Miller Named Defensive Player of the Week

November 23rd, 2011 - 9:33am by Max Henson

Von Miller put forth his best all-around performance to date last Thursday against the Jets and the NFL took notice.

After recording a career-high 10 tackles, 3.5 stops for loss and 1.5 sacks in the 17-13 win vs. the Jets, the Broncos rookie linebacker has been named AFC Defensive Player of the Week.

Miller — the No. 2 overall selection in the 2011 NFL Draft -– is the first Bronco to win the award since cornerback Champ Bailey was honored in 2009. He’s also the first rookie to win the award since Texans linebacker Brian Cushing in 2009.

Miller has been wreaking havoc in pass-rush situations all season and currently leads all rookies in sacks with his team-leading 9.5. He has also tallied 14 tackles for loss and 48 total tackles.

Not just rookie defensive player of the week mind you!

  3. OrangeTsunami says:

Love this kid!!! The Bronco brass really nailed it on this one!!! I guess Von is our consolation prize for enduring the McD’s era…

  4. eternalorangeandblue says:

I agree this kid is dynamite and we hit a home run with him. He will be a force at LB for a long time

  5. OrangeTsunami says:

I’m not sure about here, but some of the draft boards I was on, most Bronco fans (including myself) were shocked that we didn’t take Dareus at #2, considering our need at DT.. Not that Dareus isn’t a fine player, but he’s not the game changer that Von is.. Also, I think Von is on the field for more snaps throughout the game than Dareus is, and that’s really what we needed – a guy that play A LOT for us on D!!!

Kudos to our FO on this one, let’s keep up the prudent drafting fellas!!!

  6. Bronco_Turtle says:

    haha!! VON is a BEAST!!!

    Nice work 58!!!

What a great pick!! He is awesome!

  8. BeastFromEast92 says:

Congrats to Miller…………….keep on keepin’ on bro!!!!!!
All the way to the Pro Bowl and Defensive ROY!!!!!!!!!

  9. eternalorangeandblue says:

Im glad we are building a winner through the draft and not free agency.

  10. OrangeTsunami says:

    Anyone heard anything on Orton?

    Is the 2pm deadline EST?

  11. killerkod says:

and to think……….this stud is a rookie. Imagine the force he will be as he gets more and more playing time and develops a complete game. He’s gonna be the cornerstone of our D for years to come.

And I also love how he seems like such a nice and easy going guy off the field, but when he’s at work, he’s all business and has a wicked mean streak. He’s out to pop his opponants in the mouth and knock them OUT!

    Congrats Von!

  12. Stuart Zaas says:

    OrangeTsunami: The deadline is 2 p.m. MST / 4 p.m. EST.

  13. theotheredge says:

Have we activated anyone from PS in place of Orton?

  14. Bronco_Turtle says:

So, I was looking at some stats… and every single team in the AFC West has allowed more points than they have scored…

    Ugggh…

  15. OrangeTsunami says:

    Thx Stuart!!!

Let’s hope we can get something done before the deadline.. I’ve heard on local shows here in NY that the Jets could be interested, with the way Sanchez has been playing and b/c their back up is the 41 year old Mark Brunell…

  16. Orange_Crusher says:

Stuart, if Orton is not selected off the waver wire by 2pm and then signs a free agent contract with another team in the next week or two, are the Broncos still responsible for the 2.5mil?

  17. OrangeTsunami says:

But then again, teams might be waiting until he clears waivers, and pick him up on the cheap… Hopefully someone claims him.. My bet is on the Jets

  18. gabeharter says:

58! complete class act! already seeing improvement from game to game and his first game wasnt even close to bad :-)

  19. royalbroncofan1 says:

The kid is now well acclimated with the defensive scheme, his teammates and the NFL!

    Way to go Von!!!!!

  20. Stuart Zaas says:

theotheredge: The team has not announced any additional roster moves, so the current roster stands at 52 players.

  21. killerkod says:

If no one picks him up, he’ll just take his money and ride off into the sunset. No one will sign him as an FA to be a starter and he won’t play if he isn’t the starter so I see a no-brainer there.

I’m guessing he’s hoping he clears waivers and watches NFL games from the comfort of his own living room………

  22. Stuart Zaas says:

Orange_Crusher: The Broncos would be responsible for the balance of his salary if no team claims him. If he then signs with another team, he would be paid the balance of his salary by the Broncos in addition to whatever he signs for with his new team.

A similar situation happened last season when Trevor Pryce was waived by the Ravens and then signed with the Jets.

  23. Orange_Crusher says:

Thanks for clearing that up for me Stuart….

    ILMSDB!!!!

  24. BroncoRoyaltyEst.1979 says:

Congratulations to Von! The kid was an amazing pick up. He’s a selfless guy and everything the Broncos look for as far as a person on and off the field. He deserves the pro bowl. As far as KO, it was reported that as soon as the Cutler went down his agent contacted the Broncos requesting to be put on the wire, as reported by mike and mike; pointing out the DP as the source. Maybe he has an insider on the Bears that was interested. But thats just speculation. Sorry if you guys all ready posted the same I just wanted to chime in i’m on the road and bored using this weak phone to post. Have a great day. ILMSDB! -Royalty

  25. broncos58 says:

Miller has been doing great and he is a cornerstone piece we can build around, but I just want to say how tired I am of Elway not having confidence in Tebow long term. If the Broncos are ignorant enough to get a new qb at the end of the season even though Tim has them winning I don’t know if I’d remain a fan of the Broncos until Elway and Co. were gone. Like skip says “Elway is becoming the Jordan of GMs.

  26. sndvl says:

Keep up the great work #58!

It’s sort of a shame that with all the hype surrounding a certain offensive player, Von’s play is second fiddle…at least this recognition his impact isn’t being completely overshadowed!

Congrats Von Miller. Here’s to many more sacks, awards and other various hardware!

    GO BRONCOS!!!!!

  27. 1nOnlyTRB says:

Kid is a stud. So glad we got him. Already a all pro in my book. Alot to learn but he learns fast and plays faster. Reminds me of Eric Berry from last year. Instand stars. Was. Patrick Peterson guy and PP has been phenomenal this season but glad we ended up with Miller. Wish we coulda had both.

Check out von in the pro bowl ballot, he is like head and shoulders above alot of players so VOTE FOR VON MILLER FOR PRO BOWL. HE DESERVES IT!

  28. broncoduckfan says:

Congrats to Von and the front office. Great choice on the pick! Von is becoming more comfortable each week. The more Dumervil rounds into shape, the better opportunities Von will have as well. I think I’m most impressed with the growth he has shown on the running game. Each game I have watched him, he has made a tackle on the other side of the field, chasing down a runner from behind. Keep up the good work Von!

  29. astrass says:

Ugh! I need to find a Von Miller Orange jersey before I fly up there for the Chicago game!! sold out all over!

  30. ONLYONECHAMP24 says:
