McKinley Released; Two More Signed

September 2nd, 2008 - 4:21pm by Gray Caldwell

The Broncos continued in a busy week of roster moves this afternoon, releasing ninth-year defensive tackle Alvin McKinley. After releasing McKinley trading Domonique Foxworth to Atlanta earlier today, two roster spots were available. The team signed guard Dylan Gandy, who had been with the team through training camp, and defensive tackle Josh Shaw, a sixth -year player who joins the Broncos after spending the 2007 season with Oakland, which released him on Saturday.

McKinley was the Broncos’ most experienced defensive tackle with 42 career starts, including 10 last season with Denver. In his one season with the team, he amassed 28 tackles and 2.5 sacks.

Gandy has played 42 career games (14 starts) in the regular season along with six career playoff games (1 start), including the Colts’ victory in Super Bowl XLI during the 2006 season. In 2007, Gandy saw time in 10 games for Indianapolis and recorded one start at right guard.

Shaw has played in nine career regular-season games and totaled nine tackles and a sack.

    Thanks Gray…

Can you give us a little more info on Josh Shaw? I like his size, but Mckinley wasnt that much older than Shaw, and had much more experience.

What’s his upside? To be put on the 53 man roster, and not the PS makes me wonder? Any thoughts?

I thought a DT might get the axe with the lack of inside push at times during the preseason but signing a guy that has only played in 9 games in 6 years? That seems pretty bizzarre ! At least he won’t be too beat up! Maybe he is one of those guys that the Raiders signed and didn’t like his attitude so they kept him stuck there for 6 years??? Hope he makes the most of his oppurtunity !

  4. broncosapien says:

he probably got picked up because he’s a raider and he might spill some information about the raiders’ defensive scheme’s. n seeing that the broncos are rivals with the faiders it comes as no surprise as to why they picked him up. He’ll most likely be cut after BMarsh comes back. He has no future with the broncos whatsoever. These type of things happen all the time but no one knows about it because they keep it on the low.

broncosapien.. highly logical if this shaw guy is drop off faiders… but still we need some depth at DT..

McKinley’s undisciplined play finally caught up with him. Is anyone surprised that Kenny Peterson and Nic Clemons have outlasted him?

  7. HOGblog says:

It’s not McKinley’s undisciplined play! It’s his big-ass contract with less than mediocre results. Instead of Shaw, what about Shaun Cody out of detroit? He’s got some pedigree.

However, the raiders may have outsmarted themselves w/Shaw. I read on the “Darkside” that there was surprise when Shaw was released, and they retained William Joseph. Then turned around 2 days later and cut Joseph. By then Denver had already signed Shaw. So apparently there’s some more confusion by the bay.

We have to get new DT’s of the pedigree of Gerard Warren/Trevor Pryce. Say what you want, but the Brownco experiment was good for us. We just didnt full appreciate how much talent we got from that group overall. Oh well, I hope Shaw will help. All we need is another PS def tackle.

I know Gandy is a solid player. Any offensive lineman that comes from Indianapolis is a good call because Peyton Manning is one of the more protected signal-callers in the NFL. He’ll fit in nicely. McKinley was expendable and I think this Shaw will make some big plays against Chokeland on Monday. Poetic justice, indeed!

  9. ChampBaileyforMVP says:

But can we win without Brandon Marshall?

  10. pacohlgs78 says:

    Without a doubt we can

  11. dlmyers says:

I agree, Shaw is here until Marshall comes back. Thomas and Clemons improved the most of the DT’s. Robertson and Patterson very solid. I like these DT’s.
Can we beat Oakland without Marshall? Shanahan will plan around the absense. I look for TE domination here. Oakland has very good lb’s and cb’s but no DL. Cutler should have time to play pass and catch.

Eddie Royal can carry the load for one game. I’m expecting a good game from him Monday night.
