After suffering a fractured fourth metacarpal in the team’s Week 7 win against Miami, Willis McGahee is hopeful he can return to action sooner than later.
“It’s doing good, no complaints right about now,” McGahee said of his hand.
In the locker room Monday, he explained how the injury happened.
“It got caught up in the facemask of the DB when we were playing against Miami, and as you can see, I couldn’t get it out because he was behind me,” McGahee said. “When I was trying to get it out, I heard it pop, and then I just had to leave it there until it freed up on its own.”
McGahee said he got fined for the play, which drew a penalty for a facemask.
He plans to appeal the fine.
“Look, I paid the price for it,” he said. “I got an injury on my hand. I had to have surgery. I’m taking it to appeals court now, but it looked like I was really holding onto his facemask all the way down, which I really wasn’t.”
McGahee said he hasn’t held a football since the injury, and he’s taking it day-by-day to see when he will be ready to return to game action.
Head Coach John Fox said it’s still unclear whether McGahee will be back for Sunday’s rematch in Oakland.
“I thought he had a chance (to play) last week, but because of surgery — that speeds up the healing of a broken bone, because it’s artificial healing — you do have an incision, and there is risk of infection and those types of things,” he said. “We feel better about that this week, and he’ll be day-to-day.”
In the mean time, McGahee was disappointed not to have been on the field helping his teammates in Sunday’s loss.
“I missed them,” he said. “We had a rough time this game. Hopefully we can’t turn things around going against Oakland.”

Well said ( imready ) Im just saying I havent seen anyone play as bad as tebow my whole life just saying. I would love for him to come out and beat the dog snot out of the raiders dont get me wrong, but really do you really think thats going to happen lol. I think they should as you said, Orton is gone at the end of the year, quinn is gone at the end of the yr. Play quinn just for audition purposes for trade bait move weber up and let him get some playing time, at the end of the yr draft a pro style qb lots of talent coming out and keep weber number 2 and let tebow grow and learn with the system. One thing about tebow anything the caoches choose he will be happy with that, hes a very good team player, it wasnt him pushing for this at all.
our offensive and defensive line played like sh*t. this is why we couldnt stop their offense or move the ball at all.
A running back does need his hands. You are sorely missed, Mr. McGahee, and best wishes to you for a strong recovery! the way I figure it, when you are asked to take a few snaps directly from the shotgun in practise, that will be a sign to get ready to get back into the game!
when will Elvis Dumervil show up to play..?
DDK…. I am with you, We are way better than how we played, McGahee we miss you and i think it showed the impact you have on our team, Don’t rush back we need you long term!!!
I love my broncos yall its hard for me to face the fact that we are not that good but its true. Bay and Trb I read alot of posts and some people say to much whrn they can just be simple sometimes it works better!!!
Oh yea I dnt like mccoy, he wait to long to call good plays for tebow the whole game john lynch was sayn they need to let tebow take 3 step drops and let it go,quick screen and slants. We didnt score til they let tebow do that. So the hell with Mccoy!!!!!
I am not a fan of McCoy either. His plays don’t work with the style Tebow is comfortable with. Throwing deep passes the whole game didn’t allow him to get into a rhythm. I believe it is as much McCoy’s fault as Tebow’s (if not more) that we played so poorly. Also how about a round of applause for the work of Chris Kuper on Suh. Also Ayers and Bunkely stepping their game up. Let’s go get us some raiders!
Tebow cant mk the 3 step drops his motion is to slow
[...] told the team’s official website he hadn’t held a football since the injury and categorized himself as “day to [...]
Willis, heal well my friend. Right now Lance and Moreno are working out for what the teams need. Let that hand heal 100%. Long term. We will get on track as soon as we get the qb issue resolved. It’s been along time coming for us to have a 100 yard rusher. Get healthy.
i hope u get back soon man we need u and im sure that appeal will be successful he was fined because it looked like he was holding on to the face mask on the way down when really his finger was stuck whats he suppose to do about that? NFL really needs to do a better job at looking at the situations and not just throwing out fines out of no where. seems like if you have a penalty in a game now days in a fine which is bs thats just the NFL trying to steal money away from the players.
