McDaniels Arrives in Denver

January 12th, 2009 - 4:03pm by Adam Zinser

Josh McDaniels, who has agreed to terms with the Broncos to become the next head coach in Denver, has arrived.

He landed at Centennial Airport in Englewood just after 2 p.m. MST and will be arriving at Dove Valley shortly.

His press conference with President and CEO Pat Bowlen is still scheduled for 5:00 p.m. MST, and as mentioned in an earlier blog, we’ll provide full coverage of the afternoon’s events.

Patriots Head Coach Bill Belichick issued a statement earlier today about McDaniels:

“Josh McDaniels is one of the finest people and brightest, most talented coaches I have ever worked with. Since joining us eight years ago, Josh performed a variety of roles and excelled in every one of them. Between his work on defense, in scouting, player evaluation and coordinating the offense, Josh is a very well-rounded coach whose outstanding body of work speaks for itself. He is the product of a pure football environment which is evident in his approach to the game.

“On behalf of the entire Patriots organization, we thank Josh for tremendous success in New England and congratulate him and the McDaniels family for this most deserving opportunity for advancement.”

Here is a video update of McDaniels arrival from Broncos TV:

Looks like we got a pure football guy whose father & grandfather were football coaces. He attened Canton McKinley High School in Canton, Ohio, the “cradle of coaches”. If what Adam Schefter says is true, that Mike Nolan will coach the defense, Denver should be right back in the mix very soon. Drafting at #12 we should get a shot at Ray Maualaga or James Laurinitas or maybe even a big time DE like Orakpo. With another good draft we should be good to go. Only problem: the schedule next year will really be tough: NFC East, AFC Central + Indianapolis & New England. We might be a year or two away but I feel some really good things are about to happen for my Broncos !!!!

  2. METAL_BRONCO says:

I feel an exciting and refreshing change coming to Bronco land!

  3. monodono says:

I just read It”s official Coach Mike Nolan hired as New DC!

  4. mstarnes9999 says:

Where did you read the official announcement at?

  5. louisianabroncofan says:

Wow. McDaniels is one thing but MIKE NOLAN????!!!! Holy rusted metal Batman!!! thats awesome!! I wasn’t sure we were gonna land a good defensive coordinator and it scared me a little but this is looking good quick. I actually dont love the hiring of McDaniels but i dont hate it either. I’m just gonna have to wait and see. but nolan on defense is a great hire. So i wonder whos gonna be the offensive coordinator? Line coaches? DB coach etc… cant wait to see the line up. I think with what Nolan can do with a defense and mcdaniels track record with offense we can be good soon. and i like the thought of soon.

  6. West Coast says:

I am so pumped. Chargers lost, taking my jeep out this weekend and our new coach starts today. Freakin AWESOME

  7. charger_hater says:

I love it! But i hope we get someone who can build a defense!

  8. firstfan says:

I just hope we can keep Dennison.

  9. charger_hater says:

i agree we should get haynesworth he is a beast!!!

  10. 15themarshall15 says:

Alright guys let me tell you this is a good thing so some of the doubters who will be here listen up. We are always talking about how exciting our offense is and will be for years, if this hire works out we have a 32 year old coach, he could be here and grow with this growing offense. i predict jay has 5000 yards passing next year and b marsh and casino royal are both gonna be 1000 yard recievers. and (haynesworth) would be an excellent pick up for anyone especially us. Josh McDaniels and Mike Nolan are both excellent drafters in their own respect. Nolan drafted patrick willis thats the type of player we need. Its all uphill for us now. Gotta love shanahan and what he did for this team but i guess its time and this is a very interesting head coach its looking GOOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  11. peterg says:

You have heard the last of the Denver Broncos for 10 years or better. Pat Bowlen just handed the keys of a Lamborghini over to a 15 year old kid with a learning permit. This is not where a man with NO, NO, NO Head Coaching experience from Pee Wee up should be cutting his teeth. Cutler will get better but this team will be out of control and 1-15 by year after next. He has shown no ability to lead a team. Being a great coach does not make you a great head coach. You are a leader or you are not and this man has NO leadership skills or he would have been a head coach somewhere else. Bowlen should be the one fired.

  12. MJGarcia says:

I can’t wait for next season – GO BRONCOS!!!!

  13. broncosfanodd6 says:

peterg your sayin McDaniels is to young to coach, but then you said if he was that good he’d be coachin somewhere else, so you either think he should of been coachin at age 31 or there was a better place to go than denver? witch on is it, would you leave a team that was goin to the superbowl every other year? don’t worry i’ll wait! . . . . . . the answer is UHH NO why would you, Denver was the best coachin spot to land this year who wouldn’t want to come here, like i said im not 100% sold on him as our coach, but im not gonna throw him under the bus, how can i he made a great pick up by bringin in Mike Nolan, lets see what he has before we jump the gun, and if we can bring in Phillys DB coach that’s another great move,

  14. broncosfan8210 says:

Hey is it just me or is some one still hating bowlen for firing a legend. I think that mike should have retired with john.Anyways i heard that ray lewis is gonna be a freeagent.I’ve been saying that we need a rb in the first round but then i thought….There are gonna be a mess load of halfbacks on the fa….Like maybe a larry johnson or E.James….. but also some good lbs. But with mcdaniels and nolan i think we will kick some serious tails next year. a good draft and a awsome fa pick ups… Dam I cant wait

  15. shawn723 says:

i like these moves i think we needed a yound exciting head coach to pump this team up. I would have rather seen us pick up a defensive minded coach becasue thats what we need work on the most but with nolan coming in that alright i guess. does anyone here think we should switch to a 3-4? i think by using a 3-4 we can utilize the speed of our backers to shoot the gaps and put pressure on the qb

  16. broncosfan8210 says:

When i thought of a dc this year i thought of nolan the day he got fired

  17. charger_hater says:

i think we should go after sproles he is never hurt and then we wouldnt have to play him twice a year!!!

  18. peterg says:

    Hey broncosfanodd6:
I didn’t say he was too young. I said he has NO head coaching experience. This team is close to being able to compete for a title and Bowlen turned it over to a guy who has NO LEADERSHIP SKILLS. Age is not the issue. Experience and leadership skills are.
Yes, this is a dream job from McDaniels perspective and he’d be a fool not to take it, but it’s a nightmare for those of us who live, eat, sleep, and bleed Bronco Blue as I have since 1976. He IS NOT READY for this level of coaching assignment. In two years free agents will be lining up to leave Denver to get out before the collapse. Then when the cubbard is bare he will be fired leaving us with no players and no coach. We’ll end up as the next DETROIT LIONS. Mark my words.

  19. broncosfanodd6 says:

yes i like the 3-4 we can get back to blitzin more the only thing with a 3-4 your front 3 have to be able to stop the run and get to the QB if not then it’s a waste, i wanted denver to pick up james when he left the colts but now he’s gettin to old, and look at the past when we bring in older backs, but now if we can get our hands on larry johnson with out spendin big money our OFFENSE is set, but johnson is gettin up there in age as well he’s what 28? and most RB’s start lossin there step at 31, and you have to take in count that KC has no offense and johnson had to do everythin by himself your back should be gettin 40-45 snaps a game that’s just to much, but i wouldn’t mind taken a AFC WEST player, everyone else taken them from us, givin i know we do but johnson has beat us for years,

    http://www.nationalfootballpost.com/2009/01/sources-nolan-heading-to-denver/

It looks like Nolan is going MileHigh too. I think it’s starting to fall into places. Wonder if Bowlen is even going to hire a GM???

  21. broncosfanodd6 says:

maybe Bowlen picked McDaniels because he’s cheap and waitin for Bill Cowher to coach againg!

  22. peterg says:

Those of you who think Mike Nolan is all that should take a look at this link:
    http://www.ninersnation.com/2009/1/7/711534/mike-nolan-for-packers-def

  23. Captain Kirk says:

    Peterg:

You need to look at some facts and background on McDaniels:
    see
    http://nationalfootballpost.stats.com/fb/story.asp?i=20090112223751100000101&ref=hea&tm=&src=

“McDaniels guided an offense that had led New England to 18 straight victories before a stunning loss to the New York Giants in last season’s Super Bowl. That team scored an NFL-record 75 touchdowns and 589 points. ”
“McDaniels helped the defensive staff in New England for three seasons before serving as quarterbacks coach in 2004. Bill Belichick promoted him to offensive coordinator in 2006, and his career took off. “

  24. broncosfanodd6 says:

if Rick Dennison leaves for the 49er’s do you think Turner or Bates will get the OC job

  25. broncosfan8210 says:

And no i’m not calling you stupid. But some of the things you put on here are like you are starting to give up on the team

  26. 07elway says:

Well, I for one still hate Bowlen’s decision so in order for this guy to be in my good graces he’s going to have to prove himself that he’s not only good, BUT GREAT. To take over Shanny’s job and “replace” him, if you will, he’s got ALOT of work to do… and that’s an understatement.

I still think its a rather goofy move to fire, FIRE THE OFFENSIVE GENIUS and try to replace him with somebody that thinks along almost the exact same lines. We need someone with our D at the front of their minds but instead we just replaced one offensive minded coach with another. Baffling… this one is right over my head! whoosh!!

    With faith…
    GO BRONCOS in ’09!!!!

  27. 15themarshall15 says:

peterg you are a fool, this guy has been in the nfl since he was 18, he grew up in canton ohio. we will win at least 11 games next year.

    broncosfanodd6
dom capers will be our db coach, from ne. and jim johnson is what make eagles so good on defense, that and assante samuels who to me is the next champ we should of got him in free agency.

shawn723 yes i think were switching to a 3 4, we will draft to build a 3 4 defense. i say pick up vilma and use woodyard and williams and hopefully the one we draft will be good enough to start. I even know Boss Bailey can be efective in a 3 4 defense with his speed he could be the fourth rusher and im sure excell at it. Josh McDaniels will bring in the best of the best, were gonna do what New england did the past 5 years, i can feel it.

charger_hater Sproles would be a good pick up but as unlikely as it is im almost certain that Ladanian will be the one going and it will be via trade for at least a first rounders most likely to the nfc. Sproles will start against us next year for the san diego chargers.

broncosfanodd6 mangini and romeo crennel are great coordinators i just dont think they are head coach material some people arent. if you arent sold on McDaniels now is the time to get sold on him. He has football in his blood. His offensive style is very similiar to that of our offense this year if you dont recall the comparisons earlier this season. He was a defensive scouter, this is a very good thing, its what we need.

  28. broncosfanodd6 says:

Nolan knows how to find a MLB Ray Lewis Patrick Willis, so yea i think Nolan will do a good job for the DEFENSE

  29. peterg says:

    Captain Kirk:
Offensive Coordinator is not head coach. Being a great Coach doesn’t make you a great Head Coach. Head Coach is less about coaching and more about delegationa and leadership. He has NEVER been a Head Coach even for a Pee Wee football team. He doesn’t have what it takes to lead the whole show and that is why he has always been a follower. AKA. Coordinator.

  30. charger_hater says:

    stop bringing down the party!!!haha

  31. Captain Kirk says:

Granted Peterg, he is young, you have to start somewhere right? Up until this time, he has been extremely impressive in his roles. Good pick in my mind and with the backup on DC for Mike Nolan, Broncos are on the right track.

  32. Captain Kirk says:

Wish we could hear the questions being presented at this press conference.

  33. louisianabroncofan says:

No matter what the accomplishments of that patriots offense last year are impressive. the way he’s come up through the ranks (the right way IMO) in an organization like the patriots is DAMN impressive. Bill Bellichick is no dummy and he saw alot in this guy. Those things say alot. based on how quickly he has developed in their organization i say this guy has alot of natural ability and intangibles you cant teach. His experience will come. i dont see bashing this guy on experience when he hasnt had the chance to have any. it starts now. like anyone else in football. they all start somewhere and when a guy with this much raw ability is right there for you, get him. and thats what we did and i’m glad. No guarantees in the NFL though. Hope he’s great for us. we needed someone new tho. Shanahan needed to go without a doubt. wonder how long til we stop seeing the “i wish we had Shanahan back” blogs. guess it depends on how well McDaniels does, huh? We are going to do well. i can feel it.

  34. Captain Kirk says:

Is it something I said? I noticed some of my posts are taken down and the recent one is awaiting moderation. Did I fat finger some keys and type a cuss word? I try like crazy not to do that. PeterG responded to a post to him and mine was taken down. Was it offensive? Point me to the way!! Have I been a bad boy? I guess I should be more like PeterG and post before thinking. So just in case this gets through, PeterG, I am trying to follow your thing about Canton and stuff, but you need to realize, this dudes been in Football all his life. He has more coaching experience than Shanahan ever had before he was named an NFL head coach. It would have been crazy to pass him up. It was a good choice for Bowlen and one that will last like Shanahan.
    (Is that OK Mods?)

  35. BucknBronco says:

    peterg,
What do you think Shannahan did all of those years before he became a head coach? Or do you think he was worthless once he was head coach too? To get a 32 year old that has that much NFL experience is nothing short of AWESOME. Belichick said that McDaniels has excelled in every job they gave him. Come on, what more optimism do you want?

Just wait until the ’09 season gets going, we’ll be a better Team this year I gaurantee it.

    Go Broncos ’09

  36. 07elway says:

chuntbuck – you would stop cheering for this team over a hoodie!?!?!? You have got to be kidding me. That’s the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard and the saddest thing I’ve ever heard. And you call yourself a fan… holy cow!!

    With faith…
    GO BRONCOS in ’09!!!!

  37. BucknBronco says:

It doesn’t matter how Mangini and Crennel did with their head coaching positions, look at the teams they went to. They’re NOT the Denver Broncos.

    Go Broncos ’09

  38. Dtmac3 says:

Hey broncosfan8210… Why would you say that Shannahan should retire with John Elway? It was his 4th year as a head coach.

Anyway… This is a good move and McDaniels was definitely number 1 as far as offensive minded coaches go, however I also wouldn’t have minded seeing someone like Steve Spagnuolo come in and redo the defense. I think a good move overall and now all we have to do is sign one or two big names in the offseason such as Haynesworth or Asmougha and have a solid defensive draft so that we can give our offense the ball. Go Broncos.

  39. S.D.Bronco30 says:

    peterg
You have no idea what you are talking about, by your reasoning Shanny would have never been a head coach because no one would have given him a chance because “he has no head coaching experience and no leadership skills”. He did not enter the league as a head coach he was just a coordinator to begin with, then he was given a chance to be a head coach and it seems as though that worked out pretty well. He had to be given a chance to prove himself, and that he did. This is true for all of the great coaches in NFL history they all had to start somewhere. And saying he has no leadership skills, what information do you base this on? just because he has not been a head coach? you don’t think all the coaches have to be leaders, they are coaches that is part of the job. Your just pissed and don’t like McDaniels for whatever reason so you are making irrational statements, and the stupid examples you are using make no sense either. Chill out and wait to see what happens. I am not jumping on the wagon here and saying he is the best thing since sliced bread, he will have to prove himself, but I am excited to see what happens and I think this will be a good thing. I think he will be able to do some great things with this offense and hopefully he has the crew to build a D. I wish him the best of luck and am looking forward to the season. So now that you are mad at my blog I will wait patiently for more of your rants, cry’s and your attempt to bash me with more irrational thoughts.

  40. nor_cal_bronco says:

Regardless what people say I luv it that Pat Bowlen made Josh McDaniels I mean coach Mcdaniels our coach! Oh but he has no experience as a coach? that’s bull 8 yrs in the league the kid has it sewed up. I know its early but if the front office can make some power moves during this best free agent pool of all time and our draft is solid OH MY GOODNESS the sky’s the limit! JUST IMAGINE SIGNING HAYNESWORTH(ALL WE NEED IS A STRONG PASS RUSH TO GET TO THE QB FAST) SPENDING MOST IF NOT ALL THE DRAFT PICKS ON DEFENSE SOMETHING THE BRONCOS ALL WAYS FAILS ON AND SIGNING SPROLES OR BRANDON JACOBS( TRUCK STICK ) PENDING IF HE DNT GET FRANCHISED. OH YEA WOODYARD IS A SAV JUST WANTED TO SAY THAT.

  41. tdforeal says:

Everyone cussing on McDaniels – You’re not actual fans, you’re just haters. Ya I hate that Shanny got fired, I think it was a bad move. Don’t sit there and cuss out a guy who has not even had an oppourtunity to screw it up! If he does, talk all you want. Until then just sit back and relax; you’re not a millionaire that owns a football team so you have to live with the decisions that they make just like everyone else.

Everyone has to start somewhere, I am proud of Bowlen for willing to go to bat for a guy like McDaniels and allow him to develop as a head coach.

Stop hating until the season at least starts. Be a fan.

  42. BucknBronco says:

UH-OH chuntbuck, looks like your Denver days are over…

“Further evidence the student has ascended to teacher, McDaniels will don a Broncos hooded sweatshirt on the sidelines, homage to his former mentor, now his peer.

“As a matter of fact, I can’t wait to see my hoodie,” he said.

  43. No. 83 says:

Okay, let’s all try to keep in mind one thing…. McDaniels is a FOOTBALL COACH. Yes, he’s spent most of his time on the offensive side of the ball, and that’s also where he’s had his most recent success. Tremendous success at that. But don’t forget that he actually got his start on the DEFENSIVE side of the ball.

Just because he has an offensive background, doesn’t mean that he doesn’t know jack squat about defense, or anything else for that matter besides, Tom Brady and “throw the ball to 81″ if you want to be successful.

Let’s think this through, John Harbaugh in Baltimore, he used to be a special teams coordinator. Is the special teams the ONLY good thing on that team? No.

Tony Sparano in Miami was an offensive assistant in Dallas. Is Miami’s offense the only good thing, and the DEFENSE fell apart? No.

Mike Smith in Atlanta. He used to be the DC for the Jaguars. If I recall, I think the Falcons had a pretty good OFFENSE this year as well. Hmm, imagine that.

So again, just because the Broncos defense needs help, doesn’t mean that all hope is lost when another “offensive minded guy” joins the club.

It’s all about the coaching and the players. The year that the Ravens won the Super Bowl with that “great defense”, Brian Billick was their coach. Guess what Billick’s background is? OFFENSE! Yeah, believe it or not, he was the OC for the Vikings when they had Randy Moss and Culpepper, and they went 15-1 before losing to the Falcons in the NFC Championship… and then the Dirty Birds lost to the infamous orange and blue in Super Bowl 33. Yeah, look it up.

So we didn’t hire Spagnuolo or Frazier. Don’t forget that great coordinators don’t always make the best Head Coach. Yeah, the great Dick LeBeau (the Steelers DC), was the HC for the Bengals from 2000-2002… and he didn’t do so well. Yeah, I know, IT WAS THE BENGALS, but still.

So, keep in mind before you burn McDaniels at the stake, Spagnuolo or Frazier may not have panned out so well, even though they’re “defensive minded” guys, and that’s where the Broncos hurt right now.

And another thing, Head Coaches have to much on their plate to get specific and focus on the little things. That’s what coordinators are for. So let’s hope the Mike Nolan thing turns out to be true, and he can turn the Broncos defense into the Ravens defense… because that’s where he was before he went to the 49ers. He was the DC for the great Raven defense.

So relax and give McDaniels a chance. Yeah, he’s young. Yeah, he doesn’t have any Head Coaching or great War General “leadership” in Vietnam.

    But hey…..

YOU GOT TO START SOME WHERE!

Good ole’ Shanny didn’t have any “Head Coaching” experience until Al Davis gave him a shot in Oakland. So remember, no matter how young or how old, McDaniels has 3 rings, in the recent past none the less, Shanny has 3 rings too…… from last century. So it appears as if McDaniels has what you might call a, “hot hand.”

    I rest my case.

    Finally! …..I know.

  44. No. 83 says:

Look at it this way… Rod Marinelli is a “defensive minded” guy too. Look how well that turned out for the Lions. But you know what? When Marinelli was the D-Line coach in Tampa Bay, that was one of the best D-Lines in all of the NFL. For a very long time too.

Spanuolo and Frazier are “defensive minded” guys, yes. But when you’re the Head Coach, you got the draft, scouting, free agency, salary cap, stupid players shooting themselves in the leg, “making it rain” at strip clubs with $100 bills, injuries, good staff members getting other gigs, preseason, regular season, playoffs, PLAYOFFS?!, turnovers, a wife, kids, a mortgage, owners breathing down your neck, fans breathing down your neck, DUIs, domestic violence, college funds, car insurance, utility bills, pipe leaks, oil leaks, fridge leaks, 12 year-old daughter has 19 year-old boyfriend, wife is having an affair quite possibly, teenage son just knocked up his teenage girlfriend, dog has rabies, grandma has diarrhea, Christmas tree is on fire in the living room, other son’s friend just accidentally threw a Nintendo-Wii controller through the TV, ex-wife just got re-married to your best friend… who also happens to be your offensive coordinator, no milk in the refrigerator, etc., etc., etc., oh and……. FIXING THE BRONCOS DEFENSE!

Would you rather hire the “defensive strength” at head coach when he all of the above mentioned AND MORE to worry about? Or hire a FOOTBALL COACH, and help him bring in TALENTED COORDINATORS to fix your defense?

    Again, I rest my case.

  45. raidrhadr says:

    True dat No. 83

  46. Broncos4ever80 says:

Oooooo snap, Yeah buddy! Its looking good! Mike Nolan nice! I am more worried about the defense! our offense is fine, could use more work but in order for us to BEAT CHARGERS for the Division we NEED A DEFENSE! but yeah after Shanahan being fired i was down but this New Head Coach and i guess new Defensive Coordinator is giving me hope!

    By the Way Chargers lost!

  47. S.D.Bronco30 says:

    No. 83
Great blogs, great points and info in the first one. The second one was hilarious. Keep it up!!

tdforeal- good job, that goes for all you people who are supporting McDaniels, thanks for being real fans and getting on these people who are already crying and nothing has happened yet. I hated to see Shanahan go to, but whats done is done and now as REAL fans we need to give support. I know everyone is entitled to their opinion but you cry babies are reminding me of when I lived in Minneapolis and had to listen to all the love them one second hate them the next Viking fans.

Bronco nation is better then that and more classy then that, lets show coach McDaniels what kind of organization he has been given the privilege and honor of being a part of. Let it motivate him to work his hardest to carry on the great bronco traditions we are all proud of and fuel his fire to WIN!!!!!
