March Madness at Dove Valley

March 18th, 2010 - 5:13pm by Gray Caldwell

The NCAA men’s basketball tournament began today, and it’s safe to say there’s plenty of attention on televisions throughout the facility.

In fact, when Brady Quinn walked up to the podium to begin his press conference, he noticed that his alma mater, Notre Dame, was in a tight game with less than two minutes remaining.

So he proceeded to step off the podium and watch the remainder of the game, bantering back and forth with some of the media. Unfortunately, Notre Dame lost by a point, and the quarterback headed back up to the podium for his press session.

But that wasn’t the last sign of March madness at Dove Valley. When Wesley Woodyard stepped up to begin his press conference, he announced that he had his alma mater, Kentucky, going all the way to win the championship this year.

He also managed to tease a reporter about the University of North Carolina, who, as he said, “barely won” its first game in the NIT.

As a proud Tar Heel, let me first say that they’ll be much better next year. Also, an NIT championship banner wouldn’t look too tacky next to those five NCAA championship banners in the Dean Dome.

Hope everyone’s bracket remains unbusted this weekend.

to me i think if mcd work on his playcalling we will win aleast 12 game

  2. brian_schneider says:

I do agree with the McD working on his playcalling. He needs to not be so predictible, the defensive coordinators were reading him like a book last season. We also need to work on execution, allowing penetration, dropping passes, failing on short yardage, failing on 3rd down conversions. I think we improve in those two areas and we have a better chance at winning some more games. Also our defense is going be much better. IMO.

  3. BeastFromEast92 says:

I hope we cut Berger and give Colquitt a chance at punter,ST hurt us a lot last season also.

  4. brian_schneider says:

Berger has to go. His release is so long that I hold my breath every punt because it seems like it could be blocked. Also if you only want someone to punt the ball 20 yards 9 out of 10 times, I’ll do it for a lot less money.

  5. BeastFromEast92 says:

Jason Lafornica reports the Broncos are interested in C Kevin Mawae,he probably has a couple of years left.Even though he went to the pro bowl last year and was injury free,c’mon man he’s 39,what are we running here a retirement home.We need some young talent in here,we are going from one of the youngest teams to one of the oldest teams in the NFL fast.Pouncey or Walton will be available late 1st into 2nd rounds.

  6. BeastFromEast92 says:

    @brian LMAO

  7. marshisboss says:

Well Pouncey or Walton will have someone to learn from if they give him a one year contract i would not mind

  8. TheRoyalBeast says:

I personally don’t think Larsen can be the ILB we want, but he deserves his shot and if he earns it, kudos to him.

I still say we go defense first with McClain or Dan Williams or w/e but Oline sounds nice too. But i repeat, if McD doesnt fix his playbook and they don’t improve on the blocking scheme, we will still have problems…

Kevin Mawae,…….Apparently we are running a retirement home BFE, so it would seem…..unbelievable….guess thats what u do when u want more bang for ur buck….

  9. rayjr26 says:

i agree too much age is not always a good thing (sorry bay lmao). to me thats more of temoporary fix. so get some young guys in there to learn from the old guys quick before its too late! im not sold on the idea of larsen as or ILB but if he beats out the competition then so be it!
“THE BATTLE IS WON IN THE TRENCHES”

  10. strandoftds says:

My guess is Bronco`s go O-line on first pick and may trade back in first round. I`m thinking Pouncey.

  11. killerkod says:

Still no rumblings about Marshall eh? I keep logging on everyday to hear some news but there’s never anything. I sure wish Mr. B would just ease our minds and pay the man! We need him on our side this year and for years to come!

  12. TheRoyalBeast says:

The funny thing is whenever i google marshall, the only thing i get are piss poor trades for Marshall. Trades are made to better your organization or get equal value. I hope McD isnt that stupid.

And for Bay who says Marshall is as good as gone and that they will send him off for whatever…I remember in the Bowlen article, Bowlen said, (and im paraphrasing here) He would like Marshall here, but if McDaniels brings a trade that is truly beneficial to the club, he doesn’t think he will block it. TRULY BENEFICIAL. Tossing him a way for chump change doesn’t sound beneficial, and THAT, is why I believe he will stay because all the suggested offers for Marshall that i am hearing sound illogical IMO…

  13. brian_schneider says:

I think that one of 3 things could happen:
    1) Seattle finally surrenders their #6 pick for Marshall.
    2) We sign him and then trade him before the draft for picks and/or players.
    3) He remains a Bronco for another season and then finally gets a good contract.

McD and Bowlen both know the value in Marshall and won’t let him go for chump change.

  14. BeastFromEast92 says:

Don’t get me wrong Mawae was one of the best Centers the game has ever seen,IMO,but why would the Titans tell him if he returns he will play backup if he still has it????if we were making a Superbowl run and we needed a Center to get us over the hump,to win the big one I’d say ok,but we ain’t,so we need YOUNG talent to grow here and thrive, anyone checked our roster lately we have 20 players that are over 30,and most of them are starters,I’m not saying older players can’t contribute, but you can’t build a team out of over the hill guys, and get rid of all our young talent(Cutler,Hillis,Kern,Jack Williams,Marshall,Sheffler) and expect to build a team for the future,McD is just trying to save his a**,that’s why he is trying to build a team to win now,if we make the playoffs next season he thinks it will make himself look good, not worrying about the reprocussions of running outta talent in a couple of years….Sorry so long….JMHO.

  15. BeastFromEast92 says:

1.McClain or Williams….youth…plus both have great potential!
2.Pouncey or Walton….Hell we ain’t got no Center!
3.Gerhart or Dixon….pounding up the middle!
    4.OL or DL…youth!
    5.CB….depth!
    6.KR….gamebreakers!

I think that’s what we need. Not necessarily in that order after #3.

  16. BeastFromEast92 says:

Mr.B IS NOT AS NIEVE AS SOME PEOPLE ON HERE THINK HE IS,MARSHALL WILL NOT BE GIVEN AWAY.

  17. florio's_mom says:

Mawae is a good pathway to a younger center. sign this guy for a year and draft a center in the first couple rounds. HE will mentor him all while helping us win games. Just like Williams and Dawkins.

  18. BeastFromEast92 says:

Are we gonna draft a NT and DE’s to learn from the old guys on the Dline???NOT…what’s the difference???So who’s gonna get cut when we draft???

  19. florio's_mom says:

Not in the first round. The Dline is the most improved position this
offseason. The oline still needs work. We need to draft a center or guard in the first round. NT and DE can wait until the secind or third.

  20. Orange_Crusher says:

I think the point some are missing is that marshall doesn’t want to be here and HE will not accept a fair contract to stay. It is Marsh that is pushing the Broncos to trade for less value than we think he is worth.

I’m sure the Broncos would be happy if Marshall would stay and either sign the one year tender or sign the fair contract they offered him last offseason.

It’s Marshall who is trying to get out of Denver, not the Coach trying to get rid of him. imho

  21. killerkod says:

After last year’s fiasco, it’s tough to know what the truth really is.

  22. BeastFromEast92 says:

Where are all these players going to fit in???we only have 53 roster spots,if we keep bringing in FA’s,somebody has to eventually get cut to make room for draft players.I personally see no need of signing a FA Center and drafting one too, plus there’s a salary cap to think of as well.I say we need Pouncey or Walton,no need for a mentor.IMO

  23. TheRoyalBeast says:

in the words of derrick, AMEN TO THAT KillerKod.

I really dont know what the truth is so for all i know, what OC says is true. But no one has signed their tenders yet, because they are still trying to work out a deal. And knowing cheap McD and the question that surrounded whether marshall can play with the hip and produce the same way. The contract was probably crap. He has yet produced the same way. So bowlen give him that pay increase u talked about…IMO

  24. florio's_mom says:

Then why would we draft Dan Williams?????? Trust me there are plenty of players on this roster that don’t need to be here.

  25. DrunkenBronc says:

Maybe mcd feels his time is limited and would rather have old players than wait around for young ones to develop. IMO if he does any worse next season he is gone. So he’d rather have AARP members than ones he has to wait to develop.

  26. BeastFromEast92 says:

Can anyone show me where it says Marshall was offered a contract worthy of his talent, and him turning it down, gimme some #s on how much $$$$.Until I see it on paper or hear the BEAST say he dosen’t want to be here,I’m still holding onto the fact that he might stay.

  27. BeastFromEast92 says:

DB amen to that I been preaching that all damn day.

  28. sndvl says:

Mr. Bowlen has been quoted saying he has not talked to Brandon Marshall…that is NOT a good sign.
BFE, there is no salary cap this year! Remember?
OC- Marshall was quoted saying he wants to be a Denver Bronco. That was at the probowl. If you know another source that proves to the contrary, please share
Larsen getting first shot at ILB is music to my ears. I know a lot of you are skeptical, I dont know why…please explain! First smart move by McD in 2010. IF ITS TRUE
Mawae??????Seriously? What was the point of cutting Weigmann? 1 step forward, 2 steps back
NFL is supposed to release its primetime schedule later today. We may finally have a home opener since 04. There is talk that we may host the Al Davis’s on Monday night….Since that is the team that basically killed our playoff chances, I cant think of any better opponent to begin the 2010 campaign.
Just leave the laser lights at home……..
    GO BRONCOS 2K10!!!!!!!!!!

  29. BeastFromEast92 says:

So Mawae is more worthy of a roster spot at 39 than Dan Williams is at 22??? C’mon.

  30. florio's_mom says:

How have you been preaching that all day when you disagreed with Mawae coming here?

  31. florio's_mom says:

Not when we have Green, Bannan and Williams while we have 0 centers.

  32. BeastFromEast92 says:

All I’m trying to say is we need youth for the team to survive down the road, like I said earlier McD is trying to save his a** that’s why we are seeing the older FA’s coming in.He knows if he don’t win now he’s gone.We are getting rid of really good young talent and bringing in good talent with 2 or 3 years left.We need to build for the future not to save McD’s face.

  33. florio's_mom says:

Thats why I said bring in young Guard of Center to learn from Mawae. Because we are completely out of Centers, we could get an old and a new to help us now and later.

  34. BeastFromEast92 says:

Bannon is a backup, and Williams is coming off injuries.Don’t count your chickens before they hatch,we haven’t seen how good our D is gonna be yet.I agree with bringing in FA’s to help the team, but for goodness sake we need youth too.I was reading an article the other day that stated the Broncos have to get D line players thru FA because they don’t know how to draft them and it made me mad,but it’s true Trevor Pryce is the only DL we have drafted in years that panned out and he is finishing his career in Baltimore.

  35. sndvl says:

I get that point Florio! Agree completely. What has me dumbfounded is Mawae and Weigmann are basically the exact same type of player. Other than Mawae is older and lighter…not necessarily the kind of guy you want running the power blocking scheme!
We could have kept Weigy and still drafted the future…

  36. BeastFromEast92 says:

Yeah you don’t cut a starting player like Weigmann, and not have a backup, then try to bring in a 39 year old to take his place.

  37. sndvl says:

Not entirely true BFE. We drafted- Reggie Hayward, Montae Reagor, Bertrand Berry, Nick Eason, Elvis Dumervil…I think Shannahan ovelooked the value of D-linemen

  38. florio's_mom says:

I actually think Jamal’s injury was a great thing. His arm is healed and his knees took a year off.

Bannan is ready to make a move to starter. Sharing time has prolonged his career. We can get youth, but not Williams at 11 when we got 3 Dline in FA.

  39. BeastFromEast92 says:

If we are gonna run power scheme we need a 320 lb Center.

  40. BeastFromEast92 says:

florio Pouncey or Walton either one is worth a #11 pick, and that’s what we need the most,so we take BPA or trade down to get a Center.Agreed???

  41. sndvl says:

If any of the 3 FA D-lineman go down due to injury (which is a real possibility at their age), then we are right back at square one. Trade down the 11, get Pouncey then nab a D-lineman in the 2nd round. Assuming Marshall is still on our team. If not, ALL BETS ARE OFF!!!

  42. BeastFromEast92 says:

sndvl where are all those guys at DOOM is OLB now.He couldn’t make it at DE in a 3-4.

  43. BeastFromEast92 says:

Exactly why we need talented depth at Dline, not just regular Joes.

  44. florio's_mom says:

Don’t know about Walton. But Pouncy is mos def worth 11.

Draft a dlineman in he 2nd.

    and its all good.

  45. BeastFromEast92 says:

If Marshall leaves we will be in a world of hurt, unless we get a WR,we don’t have one that can even come close to taking his place week in and week out.

  46. brian_schneider says:

I agree with you BeastFromEast92. It is a balancing act of sorts, you want to have proven veterans on the team while developing your younger guys and eventually you’ll phase the older guys out. I’m still thinking we may still be looking at DT in the draft to develop under Williams. I don’t know though, maybe McD will try and develop some of our other NTs under Williams. I guess its hard to say until the draft is upon us. We defintely don’t want to have age upon age with no hope for the future.

  47. BeastFromEast92 says:

I’ve seen teams nab players not really projected to go as high as they get drafted due to need of position, but I think we could trade down and still get a C and another pick. But I think we get BPA in 1st round and if Pouncey is gone in 2nd we take Walton.

  48. TheRoyalBeast says:

If Marshall leaves, no matter who we get…for this year AT LEAST, ill consider it 5 steps backwards cuz we will be hurting.

And sndvl, yes, marshall said he wanted to be a career broncos at the pro bowl AND a week after at his interview on NFL Network. All i can go by is what I hear and not speculation…..

Don’t see the point in Mawae, but then again I didnt see the point in changing to Power blockng when we had some of the best zone blockers in the game. Changing schemes just resulting in us wasting draft picks. But then again we alwasy coulda used some Oline men so hey. I say no to Mawae, and still believe we should get McClain or Dan Williams first. Dan Williams is unlikely at this point. But I am down for w/e I think Walton will be avalable in the second round, and we can pick up another Oline man in the 3rd round, and in the fourth round pick up both CB Ansah and with our second 4th rounder a DE. or somethign to that effect. But anything works for me at this point. But I would really like CB Ansah or WR Jacoby ford in the mid rounds….

  49. TheRoyalBeast says:

Cali_Bronco put this up and I became an instant fan of his potential, not to mention he impressed at the combine and at Ohios pro day. He is a bit over 6ft and weighs 205 pounds. Runs a 4.3/4.4…now thats a full grown CB who is also a talented returner. Just watch the high light…mid round selection…

“Hey people I think I found our new p/k returner and future starting CB. I so want McD to draft this guy.

    Check out his highlights”

TRB great video,I agree we sure could use a gamebreaking playmaker like that on our team.
