
Defensive tackle Matthias Askew, guard Mitch Erickson, wide receiver Jayson Foster, defensive tackle Ryan McBean, cornerback Rashod Moulton and wide receiver Matt Willis officially will be added to Denver’s roster at the conclusion of the 2008 NFL season in February. All six players finished the year on the Broncos’ practice squad.

WE REALLY SUCK!!!!!!
I Think Hillis, Torain and Alridge Should Be Back Next Season and Maybe Keep Bell On The Practice Squad.
Well Broncos fans…..Its all over. Disappointing huh? I must say that Im not surprised that the outcome was the way it was. Even more surprising is that coach Shanahan does not want to bring in a new defensive coordinater. With the strides that we made on offense this year, we could be very dangerous if we had a defense at all. Its just inexcusible! I still love this team as much as any one but in all reality we need a huge change on D. Welcome to the offseason folks.
I agree that improving the Defense has to be the Broncos focus this off-season, whether it be through the draft or free agent signings. We have the number 2 Offense. Even with a middle of the pack Defense we would be in firm grasp of a playoff spot. If the Defense could get into the the top quarter of the League, we could be a Superbowl contender. Go Broncos!
Yeah i agree we need to find us some defensive players. our offense is bad ass it just hard to win a game when our defense cant hold the other team….DEFENSIVE TACKLES!!!!!! we need presure on that opposing QB.
IT WAS A TEAM LOSS! NOT JUST D!
GO AVALANCHE ! ! !
Hopefully the Broncos are able to get Haynesworth or Peppers. Brian Dawkins is also a free agent. I don’t know if the Broncos could afford it or not, but it would be awesome if they signed Peppers and Dawkins. Our defense, I would think, would be so much better and we would still have the draft to hopefully improve the defense even more. Well I can dream anyways.
Man, you guys are chipper. Keep your head up. We have a lot to look forward to in the future.
USC has a whole host of defensive players available. We desperately need two defensivw tackles and a middle linebacker.
the only way to improve is to cut the cancer off the team meaning good bye to shanahan good bye to bly and bailey’s. bring in a coach that can fire up the team and make them play. get in their asses and chew them out and show them what its like to win. after half we come out and looked stoned. keep putting the heat on. shanahan has lost total controll of this team. no coaching at all.
Such a disappointing loss…… giving up 52 on your final game is not a good ending.
but looking forward I feel that the #12 spot can do us some good in the draft again.
I feel that some of our returning backs next season should be Hillis, Torain, Pope, and either Pittman or Bell. Yes, i said Tatum Bell. That guy did great last night!
Recievers will be Marshall, Royal, Stokely, Chad Jackson, and some new guy. I don’t believe D-Jack will be with us again.
The rest of the offense seems to be in place with the exception of a few TE’s. Jeb and Nate are gonna be a toss up.
Now to the troubled defense…… There is no doubt that our first pick and probably many picks will be for our defense. I believe we need a much better pass rush. A good pass rush takes away from other teams running games too.
Dumervil and Ekuban should stay. Engleberger can go. I really would like to see a big improvement out of Jarvis Moss next season. And Marcus Thomas will continue to grow.
D.J. Williams, Nate Webster, Wesley Woodyard, and Jamie Winborn all deserve roster spots next year. Winborn lead our team in tackles this season!
Champ and Dre are good. It was sort of a rough season for Dre though, next year will be better. Josh Bell does have a bright future and hopefully Jack Williams does too……
Josh Barrett was a solid fill in late in the season. He will be back!
And last, the special teams……. OOOOOH HOW DISAPPOINTING IS MATT PRATER????!!!!! Wow we need a good kicker desperately.
Brett Kern did a good job for a rookie and he will be around for a while.
Thats my take, sorry for the novel. PLAYOFFS IN 09!
how bout we leave our team alone let them develop as a team and make minor adjustments such as how bout a vocal D leader for the mike LB spot or a tackling coach i mean we had all the pieces to be up there with the best we just did it every once in a while look at how many teams could stop Turner this year yes we did or favre/Jones yea we took care of them i mean look at the better parts of this year and look for them to be more consistant. im sure all of us can agree our Offense is set maybe another WR or a RB that never gets hurt for a back up JUST IN CASE. All im saying is dont say we need a better team or this team sucks no this teams young and needs leadership and we need some1 like Al Wilson was.
and Shanahan DONT PUT HILLIS OUT FOR A TRADE like we do with every good back we develop
“Moving Forward” is another way of say “We stuffed up big time, but lets not dwell on that” politicians and their spin doctors do it all the time.
The team lost, and they bare the brunt of all the critisim regardless of what Shanny or JS say!! But I do beleive heas need to role for a lack of variety and innovation in the play calling either on defence and offence.
Whats the point of taking all those photos pre & post snap when you continue to run the sam plays.. prehaps the Old Dog is running out of tricks…
All the best to those that played on the field, and hope the new year washes away the memory.. I feel sorry for you guys.
BRONCOS!!!!
well its over till next year cant say it wasn’t a hell of a ride!!! we need alot of help of help on the D side but just as important we need to work on the SPECIAL TEAMS!!. Did we run a kickoff or a punt back this year? I know we were in the bottom third in opposing starting position this year. The hidden yards in special teams is what we gotta capture. We also need a leader in the middle somebody who the opposing offense has to account for on every play and to take the pressure of the the secondary and let them do what the get paid to do cover receivers!!. The only thing im upset about is our terrible tackling The entire defense needs to learn to wrap up! I agree wit you cdubb28 we gotta pressure the QB maybe we can get some turnovers next year. I know this season hurts cause our expectations got raised wit such a fast start but just
remember the 96-97 season when we were the best team and got knocked out
in the div rd by the jags 30-27,we did ok the next couple of years if i remember right keep your heads up and………..
GO BRONCOS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
can some one tell me again why we cut out the heart of our d? wilson, gold and lynch??
Boss is the black sheep in this case with dj woodyard and winborn i think webster will go and spencer will be a real line backer next year maybe we could trade Boss for a good pass rusher Robert Mathis, Ty warren , Maybe with some picks maybe john abraham
to me they dont deserve an offseason. they need to be hitting each other until they learn to tackle with great success. also get marshall out there learning to catch a baseball bare handed at 90mph. that will help his catching abilty or should lol. also lets start practicing like we mean it. and get shanny out of here im tired of hearing WE DIDNT GET IT DONE. WELL u didnt get it done were done with u. SPEND MONEY BRING IN KEY PLAYERS.
i get a kick out of the oh better luck next year attitude. i have been a broncos fan through thick and thin, and i think its about time, our fans got a firm grip on the situation. We were beat by every afc west team this year! we have lost more games at home this year, then we have in god knows how long, and we have the worst defense and special teams in the NFL to boot! we set an nfl record for being loosers in the last three games of the season. And not just broke a record, WE MADE the RECORD! The first team ever, to lose the way we did! I understand we have to be fans, but maybe one playoff win since ELWAY, should be enough for some fans to lash out and stop filling up stands for a bunch of players that dont seem to care. ANY other TEAM in NFL history would have fired shanahan Years ago with his record in the last 11 years! Face it, AS fans we need to get together and give some tough love to this team! i read these blogs all the time, and i know i am not the only one to feel we need a change. When Pat bowlen sees the lack of support this team should have by now, maybe we all wont have to bitch anymore, and he will make some long overdue changes! HOW LONG CAN YOU BEAT A DEAD DOG GUYS! there is to much wrong to look like a team even in the next five years. what does everyone think we are going to do? Fire everyone, fill and entire deffense that sucks, and find a running back that has at least one nut! We dont have the cap, time or ability to rebuild, and we are stuck trying to make these guys look good! i would love to see them go somewhere, and ill keep cheering, but i will be the first to say, i am done going to games, buying things, and showing i am fan, because i think the constant support is giving them a big head, and 52 to 21 is enough to show they dont need anymore of a big head! Go NUGGETS!
GOODNESS WAT THE HECK! WE GOT CRRRRRUUUUUUSSSSSSHHHHHEEEEEEDDDDDDDDDDD! OUR DEFENSE IS TO BLAME! I hope we hire a GM and not have mike make some of the personnel choices, cause its not paying out! WE NEED BIG DEFENSE LINEMEN! our defense got push around like the dummies they play with in practice! please Broncos give the fans sumthing to cheer from! this Off season WE R WATCHING EVERYTHING U DO!
It’s no surprise none of the players — other than Stokely — seem to have an interest in the playoffs, they didn’t have an interest when they could have been the ones playing in the playoffs, why should they now?
i take back the running back with a nut comment! Peyton Hillis is AMAZING! but i am more then sure shanny will trade him for a 7th round center that is better off selling cookies!
I’m With (Broncos4ever80) we do need some Defense Linemen that can break though those lines to get to the QB’s…Hmmmm some D-linemans like BiG o Trevor Pryce but a younger version, he’s one reason why the RAVENS are in the PLAYOFFS…..
But I don’t think we need a GM, We ALSO need to stop dropping passes
GO BRONCOS!!!!!!!!!
monodono: you call it a team loss, but clearly the defense shoulders a larger portion of the blame. When the defense allows SD to score on 6 of 7 possessions, thats absurd. We need to get rid of Nate Webster, the guy can’t pass cover, can’t takle, and gets blocked out of almost every single play. The middle linebacker should lead the team in tackles, thats something I don’t think he can achieve. Aside from that if we had a takle to compliment Thomas, I think we would be in business, without pressure from the front four, that makes the whole secondary vulnerable. As soon as we address those issues we should be a much better team.
If this organization is to move forward, SHANAHAN HAS TO GO. Our record has seem to level off at the 8-8 mark the past three years,(9-7,7-9,8-8) which is not the mark of a team rebuilding but in limbo. Truth is the Broncos are have no idea where they’re going and how to get there. With Mike Shanhan still running the show, you can expect more of the same every year with this team.
Look at what he did just to the defense. 3 years ago Denver was in the top 10 Defense’s. Now we are one the leagues eye sores. Why on Earth would you take Boss Bailey over Ian Gold and take Bly over… well… anyone else. There is a good reason you found these players in Detriot. THEY SUCK.
You can’t rely on one guy to win games espescially if the that guy is Jay Cutler. He doesn’t deserve to be in the pro-bowl. Last year they blamed his poor preformance on a illness, whats the excuse this year?
PATHETIC, PATHETIC, PATHETIC.
Whats even more pathetic is that this team isnt getting better. Next year well have a new D-cordinator again, an unproven or old running back and a defense that cant hold a high school team. Sound Familar? It isnt the D-cordinator thats losing games, its the head coach and until Pat Bowlen and the powers that be see that Shanny is nothing without Elway, this team will continue to fail.
for ppl who r comparing this team to other teams with elway… remember this, it took elway many many many many years to win his super bowl and cutlers numbers early in his career have been better than what elways were. Now dont think im sayingcutler is or ever will b better than elway cause thats not true, but we just need patience. Our D just needs to b built from the front 7. WE need to work hard to pick up Albert Haynseworth( aka Hayneswall) and we either need to find a new MLB or move DJ back cause webster just cant get it done. Woodyard has to b on the field beuase he makes plays and by god get a safety to play with barret, with a veterans help he will b a great player. If we can get a healthy boss along with dj and woodyard, our linebackers will b set. Get some D lineman and a safety and just get ready for training camp
Arron Curry is “exactly” who we need to draft.
Fire Shanahan!!!!! (jonny7) I can’t believe you said that, I guess it’s was Coach that Dropped those Two TD’s Passes against the BILLS that would of Saved are Season, and Passes & TD pass in SD….
Yea some plays that we ran was dum and really didn’t help us out that much, and we should of stick with the long Passes and running plays, I believe that’s what are O-Line is built for.
So yea Don’t its not the coach fault…
Always Remember “We WIN AS A TEAM AND WE LOSE AS A TEAM” there shouldn’t be no pointing fingers.
GO BRONCOS!!!!!!!
quick few comments…. first of all, to all of you that would like to think that jay is even kind of the problem…SHUT UP!! when we had a running game all you doubters were swingin on his nuts! the last 3 games we SUCKED BIG TIME! but how many running attempts did we have verses pass? we were a one dimensional offense, and that makes things really easy on opposing defenses. what we need is a monster interior lineman, a mean ass middle linebacker, and a solid, hard hitting safety! I say shanny gets one more season, if we miss the playoffs again, he needs to move on, so that the organization can do the same!
here’s to next year…. again!
ps.. whats the deal with prater??? i dont imagine we will be seeing much of him after this season.
GO BRONCOS
Such a MAJOR dissapointment to end our season that we had such high hopes for……… Let me just say that I have been watching every move that this orginazation has made with personel trades, acquisitions, draft picks, etc, etc… and if I have to hear the “we just couldn’t get it done.” One more time from Shanny I think I am going to shoot myself!! i mean seriously guys & gals, enough is enough! We have to make it well known that we are sicj and tired of the lack of effort, undisciplined play and the same apethetic attitudes week in and week out from our players.
on the other hand, I am excited about or offense if we can just catch the F____ ball once in a while we would be ok!! Oud Defense needs to be shaken up big time. I agree that we need to bring in a MLB that can fire up this defense and can make plays!!!! Special teams needs to be able to return a punt or kick off past the 25 Yd line and we need to get back to the fundamental basics of learning how to TACKLE!!!!!!!!! For heaven’s sake fans, when is enuff enough???? I have been a HUGE supporter of Shanahan throughout the last 14 years, but a change must be made… With our #2 offense, a re-vamped and emotionally dedicated defense and a special teams that is “special” We will not only be back in the playoffs again, but we will get back to the BIG dance as well. Then no one will EVER say again that we caouldn’t do it without John. We need to recognize that there is a lot of Rookie and veteran talent on this club… Let’s tap into what we are capable of and take back the West and the Lobardi Trophy- It belongs to US….. The loyal Denver Bronco Fans & Players!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Go Orange & Blue 2009!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
First off, to the morons calling for Shanny to go:
#2 offense in the league. Who is going to give us that? Why throw a wrench into Jay’s learning curve when he is right there where he needs to be and is comfortable with the system?
Shanny DOES know how to draft: See Peyton, Eddie, Clady, etc……
Now to the defense:
Nobody is safe. Anyone notice how we played better when we had Champ, and all of our starting LB’s injured? Just going to throw out some names here:
Haynesworth, Vilma, Ray Lewis, Asumouagh (or however you spell his name)
Sure Ray is 75yrs old, but he is a LEADER. Someone to whip our defense in to shape and provide some kind of consistent tackling from our LB’s. Draft a young corner/safety and some D-linemen. I think Dre and Champ are good enough, but they ain’t getting any younger.
Bizkidd and rayjr26 tell me how is it Shanahan fault we are losing?
Did anyone see Jay-C and Rivers shake hands at the end of the game???? How pathetic was that?? These two guys absolutely hate eachother… No question about it!! This is going to develop into an even greater rivalry in the AFC West Division. I am so excited to see how next season starts to shape up with the players we can acquire and develop into our “system”….
Please draft a couple Def. Tackles and a KEEP PEYTON HILLIS!!!! He Looks like the next Mike Alstott… Wow!!!!!! Bob Slowik must go!!!!!!!!!!
See you guys at the Pro Bowl!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hiring another defensive coordinator dosent make sense for you people saying we should. The more you put in new people the more they wanna change the schemes and plays which puts the D at risk, look what happened the past years. Keep the coordinator and give him another year so players have the same scheme. But we do need some new players. Free agents i would go after Albert haynesworth as the first option, if he isnt there then maybe go after some of the big name defensive agents that are going to be out there. Draft wise i really hope the team Drafts Taylor Mays S from USC, i think hes going to be one of the big name safeties in the league in the future like an ed reed or a troy polamulu, great speed and great tackling, thats who i think we should go after in the first round if hes still available by the 12th pick.
And also those saying we should fire shanahan, your obviousely on something and speaking on impulse because of this season.theyd be crazy to fire shanahan.
GOOD UPSIDE FOR NEXT SEASON!!!!!!!
GO BRONCOS!!!!!!!
510snoopy510 I’ll tell you how:
Dre Bly- Gigantic salary eating up cap space
Boss- Ditto
Champ- Ditto
ZERO Defensive line presence
McCree/Manuel- idiotic signings.
THAT stuff is Shanny’s fault. Not something you FIRE him for, but it is his fault and he needs to fix it. He built this Defense to beat Indy, the problem is that Indy and the “pass happy” offenses ain’t the only offenses out there. We have all this speed and pass rush D-linemen, but not a SINGLE run stopper.
The man is a great coach & leader no doubt about it (HOF)… it seems as though He has lost the magic touch he once had… we have won (1) playoff game since 1999. we have to start looking into the leadership staff as being accountable here as well as our players. I am not saying that Shanahan must go but what I do know is we need changes and we need them fast. We should have been in the SB in 2005. We were the #2 seed in the AFC and got beat by Pittsburgh at home and they were a wild card road playoff team that we were favored to beat! I just get tired of the same old season ending statements like: “We’ve made gre strides” or “we’ll just work on continuing to get better” or “we fell short” or “we just couldn’t get it done”…. that’s enough!!!!!! Everyone needs to be accountable, NO MORE EXCUSES!! That means even the coaches….. let’s recognize where we need help and fix it before we have another mediocre season and miss the playoffs again……..I just can’t take it anymore!!!!!!
GO BRONCOS!!!!!!!!!!
one playoff win in eleven years, enough said! FIRE SHANNY WORMY
Just draft Curry !!!!
We need a cornerstone on defense.
But you have to wonder if the Mike Shanahan era is losing the magic. I dont know but it sure is disappointing to have 3 mediocre seasons. This team has a horrible d-fense – thats why we are 8-8. Jay Cutler is a franchise QB and in all fairness to him, he has no chance to succeed when he has to score every drive. The pressure on him must be umbearible. The O-line was simply exceptional! Good Work boys! I can’t say enough about our WRs. Marshall had another career season and Royal was electric. Stokely was solid as ever and the TEs were fairly productive. RBs…wow! We need to figure out how to lift the curse on the RBs health.
Young-had a very unfortunate and un-productive season.
Hall-played terribly at times with all the fumbles.
Pittman-ran hard but is just to old to stay healthy.
Torain-Looked promising and I would like to see him have a solid year next year.
Hillis-brought an element of toughness that we needed and moved the ball with a punishing running style that could wear down the opposing D.
Alridge-deserves a shot next year. “Quik Six” could be a home run threat.
Bell-is trying to prove himself so he played hard and was fairly effective at times.
Pope-was ok but is very expendible.
Boyd-? he looked good in college but who knows.
Defense….oooo where do I start? Thats what the coaching staff needs to decide. I love Champ but he did not have a good year (i know he was injured). Bly and the rest of the secondary was ….really bad to say the least. But when the DC tells you to play 10 yards off i guess its tough. The LBs were horrible at tackling all year (Madden said that all night on the broadcast). D-line was a problem. No pressure,no penetration at all. Jarvis Moss has been a major bust along with crowder. But Mike said no change was needed! Wow! He must be in major denial. Bottom line, the defense is the laughing stock of the league. We need change on D! There are several good Defensive coaches on the market right now (Crennel,Mangini) I hope we do something.
Well said but I’m afraid we need alot more than that…..
SEE YOU GUYS LATER!!!!!!
Inconsistency and mediocrity were the characteristic of Denver in 2008. and Shanahan does not have the balls to take them another super bowl
hey bolted, atleast we ALL know that NOONE likes rivers! put up the stats he had and not even your piss poor suck ass fans cant get him voted into the pro bowl! ANd you guys call yourselves fans? None of you are worth the toilet paper you wipe yourselves with! win or lose, playoff or not, we dont stop being fans! And as far as rivers, you saw the roughing call on dj williams, its only a matter of time before some one ends little phils winey ass career! we went out with class, and you will go out with the whole NFL hating you and your team! GO INDY!
REEEAAAADDD!!!!!
We need to draft a MLB!!!! But who????
James Laurinaitis from Ohio St…. He is “sick”… Fast, strong, good pass rusher and pass defender, also great against the run… check him out!!!! on youtube or something
The defense it’s not bad at all, there’s good material, but need to play like a team, everyone goes to his own side, and last night, there were more focus to hurt Rivers an company that stop them… That’s it’s no way to tackle!!…
Shanahan it’s a genius, the offense it’s an excellent group to start, just need to CALM DOWN!… focus!… But, still, the team scores, but with each TD the oponent makes 2 TD an 1 FG… just stop them!… don’t try to make interceptions or fumbles, just stop them… there’s a evolving good offense to scores… Still, GO BRONCOS!!!
Guys keep your head up.I know is its Disappointing but if you are a true fan you will understand this season wasn’t meant to. Just be thankful we are not the lion.
I think the league has just caught up to all our schemes on offense. How many of you remember the Texans beating us to the punch last year.Beating us with the very same plays that we made famous.I always thought Ray Lewis was a thug, but maybe thats what we need right now. Some one to light a fire under our guys the way Romo did back in the 90′s
Oh by the way someone needs to light a fire under the fans at Invesco ! I was at the Jags game and the crowd was even more pathatic then our Defense! If you can”t make a little noise to help our boys on defense then give your tickets to someone who will.
goodby shanahan you have not done a thing for the broncos in many years they just keep getting worst.
We should keep Shanahan at least one more year and if things don’t approve then we should think about going in a different direction. The Titans had several years where they were awful and there records were much worse than the Broncos. They kept Jeff Fisher and now look at the Titans.
Hey Donkie WHO MADE THE PRO BOWL!? Phyliis River NO! srry u guys will lose against Colts easly! so, have your fun with it cause WE WILL CUM BACK STRONG NEXT YEAR!
Next years schedule is ridiculously difficult. We are going to need a GREAT defense to have a shot at the playoffs.
And all of you dumb retards yelling out to fire Shanahan have gotta be losin your minds. This guy is an offensive genius. We didn’t lose because of him. We lost because of so many injuries and youth. And Slowik is going to be returning which is actually a good thing. We keep throwing out D.Coordinators every year and its not helping us.
We need to get a set defensive system and bring in a couple good players and then we will get better. The draft must go good again this year. We are lucky to have pick 12 again. Get Laurinaitus! Or the safety Mays from USC! Those are 2 people we could really use.
