When free agency began, Joe Mays admits he had doubts he would end up back in Denver.
“I wasn’t sure what was going to happen, just not knowing what to expect, not knowing what direction the team wanted to go in,” he said Thursday.
So the linebacker began visiting other teams. Fresh off a trip to New Orleans, he hopped on a plane headed to Washington before connecting to Indianapolis.
Mays, who typically turns off his phone as soon as he gets on a plane — “I usually do that and follow directions,” he smiled — kept it on this time.
And it rang.
“My agent…called me and just asked me how I was doing, just regular conversation,” Mays recalled. “I’m like, ‘Well, I’m on a flight — the flight that you booked for me.’”
“I was like, ‘What’s up?’ He just said, ‘Well, get off the flight, we just agreed to a deal.’”
The Broncos had agreed to terms to re-sign the veteran linebacker, who played all 16 games (12 starts) for the team in 2011 and ranked third on the club with 74 tackles.
So Mays spent the next few minutes figuring out what to do next before grabbing his bags and getting off the plane prior to its departure.
“At the end of the day it all worked out, because I was able to get off and we had a guy on standby that was able to get on,” Mays laughed. “I was excited. I knew he was excited to get to his destination, as well, but I was excited to hear that I’m coming back here. I couldn’t have asked for a better place to be.”
The standby passenger couldn’t have asked for a better place to be either, as he took over Mays’ first-class seat.
But all joking aside, Mays said he was thrilled to be able to rejoin the Broncos.
“They made me the offer, and I wanted to be here, my family wanted to be here — It was easy for me to say yes,” he said. “Just the fact that they offered me, they believe in me, they want me to come in and do better than I did last year, and you know what, I’m just going to make sure I keep my end of the bargain and do whatever it takes.”

So, has anyone heard anymore about the Asante Samuel trade?
Broncos offered 2 scenarios to Philly for CB Samuel. One inclued a 5th or 6th round pick and the other involved an undisclosed player(my guess is DJ)
That’s what I was thinking, but I didn’t want to say it until I’d heard someone else was thinking like me. Soundalike it can’t happen, but I would like that trade… I would like DJ to go.
The 6 games he has to miss because of his stupidity probably put a hinge in it. But I have always liked Asante.
I dont want DJ to go though. The only problem I have with him is the trash he was talking to Eddie Royal after signing with SD. Saying Royal was soft.
If the Eagles can`t trade Asante, they will flat out cut him. They have to, they can`t shell out that king of dough to a 3rd CB. The Eagles have Nnamde and Rogers Cromarte, so Asante is as good as gone from Philly. The Eagles have little bargaining power unless the 2 other teams who want him make a better offer. Its good ole style poker now, with 4 teams in the mix, Philly and the other three who want him most. Or will he just be flat out put on waivers.
I can see how that annoys you but they were joking back and forth with Royal and Miller.
My guess is Asante Samual will be traded on draft day to one of those 3 teams who want him.
Well, i guess it’s a wait and see! I have always liked DJ until he said that about Eddie and took performance enhancer drugs! I would love to see them make that trade happen.
I just read that the two other teams who are interested in Asante are the Titans and the Lions.
When Champ is hurt we obviously hurt at CB and if we had three amazing players they could help in other areas and maybe Gronk and others would beat us every play.
I obviously meant wouldn’t. Sorry! I don’t know where we are with $ though.
We wouldn’t make the trade unless Asante agreed to restructure anyway. IMO
That’s what the Denver Post said.
Needless to say, this offseason has been fun and I cannot wait for August!!! Wow.
he wouldnt have to agree to a restructure he would have to agree to a new deal. Restructure means he still gets all the money the Eagles gave him which im sure we dont cause hes getting Bailey kinda money.
Storytime:not sports related, just off the wall!
Last Saturday night me and my brother in law had to go on a beer run,I live 3 miles from the store,he only drank like 2 beers,I however had like 12-14,so I let him drive my 25th anniversary addition RS Camaro. We didn’t make it to the package store in time, the lady that runs and owns the store passed us in the parking lot,so we had to get his girlfriend to bring us some from town, but anyway on the way home,he asked if he could dog it,I said SURE,he pulls up at the end of a cops drivway and revs it up and drops the clutch(it’s a 5 speed) needless to say it twists sideways and lights the back tires up in 1st and 2nd,then I give him a mean look, and he lets up,I’m like “man not in the front of a cop’s house dude,I don’t want him after me everytime I get out in this car”,you would have thunk he was the one who had 12-14 beers instead of me,lol. Now the cop has black marks on the highway at the end of his driveway, glad he was off duty!
Next time we’ll take the suv, lol.
Maybe I’ll grow up one of these days……….nah…..41 and having too much fun.LMAO!!!!!!!!!
GO BRONCOS!!!!!!!!!!
BFE
haha! Nice BFE…. that’s fun stuff!
BFE Thats pretty great LOL
You guys think the ‘undisclosed’ player could have been Know-Sho… the Eagles already traded for Ryans, i know he’s MLB, so it really could have been DJ also… it would be quite an offseason for them if they landed DJ and Ryans… that defense would be mean…
and short of DJ and Know-Sho do we have any players that have trade value that are available… Doom Champ and Miller are the only guys I can think of that other teams might want but those guys aren’t going anywhere… Maybe Clady or a healthy Kuper…? spluh… just thinking out loud
BT The Eagles IMO have two young good OLBs not the best but they did well last year. I think Knowshow may be more likely. They may have even shopped DT (Doubt it but a possibility) Most of McD era players are gone so it wouldnt surprise me.
are some of you really saying you dont like DJ because of what he said to eddie on twitter?? they were joking people. they were doing the same thing last year its really not a big deal idk how you take that stuff seriously
Pop Quiz… What college did Lawrence Taylor attend…? (No Googling!!!)
Hint… Same as Julius Peppers!
BT UNC!!!!
Saying Julius Peppers gave it away lol
History says Coples could be a STUD!!!
Was it the school of seek and destroy?
Coples and Brown lol Both two good pass rushers from UNC
LT (The REAL LT) was one of my favorite LB’s ever!!!
Nice work AB…
BT lol Ima huge UNC fan I didnt know LT went there but Peppers gave it away. A lot of talk about UNC pass rushers Coples and Brown mixed with Peppers.
Hi guys go broncos cmon pens
been busy busy busy miss yall crazy fkrs
be back when i be back !!!!!!
I have always been biased for DJ … even tho his recent DUI and current possible 6 week suspension has irked me. He is our Best LB … still is … even with the emergence of Von becaue he doesn’t just specialize in one thing (von will overtake him soon enough). He is still our most complete LB and while he is aging … id rather have him than an over the hill CB like Asante. CBs fall off way faster than LBs cuz thier speed is needed more. Never the less ill back whatever play this team makes. I don’t make the decisions and whatever happens happens. Also it would be interesting if it were DJ assuming Eagles dont mind the possible 6 game suspension. Well if it is DJ … expect a LB in the first 2 rounds. Fox is a front 7 guy … he loves drafting front 7 and RBs above all else. If we have to lose DJ … please not for Asante … we are not suffering that bad at CB .. Champ, Porter, Chris Harris who is damn good, We may possibly draft one, Syd-Quan, Vaughn … we don’t need an ALL pro secondary. We tried with Ty Law and that was an epic fail. Just my thoughts. Can’t wait for draft
Later days, TRB
Hey youngins! Some one clue me the freakinAsante samuel offer?

On the subject of religious discussion on the blog – directed respectfully at BFE.
What?????????????? Your rant was anything but respectful!!!!!
You have a right to your religion and to post here! And to free speech and all that! “But what we have here is a failure to communicate” LOL!!! This is a Broncos Football Blog!!! Not a pulpit for you to preach to anyone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You daddy are in the wrong media!! Your post at BFE pissed me off!! And then your pathetic effort to try to explain it to all was a poor attempt IMO to SAVE US ALL!! (But then again you did use some big words and maybe I did not Get It?? I am just a Broncos Fan from North Denver!!)

FTR
Hey FTR – I love killing your buzz – LOL
Just letting you know I’m around.
I’ll use small words and less of them –
The point is that many folks give religious points of view – even when talking sports.
No one gets to exclude Christianity just because that particular religion doesn’t happen to be comfortable in culture right now.
That’s all –
God Bless
Btw – it should be pointed out that the entire previous blog about what Beedles is preaching is in fact a religious point of view.
People react to the word ‘religion.’ I don’t know why but I suppose it may be different reasons for each person. Maybe the term stirs up thoughts of collars, stain glass windows, do’s and don’ts – who knows. I suspect we all have a feeling of judgement and condemnation when the word is mentioned. I am using the term in a different context.
If you have a belief system and a set of practices associated with the belief system – It is a religious practice and that is all that I mean by the term.
So I ask about Asante Samuel and get the Religion update? LMAO what happened!
LAX Denver was interested in trading for Samuel. They offered a player or a 5th/6th round pick for him. However it (obviously) didnt go through and a trade is now unlikely however talks may open back up during the draft
You know what else seemed unlikely? Manning signing in Denver! Or Tracy Porter! Or other peoples! Or ridding the circus! Take it to the bank! 22 will be worn again in Denverby a dreaded CB not named sydquan haha!
LAX it was from a team source. Both teams have stopped negotiating a trade. If it happens it will be draft day. Lions and Titans are also going after Samuel.
Like siad before Samuel will have to agree to a new deal with Denver if they get him. I say give them a 6th and conditional pick next year.
He told the Eagles he would renegotiate to make a trade happen before
He also told the Eagles he will redo his deal to stay in Philly.
